Castle Rock hostel to Mayfield gdns

      July 25, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

After a "continental breakfast" at the hostel it was time to make my way to the b and b my host family had booked for me. My hosts had gotten the date of their holiday wrong, adding another day until I housesit for them.

I had taken a night time photo out of my hostel window (uploaded yesterday) and a few on the way down the Royal mile.. looking forward to coming back into the city after settling into my house sit..

Taking the bus from the high street, I arrived too early to check in to the accommodation, so walked down to a church just across the road. There was a beautifully kept garden and seat just waiting for me. No sooner sitting than a white haired woman wearing blue jeans and tops, handbag and shopping bags on arms came through the gates making her way across the grass to say a curious "hello" head on one side looking down at me. Her smile made me promptly respond with an "hello" right back to her.

She portrayed a sense of purpose about coming into the church grounds and soon let me know she was there to prepare a food for a weekly service and lunch group. I responded to her by telling her about my travels.

An invitation to join her inside the church to help with making sandwiches and joining the group for the service and lunch ensued. I gladly accepted. I met Flora, Julia, Susan, Christine and Ian the minister along with various other members of the congregation.

The service was just great, the hymns old favourites, so a lovely meditative time in the presence of people who have known each other for a long time. Exchanging phone numbers, a few photos taken after lunch, invitations to call if I need anything, and I was off to check into my accommodation for the night.

Another two floors with a circling staircase to navigate, I finally made it to my room. Again tired but happy to be resting for the afternoon now, quietly warmed by the new friends I had made.

I noticed out of my window the stunning outline of Arthur's seat and took a few photos as the sun began to lower in the sky. It's not so visible here but the colours changing was amazing to see on that craggy big rock. Emails and maps seen to for tomorrow to navigate where I'm going I.e.. Liberton, south east Edinburgh, I fell asleep, knowing that's tomorrow's journey.

      Craigmiller Castle

      May 3 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Although this castle is still in Edinburgh it felt a world away. Not an only a world away because there were only 4 other people there, but yes, a world away because they filmed several episodes of Outlander there.

The more we travel the more We love how little structure there is when touring places in other countries. There were no monitors telling us to “stay out of there”, “Don’t touch that”, “Use the handrail”, “don’t fall off”. As a matter of fact it was the opposite. We were told to touch anything, there was a rope as a handrail, and few places had little more than a turret to save you from falling. Everyone who visits is left to themselves and to their own level and interest to walk around and explore. So refreshing that this country believes in the best of people, people will be polite and considerate and somehow survival of the fittest will win out.

      Edinburgh Scotland

      August 11, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland (although Glasgow is bigger by population). It's population is 527K making it similar to Genoa by population and between Riga (641K) and Tallinn (449K), to give some comparisons.

It has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century. As of a 1999 election the Scottish Parliament moved back to Edinburgh from London, solidifying its self rule.

Emily and Dave were blown away by the architecture of Edinburgh. It's mostly monochromatic "yellow gray" facades are very beautiful. This was exemplified by St. Mary's Cathedral, which was just down the street from us. We've seen some beautiful cathedrals in our travels, but this one was very different. It's not as intricate, per se, as Florence's or Siena's Cathedral, but it's (again) "yellow gray" bricks were beautiful. We could stop taking pictures of it under different times of day.

The cuisine was interesting. We tried the obvious favorites of Fish and chips, the "Full Scottish Breakfast," which included Haggis, and lastly some Scotch. Besides the "FSB," the workday takeaway breakfast of choice seems to be the Breakfast Roll (we also saw it called the Morning Roll). It's really nothing more than a vet narrowly defined Breakfast sandwich. The bread is always a fairly big roll (cut in half and buttered). It is filled with eggs and/or sausage and/or haggis and/or a hashbrown. I say "and/or," because you pay per item. Although one item is included, which I assume would be reserved for the egg. Interestingly, cheese was NEVER an available topping. Not one single time we saw it on the menu.

      Royal botanical gardens

      July 31, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Pouring of rain this morning, so hummed and haaa'd about going out, but, in the end got my trusty poncho on and off I went. No bus to take me all the way, so getting off at princes st I walked the rest of the way enjoying the landscape still. I'd had to stop at the mobile shop which just happened to be right next door to St Mary's Catholic church...which I remember was where the school had their services? Macayla and James will remember.

I loved the gardens so beautifully kept and superb for a big gulp of fresh air. Rhodies aren't out just yet but the Wildflowers were wonderful. A stop at the cafe for a cuppa and I was off home again.

    • Day 20

      Rosslyn Chapel, Roslin

      May 16, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Suzie - Wow!! What a day today was!!! Today, we went on a pre-booked tour that I have been looking forward to for months!!

We started off getting lost even with Google's 'help' and almost missed the tour. Luckily we found where we needed to be (thanks Nik!) and the bus was still there 😀😀

We drove to Rosslyn Chapel to start off with, not far from Edinburgh. Exquisite is the best word I can use, however it doesn't come close. The chapel dates from 1446 and was built by Sir William St Clair. Then the Reformation happened and the Chapel fell into disrepair. In 1650, Oliver Cromwell attacked nearby Rosslyn Castle and stabled his horses in the Chapel. The Chapel again fell into disrepair with the ruins being used by people in the 1800's for picnics and sketching. It's only been relatively recently that the Chapel has been restored to its original glory.

It's just so beautifully stunning and the carvings are amazing. No photography or videography is allowed in the Chapel.

      Rosslyn Chapel

      June 1, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Read more

      Rosslyn Chapel

      March 7 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

If you’re a fan of the Da Vinci Code or Ancient Aliens, you are probably familiar with Rosslyn Chapel. Founded 600 years ago by the Earl of Caithness, William Sinclair, it now holds many mysteries involving the Knights Templar, the Holy Grail, Freemasonry, and the bloodline of Jesus Christ. Before Dan Brown’s novel came out in 2003, they had so few visitors, they were barely able to keep up with the maintenance of the chapel. Immediately after its release, everything changed. They now get many thousands of visitors and have been able to finance a complete restoration as well as the addition of a visitor center. People come to see the symbolic carvings in the walls and pillars which are said to hold secret meanings. Historians say none of this is based in fact, but the chapel plays it well. They include references to the novel and film in the narrative of their guides. They make a point of showing visitors every symbol discussed in the novel, and they direct you to a place where a scene from the movie was filmed. Exit through the gift shop and you’ll see displays of the novels and conspiracy books along with guides to help you crack the code. To keep things a bit of a mystery, they do not allow photography inside the chapel. I had to wait until the curator needed a break to snap one interior photo. The other one — from the crypt — was a sneaky shot made possible by being the last one out during the tour. This place was was great though. It was definitely on my list of must-see Scottish sites. I just love a good mystery.Read more
