With almost all our worldly possessions we arrive at a very quiet T2 at Heathrow Airport. Today we head for Buenos Aires via Zurich and Brazil.
Its been great to catch up with family and friends in the UK but time for another adventure. Read more

Cemetery of Recoleta

The Cemetery of Recoleta - the first public cemetery in the city - was built in 1822.
It owes its name to the convent of the "recoleto" monks. The church "Nuestra Señora del Pilar" belonged to this congregation, and it was in the old orchard of the Basilica that the cemetery was built.
Throughout its five hectares, stand out the majestic pantheons and mausoleums belonging to many of the most important characters in Argentine history.
Among the most popular locations are the mausoleum of Eva Perón (Evita), Luis Federico Leloir and Adolfo Bioy Casares
Built in marble and decorated with sculptures the constructions that make up the Recoleta Cemetery are the works of outstanding architects and artists. Well worth a visit.Read more

We signed up for another Intrepid Tour this time covering the main hikes in Patagonia. We met up in Buenos Aires and flew as a group to El Calafate.

Our first hike in Patagonia was to Laguna Torre. We knew we were in for a challenge as heavy rain was forecast. It was cloudy but every so often we got glimpses of the snow capped mountains.
"Laguna Torre" translates to Tower Lagoon. It is a stunning glacial lake located in Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia, Argentina, at the foot of the dramatic Cerro Torre mountain. Unfortunately today it was cloudy, overcast and lightly snowing. Fortunately no rain!Read more

This mountain has been on my bucket list for years - too old to climb it but not too old to enjoy its majestic splendor. On the border between Argentina and Chile this mountain peaks at 3405m. The clouds loomed for most of the day but as we got closer the skies cleared - we even saw condors and eagles. Magical day.Read more

Today we boarded the mini bus and headed back to El Calafate - a 3 hour drive ending at the Rincon El Calafate Hotel. Wandered around town and popped to the Glaciarium for some insight into Glacier formation and movement.Read more

The Perito Moreno is a glacier located in Los Glaciares National Park in southwest Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, and originated in the Magallanes Region in Chile. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentine Patagonia. Absolutely stunning scenery and we enjoyed a long but beautiful hike up and onto the Glacier itself wearing crampons!Read more

Today we headed by local bus across the border to Chile to hike the famous Torres del Paine mountain range in the Magallanes region of Chile. Still snow on the ground and we are camping for the next 3 nights! We stopped off to walk to the Mirador Salto Grande a waterfall on the Paine River, after the Nordenskjöld Lake, within the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.Read more

Mirador Grey Hike

We broke camp and said goodbye (very happily) to our tents, cold showers and non flushing loos! One more walk to do to complete our "W" which incorporated Mirador Grey. From the Grey gatehouse, we set off towards our destination, crossing the Pingo River on a wooden suspension bridge. Then, we passed through a forest of lenga and coigüe trees, straight out of a fairy tale, and finally arrived at the dark sand beach, from where we could glimpse fragments of the great glacier we were heading towards.Read more

Contining on from our hike we headed to Puerto Natales for a comfort break then Punta Arenas a city near the tip of Chile's southernmost Patagonia region. Located on the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it's often used as base for excursions to the surrounding wilderness and Antarctica. The Plaza Muñoz Gamero has a memorial to explorer Ferdinand Magellan, and the Museo Nao Victoria features a replica of one of his galleons.
The locals celebrate Halloween by ghoulishly dusfiguring their cars then racing them around the streets for 3 hours! Took a few photos before we met up for dinner at a fab restaurant. Only spent a few hours here!Read more

What was planned as an 8 hour bus/ferry crossing to Ushuaia turned out to be a 30+ hour marathon due to appalling weather conditions. It was so windy even the fully loaded bus swayed from side to side. The 30 minute ferry sailing across the Magallanes Strait was hair-raising to say the least but we and our luggage all made it.Read more

Our final hike at the end of the world was to the Emerald Lake. It barely stopped snowing all day but better snow than rain. It was at times tough going as we trampled through feet of snow, sadly the Emerald was more Grey but my experience was lifted when several pretty birds landed on me and pinched my sandwich - surreal or what! We properly celebrated Garys birthday together at a fab restaurant on Ushuaia.Read more

Time to head back to Buenos Aires ..... some folk had to return home to work! Trouble free flight back for a final group dinner before saying our goodbyes 👋 Lots of washing to do once we worked out where to buy laundry tokens. Then caught a Tango Show at the famous at Tango Porteno.

Joined a walking tour of La Boca (The Mouth) a famous city neighborhood known for its colour, the Boca Juniors football club, and tango. Originally an important wealthy settlement till yellow fever decimated the population and it fell into disrepair till 10 million immigrants descended in the early 20th century bringing life, colour and hope. Football became the new religion!Read more

María Eva Duarte de Perón 7 May 1919 – 26 July 1952, better known as Eva Perón or by the nickname Evita was an Argentine politician, activist, actress, and philanthropist who served as First Lady of Argentina from June 1946 until her death due to cancer in July 1952, as the wife of Argentine President Juan Perón. She was born in poverty in the rural village of Los Toldos, in the Pampas, as the youngest of five children. In 1934, at the age of 15, she moved to the nation's capital of Buenos Aires to pursue a career as a stage, radio, and film actress. She married Perón in 1945, when he was still an army colonel, and was propelled onto the political stage when he became President in 1946. She became a central figure of Peronism and Argentine culture because of the Eva Perón Foundation, a charitable organization. She achieved much for women and social injustice.

Teatro Colon

The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires is one of the world's most important opera houses. Its rich and prestigious history, along with the exceptional acoustics and architecture of its building, place it on par with the best worldwide.
In its first location, the Teatro Colón operated from 1857 to 1888, when it was closed for the construction of a new auditorium inaugurated in May 1908, with a performance of Aida. In its early years, the Colón contracted foreign companies for its seasons; from 1925 onward, it had its own resident companies —Orchestra, Ballet, and Chorus, and its own production workshops, by the 1930s, to organize its own seasons.
We visited during a lighting rehearsal for La Traviata (completely sold out) so the main auditorium was in complete darkness!
We caught a free concert in the Golden Hall a couple of days after our tour.Read more

It opened as a bookstore in 2000 and is considered the largest in South America and one of the most beautiful in the world. On stage a cafeteria operates, and in the basement vinyl records are sold.Read more

You can be forgiven for thinking these pics are of the Norfolk Broads - Tigre Delta is the Buenos Aires version. Located at the bottom of the Paraná Delta, near its mouth in the Rio de la Plata. It is a popular tourist destination to enjoy nature and boat rides that depart from the river station of the city of Tigre. The Fruit Port is another major attraction, known for its local crafts and produce.Read more

James. Kelvin, Cathy and Cliff flew into Buenos Aires today and we met at the Hilton ahead of our very early flight tomorrow back to Ushuaia to join our expedition ship Viking Polaris. Time for a quick meal out and spot of sightseeing with tour guide Gary around Caminito and Puerto Madero. It may be while till I can post more footprints as unlikely to have Internet on board Polaris - back mid December!
