      Lake Cleveland

      August 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

      Changing the Dream

      July 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

Well, it has been a rough few days. We have done nothing but drive and mood swing. Years of dreams and planning were tossed in the trash when I, totally out of the blue, announced I would not deal with the humidity. Surprise to me…absolutely crushing to him. The economic gains the southern states could afford us would allow us a much more fluid lifestyle. Extensive travel and further investments were taken off the table by heading back west.

So needless to say, the heavy guilt I will carry for years to come had me either crying or VERY defensive! John was not outright blaming me, but I was finding it in everything he said or did. Plus…since I destroyed our master plan, we had no idea how to start over. We didn’t even know where we were headed. It did not make for a pleasant drive! I’m pretty sure we got divorced somewhere between Laramie & Soda Springs, WY!

Thankfully, John brought it back home. When we stopped for the night he grabbed me with a huge hug and said, “We need to make this about us, Wherever we end up, we’ll be fine because we’re together.” (Which of course turned me into a blubbering idiot…again!)

So after a much more cheery drive today, we are staying overnight in Burley, ID. We are at a harvest host location that is on the banks of the Snake River. Very pretty view. We enjoyed drinks and a steak dinner. Not a bad day. We will figure out what we are doing tomorrow, tomorrow.

** FYI: When we saw the gas prices steadily going up as we headed west, John started creating a Go Fund Me page. 😉

      Minidoka National Historic Site

      June 24, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 84 °F

On the way to Craters of the Moon we happened across this rather unusual site and decided to check it out. Minidoka National Historic Site (https://www.nps.gov/miin/index.htm) is the site of one of 10 'Japanese Internment Camps' that were used to detain thousands of Japanese Americans during WW II.

The visitor center was closed but there are lots of signs on the trail through the area. The details of the treatment the detainees received during and after the war was difficult to learn about but I am glad we stopped. I learned a lot.

The thing that bothered me the most is realizing how many people would have supported doing it again after 9/11 to all Muslims.

      Back down I84

      March 28, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 6 °C

We left Portland, again, two days ago after a nice hot shower. We are again headed east on I84 and starting to get very familiar with this stretch of interstate.

Coming through Pendelton was lovley yeaterday morning. The mountains seemed to be wearing belts made of clouds and the mist sat heavily over the valleys. We stopped at a viewpoint in the Blue Mountains for lunch. The camera on this phone does no justice to landscape photos.

We woke this morning to a sunny but breezy 40°f in Jerome, ID. I really do enjoy being on open ground. One can see the storms far off. Kind of like when we lived on Kwaj and could watch it raining over the open ocean. But, this time I am watching it rain over grass lands and distant mountains.

I like this app. It is neat to track where we've been. In 5th and 6th grade I had a caribou tracking project. We would receive occasional emails with coordinates of a particular herd of caribou. My job was to find the coordinates in the map and place a pin in order to watch the herd's movements. Now we have apps that do it for us! And, instead of caribou, I am tracking us.

We are headed to Brigham City, UT where we will have our mandatory 34 hours of downtime. The upside of this location is that we will be parked at headquarters. Laundry and showers are free in the driver's lounge. Woohoo!

      July 4-12

      July 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Last Wednesday my sister, Marcia, and I took a road trip to Twin Falls Idaho to attend the 2023 Minidoka Pilgrimage. Minidoka was an American concentration camp where up to 13,000 Japanese Americans were denied their civil rights and were incarcerated during World War 2. https://www.nps.gov/miin/index.htm
The first stop on our journey was lunch in Goldendale, WA. We continued east with stops in Baker City, overnight in Ontario, then on to Boise before reaching Twin Falls.
The Pilgrimage kicked off with a social and dinner at Koto Brewing Company. https://koto.beer/
We connected with our relatives from Texas, my Auntie Toku, cousins and theirs spouses and kids. Twelve Texans in all ranging in age from 1 to 91!
Opening ceremony was at the College of Southern Idaho followed by a full day of enlightening educational seminars.
Saturday morning we took a bus to Minidoka National Historic Site where we went to the Visitors Center then had a walking tour of the site guided by the NPS. It was quite moving walking where my grandparents, mother, aunts, uncles and older cousins trod 80 years ago. We returned to the college for an afternoon of small group Intergernerational Legacy Sessions. My session was informative, bonding and surprisingly (to me) emotional and cathartic. I guess generational trauma is a real thing. Later that evening we headed to the Fairfield Inn for cocktails, karaoke and dancing (imagine line dancing to Uptown Funk by a 90+ year old) and Japanese Bon Odori.
The closing ceremony was held at Minidoka with speeches given by various leaders of the JA community, National Park Service and Crow Nation. It was touching witnessing the survivors take part in the Native American sage smudging ceremony.
As always I was proud to locate my father's name on the Honor Roll where the names of JA soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and Military Intelligence Service fought for and served their country while their loved ones were incarcerated. https://goforbroke.org/history/unit-history/442…
We visited Shoshone Falls before starting our long drive home.
Thank you to the Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee, Friends of Minidoka https://www.minidoka.org/ and National Parks Service for a fantastic experience. Thank you Marcia for driving.
Today we're bound for a 12 night stay at Neskowin Creek RV Park on the central Oregon Coast.

      Driving Day #2

      August 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The first stop of the day for road construction. Yippee! As a bonus, we got to pass over the Snake River Canyon which was SPECTACULAR.
