      Rule Britannia

      Winchester Wander

      11 de agosto de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After a late start to the day, trip planning for the September trip to the Faroe Islands, we decided to explore Winchester. We had been warned to avoid the train station area due to the Boomtown music festival happening nearby.

A 25 minute drive found us to the multi-storey parkade, just east of High Street. We were quick to leave the parkade due to a blaring car alarm that its owner couldn't quiet 😭...

We wandered into a park where the local council hosts "Fabulous Family Friday's". The park was set up with various children activities, and the weather was perfect for outdoor fun.

Eventually we exited Abbey Gardens park and found our way to the Cathedral rear access. It was very tranquil in the passage through the Watergate access. As with most of the old English Cathedrals, the grandiose architecture and engineering is always stunning and impressive.

After walking around the Cathedral grounds, we found our way to the old castle grounds, and remaining Great Hall and West Gate structures. The Castle that had been built in 11th Century after the Norman conquest, and later upgraded in 13th century, but was mostly reduced to rubble during the English Civil War in the 17th century. The rest of the grounds has various aged buildings used by the Winchester City Administration, with the newest buildings being the Law Courts.

Although the kingdom administraton moved to London in the 11th century, Winchester still played an important role in legal affairs and the treasury till the 13th century.

We finished our tour of Winchester with a wander down the famous High Street, which hosts a street market four days a week.

Once back at the house, A fired up the BBQ and we feasted on steak and veggies outside. It was an enjoyable warm evening on the patio.

      Becoming Jane

      Day 23 Southampton - London

      24 de agosto de 2019, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Off the ship for the final time this morning about 8 am. We arranged to get a cab to the rail station with a couple of friends we made on the ship and disembarking was so easy we were off the ship and at the station within 25 minutes which meant over an hour’s wait for our 9.30 train to Waterloo station in London.

That all went smoothly enough and we arrived about 11.15 and picked up a black taxi to our hotel/apartment in South Kensington. You know how Londons cabbies used to do “the knowledge” (which was a test that meant they had to memorise every street and the quickest direction to it in central London)? Our cabbie was obviously a complete failure at the knowledge as after 40 minutes in his taxi we were further away from where we wanted to be than when we started.

We had done this trip a few times before so I knew he was completely lost and following a few increasingly heated exchanges we parted ways, settling on a ten pound (out of the 45 on the meter) as fair exchange for his uselessness. I imagine he can still hear the very colourful language I used as I left the cab and hopefully my parting advice to him about choosing a different career path comes to fruition.

Anyway ten minutes and one driver who did actually know his way around later, we were at the Collingham apartments. We have stayed here about 4 times previously and they really look after us. We have been given a split level balcony apartment and there was a bottle of wine and chocolates awaiting us on arrival.

London has a reputation for cool cloudy weather, well not today! Almost 30 degrees with more just like it forecast for the next few days. It was a very hot and sweaty journey by tube out to Camden Town Markets for the afternoon where we were met by every other person in London who also wanted to be there on a Saturday afternoon - jeez it was packed!

Made a few purchases and made our way back to Kensington about 4 pm. After a quick stop at one of the local pubs and a bit of supermarket shopping we decided to call a halt to the day about 6 pm.

I had intended to get to a local football match (probably QPR) but the time it took to get to our apartment and the crowds at Camden Town put paid to that. A quiet night in cooking for ourselves in preparation for another day in the London heat tomorrow.

Photos show... The Collingham Apartments; several shots of the inside and balcony of room 122...

      Southampton

      Day 7 - Southampton - departure…or is it

      19 de octubre de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

well…we did not depart first thing this morning as expected. Weather is still bad and the harbor was still closed. Finally did leave around noon but, unfortunately, the weather played havoc at our first stop, Hamburg, and they’ve cancelled that port. Apparently the storm has pulled the water out of the river and it’s too shallow for the ship to dock. Spent the day eating, wandering around the ship, drinking, ping pong, I took merengue lessons (sans Paul, but I found myself another partner), we won a trivia contest, more to eat, more to drink…I rediscovered mojitos 😋. Our drink package allows us a maximum of 15 drinks per day. Paul’s favorite quote from the cruise director…”15 is a goal, not a limit” 🤣. Sometime during the day the Captain came on the PA to tell us of further changes to the itinerary - Mother Nature simply is not cooperating, but it looks like we’ve traded a day in Hamburg and a day in Aarhus (Denmark) for a port that I think is reasonably close to Amsterdam and if that’s the case and we can get into Amsterdam, I’m stoked!!Leer más

      Day 18 - Southampton, England

      30 de octubre de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Southampton today and a sad farewell to Wayne and Karin who are heading home to Newmarket. Busy day on board with staff prepping the ship for the onslaught of new passengers…our steward, Anshul, looked a bit overwhelmed - it looked like we were the only cabin in his row that were staying for the second half of the cruise so he had a lot of work to do. Hopped off the ship and headed into town. We walked by the Mayflower memorial, a memorial to the 1620 pilgrim ships that headed to America. Then we made our way to the Solent Sky as it had been highly recommended by our Aussie friends. It’s a museum dedicated to the history of flying boats and the Spitfire, housing over 20 aircraft from the golden age of aviation. The Solent region was the centre of aviation research and development between 1910 and 1960. Paul enjoyed it, but only managed to take one picture, and had some interesting discussions with one of the volunteers who was impressed with Paul’s knowledge of the airplanes, particularly the engines. We headed back towards the city centre, passing the Church of the Holyrood (known as the church of the sailors) which was erected in 1320, but damaged significantly in 1940. We continued along Blue Anchor Lane, alongside the Tudor house, that in Medieval times, was used to bring up imported goods to the market place and then down by the Southampton town walls. It had been raining on and off all morning so we ducked into the West Quay shopping mall (check out the vending machine for fresh flower arrangements), continuing with my quest to locate one of my favs, The Flying Tiger (glorified Dollar Store) which, I might add, we’ve been successful with in every port so far, except LeHavre. Jacqui, my craftaholic on board, found it today too (I had brought back Santa tissues for the ladies a couple of days ago) and LOVED it…her husband, Malcolm, was less impressed. Stopped in for lunch at Franco Manca where they make their own sourdough pizza crust and source their ingredients from small suppliers across Italy and the UK. Paul ordered a “No Logo Lager” - bit spicy (the pizza, not the Lager), but delicious 😋. Heading back to the ship we popped into Ikea to get out of the rain…same shit, different continent and then into McD’s for a coffee. Dinner and a show (comedian) and then off to bed.Leer más

Back to Southampton and Queen Mary 2

      18 de mayo de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Our car arrived at the hotel to take us to Southampton. Check-in was quick and easy- except for the part where I got escorted by security for a bag check. It seems I had my Leatherman in my bathroom bag- one never knows when a pliers will come in handy. The blade was within limits, and didn't lock, so the little old lady was deemed not a threat.Leer más

      Southampton

      19 de noviembre de 2023, Inglaterra ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Left home at 9am and arrived at the port at 11.15am. There was a lot of queueing and checking in before we could board but everyone was very friendly. By 12.45pm we were up on the Lido deck (8) drinking coffee. Completed the check in by watching the safety video and reporting to my muster station. Unpacked and explored the ship. Met Jenny Grey and Tom , they had already been on board for 3 weeks. Went to the welcome session in the gym. met Marilyn at our dinner table.
Watched the Bollette Theatre Company doing Wizard of Oz musical.
