      Khao Sok #2

      The last section of this trip is once again totally different than the north or south. I would not repeat this trip again either. It is not touristy in the same way as the south. But doesn't have much to do with dm travel as I like it. Mostly families with kids travel this section and they keep to themselves. It is disconcerting that there is little mixing and sharing.
      It's clean, every minute scheduled and the food bland and lacking in spiciness. I miss Thai cuisine already....

      What I like most about traveling is meeting people and sharing some time or a section of the itinerary with them.
      It was on this section that I met Jenny and Joel. Jenny is from Uruguay, lived in Argentina for a few years before finding her home in Israel. Joel is American and met and fell in love with Jenny in Tel Aviv a long time ago. Both are much older than me and travel a lot. Both are incredibly nice and I enjoy the exchange. Jenny founded a startup in 2016 with the app Air Doctors and I am so impressed with her knowledge and dedication. To all the travelers out there: download the app! How can it be that you can order anything online, but can't find a doctor online in a foreign country? You can even book your doctor's appointment through this app, should you ever need one!

      AND they invited me to visit Israel and of course them....
      Actually I was planning to visit Morocco in April.... But who knows! As always, let me see how the airfares work out. I am the queen of cheap flights and in the end, the best and cheapest flight always decides where I will go next. And Israel is expensive... More expensive than Switzerland....
      Both will be in Austria in February with their grandchildren to ski. Maybe we will meet in Europe before my trip to Yemen/Israel.

      Shared my cabin on the catamaran with Lann. She is Vietnamese and lives in New York. A crazy person, totally her own, but heart on the right side. Together we slept on the deck every night. We are the same age, that connects. Lann will visit me in Bern and I look forward to meeting him again.

      And then there is Zipora and her son Jacob! With them I was allowed to enjoy the tuktuktour. Both are incredibly sweet and somehow very close to me. Zipora's parents have a typical European history as Jews. From Austria, to Italy, to Zurich, to emigration to the USA. And as mothers of children on the spectrum, we share quite a bit. I wish I had had their mindset when my daughter was younger. She travels the world with Jacob and has probably found the right balance between rest and activity that is right and doable for Jacob. As an aside, Jacob is so lovable, open and playful. As perhaps only children on the spectrum are. How I would love to share my travels with my kids!
      We plan to meet up again in Chiang Mai and then do the 11 day tour by tuktuk....

      And then there were all the other encounters with lovely people.

      Boottocht Khao Sok

      Activiteit 2 in deze geweldige omgeving is een dag naar Khao Sok National Park. Het is een gigantisch stuwmeer met prachtige rotsenformaties en de omgeving is weer groener dan groen. We stoppen onderweg nog bij een grot waar hele grote spinnen inzitten en maken een kleine hike door de jungle. We zwemmen in het heldere water en Lynn SUPt helemaal naar de overkant van het meer. Het is een heerlijke dag en we hebben ook zo'n geluk met het weer. Pas als de boot rond 16.00 terug gaat komt er bewolking en als we in het busje terug zitten de bijna standaard avondregenbui.Read more

      Day 109

      Khao Sok Tour beginnt

      Mit dem Minivan ging es zum Ufer und von dort an mit dem Boot weiter rein in den Nationalpark, bis wir bei unserer Unterkunft für eine Nacht angekommen sind. Floating Bungalows im National Park. Wow
      Und dann sind wir nach dem Mittag essen, los in den Jungle gewandert. Ich bin ein Riesen Fan von dem Regenwald, so eine Riesen Artenvielfalt, ein ganz anderes Klima und so wunderschön.      Read more

      Day 8

      Lake Ratchapraph aka "Lake Avatar"

      Was für ein schöner Tag... Aber der Reihe nach...

      Für heute hatten wir eine geführte Tour zum "Lake Avatar" gebucht. Der See heißt deswegen so, weil dort Filmaufnahmen zu dem gleichnamigen Film gemacht worden sind. 

      Also 06:00 aufstehen, Frühstücken und ab auf die 2 stündige Fahrt. Mit von der Partie waren eine altere Dame und ein, ich sag mal "Einzelkämpfer" (dazu komme ich später noch!😎) beide aus Frankreich.  

      Die Fahrt dorthin war echt lang aber angekommen, wurden wir durch eine phänomenale Kulisse belohnt. 

      Also ab aufs Boot und erstmal Richtung "Tropfsteinhöhle"....

      Und wie Ihr ja wisst "Ohne Schweiss kein Preis"...

      Um zur Höhle zu gelangen musste wir erstmal 1,5km durch den Dschungel wandern und die gleiche Strecke nochmal mit dem Bambusfloss hinter uns bringen. Aber jeder Meter war es Wert!

      Im Dschungel hatten wir dann auch die Chance Haustiere (Ja, ich meine dich Björn 😉) in Ihrer natürlichen Umgebung zu beobachten.

      Die Höhle war jetzt nicht so der Bringer, wenn man schon mal in Attendorn gewesen war.

      Also die 3km zurück und dann mit dem Boot zum Essen an einen unfassbar schönen Ort.
      Ein schwimmendes Yogahotel im See....

      Nach dem Essen dann Richtung "Highlight" der Tour dem "AVATAR Rock".

      Nach einer weiteren 40 minütigen Bootsfahrt angekommen, konnten wir dort auch baden gehen. Unser "Einzelkämpfer" hat dann auch gleich mal das Ufer erkundet und in einer alten Reuse einen gefangenen Varan (oder artverwandt) entdeckt. Den wir dann im Schweiße unseres Angesichtes befreit haben. (Jeden Tag eine Gute Tat)

      Danach haben wir uns dann wieder auf den Heimweg gemacht und auf dem Rückweg das einzige Wilde Tier, was wir im Dschungel nicht gesehen haben am Straßenrand fotografieren können....
      Einen Elephanten!

      Völlig erschöpft liegen wir im Bett und meine Frau hört in Dauerschleife "Africa von Rose Laurens" das hatte Sie schon den ganzen Tag vor sich hin gesungen 😎... ..(in dark deep jungle, I hear the wild drum...my heart beats faster...knowing my times come...🎶..)      Read more

      Ausflug Khao Sok Staudammm

      Heute haben wir einen Ausflug zum Khao Sok Staudamm gemacht. Eindrucksvolle Natur mit Kletterpartie und Höhlenwanderung. Es war wunderschön. 🥰

      Letzter Tag in Khao Sok

      Heute hab ich an einer Tour zum Cheow-Lan-See teilgenommen. Um 8:30 Uhr gings los. Um 10:00 Uhr waren wir am See und sind dort mit einem Longtailboot zum Wahrzeichen des Sees, den drei Felsen (hab den richtigen Namen wieder vergessen😅) und anschließend zu den Floating Bungalows gefahren, wo es erst mal Mittagessen gab. Danach sind wir zu einer Höhle gewandert, durch die wir dann auch durch sind - das einzige Licht waren unsere Stirnlampen. Teilweise mussten wir schwimmen. Danach ging es zurück zu den Bungalows. Dort hatten wir eine halbe Stunde frei, in der wir schwimmen konnten. Nachdem es dann noch Obst gab, ging es wieder zurück zur Unterkunft. Die Tour war einfach großartig (bis auf den Zeitpunkt, an dem unser Guide versucht hat eine Vogelspinne aus ihrem Versteck zu locken...) und wir haben viel gesehen, auch von der Tierwelt.😍🦋🦎🤸‍♀️Read more

      Day 3 - Elephant Hills - Cheow Larn Lake

      We woke again to the three gongs and made our way to breakfast before we left for our day trip to the lake. We were particularly looking forward to this as the pictures looked incredible however we were a bit sad when we realised you don’t actually stay in the floating bungalows on the tour we booked.

      We all set out on a big open sided truck nicknamed the ‘Bone Shaker’ by DD and Julie to our first stop was another market in a village called Takhun. Much of the same hippy elephant trousers and dry bags for phones but we walked around all the same. Back on the truck our second stop was the very impressive Rajjaprabha Dam look out. Rajjaprabha Dam creates a man-made lake of 185sq km’s otherwise known as Cheow Larn Lake. Its purpose is electricity generation, irrigation, flood control, and fishing. To flood this large area 385 families were resettled and set up with rubber farms, land and money to help get them going. There were two viewpoints at the lookout, the first we went to was a great view of the lake. What we could see was only a very small fraction we found out later once on the lake. There are more than one hundred islands in the lake and it stretches over 60km from North to South. The other view point was of the dam and electric city.

      Next stop was the pier where we all hoped on a traditional long-tail boat for about an hours trip to Elephant Hill's very own Rainforest. Apart from getting pretty soaked every so often the views on the lake and the sheer size of it were incredible. Once at the floating camp we stocked up on a yummy Thai spread for lunch.

      Lunch over we had some free time to chill at the camp. We decided to take a kayak out to explore the lake in our own time and a little closer to the edge where we hoped to see some monkeys and other animals. Unfortunately the first couple to see monkeys got a bit too close and scared them off so we only saw the back of one retreating deeper into the trees. It was nice paddling around the edge of the lake for an hour or so though. We were also allowed to go for a swim off the end of the bar so once we were done feeding some HUGE fish from the back of the bar we took a quick dip in the gorgeous and surprisingly warm emerald water.

      All done for the day we hoped back in the long-tail boat. This time it was my turn to get wet, sitting close to the side and soaking I got. So much so it looked like I had an accident when I got back on dry land. Back on the Bone Shaker we headed back to camp. For the evening we were done with documentaries and school kids dancing so we chilled until the cooking demo which today was a Papaya Salad and dinner.      Read more
