      Sightseeing in London

      August 29, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      London Town

      July 31, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

First day out in the big smoke. The tube was hot, the legs are sore…loved it. Started with a walk around the standard spots: Southbank, Parliament, Downing St, Trafalgar, Piccadilly, Horse Guards, The Mall, Westminster. Explored the Natural History Museum though with some rain and with school holidays it got very busy. The Pliosaur, and the minerals a highlight for me (H). We had our first British pint in South Ken; a Brixton Lager and one “Level Head Session IPA” an ode to St Edmund beheaded by Vikings in 869 (and miraculously re-joined to his body hence the sainthood); appreciated the design for both flavour and the pint glass. Lunch was a cash only buffet in Chinatown, a rushed choice after getting a little too hangry (H again)…we attempted to use old £ notes Mum and Dad gave us from their last trip, but was not accepted hehe. A trip to the bank will be next. Thank goodness for Issy and Livvy who navigated, had extra cash and generally were lovely tour guides!Read more

      St. James’s Park

      February 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

After strolling through the bustling city it was time for a little break in one of London‘s many green little oases - St. James’s Park. 🌳 Located right behind the Buckingham Palace, it’s an amazing spot to just lay back and relax for a bit. As always there were lots of squirrels out and about, so I convinced myself to leave the park to walk the 15 minutes to the nearest Tesco after all so I could purchase some peanuts. 🥜 And what should I say? It was absolutely worth it. I was hunted by lots of different birds 🐦 and especially the geese 🪿 were quite eager to tear the bag of peanuts out of my hands, but the adorable little squirrels 🐿️ who from time to time even dared to eat the nuts right out of my hands made it worth while haha.Read more

      St Jame's Park

      August 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

St James's Park is a 23-hectare (57-acre) urban park in the City of Westminster, central London. A Royal Park, it is at the southernmost end of the St James's area, which was named after a once isolated medieval hospital dedicated to St James the Less, now the site of St James's Palace. The area was initially enclosed for a deer park near the Palace of Whitehall for King Henry VIII in the 1530's. It is the most easterly of a near-continuous chain of parks that includes (moving westward) Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens.

      So beautiful.

      London Day 4

      August 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Soo I texted Julia to hang out again today because it really broke my heart to think that I’d never see her again!! So I had planned to do a bunch of touristy London things which is funny bc she’s a local. So we went early to Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guards or something. But I was so confused because it was actually SOOOO busy and packed but I didn’t see the guards change anywhere. I saw the dudes in the big black fluffy hats parade and play music but that’s kind of it. We were trying to look for the ceremony but it was just so busy everywhere, that I couldn’t even tell where it was happening. So we gave up after a while, and decided to just sit and chat in the park. We talked about the cute animals that roamed the park 😇. Then we walked around and saw Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and then walked along the other side of South Bank for a bit. We grabbed some hoisin duck wraps from Pret-a-Manger and then took the metro to Brick Lane. Our time here was short, but I was wanting to meet up and see Benita- one of my roommates and friends from Amsterdam. We just went into the vintage market area of Brick Lane because that’s all I had time for :( the area was super cool and had like graffiti and stuff. After, me and Julia headed back to the metro, where I had to say yet another very sad and very tearful goodbye. It’s the same thing, where I really don’t know when I’ll see her again :( and that’s what makes this so difficult. But, I’m no stranger to goodbyes at this point.
And so, on to the last chapter of my trip- PARIS!! I hopped on the Eurostar and made my way to the city of love. Slept through the whole ride, and made it at night. I went to grab some asian food for dinner and then metro’d over to my hostel. Embarrassingly, I bought only a zone 1 ticket, but I needed 2 zones because I didn’t realize that my hostel is just outside of the city of Paris. So then the gate wouldn’t open to let me exit, and I was like trying to crawl under the gate, but I was actually stuck because I had my huge backpack on. And it was just a really embarrassing picture, if you can picture it 😅😅😅 but someone helped me open the gate and get through🤣

      St. James's Park

      November 23, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

      Wildlife🐿️

      December 5, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Read more

      Churchill's War Room

      August 20 in England ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

While Lyn went looking at shops Paul visited Churchill's War Room. These are the bunkers around the corner from Downing St that Churchill, military and Parliament planned and oversaw WW2.

Incredibly fascinating to think of the ramifications of the discussions and decisions made inside these rooms.Read more

      April 9 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Steven: We left for Chelsworth on the 7th of April to stay with my auntie Rebecca and uncle David. They live along a small village road in Suffolk surrounded by fields, sheep and birds.

We also visited Manningtree, where I used to live with my sister Jules, sometime during COVID. We had lunch at The Crown, where I used to work (very expensive...too close to London!). We then walked along the Stour (the local river), following the Dedham Vale trail. I had last walked this route with my mom when the family lived in Brantham - also nearby - and distinctly recall being harassed by bugs for much of it. It wasn't so bad this time.

The trail ends near the Boatyard, a riverside restaurant near where my grandparents ashes had been scattered. Heavy rains meant the pastures had flooded so ended up taking a detour through some sheepfolds.

A highlight of the weekend was seeing Rodrigo again. He wasn't wearing his little jumper this time, but he was still loud.

Because we were leaving from Stansted, Jules and her boyfriend Conor, who live in Chelmsford, came to have dinner and taxi us south so we could get an early bus to the airport.

      Buckingham Palace (sort of)

      September 16 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Buckingham Palace is open to the public during the summer and the tour is sooooo worth it. I even go to see the original portrait of Charles III, and I am slowly learning to like it. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and they tell the story of British royalty.

Sadly, no pictures inside, so enjoy the little bits I managed to get
