    North Pole Resorts

May 18 in the United States

It's time for our annual May long weekend camping trip with Ed and Sandy! Reservations are at North Pole Resorts in Wilmington, New York. The weather forecast isn't great, but that's okay!

We leave Cornwall at 10 and drop Belle off at Gail and Bob 's. It's cool, but sunny and warm in the Rialta. No problems at the border and a smooth drive all the way.

North Pole Campground in Wilmington, NY

May 20 in the United States

I am a little late starting my story of our trip to Lake Placid. We left ottawa Friday, it was a beautiful sunny day. Saturday, Kathy and Tony drove us into Lake Placid. On our way we visited John Brown's homestead, the olympic aerial ski jump site, the White Face ski hill and then we did some shopping in the town of Lake Placid. Today, Sunday, is a cool day. We walked to the chocolate store and visited a popular fly fishing spot on the Ausable river.
This is our first trip of the season. We got the camper from the cottage last weekend and had a short week to get it ready to go. There were a few signs of mice and we searched diligently for a nest with no luck. Saturday evening while entertaining Kathy and Tony over dinner, our little whiskered friend showed herself. We didn't catch her but we did find her nest and young family. So New York now has a family of illegal aliens!

    Miniroadtrip Tag 1

April 6 in the United States

September 4, 2017 in the United States

North Pole Resorts, Saturday, April 19

May 20 in the United States

4 Rialtariders today! We leave the campground around 11:00 and drive to High Falls Gorge. It is $12.00 each to walk the trail, so we decide to move on! We drive to Whiteface Mountain and take some photos. There is still a bit of snow on the trails!

We drive to the ski jump sites used during the 1980 Olympics. These are now used for training and various events. The elevator to the top of the jump will open next weekend, so we move on, but not before we marvel at the height and steepness of these jumps!

We visit The John Brown Farm, a State Historic Site . A very knowledgeable guide tells us about John Brown's life. He was active in the abolitionist movement 16 months before the Civil,War began, in 1849, he bought 250 acres of land in this area and set up a farm. He had 2 wives and 18 children! He was away from home much of the time, working with the abolitionists. In October, 1859, he attempted to incite a slave riot by attacking the US Arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, and was arrested. He was hanged on December 2. His body now rests on his farm. The guide explained that this event was like a tree which has blown over. The leaves are still intact, the tree is still alive, but the roots have been exposed, and the tree is now vulnerable. So it was with slavery. It still existed, but John Brown and his men had exposed its roots, making it vulnerable to change.

We drive to Lake Placid and have lunch at The Farmhouse Cafe. . .good food and reasonable prices! Then, we shop till we drop! There are lots of stores along the Main Street! I buy myself a new outfit for golf! Surprise!

We return to the campground and Sandy and Ed make dinner for us. . .lentil tacos and salmon burgers! Feeling spoiled! But the best is yet to come

Es soll ja tatsächlich noch Berglöwen geben, in den Adirondacks...

    Lake Placid

August 16, 2016 in the United States

After Albany, the rain continued with vengeance and as we entered the Adirondacks the temperature dropped below 20 for the first time since we arrived. Driving through the Adirondacks was unbelievable though, and as the rain eased it was warm enough that it rose off the trees, creating a beautiful scenic drive. Sadly the high ropes course we had hoped to go on had sent out their last group by the time we arrived, so we carried on driving reaching over 2000ft above sea level. We spent the evening wandering around mirror lake and enjoying the comforts of our hotel, whilst planning how to make the most of tomorrow...and enjoying a few beers ☺Read more

    Me and my big mouth

August 17, 2016 in the United States

So on the way back from Rocky Falls, we debated what to do next. We passed signs for the Mt. Jo trail, a 'short trail' of 2 miles round trip to the summit and spectacular views and I suggested that'd be a good idea with the sun now out. While it was short, it was short because it went straight up the mountain...and 'trail' was a somewhat loose description of vertical bouldering! Me and my big mouth. However the summit was spectacular and we managed the return route in under 2 hours despite being clearly the least prepared for the climb compared to others at the summit! We returned down the rocky path without breaking anything before returning pathetically weary to the car after five hours of hiking.Read more

    Rocky Falls

August 17, 2016 in the United States

An early Adirondack start to do some hiking, alas the weather was against us on a grizzly damp morning. We perservered and aimed for the 5 mile Rocky Falls hike. The 'rocky' part was spot on, the route being littered with them, but it was a very scenic walk through one trail of the 6 million acres of forest here. The paths were damp and muddy but the end of the trail made it worth it - absolutely stunning waterfalls. Having mis-stepped and already got one foot wet, I had a very enjoyable splodge in the water 😊 As we walked back, the sun broke through the grey sky.Read more
