Dag 4 - Van Turkye na Cappadocia

      9 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Today's Penguin isn't that long, seeing that wr didn't do that much today. We woke up early, packed our stuff and went to the Asian side of Turkey to go and hire a car. We decided to take a Yellow Taxi, for both the experience and the fact that we did not want to run up the rocky hills with out heavy baggage to the public transport. Everyone warns you that the local people always try to take advantage of the tourists and that is definitely true. Eventhough the meter said that we should only pay TRY 120,the driver refused to gove us our luggage if we don't pay him TRY220. Apparently the extra 100 was because he had to drive through the tunnel. We rented our car, went for breakfast (we ordered our food from pictures, seeing that no one understood ANY English and the menu was in Turkish) and then quickly went to the mall to go buy a car charger. The Asian side is a lot more developed, quiter and modern. We then embarked on our journey to Cappadocia. The speed limit is 140 km/h and that definitely made our lifes better. The roads here are in great condition and they have a petrol station every 30 km or so. The scenery is also beautiful. We reached Cappadocia around 19:00 and quickly went to a coffee shop to look for accommodation. We booked into a Cave hotel and it's amazing! It's definitely a bonus to have an Aircon, because this place gets HOT. We then quickly left to go and get Takeaways (Still Turkish food) and now we are taking an early night, to rest our for all the other adventures that awaits us...
All our love from our cave!♡

      Dag 5 - Cappadocia

      10 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

More probeer ons weer! So lekker! Alles hier is vrek goedkoop. Alkohol is baie baie duur hier.

Today we had a very chilled day. All of the tours we wanted to book was fully booked and we then decided that we will spend the next two nights here as well, to do everything we want. We will be doing the Red tour tomorrow and then the Air balloon and Green tour the day after. We accidentally slept through our alarm to go and see the Air balloons this morning, so we will try again tomorrow morning! So we slept in and then had a real Turkish breakfast. It's AMAZING! They have all of these little foods, pastries, spreads and stuff that they pack out for you on your table and then you have your own little food festival. We quickly went to the Mall afterwards and then we drove around, doing some sightseeing. The caves and places are not something one can describe in words. It's incredible! Everyone here is super friendly and you can manage quite nicely with Google Translate and pictures when you don't understand each other. The lady at the cave hotel is also very nice and she's so helpful with all the bookings and arrangements. Seeing that our day wasn't that interesting, I decided that I will name a few things that's interesting to me... Everything is so cheap here. Tonight we had dinner for R250. This included the following: 1 Coke, 1 Very disturbingly bad juice (I didn't know what I ordered and turns out it was black carrot root juice, it was disgusting!), 1 Soup with bread, two full meals and 4 bottles of water. We ate in the mall and I think it's like a type of fast food place. When your food arrives, they also come around with boiling fat/oil (I'm not 100% sure what it is) and throw some over your food. You can taste the cholesterol, but it's still nice. The Turkish people loves meat, bread and cheese and that's obviously amazing to us... Alcohol is very very expensive here. Everyone looks after the stray cats and dogs. There's food, water and milk placed all over for them. The dogs are also super chilled. They don't bark at anyone and they just walk around and lay around where they want to. The stray dogs here are a lot bigger than the one's in we get in South Africa. We also saw the cutest puppy today and ended up giving it water. They drive on the right side of the road and of course that means that the steering wheel is situated on the left side. It's a daily thing for us to go to the wrong side of the car, laugh and then walk around to the right side. It's quite confusing! It's not only the food that's cheap, but also the clothes and electrical equipment. It's quite a problem, because with these prices, one just want to buy, buy and BUY! A lot of their roads, especially in Istanbul, are paved with small square rocks and it makes A LOT of noise trying to get your bag over it! They also have great network coverage. You don't struggle to signal anywhere, except for our cave that we live in at this stage. This is also the reason behind my late Penguins, eventhough I actually write them on the correct day. That will be all from our side for today...
      All our love♡♡♡

      Cappadocia, Turkey!

      10 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

      Miles: 4.6 steps: 12046
      Flights stairs: 41

Cappadocia is THE place in the world for hot air ballooning. Hundreds of them launch every morning at sunrise. We decided we got to sleep too late to get up early the first morning, but I ended up waking up on my own around 6:00, so went to our terrace to see if it was too late or if it gave me a view or not. Was happy to be able to still see a little more than 60 in the sky!! I was looking into the sun so pics were difficult, but it was quite the sight.

Usually when we’re in cities we get around on our own - subways, trams, buses, Uber, taxis - but here in this village, that’s not so easy. We either have to walk or take a tour. So today we took a group tour - highlights of cappadocia. It was okay. They showed us a few of the limestone formations (fairy chimneys), went to Panorama Point, to Goreme open air museum, a carpet weaving demonstration, imagination valley (formations that look like animals), and a pottery demonstration. It was all every interesting.

I had no idea we were in the hub of the ancient Christian world - where they first settled after being pushed out of the Rome. Pretty crazy the history here. They settled here because it was so easy to “make” housing - all you needed was a hammer and chisel, and you could carve yourself a home. There were churches everywhere - small cut outs that could only hold 10 people or so with beautiful paintings on the walls.

After the tour we went for a walk up to “Sunset viewpoint” for the sunset. It was pretty beautiful. Then headed back home to call it a day!

      Early morning

      11 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ 🌙 61 °F

I usually just post once a day, but going to need two for today! We got up at 4:30 this morning and hiked up to the viewpoint to watch the hot air balloons launch. It was SPECTACULAR!! I’ve seen hot air balloons in Oregon, but there were so many more here combined with the sunrise and the landscape … phenomenal!! This is what I came to Cappadocia for! Not to necessarily ride in one, but to see literally hundreds of them fill the sky together like this. I WILL ride in one, but it will have to wait for a few more countries. 😃 Czytaj więcej

      Dag 6 - Cappadocia

      11 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Laat my aan 'n Mafia mannetjie dink!

I finally heard my alarm this morning and with that our day started nice and early... We woke up early, for sunrise and went to the viewing point to go and see the hot air balloons. It's really something one cannot explain in words and it felt like we were living in a movie! We then went back to the hotel, had some breakfast and then the tourbus came to pick us up. We had a nice and full tour and saw a lot of different things. Our first stop was at Imagination Valley, were the boulders looks like a lot of different things. The most significant one, like a camel. From there we went to the Outdoor Museum, which also contains a church in one of the boulders. Unfortunately one is not allowed to take any photos of the church or inside of the church. The guy working there was very strict and makes me think of someone in the Mafia. It's quite an experience to see how the people changed these boulders, which is more like sand, into a living space. Next we went to the Monk Valley, were the Monks used to live, also in caves/boulders. Damian climbed into one of the houses, but I decided it's safer for me to stay outside and take a photo or two. The ice cream guy was full of jokes and just before we left, he grabbed my hand and put a cone ring on it... We then went to the Onyx and Souvenir shop. There they showed us how they cut and polish the Onyx, quite interesting! They also sell a lot of jewellery there. We quickly stopped for lunch after that, that was also in a cave. We then went to the Pottery place, where they showed us how they make all the plates, bowls and so out of clay. Very impressive! We ended of the tour at the Panoramic View, where one could take photos. It was a very nice day, but extremely hot, seeing that the aircon of the bus didn't work... After they dropped us at the hotel, we quickly went for dinner and then hopped into bed, as we have a VERY early morning tomorrow!

      Cappodocia!!

      11 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

      Miles: 2.0 Steps: 7450
      Flights stairs: 20

Later in the evening we went on three hour ATV sunset tour of the different valleys. Jordan had never driven a 4-wheeler so had a blast. She had ridden on them, but was never old enough to drive.

The tour was fantastic. We were in a group of about 15 with three guides who took us everywhere. When we would get to viewing spots, we would then see exactly how many ATV tours were going on .. there were hundreds of them!! But most of the time when we were driving, we felt very isolated or alone. Shows how big of an area this is.

The day ended as it began. Us sitting on a hillside watching the sun do it’s thing … sunrise to sunset. Gorgeous day!

      Last day in Cappadocia

      12 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

      Miles: 1.0 Steps: 2424
      Flights stairs: 3

We had a lazy day today - slept in, sat on the terrace over looking the city, and continued to plan the last of our countries. Only left to hit the ATM and for dinner.

We’ve found a restaurant we like here VERY much and have gone back 3 of our 4 nights. A waiter has adopted us and treated us like gold. Gave us free Turkish Pomegranate tea every night. (which by the way, is awesome). Tonight he suggested we order pottery kebabs, the food of Cappadocia - so we did. It comes flaming to the table. Basically just a really tender pot roast. At the end of dinner, he came over and sat down with us for about 20 min. Learned all about him and his life (Immigrant from Afghanistan). I was kind of shocked, but it was really nice talking and learning about his life and culture. He may have been possibly interested in dating Jordan. 😃

We’ve felt very safe here in Göreme, but the roads are something else. The whole city is torn apart and cars are constantly just spinning their wheels in the gravel trying to get up the hills. It’s very interesting, and at times looks war torn.

      Cappadocia 1

      11 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

      Seid gespannt. :)

      17 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

When we arrived in Göreme, we first checked into the hotel and walked to the Sunset Viewpoint. Afterwards we explored Göreme and had a look at the rock installations.

Before we went back to the hotel we went to eat at Kepabzade its not very cheap, but the food is delicious.

Our room has a private sauna and jacuzzi, so we spent the rest of the evening relaxing.

      2. Day Cappadocia I

      18 sierpnia 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Göreme is a municipality in Cappadocia. The place was called Matiana in Byzantine times and was renamed Göreme in 1928.

The town is the centre of the Göreme National Park. The landscape around Göreme is characterised by striking tuff formations, some of which are hollowed out, the so-called fairy chimneys (Turkish: peri bacaları).

The first Christians used them to lead a devotional life in seclusion, but above all as a hiding place from their enemies (Persians, Romans, Arabs, Mongols). They not only built churches and chapels, which were carved into the rock, but entire residential complexes for several thousand people.

On the second day, we decided to visit the national park early and on the way to see some churches. Particularly noteworthy are the Al Nazar, Karanlik and Dark churches.

At midday sun we went to our accommodation and rested.

In the late afternoon we took a taxi to Pasabag and visited the Fairy Chimney’s. Finally we hiked back the way we came, which took about 1 1/2h. But the surroundings are very picturesque and worth it.

Small criticism: In Göreme there are no classic dolmuses (minibuses), most of them work for agencies and specially booked group tours. Moreover, every sight in nature is monetised.
