      Flying Over Greenland

      21. juni 2023, Greenland Sea ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

The first part of the flight was crossing the ocean towards the coast of Greenland. There was much excitement and taking of photos when the east coast was spotted. There were no clouds so we had a fantastic view of the coast and the many thousands of icebergs, which none of us had expected to see. I'm not sure why, but we didn't and it was an amazing sight. Mind you, having said that they can be seen using Google Earth but I just never looked before. 🙄

Later, over central Greenland somewhere, we saw mountain tops rising up through the ice sheet and once more, the phones and cameras were snapping frantically.

Those were the only photo opportunities given to us because soon after the clouds obscured our view.

(The GPS coordinates on my phone didn't update in the plane so the location for this footprint is completely wrong.)

      Tag 3: Longyearbyen

      31. maj 2023, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

:) meine Kabinennachbarin jedenfalls schlief.
Mal schauen, was mich heute erwartet ✌🏻😎

      Aufbruch zu den Westmännern

      23. august 2022, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

      Reykjavik - Day 7 - Whales

      9. november 2022, Greenland Sea ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

On day seven of our journey, Sheri and I decided to add whale watching to the itinerary. We started out the morning with coffee and cocoa at our Te and Kaffi shop, worked for a couple of hours to entertain all of you with our adventure (what you thought this stuff just appears)?

After lunch at what is now our favorite restaurant, Apotek, we headed for the boat and the open waters. Thankfully it was a beautiful calm day so no need for sea sick pills. The boat was full but there was plenty of space for everyone.

The tour was scheduled for a 3 hour tour (Gilligan’s Island anyone?). An hour out, an hour searching for whales, an hour back. These Icelanders keep everything running on a tight schedule which is good and bad (mostly good).

We reached the area where the whales were generally found and almost immediately they spotted a Minke whale. The types of whales we would be seeing are more solitary than school species, so seeing one does not guarantee you will see another. This Minke was shy and only showed up a couple of times and then went on his/her way.

Then the clowns arrived in the form of white beaked dolphins. They’re fairly large, brown striped with a white snout (hence white beaked). They run in schools so a lot of splashing and jumping by the younger kids made for fun viewing.

Then the spouting of a humpback whale was spotted and the fun began. The whale took a liking to our boat and played with us breaching several times. The it decided to go under the boat and appear on the other side. Well worth the time and trip to see these amazing creatures.
Videos are being uploaded in pieces due to FindPenguins restrictions. The first video is a view of us leaving the harbor. The second is of the dolphins.

Finished the evening with dinner at a Scandinavian restaurant. Food was pretty good,

      4. bis 6. Seetag

      31. august 2022, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Day 9, At Sea

      9. september 2017, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Hello All, so a sea day today, and indeed for the next 3 days too. Time to recharge the batteries. Last night we were once again very lucky to experience the Northern Lights but they were a lot more active than they were the night before. It was tremendous. The decks were packed but we were there early enough. The captain 👩‍✈️ blacked out the top of the ship and then announced that they were visible which is when we were invaded by the masses. It was a wonderful show, they were so much more vivid than the night before and to be sailing through the Greenland Sea in total darkness with these beautiful multicoloured natural phenomenon's was a once in a lifetime feeling. However, that being said, the previous night was special as there weren't that many people there and it was our first sighting so a bit special really.

Well all that took its toll on today really, as it was gone 1am when we went to bed, it was 10.28am when our little peepers opened this morning. Being served for breakfast was off as the restaurant closes its doors at 9.30, however the buffet breakfast is a bit more forgiving so we went to that. We then went and had a leisurely cuppa at the back of the ship before having a wander around the ship. There was a certain buzz about as everyone was talking about the Northern Lights from last night. The weather on the open decks hadn't been brilliant, only managed 10 degrees, very cloudy and wet but that didn't deter us from watching the P!nk concert from the hot tub out on the deck. We spent a bit of time this afternoon watching Spooks from the beginning on the iPad before heading down to the restaurant for dinner. A lovely meal as always and we are now sat upstairs at the back of the ship with a drink whilst I write this.

So, that's it from us tonight, hope you are all well, until tomorrow, Au Revoir.

      "Seetag"

      22. april 2022, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☁️ -8 °C

      Prins Christian Sund

      24. august 2018, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Despite the drizzle and low hanging mist, Prins Christian Sund was spectacular, with glacier tongues coming down from the ice sheet straight into the sea, chunks of ice floating past and steep-sided mountains disappearing up into the mist.Læs mere

      Spitzbergen

      14. september 2009, Greenland Sea ⋅ ☀️ -1 °C
