London Week #2

This week I tried to get out more to appreciate the city and surrounding areas. I visited Borough Market and had some diverse, amazing food! Although I saw it with my family a few weeks ago, I also went to Tower Bridge, quintessential London.Continue to appreciate the autumn: leaves changing color and chilly weather.

This last Friday, some friends of mine from the Cal Lu cohort and I went to Seven Sisters Cliffs. I had seen a lot of websites that suggested we go so I convinced the group! It was one of our best days of study abroad so far. The white cliffs were incredibly unique and it felt so peaceful to restart in nature after being in the city. Au hasard des rues

Après notre petite visite de Camden nous décidons d'aller visiter le british museum mais finalement la visite tourne court au vu de la file d'attente interminable. Nous cherchons un endroit pour se poser et boire un coup et désespéré nous finissons dans un Nero café (si si Thomas c'est une chaîne !!)
Finalement comme nous avons rendez vous en fin de journée au Sky garden on décide de marcher le long de la Tamise pour se perdre dans les rues. Bonne initiative on tombe sur des petits quartiers supers sympas et la balade sur les quais est un vrai plaisir.
À 18h nous arrivons devant le building pour monter au Sky garden. Bon le temps ne nous permettra pas de voir le coucher de soleil mais la vue est quand même plutôt sympa.
Et enfin nous terminons notre journée par un bon steak au Flat Iron London Bridge faut pas déconner on l'aura mérité avec nos 30 000 pas !!! 🤪

Restful couple of days in London for me while Jacques ventured up north. Didn’t take too many photos as I was too busy in relax mode 😜 Jacques came back to London for our last two nights in the UK. A few highlights from our short stay were:

📍 Spending quality time with Stef and Julia (Jacques’ cousins) and some sunny London weather ☀️

📍 Catching up with Brad, Rach & Brad’s parents. So nice to meet them!

📍 Produce shopping with Julia @ Borough Market. The nut man and the spice shop were so good. Amazing quality and variety!

📍 Trying Ethiopian food at Maltby Market. Incredible!

📍 Cooking with Julia for her friends from India. These guys were lovely!

📍 Day to myself walking around Borough Yards and Bermondsey street, tried a few different coffee shops, lentil soup and even found a pastel de nata shop 🥮

📍 Catching up with my friend Georgia who I used to work with at SFX and is now living in London. We went to Neal’s Yard which was a super cute courtyard

📍 Jacques caught up with an old cricket friend from Dandenong, Cam Forsyth as well as spending some extra time with Brad before we left

📍 Drinks in the sun with Jacques @ a pub on the river called The Angel, then a walk through Rotherhithe. Saw a cute pup that looked heaps like Winnie and talked to the owner for a while 🐶

📍 Walking through Shoreditch - this place was super hipster and had the coolest vintage shops, markets and little bars everywhere. Want to come back to this area!

📍 Shoreditch House & Pen Yen Restaurant - going to this members club with Julia and Stef, very cool concept , wish we had one in Melbourne! Funky Asian fusion restaurant and pool on the rooftop 🍸Read more

Borough Markets where you can buy any fresh produce and multiple Takeaway stalls.
I had a Kate & Sidney pie (steak & kidney).
Was awesome.

Borough Market is a wholesale and retail market hall in Southwark, London, England. It is one of the largest and oldest food markets in London,[1][2] with a market on the site dating back to at least the 12th century. The present buildings were built in the 1850s, and today the market mainly sells specialty foods to the general public.Read more

London - erste Eindrücke

Trotzdem - ganz verschenken mochten wir diesen Tag schließlich auch nicht, und so stapften wir dann doch den Weg ohne Koffer retour, vorbei am Tower, wieder über die stopfend volle Towerbridge und immer wieder mit toller Sicht auf die moderne Skyline.
Auf der Südseite der Themse schließlich den Fluß entlang führte unser Weg über den Borough Market.

Hölle - was für ein Gedränge hier - vor lauter Menschen sah man nichts von all den sicherlich verlockenden Angeboten, wobei unser Magen inzwischen auch sehr deutlich machte, daß wir seit frühmorgens im Hotel nichts gegessen hatten. Endlich entdeckten wir etwas abseitig vom Gewühl ein nettes kleines Restaurant und nach einem wirklich leckeren Burger und einem Glas Wein sah die Welt durchaus freundlicher aus.Read more

Soho and Borough Market

Visited Oxford street and Regent street to check out the shopping areas. Then headed to Borough Market south of The Thames to grab a bite. Got a nice snapshot of the Tower Bridge. Headed back to SoHo to a Wetherspoons and called it day by having Indian food at a nice place called Yatri at Euston.Read more

Southwark Carhedral

Die Southwark Cathedral kann man besichtigen, so wie fasst alle Gotteshäuser in London. Von Ihrer Art her ist es ein sehr, sehr schönes und imposantes Bauwerk.

Bereits im Domesday Book aus dem Jahr 1086 findet sich ein Hinweis auf die Kirche. Dass an dieser Stelle schon im Jahr 606 ein Kloster bestanden habe, ist aber umstritten. Thomas Becket soll hier wenige Tage vor seiner Ermordung gepredigt haben.
Die Kirche fiel mehrmals Bränden zum Opfer, so 1212 und zu Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts. Sie diente als Begräbnisstätte bekannter Schriftsteller, so von John Gower und John Fletcher. Vom Kirchturm aus entwarf Wenzel Hollar seinen „Long View of London“ aus 1638, eine bekannte Panoramadarstellung.
Das Hauptschiff wurde im Zuge der Einrichtung der Erzdiöszese 1895 von Sir Arthur Blomfield neu entworfen. 1988 wurde das Gebäude grundlegend renoviert.Read more
