      Café am Morgen

      September 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      Gottesdienst in London-West

      September 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      Ai Weiwei exhibit

      May 31, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The Design Museum had a special exhibit of Ai Weiwei's work. It was called "Making Sense" and the catalogue described it as "a commentary on design and what it reveals about our changing values. ... Through material culture, he explores the tensions between past and present, hand and machine, precious and worthless, construction and destruction."Read more

“All roads lead to . . . Harrods”

      May 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today started with visiting 2 famous roads and finished at you-know-where.

We were out the door just before 8am to catch buses (rather than the Underground) to our first destination - Abbey Road. Loss was VERY keen for this as she is a Beatles fan from way back😉 - so I went along for the ride to humour her.

We found it without any trouble and I did the obligatory pedestrian crossing at this famous location that featured on the album cover of the same name. We sent a message home to the kids to have a look at the live Webcam that has been installed at the site (which they duly did) and they did in fact see us (and captured some screenshots of us holding up the traffic unnecessarily) to ‘relive’ this moment from 1969. It was all a bit of fun - but it was very bleak this morning so we took a brisk walk then bus ride(s) to our second famous road - Portobello road, Notting Hill.

I have created a separate footprint for the kids for this one. (Adults, if you have no interest in Paddington bear and his love for Portobello road then don’t bother with that footprint).

We had a bit of a look around the district, noting the variety of pastel painted houses which are a well known feature of this area.

It was now time to return to the British museum again as we had ‘unfinished business’.
A brisk walk to the Tube station (partly in order to stay warm) saw us arriving at the Museum around 10.30am. There was no queue and we quickly picked up where we had left off yesterday. About 2.5 hours of solid work and photography got us to the point in the book where we finally read the words ‘You have now completed your tour of the Museum’. The only disappointment was that 2 rooms that we wished to inspect were closed due to staffing shortages. We tried to convince / coax/ bribe one of the staff members to allow us in - but alas we will have to get someone else to inspect and take the photos in these rooms for us another time.

We had a 20 minute lunch break in The Great Court area before heading to our next activity - a trip down one of London’s canals in a canal ‘narrowboat’. The boat departed Little Venice at 2.30pm and we were cutting it fine. Another brisk 15 minute walk, followed by an unseemly sprint at the finish to catch the required bus - then another jog after we got off the bus - saw us arriving with minutes to spare at the dock at Little Venice.
We probably would never normally have thought to book this trip, but it was an inclusion on the London Pass we had been using to gain ‘free’ access to all the things we had done so far (bar the Churchill museum and the London Eye).
The 45 minute trip up this London canal was surprisingly enjoyable and the expert commentary was very informative. The history and importance of the extensive network of canals through England was relatively unknown to us both.

Well, there was no delaying it any longer - it was time to man-up and head to Harrods. As we exited Knightsbridge underground I could barely keep up with Loss as she fairly sprinted in the direction the signs were leading her.

There were 3 areas she was particularly interested in inspecting - the food hall, the children’s toys and clothing section, and the shoe department. All of these filled me with fear and dread.

We eventually emerged from Harrods’ clutches with the final damage not as bad as I had feared. Some grandchildren’s gifts were purchased, but fortunately I was eventually successful in convincing her that the Louis Vuitton shoes that she had homed in on didn’t look that good on her . . .🤫

A tube ride back to Russell Square had us walking through the door just after 6pm - our last day of exploring London. It has been really enjoyable and busy and the weather was very kind to us overall.

Tomorrow we plan to pick up a a rental car to use for touring the rest of the UK during the coming weeks.

    • Day 13

      First full day in London

      September 11, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

It’s now Thursday morning, but it was too late to write up then. Having had a LONG sleep on Tuesday night, we felt ready to hit the town...but actually, I have to say that I did feel a bit fuzzy despite plenty of sleep. But we did quite a lot. After breakfast, which is included in our accommodation this time, we set off, walked through Hyde Park, saw there was a September 11 memorial, which was ignored even though it was today sept. 11. Nearby there was a butterfly biosphere...a tent with many species of butterflies in a very tropical tent, so we went in just for fun.

Then we walked along, through Mayfair towards the British Museum where we spent a few hours looking at the fascinating things there. After we wandered the streets, such lovely buildings (mostly) and in passing picked up our tickets for Mamma Mia from the Novello theatre in Aldwych, (that is for Friday) and also for the concert tonight (Thursday) from St Martin in the Fields in Trafalgar Square.

After more wandering we actually took the underground to Knightsbridge - getting a little wearier by then - and walked to South Kensington, lots of eateries there...had a pre dinner drink at happy hour, then a pizza and salad before walking to the Royal Albert Hall for our Proms concert. Realised we were joining quite a crowd walking in the same direction...there is a real atmosphere at the prom concerts. Found our seats and enjoyed the whole spectacle. Virtually full house, with always people standing in the middle . We thought it was a concert of Bach orchestral suites - it was, but unbeknown to us there were other very short non-Bach 21st century works interspersed....(they can never have a concert there days without something new and “enlightening” it seems!)...however, this did not detract from the Bach...just lovely. It was an orchestra from Dunedin NZ (their equivalent ACO i imagine)...

So we walked back after the concert, and decided to have our complimentary drink in the bar at the hotel (because we are such faithful silver Accor members!)...so it was almost midnight when we went to bed, and of course, having been fighting sleep during the soothing Bach at the concert, we found ourselves wide awake....

So here we are, Thursday morning, slept in till almost 9, ready for a new day!

    • It’s good to be back! 🇬🇧🥰

      June 13, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

A tiring travel 🧭 day is instantly cured by three simple words:

      MIND THE GAP ❤️🤍💙

Staying in Kensington the next couple of days: About 200m from Kensington Palace. Dumped the bag at the Seraphine Olympia on Kensington High Street & headed straight to the “Goat 🐐 Tavern”. It’s the oldest pub in Kensington. It was built in 1695 as an ale house to raise money for education and support for the poor. Love the history! Over 300 years old. Amazing 🍺🍺 But no good to me at the time because stopped serving food so had a pint of cider 🍏 and kept exploring for something to eat after 12 hours travel 🧭😳 Then again…you sorta get beyond food after a certain threshold of tired…maybe another cider 🍺😇😝😝😝

Hopefully 🙏 Richard has successfully navigated his EasyJet flight ✈️ to Belfast! He will be wrecked after his extended journey! 😳✊🏻🧳

Strolled across to Kensington Palace just before sunset. I think it’s the first time I have ever come to the palace at night. It is very reflective for me, I always remember in 1997 (25 years ago 😳) when I came and saw the mountain of flowers 💐 and tributes that extended right through the gardens after Diana died… It was something I have never seen before and probably not again. It was as high as me & as far as you could see to the gates. We all remember where we were when Diana died. It is one of those moments in history that most of us will never forget. What a sad sad loss with repercussions that have lasted a lifetime, especially for William & Harry.

Saw an absolutely amazing full moon 🌕 across the gardens. It was very eerie but beautiful to see. Check out the photos; I couldn’t believe my luck. Photos cannot even capture how amazing and beautiful it is! 🌝 Probably gone a bit ‘Moonstruck’ but it’s just so awesome! I tried to get all ‘Arty farty’ and show Queen Vicki is being bathed in the light of the moon! This holiday is the gift 💝 that just keeps on giving! 😍😇👑

Looking forward to coming back to Kensington Palace during the day for the unique exhibition exploring the royal family‘s relationship with the camera: “life through a royal lens!” 👑

Nice to be in a different area of London the next couple of days. Thinking 🤔 of going to see King Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace tomorrow…

Need sleep 😴…always strange to know that when I hit the hay 🛌 everyone back home is just getting up to start ‘tomorrow’

      😘

      Kensington Gardens

      August 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Kensington Gardens, once the private gardens of Kensington Palace, are among the Royal Parks of London. The gardens are shared by the City of Westminster and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and sit immediately to the west of Hyde Park, in western central London. The gardens cover an area of 107 hectares.

The open spaces of Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park, and St. James's Park together form an almost continuous "green lung" in the heart of London. Kensington Gardens are Grade I listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

Staying in Shepherd's Bush to spend time with Matt & Bo in and around their new apartment in the redeveloped iconic BBC Television Centre at Wood Lane.

Hyde Park London - Alles flach oder was?

      August 28, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Read more
