      Wochenendtrip nach Nashville

      October 14, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

An diesem Wochenende sind Esther und ich spontan nach Nashville gefahren. Was heißt spontan?

      Downtown Nashville
      - bicentennial Park
      - Parthenon
      - Wings: 302 11th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203
      - Bourbon street = Boulevard (we saw Lexi Lauren live)

      Sunday:
      - Church, Jewish messianic
      - Grand Ole Opry, 2804 Opryland Dr, Nashville, TN 37214
      - Music Valley— Gaylord Opryland Resort (a fun hotel)

      Tips:
      - Wildhorse Saloon: Linedancing
      - Scooter App: Lime
      - Angel Wings
      - blue birds cafe

    • Day 9

      Gatlinburg to Nashville

      October 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we had an early start, as we needed to return our rental car to Nashville airport by lunchtime. Fortunately we would be crossing a date line during our drive, meaning we would gain an hour too, giving us an hour sleep in! Our drive today was somewhat uneventful, particularly since we didn't get a chance to stop in Knoxville on the way. I was only really interested in getting a photo in front of the Sunsphere anyway, just to see if anyone could remember that memorable Simpsons episode.

Getting to the airport was near impossible, as there were whole sections of the freeway completely closed (no idea why). When we finally arrived we called for an Uber to drop us off at our accommodation. The neighbourhoods surrounding the airport weren't exactly the type you'd want to break down in, so it was good to see our accommodation was in a much more desirable area.

We are staying at a guesthouse that Ted found on the Mister B&B website. We arrived before we were able to check-in, so we asked if we could leave our bags in order to explore downtown. We again called for an Uber as downtown was not really walkable from our accommodation.

I'm not sure if I was missing something but to me, Nashville has no charm whatsoever. My impression was just a whole lot of people getting drunk in pubs playing the occasional country and western music, and the occasional beer-mobile going down the street. The town also wasn't that attractive, and lacked any of the character that makes New Orleans appealing. Maybe I just didn't get it. We walked down to the waterfront to have a look and again, it did nothing for me.

After getting lunch at the appropriately named Pita Pit, we went to the Country and Western Museum to see what it was like. Since neither of us are interested in C&W, paying a lot of money to look at displays we didn't understand seemed like a waste. We felt similar when seeing the Johnny Cash museum. One thing that interested us somewhat was the Goo Goo shop which is one of the early confectioners in Nashville.

We walked back to our accommodation in the now hot weather (shouldn't have worn jeans!) to meet the hosts of the accommodation. They also have a dog named Rex who immediately recognised us as dog lovers. We did some laundry and rested before getting ready to go to the Grand Ole Opry tonight. Since we've spent a bit of money to see the show, we didn't feel guilty about not seeing any of the museums today.

As it turned out, the drive to the Opry was awful. Our driver seemed to take forever to get there, meaning our plan to have a formal dinner first was replaced by having a fast food meal instead. Even though we were among the youngest visitors to the show and our tickets were in the back row, we still enjoyed it. Some of the entertainers were great and it did show the appeal of the C&W scene. I am glad we did this or our trip to Nashville may have been a complete disappointment.

We were keen to go out afterwards, so we called another Uber (almost impossible to find with all the people everywhere after the show!) and headed into a venue called Tribe. There was definitely a good, older crowd there and we managed to talk to a few of the locals. We probably didn't have the late night we'd expected, but it was still good to go out in the Country and Western capital of the United States!

      Nashville

      October 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After a slight sleep in today, we still had another day to explore Nashville. After having breakfast in the kitchen (coffee and cakes!) we walked towards the Gulch, which is more of an upscale neighbourhood of Nashville. On the way we passed through a farmer's market and one of the large parks, which made us grateful we are staying in the nicer part of the city.

The Gulch ended up being a really nice area with art galleries, restaurants and high-end pubs. We ended up staying for lunch at one of the pubs before catching (yet another) Uber back to our accommodation. Ted needed to have a nap, so he took a time out. The hosts of our accommodation asked if we'd like to join them for drinks nearby, along with their friends Brian and Angie. Since hanging out with the locals is always one of our favourite things, we definitely couldn't decline.

I'm not sure of the name of the outdoor bar, but it was definitely popular. There was a local sporting team that turned up there after their game, so there was plenty of people. One of the hosts from our B&B became really drunk so we ended up leaving and going for dinner nearby. Brian lost his mobile phone but didn't seem as concerned about it as we were! The hosts went back early (as the bar staff were refusing them service), so we stayed and had a few drinks with Brian and Angie. Since our accommodation was so close we were able to walk back. We have an early flight tomorrow so we're already packed for the next part of our adventure.

      Musicians corner music festival

      May 19, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We didn't want to be real touristy in Nashville but we wanted to experience the music. Elisa googled and found a free musical festival called Musicians Corner about 20 minutes from the KOA.

Before our adventure out we all had a fun time in the pool, trying to stay cool in the humidity. The kids had such a great time and exhausted themselves that they had a great nap on the way to the festival.

We got there right when it started, before the stage began, but the one tent was showing the royal wedding. The event happens from May to July on Fri and sat and are free events. We saw 8 artists and the best was Cordova. They were awesome. The last act was a chic from England that we believe that we have heard on a local radio back at home.

There was one large stage and one small stage while the big stage changes artists. There was a few food trucks and Inara loved the retro snow cone truck. There was also a kids area where Brandon played with some kids. He played all the sports there on offer.

We also met a lovely family who sat next to us halfway though with kids about the same age. The little girl had a soccer ball and her and Brandon had a great time. There was also a Mexican guy, our age, behind us and he started playing with Brandon. Brandon had so much fun,.and so did this guy. He said Brandon is a natural and was very impressed.

It was a fun day but long as we sat in the sun and heat all day long. The lines for food and drinks were too long but all that didn't matter.

We were all exhausted but didn't not want to go out on a Sat night in Nashville. The family we met gave us a few touristy suggestions and we decided on heading to the Oprey.

The Oprey is a large complex that is known for its name as a event stadium where all the big names sing at. The Oprey has hotel rooms, shops, restaurants, bars, and is all under one roof, split up in different sections. We spent a few hours walking around seeing the " Delta " section, the rainforest section and another one. The delta had a river and you could ride a boat around. The rainforest had lots of plants, waterfalls, starry nights. We had a quick dinner at an Italian restaurant and got to watch dancing water. It was a nice surprise and we definetly want to come back and stay there, as at the end of this year there is a water park being built called sound wave.

It was a late night but we all enjoyed this unique experience and had a great sleep.

      Nashville

      June 15, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Well, words can't even describe how much of an once in a lifetime experience today was.

It started off great with a complimentary breakfast in Gatlinburg, I went for cereal and cinammon toast while dad went for a double sausage & egg sandwich

After a stop at Dolly Partons home town we drove all morning before stopping at a Cracker barrels for lunch. It was nice to stop a real American type cafe. I went for traditional chicken and dumplings with biscuit, dad went for a roast beef dinner. Though I wouldn't have it again I'm glad I tried the chicken dumplings. I didn't enjoy the cornbread it was much too salty for me but I enjoyed the warm biscuit (a lot like a scone but with salt in) I had it with jam on the coach

Next up was the main event - Nashville. The afternoon was spent up at the Country Hall of fame museum, where I spent an hour fangirling over Taylor Swift displays. We had a quick walk on the main strip then stopped for a cold drink the temperature was 33 degrees and we were feeling it. The studio B tour was next, while it was a humble room, the tour guide was excellent giving you a real feel of the room and the greatness that had transpired here. I got a bit emotional wishing mum was able to experience where Elvis produced so much of his best work

We had a great surprise at the hotel. Tea was included along with three free drinks. We had baked potatoes with chicken, veg, chilli and nachos. I went for a wine while dad had brandy and coke. We then toasted a beer for dad and a mojito for me while looking out over the skyline before heading down into Nashville itself.

I'll never forget the experience of Nashive. The atmosphere was buzzing with live country music blasting out from every venue. It was feast for the senses, you really felt like you were witnessing some amazing talent and possible future country stars. We had a couple of beers trying a few different bars with a rooftop bar. Singing and dancing along in the heat with a beer in hand was paradise. It wasn't like clubs or bars back home where everyone is leary or jostling with each other, it was respectful and you felt everyone was joined together by the appreciation of the music. Dad went back to the hotel and I stayed out for one more beer in the Honky Tonk bar, I felt safe and welcome, even meeting a few people. I never wanted it to end. I felt like I'd got the true country girl experience that I've always longed for from when I was first introduced to the genre by Taylor swift at 14 years old.

      Downtown Nashville

      August 11, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

I get an early start to the day and start walking downtown. I eventually find the visitors center. The man was so helpful. He gave me a a walking map of the city and I started wandering walking by all the history and making my way to the capital. The capital tour guide let us know that it was the only capital building to have two people buried in the walls and four more buried on the grounds. Pretty interesting.Read more

DAY 3 Belmont Mansion, Downtown, Museums

      February 8, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 34 °F

What a day. We took the hop-on- hop-off bus to tour the city. Belmont Mansion, the largest mansion house in TN. Built by Adelicia Acklen, the richest women and forward thinking. Maddie was afraid to use the Mansion's potty, chicken. Had to shop for a cowgirl hat and see the honkytonks. The Parthenon is the "Athens of the South" and an exact Greek replica. The Athena statue is 42 ft in the Parthenon, but Maddie shines brighter. In Centennial Park, a statue of both Black and white suffragists backing the 19th Amendment.Read more
