Voor vandaag een auto gehuurd. Een kleintje "economic" kunnen we om half negen ophalen. Eerst 2 haltes met de metro en dan nog een stukje lopen. De auto is er nog niet. Alvast de papieren ingevuld. De auto die we gereserveerd hebben is "not avalible" we krijgen een grotere mee voor dezelfde prijs. Of willen we de pick-up truck. Nee dank u. Het wordt een Nissan Altima een dikke middenklasser. 4 wiel aandrijving 2 liter turbo. Lekkere bak. Kennen we in Nederland dus niet.
We zouden eerst naar Long Island rijden maar na een tip van een nicht van Anja is het het noorden van de staat New York en Connecticut geworden. Toch nog wat herfstkleuren mee gepakt. Geluncht in de Town of Yorktown en toen lekker binnendoor naar New Haven aan de kust.
Lekker getourd, mooi weer, fijne auto. Was weer een heerlijke dag.Read more

Am Sonntag war es soweit. Wir haben Megan zum Campus gebracht und uns verabschiedet 👋. Holgi hat ein paar Tränchen 😿 verdrückt, aber Megan war tapfer 💪 und hat das alles super gemanagt. Am Abend war sie mit den Zimmernachbarin und zwei, drei anderen Mädels noch im 7eleven im Ort, als wir auch dort waren. So haben wir noch einen kurzen Blick 👀 und Gruß erhascht, mehr war nicht drin, das war wohl zu peinlich😂.Read more

Traveler Das stimmt. Als wir da waren, ist noch ein anderes Elternpaar dort gewesen, die ihre Tochter gebracht haben. Die saßen noch draußen, nickten Holgi und mir ganz verständnisvoll zu. Ihnen war wohl auch schon mulmig.

Am Samstag sind wir in Tarrytown 🏙 angekommen, wo Megan👩‍🎓💕die nächsten Monate bei EF auf dem Campus 🏫 bleiben wird. Tarrytown ist wirklich ein netter Vorort von New York direkt am Hudson River 🌉 (die Skyline 🌆 von NY konnte man sogar vom Ufer aus sehen) mit kleiner Mainstreet 🏘, die am Samstagabend gesperrt wurde, dass alle Restaurants Tische 🍽 und Stühle 🪑 rausstellen konnten.Read more

Larchmont day 35kms away from NYC
Great day away from the metropolis! Good day to give the bronchioles a rest. We have walked 16847 steps, so far today temp27c and fortunately over avercast.
First up, Grand Central Station to catch our train, then to Rockridge road where David spent 5 years as a youth when his father Neil worked for THC NZ (and was trying to attract tourists to NZ). Be careful what you wish for!
Larchmont is fairly fabulous! Photos to follow. We had lunch at a Spanish establishment Bradley’s! We tried to encourage David & Euan to use their Duolingo Spanish with minimal success🤣. After listening to this practice I think we need them to shape up!!!
Then to the nearby beach, and the walk back to the station. Cecily & I are pleased to have missed the train - a half an hour reprieve! Very beautiful especially in spring, providing you have ‘made it big in NYC, I expect. Discussing dinner arrangements that don’t require me to walk any further😂😘 great day!Read more

Traveler Oh those clematis! Sounds like the kind of trip you can only do when you have retired and have no time pressure. I’m lucky to do 1000 steps at present and using a stick when away from the house.

Traveler Hi Gill, yes, def. a retirement enterprise! When we chat with ‘young’ people they are very envious. I hope we don’t wreck their savings plans! Any news on the hip surgery? I have finished my prednisone today for the bronchitis so hopefully the energy level don’t crash & 🔥!

Day 3 in NYC

Our day starts, as most others have on this trip, with the complementary breakfast. The one at this hotel is average. Nothing beats The Embassy in that regard! For reasons unknown, there is no shuttle today to get us to the train station. So, we drive instead. When we get there we discover that it is metered parking. At 25 cents per 1/4 hour we would need a lot of quarters for the day! Fortunately, there's an app for that. All I had to do was download it and enter our location number and we were good to go. Even has a feature built in to help you find your vehicle in case you forgot where you parked it!

On arrival at Grand Central Station we find our way out of this massive building and start our day's walking tour. First stop, the MoMA. This world renowned Museum of Modern Art has a large collection of works by many great artists including Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, Monet and others. Too much to take it all in during a single visit so we choose a few of the many rooms and spend a couple of hours enjoying the art. A free app was available with an audio tour so that you could get insights into many of the more famous works.

Next not the day's agenda was the Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Center. Unfortunately, it was going to cost the family over $200 to take an elevator to the top. We decided that Laura and Emma would go up and I would walk to Macy's with the boys. We would meet up again later. Once together, we visited a few other stores nearby and had a lunch. From there we spent a bit more time walking about and enjoying the atmosphere before heading back to the train station by Metro.Read more

After lunch we walked out through the mansions to Umbrella point. Met some nice French locals. Big houses with primarily wooden shingled roofs. Quite warm again, 27 degrees on my watch
