      Ride along the Highway

      September 16, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we got up quite tired since the whole night something was rustling around our tent. While packing our gear we noticed some little holes in the ground sheet of our tent and in our towel. A little bastard mouse had fun nibble our gear 😬
The ride to Wenatchee was a long ride along a very busy highway although we already took the quiet alternativ route.
Arriving in Wenatchee we went to the post office were we received a letter from Meike's parents. As I forgot the National Park entry pass back in germany, which was a gift from Tobi, Meike's parents sent it to the US post office.
Peg and Rod, our warm showers hosts for this night, served a very delicious dinner (spareribs with a very tasty rice salat) so we could refill our calorie storage to be prepared for the next pass. I ate at least 5000kcal 😁

      Campingausflug Teil 2

      September 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Washington Pass challenge

      September 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

After another rainy night we startet our climb to Washington Pass. On the way to the top we had a short stop at rainy lake, were luckily it wasn't raining. It took us 5h30min and around 1800m of climbing to reach the pass.
After another 2h downhill riding we reached Winthrop were we found a were nice warm showers. The couple (Carolyn and Tom) who we stayed with was absolutely amazing, prepared a tasty dinner for us and let us wash our clothes. You can imagine how the clothes smelled after 5 days of bike riding with lots of rain and a humidity of nearly 100 % 🙄
Winthrop spreads a bit of cowboy feeling since there are lots of western town buildings. So we might change our bicycles into horses. 🐎

      Wenatchee to Seattle, Wenatchee, WA

      June 30, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Hi all sorry a couple of big days and no time to blog, trying to Catch up tonight.
A reasonable early start to the day from Bonners Ferry, the plan for the day was to get to Wenatchee. We had a really restful night and a great breakfast at a diner just down the road. We expected the drive to not hold to much in terms of views or landmarks and that is just what we got.
The countryside quickly changed from the pine laden hills of the Idaho panhandle as we moved South West towards Spokane. Ahh… Spokane where we planned to have a look around, we found on arrival that they were having an event called Hoop Fest and the city streets were diverted. We attempted to find a lookout but no good on that score as well. We paid Spokane off as a bad joke and it was chewing up time, so we continued, that said what we did see indicated that it is a lovely place.
From Spokane, we continued west through miles and miles and miles and did I say miles of wheat fields with very little change. The scenery changed briefly when we hit a huge expanse of water and Coulee Dam, and just after a large gorge where two tectonic plates meet. We went through many small towns all seemingly a day’s ride from each other.
One standout was Waterville where we stopped by chance and saw a museum. This museum was on of the best that we have seen with rock displays, pioneering displays, a 45 star 1900 US flag, farming implements and more. Finally, we reached the Wenatchee River and its abundant stone fruit crops. Cherries, Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, Apricots. We stopped and picked up a punnett of the best cherries I have ever eaten.
The accommodation was scarce, and we learned that there was a state baseball championship being held. The rooms that were available were very pricey. We drove back to East Wenatchee and same applied. A decision was made to continue, but we also new that the fact that it is summer holiday we had moved into an alpine region again and the July 4 holiday might conspire against us. It did we checked hotels in Cashmere, Leavenworth, Coles Corner, Skyomish, Gold Bar and Sultan. Even Monroe had nothing. All of this meant that we had driven through what was our Saturday plan Stevens Pass. Stevens Pass was amazing again following a fast-moving river and climbing through this alpine region. The town of Leavenworth is named with all Bavarian and Swiss chalets and resorts.
We stopped at Monroe to regroup all feeling shattered from a long day, we ate at a diner and checked the accommodation situation. Our decision was to push on into Seattle rather than to stop on the outskirts. And so, it was that we navigated in failing light into Washington states largest city, with being in Seattle a night early we formulated a new plan and turned in for the night.

      Day Ten: Mica Lake

      July 24, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

19.4 miles. Today was one of the hardest days of the PCT so far. Started out with tons of massive blowdowns that were difficult and exhausting to get over. Then the trail switched to long difficult snow fields then to overgrown vegetation with switchbacks in the blazing sun where the edge of the trail dropped straight down and you couldn’t see rocks or the trail below you for most of the way. The trail then came back to snow with a stream crossing. It wasn’t too difficult but Side Quest and I were too short to make the leap across the rocks to keep our feet dry so we ended up fording the short distance. After, I changed into my last pair of dry socks for the day but they too got wet and freezing cold from my wet shoes and it was an extremely difficult last 2 miles up to the campsite.

We heard a week ago there was still snow up at Mica Lake, where we planned to camp, but we had hoped the snow would be somewhat melted by then. Sadly not. The only options were to camp in the snow, hike back down the grueling trail 6 miles to the previous campsite and do it all again in the morning, or press on at least another 5 miles over the pass we heard would be the most difficult given the current weather conditions. We decided to stay in the snow, which ended up not being as cold as I thought and made for some gorgeous views but it was a rough night trying to get my feet back to normal temperature.

      Day Nine: Suiattle River

      July 23, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

21.77 miles. Rough up hill climb this morning in the sun then long downhill hike after lunch. Lots of trail with vegetation then switched to huge boulders, then into the woods then to camp next to the roaring Suiattle River with Fish (Seattle), Jeff (Seattle), Sniff, Rudy, Side Quest and Safety. We also ran into the crew sawing away at all the blowdowns with their 75lb packs. It’s incredible the work that they do to keep the Trails maintained.Read more

      Chelan, Washington

      May 22, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Day Eleven: Firecreek Pass

      July 25, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

15.8 miles. Went up Firecreek Pass with Sniff, Rudy, Jeff, Fish, Side Quest and Safety. The pass was much steeper than the pictures make it out to be. Another rough day with lots of uphill climbing in the scorching sun. We were all pretty beat and couldn’t quite put in the full miles we had anticipated for that day but found a beautiful spot to pitch our tents. Gorgeous sunset looking out at Glacier.Read more

Stevens Pass and Leavenworth Zero Day

      July 29, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 40 °C

Got to spend a few wonderful zero days in town at Stevens Pass and Leavenworth! Huge thank yous to my mom, Stephanie and Kathy for being the best Trail Angels on the PCT and letting me recover in style and pampering me endlessly. My feet were horribly swollen and legs looking a little beat up but ready to get back on trail after some rest and good food.Read more
