      Ha Giang, Lung Cu

      April 12 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

I am starting to be a bit lazy to write the rapports. So I had to write it backward🙈

Ha Giang loop, so famous for the backpackers! A lot pf people just come to Hanoi, take a bus to Ha Giang rent a motorbike for a few days and afterthat go back to Hanoi. Its probably one of the most beautiful part from nord Vietnam. And because of so many tourists riding a motorbike without a driving licence,(you need to have a international A. Normal driving licence B it's not enough) there is of course a lot of police controls focus just for them. I knew it and was a bit afraid of it, becouse I don't have A. I count on my luck, but this time I wasn't so lucky. After 100km after Ha Giang I got a police control. It wasn't so bad on the end. There was only one policeman, who could speak english. He told me some shits about driving here in Vietnam and than gave me two options. They either take my motorbike for 7 days or I will have to pay 1.5 Milion Dong (60 Euro). I said him I pay him just 1 Milion (40 Euro) or if he wants, he can take my motorbike ( I just bluff). And it worked! He watched me for a minute, than he took a milion and I could get out :) Funny story. It's not so much money for us from the europe, but here it's a lot of money. So I was a bit pissed of, because I heard it will be cheaper. Afterthat I said, that for next time I will have to have a fake international driving licence with an A, just on the picture in mobile. So now I have it and hope, that next time, there will be no bribe necessary.

Well, after the experience I drove throught the most beautiful passes I have ever seen (just in Switzerland are more beautiful) to the northest part of Vietnam in Lung Cu, heard there the vietnam's anthem and drove for a next adventure.

Btw at least I got lucky with a weather. It's not sunny, not rainy, not cloudy. It's still somehow between :)

      Da drüben ist China

      May 27, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

      August 24, 2022 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

The Ha Giang Loop - Day 2 (Views!!!)

      January 15 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After a night of partying and lots of Happy Water shots, we set off at 9am for a 83km drive that would bring us up close to the Chinese border. It would turn out to probably be the best day on the loop as the views behind every corner just got better and better.

But first things first. The forecast was for slight rain, so most of the group put on their ponchos, but Amy and I had hope and did not want to look too ridiculous. Anyway, after about 45 minutes, we drove up a series of curvy roads to our first viewpoint. Looking down on the roads that we had just driven a few minutes ago was spectacular - the misty clouds hanging in the mountains added to a mysterious backdrop.

After the second viewpoint of the day, we unfortunately encountered some drizzle as we drove straight into the clouds. Putting on the poncho was a serious consideration.
However, as we drove further north, the rain became less and less and once it stopped the sun even managed to peak out. So ponchos were fortunately not necessary.

Just before lunch, we arrived in Lung Cu, Vietnam's most northern city/town and located close to the Chinese border. We hiked up the flagpole for great views over the surroundings and a peak into China. However, after lunch, we headed much closer to the border and with views that were simply stunning. Carved into a deep valley on the Chinese side was a huge zick-zack path surrounded by steep mountains. It was a truly spectacular sight.

We thought this would have been the best view of the day, but as we drove closer to our overnight destination, we encountered some serious contenders. The mountains in northern Vietnam with its lush green and dramatic mountain sides flowing into large valleys are a sight to behold. And we were driving with quite some speed and no guardrails only a meter or so away from these abysses - it was so much fun!

On the final stretch, we drove down the valley to Dong Van, our overnight accommodation.
Once we arrived and had dinner, the Happy Water shots came out again in full force. What started civilised turned into a big party with almost everyone dancing on the table and cheering with Happy Water.

In short, Day 2 was truly amazing - dramatic views, a spectacular drive and an unforgettable experience. At the end of the day I came to the conclusion that the hype was definitely justified - the Ha Giang Loop should most definitely be included on any Vietnam itinerary!

      Northernmost point

      October 8, 2023 in Vietnam

Today, Dad and I made our way up to the moth northern part of Vietnam.

We set off from Yen Min and made our way towards Dong Van. Being the most northern town in Vietnam, it was a little run down, but on the Ha Giang loop, it was also quite touristy. We arrived there about midday, today's ride only being a couple of hours.

Once there, we checked in, grabbed some food, and set off again. This time, I rode pillion and navigated as we wound our way up through the mountains once more to Lung Cu, the flagpole overlooking China.

Ha Giang Loop - Day 2

      April 22, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌩️ 29 °C

      Sore butts.

Left Dong Van this morning to go up to the northern most part of Vietnam, Lung Cu. From here, we could see where Vietnam ends and southern China begins. While we were here Matt became the tourist attraction again and had numerous photos taken with him.

After lunch we went through one of the most beautiful spots of the country, Ma Pi Leng Pass. We drove some sketchy dirt roads and were rewarded with (not having to walk up and) incredibly beautiful 360 views of mountain peaks and paddy fields.

In Meo Vac on route to our home stay, we visited a site where once a year they hold a “Love Market” where ex lovers come together and just mingle. Weird. It’s almost like a festival of sorts!

Our home stay was very homely. A mattress on the floor with a giant mosquito net and a wasps nest right above us (and a wasp on the mosquito net that’s been there for a while…). We had dinner with locals in a very communal setting. They fed us lots of delicious Vietnamese dishes and lots more rice wine! (Literally brought out a 20L plastic can of homemade rice wine..).

As I’m writing this now it’s raining. Not just drizzling but full on thunderstorm, this wooden-old-house-is-going-to-blow-away type storm.. Gotta love Asia!

      3. Tag: Há Giang Loop

      June 29, 2018 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      3. Tag und der Popo schmerzt immer noch! Angekommen!

      September 13, 2016 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C
