New jackets purchased yesterday for super cold weather AND Chadwick worked out if you use coffee pods in the coffee machine instead of milk pods you get coffee 👏

We are ready for the day ahead!

So we are off this morning pre dawn to head to Yosemite to see some more of the natural beauty of USA... and hopefully chads first time seeing snow.

  • Day 19

    Yosemite National Park

    April 17, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

So today we donned our warm weather gear to head three hours inland East to Yosemite National Park. 🚌

5 am start to be ready to hit the road. No idea what to expect but looking at weather we thought we were in with a chance to see some snow!

It didn't disappoint but seeing was as close as we got! No touching :) ❄️❄️❄️

We stopped off at a safe way (American equivalent of woolworths) for some snacks for the bus ride! Safeway has everything known to mankind inside.

Toilets (how cool would that have been raising toddlers and having toilets actually inside the supermarket instead of abandoning your half filled trolley to make an emergency dash to the loo's before aisle threw becomes the loo)

Starbucks! Yep inside Safeway to !! ⭐️⭐️ caffeine hit!

There's a whole aisle for beer and wine .... though too early for me to shop this aisle today.

So we tried to stock up on different alternatives to what we would see and eat in Australia and then carried our goodies in a big brown paper bag (just like the movies) to the bus! Now we didn't know what food would be in the park so we shopped big! Much to everyone's entertainment on the bus....

The scenery to Yosemite was a mixture of beautiful .... very green and spacious farming land. Combined with the odd trailer park and industrial enterprises.

82% of the worlds almonds came from the area we drove through today.

Yosemite was a mixture of huge slate and granite rocks, trees, grass. Waterfalls and rivers. They have had a record year for rainfall.

We stopped at Tunnel View initially (instagram point) then on to Bridal falls where we could stand so close to the cascading waterfalls. Water spraying on your face ... and then the rain....

We drove past El Capitan which was a monster of a mountain.

The park is inhabited by bears, mountain lions, squirrels and an array of birds of prey. Sadly we didn't see any bears or lions !!!

We had two hours in the heart of the valley where glaciers had made their way through some thousands or millions of years ago... I can't remember exactly ... I think I nodded off in that bit! The lodge sat at the base of Yosemite falls, a massive waterfall.

Most people opted for lunch in the cafe and a leisurely stroll. Chad and I opted for the more vigorous and challenging high valley walk up the mountain to make the most of the views over the valley. 10 metres yes Metres into the steep incline ... my current lack of conditioning made me wonder if I perhaps should have joined the coffee club crew instead..... but it's a mind over matter thing. So up I went with Ironman himself.

Speaking of peak physical fitness our tour guide today is an ultra marathon runner..... completed 100km last weekend and looking to do a 100 miler in the next few weeks 😬😳

We trekked upwards for about 45 minutes (1 mile- 1.6km) to be rewarded with walking through a small waterfall and the spectacular views below. It was breath taking to be above the clouds and at eye level with the snow capped mountains around us!

Air legger chad gave me some tips on climbing down so as not to slide the 1 mile down on my behind in my soggy converse shoes. And was impressed my height challenged legs managed to keep with him. Not to mention we did not need to legitimately call 911 for heart failure.

A couple of beauty shots on our way out of the park before more snoozing on the bus on our way back!

Another completely different view point today and amazing sites to be seen. Plus the coach driver took us via a truck stop with beer for the drive home.

The Early Bird Does Not Get the Worm

    April 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The early bird does not get the worm

Up and out early to enjoy our last day in San Francisco!

We learnt two things this morning !

    1. Chads directional skills are worse then mine!! Yes mother my skills in navigation are actually better then Chadwick's!

    2. The early bird does not get the worm

So enjoying our see San Francisco by foot and bike methodology we decided to walk to the coit Tower which has 360 degree views over San Francisco's entirety. Some debate on the best method to get there.... funnily enough there was only one way and that was up!!

So just cos we love hills we trekked up another massive hill to the look out Tower to discover we were in fact 1.5hrs before opening time...... oops.......... so we enjoyed the views from the base of the Tower and decided that was as good as we would get unless we returned via taxi haha!!!

Going down the hill was much more scenic with quaint houses and gorgeous gardens! You wouldn't have too many dinner guests to these places due to the hike they would have to make it to your front door. None the less was a gorgeous start today !

So we grabbed a low cap hot chocolate ..... the waitress told me whipped cream makes everything better and we are now boarding the
    Ferry for Alcatraz

Alcatraz and last minute sight seeing

    April 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We toured to Alcatraz this morning and it didn't disappoint ! Really interesting tour. We explored the island from all view points !

The history is really interesting and the audio jail tour was really informative. Something I'm glad we did! The panoramic view back towards San Francisco from the island were amazing and we've had awesome weather today !!!

Went to Hard Rock Cafe for lunch and our shared entree could have been our main .... think we will roll out of San Francisco.... meal was delicious though, we even spoilt ourselves with a beer and cocktail. Chads steak was half the plate and a good 1.5cm thick !

We then Caught a cab with I feel may have been a psycho cab driver who didn't like asians on bikes too much ... up to Lombard Street. A peculiar street dubbed one of the crookedest in the world..... we watched the cars travelling through and maybe of more entertainment was the number of tourists that nearly got run over trying to take photos mid street :) there were even monks photographing the quaint tourist spot.

Fortunately as we were now uphill we strolled back to down town for Chads ice cream of the day :) this time we went to Ben and Jerry's!!! Did I mention we are rolling out of San Francisco?

That reminds me speaking of watching tourists get run over by a car .... ask Chad about how he nearly got me killed last night whilst trying to point out the array of strip clubs near little Italy ....

Down at fisherman wharf there are so many things besides the touristy attractions to look at..... the array of different personalities, nationalities and lifestyles all coming together. The homeless looking for money and openly saying it was to buy their weed..... (you can smell that stuff everywhere here) ...... street entertainers from singers, break dancers, musicians, clowns to not white sure what ....

Chad got pulled over by someone today and told he was receiving an official warning for smiling too much and being too affectionate with his wife ..... we thought the guy was serious at first .... until he introduced himself formally and he was raising money for the soup kitchen of which we had seen in action in our stay.....

Last of the day my friend google had showed me some mosaic stairs put together by a community of 200 neighbours ..... google looked impressively so we thought we would check it out before calling a day on San Fran......
well the taxi driver had never been asked to go there in the ten years he had been driving ..... and so a $60 cab fare and a few wrong turn laters we found them and they were beautiful.......not to mention the rewarding view we had of the back end of San Francisco over looking the Pacific Ocean.

So all in all San Francisco was Spectacular ! My new favourite word!!!! I hope to be back here again one day !!
