      Around Brooks Camp

      22 juni 2023, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

After a pretty good night’s sleep (except for the rain), we got up and had the first shower in 2 days. I don’t think I’ve ever walked so far for a shower, past so much bear poop before 😬.

After breakfast we walked to the falls platform and sat for a while watching for bears. After an hour or so we returned to the ranger station without seeing any but the sun was out and drying my shoes.

We had lunch at the ranger station picnic area and then back to the campground for a little afternoon nap.

We then went to the lodge to charge some devices and have a cuppa. We walked out onto the bridge and down the peninsula with the barge. The mosquitoes were pretty bad so we worked our way back towards the lodge. We saw a group of people on the beach and went to see which bear they were looking at, 901 and her cubs.

We then went to the lodge for a beer before returning to the campground for macaroni cheese for dinner.

After dinner we went to the beach and watched 90/ and her cubs again before bed. The cubs were cavorting and playing, which was great to watch.

      Anchorage to Brooks Camp

      20 juni 2023, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

A really early start, the alarm going off at 3.45am. We packed everything into the car and drove to the airport. We returned the rental car and then checked in for our Aleutian Airways flight to King

We then found the baggage storage and left our spare things

The flight to King Salmon took about an hour. When we arrived, we were met by a Katmai Air representative who transferred us to the float plane depot. We checked in again, including being weighed for the second time today, and after a short wait we boarded the float plane. The flight from King Salmon to Brooks camp was about 20 minutes.

We landed and clambered out of the plane onto the beach. We were sent straight to bear school, where we watched a video about how to behave around the bears.

We then checked in for our campsite and went to put up the tent. Once everything was sorted, we walked to the falls platform and looked at the view. Suddenly a female m, 909, and 2 cubs appeared on the opposite bank. They looked around for a while and the climbed down the bank and crossed the river, swimming right towards us. They came and ate grass right under the platform where we were standing and we watched them until they walked off into the bush.

We then went back to the campground and had noodles for lunch.

After lunch we sat and watched the fishermen for a while and then went into the lodge to avoid the light rain.

We spent the rest of the evening relaxing at the campground.

      Bear sighting 6

      23 juni 2023, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The top of a head and 2 blond fluffy ears waggling off into the woods. We continued down our path and stopped to watch the birds on the bridge and the bear popped out of the other side of the forest. It waded into the river and swam across, then climbed out onto the other side. We watched it walk and run across the marshes before it disappeared into the bush.Läs mer

Brooks Lodge - Der zweite Tag

Keinesfalls laufen. Und beruhigend auf ihn einreden. Gesagt - getan: "We are not your Breakfast". Ganz ruhig.

Kukak Bay - Katmai National Park

      30 juli 2022, Förenta staterna ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Heading for Kukak Bay in the Katmai National Park, we don’t arrive till late afternoon and the slot time for our excursion is not until 18:30 this evening. No landing today just a zodiac trip around the bay to look out for wildlife on the shore, the salmon are running which attracts animals for the food!
17 active volcanos in this park, the 1912 eruption of the Nova Erupta volcano was the largest in the last century, 30 times more powerful than Mount St Helen’s.
14:30, we have slowed and feels as if we are just drifting along the coast - presumably this is Kukak Bay (first picture). Everything looks grey with cloud touching the hills, but the shoreline is clear, the sea looks calm and no rain so I expect the conditions are ok for a trip.
Finally 18:30 and our time to go, the mist and drizzle are back, 2 minutes out and can no longer see the ship. Had to remove my glasses as they were too wet to see through. 5 minutes later the drizzle had stopped, we could see the ship again. I dried my glasses and put them back on. Two bears on the shoreline, the pilot drifted us in as close as possible to the first bear, then slowly moved back and further down the bay to the second bear, again drifted in as close as possible. Think you will probably just be able to see the bears in the pictures, clearer on the iPad. The plan was then to move carrots the bay to an island on the other side to view the birds, but part way across our pilot/guide spotted what he believed was an Ancient murrelet, ( was on maximum, but picture still very small). Back to ship, a small group of sea otters floated by on their backs whilst we ate a late dinner, we then slowly sailed out of the bay towards our next stop. Apparently not far estimated arrival time is our midnight.

Geographic/Kinak Bays - Katmai Nat Park

      31 juli 2022, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Breakfast at 07:00, we had table 61, right at the back of the restaurant with a window looking out from the stern of the ship. All we could see was mist the cliffs behind you can see in the photo were totally hidden. We were scheduled to be in the first group out at 08:30, but when we went to the boat deck at that time we were told they were delaying by 30 minutes to allow some of the mist to clear. We boarded the zodiac at 09:00, the mist had mostly cleared as we headed further into the harbour. Most amazing backdrop of mountains still with some snow, as we headed further into the bay small beaches began to appear. A bald eagle flew over the zodiac, sorry was too slow to get a photo, we carried on right to the end of the bay where there larger beaches and a grassy plain were to be found. Here were the bears, we probably saw about 10 in all, a mother and 2 largish cubs,a other and 3 cubs and several individuals on the shoreline. The bears were digging in the waters edge to find clams. Our pilot guide told us this was concerning as at this time of year there should have been salmon for the to feast on and he thought they were all much thinner than they should be at this time of year. On the way back a sea otter posed for some pictures. Back on the ship the mist has gone and is a bright sunny morning. Yesterday’s guide had warned us that Geographic Bay would be the highlight of the trip with its dramatic scenery and animal life, l don’t think he was wrong. We are fortunate, only a small ship like the Roald Amundsen and the small zodiacs can get you into this location as it is totally undisturbed wilderness. Onto Kinak Bay this afternoon where we have another zodiac outing.
The other bay we visited is the other side of the mountains you see in picture 1, so it only took about an hour after lunch to slowly cruise around the headland into Kinak Bay. But what a marked difference between the two, a strong wind and bigger swell ! But once across the bay and into the channel that took us deeper into the park it was all calm again. Down a narrow channel it eventually opened out into a small lake at the far end amongst the reeds and grasses a bear played hide and seek with us eventually showing enough of him or herself to get a photo. On the way in we noticed a seal swimming back towards the sea, we saw him/ her again on the way back enjoying a fish supper. Karen has photos but have already exhausted my quota of 10 today, so if interested Karen can send separately.

      A Russian heritage

      22 augusti 2019, Förenta staterna ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

The Alutiiq have been in this region for some 7,500 years. Their story is told in the Alutiiq Museum.
The Russians came in the late 1700's and set up this building in 1808 and set up a Magazin, the Russian word for store.
The US purchased Russia in 1867 and this building became the home of the manager of the Kodiak Trading Company.
In 1911, the Erskine family turned the building into their home.
In 1948, it was a rooming house.
In 1967, the City of Kodiak purchased. the building and opened the museum.
During the tsunami, of 1964, the waves reached up to the front porch of this building which is high above the waterfront.

Sea daze and rock and roll

      14 september 2023 ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

Lots to do on the Silver Muse on a sea day on this itinerary. There are classes for crafty people, dancing people, drinking people and thinking people and we are at least 3 of the four. Royce and I make bracelets today, we did line dancing last sea day, Mike and Kay Chee enjoy the cocktail making class and we listen to the port talks and history of the places we are traveling too. The entertainment is pretty good too thanks to our wonderful piano man Mark Ferris. We did experience a really awful comedian after a very nice dinner at Indochine. They change the menu every four days and I think I preferred the first menu but the lobster pad Thai was very yummy although not a pad Thai by any stretch of the imagination. And how can you be disappointed by lobster! Royce has succumbed to the really big seas and made it to the dinner table but left to go to bed. We did Bingo and Trivia and he started to look a bit woozy 🥴. I hope he’ll be ok today. He changed over his patch and maybe that was the problem. There is a lot of motion and you can really feel the difference in a smaller ship. It will be interesting when we hit the Bering Sea!Läs mer
