    Heading off...

    24. heinäkuuta, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

And we're off! 🚆✈️ The holiday kicked off with a smooth start – we dropped the car off at Nat & Conor’s (legends!), then jumped on the train down to Sydney. From there, it was a quick hop on the light rail to Tash & Paolo’s, where we were treated to delicious food and even better company. Honestly, how lucky are we to have such wonderful friends?

And speaking of wonderful – Tash, you absolute angel – she got up at the crack of dawn to drive us to the airport at 6am in 6°C! God bless her, truly 🙌💛

Then it was business lounge o’clock for a bit of breaky and a cheeky Mimi or two to toast the adventures ahead 🥂 Let the good times begin!

    25. heinäk.–5. elok., Thaimaa ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We finally arrived at the apartment late in the evening after battling long weekend traffic (we forgot it was the Kings birthday), and from there slipped straight into holiday mode. Our days quickly fell into a rhythm of sleep ins, training sessions, swims, coffees, and lazy hours by the pool in between little outings. We stocked up on supplies at Market Village and did a bit of shopping in town – including a much-needed new suitcase, a cozzie, and a couple of hats for Pete – and treated ourselves to plenty of massages (some better than others!).

Evenings were spent eating out, enjoying live music, and soaking up the atmosphere at some of our favourite spots like 3 Monkeys, Nong Kim, and Lung Ja. A couple of highlights included a Latin Night at Anantasila, where I winged it and copied the professional dancers they had there...it was heaps of fun and a surprise run-in with Chrissy and John at Bitabar (who I used to work with at Telstra many moons ago). The food has been fantastic – from spicy Tom Yum and Thai Green Curry to a whole fish that defeated me but not Pete.

We missed seeing Wishart as he'd returned back to his village during low season, but the service around town has been excellent, and we’ve had just the right mix of relaxation and fun. From nights out with live music to quiet mornings by the pool, it’s been a perfect start to the holiday.

    25. heinäk.–5. elok., Thaimaa ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

The past few days have been a lovely mix of relaxation and getting cruise‑ready. We’ve enjoyed a super relaxing day at the beach, more pool sessions and squeezed in a couple more training sessions. Got my hair and nails did, so everything is falling into place.

The last 2 nights in Bangers was a fun stopover – wandering the riverfront, treating ourselves to (more) massages (I'm getting a bit sick of them really - nah only kidding lol), enjoying the Sheraton lounge spoils and more than a few red wines.

Plenty of downtime, sunshine, and indulgence – all going to plan before the next leg of our adventure!

Bye Thailand! Hope to visit you again at Christmas 🎄

PS: the Qatar lounge is posh AF! We're fitting right in 🤣

  • Istanbul (on our own)

    5.–7. elok., Turkki ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

    Day 1 – Arrival
We landed at the airport around 6:30pm - it was hot, crowded, and the air was full of smoke. We people watched while waiting for our driver, who arrived about 20 minutes later. The drive to the hotel took about 50 minutes. Once we arrived and checked in, I crashed almost immediately as I hadn’t slept much on the way over. Pete, on the other hand, had a complimentary beer or 2 and unpacked, bless his cotton socks!
    Day 2 – First Explorations
We woke up in our room to realise it’s absolutely stunning - decadent, even. The walls are painted a deep forest green, with a high, ornate ceiling, a sparkling chandelier, and heavy, floor-to-ceiling velvet curtains. It was very fancy. We both slept well, but still a bit lethargic from the trip.
We started the day with breakfast on the hotel’s rooftop bar and restaurant - great food and a view that made us feel like we were right in the heart of it all, then with our trusty map in hand, we set off.
We walked along the foreshore to Gülhane Park, which was absolutely beautiful. The gardens are well-maintained, full of colour and life. There were several museums nearby, but most were under restoration, so not much to see on that front. The park itself had a mix of people - some tourists, some locals napping on benches, a few evidently homeless. There were a few lovely fountains which made for a peaceful and scenic stroll. From there, we made our way to the famous Blue Mosque. It was packed - so many people! Definitely a tourist hotspot. The weather was warm, about 28°C, but a slight breeze kept us cool. We sat on the grass to rest and people watched for a while. Next, we stood in line for about half an hour (a small line compared to some of the others going to see the various mosque’s or museums) to buy tickets for the Basilica Cistern -and it was well worth the wait. After descending a few steep flights of stairs, we entered a vast, cool, underground chamber that once served as a water storage and filtration system for the palace. It was breathtaking. Many of the columns used were scavenged from older ruins, giving the place an eerie and majestic feel. From here, we wandered over to the Grand Bazaar - an endless maze of stalls offering the same ten or so wares on repeat. It was absolutely enormous, a labyrinth of sights, sounds, and smells. I wasn’t in the market for another fake designer handbag, but we did pick up a beautiful decorative glass pendant as a souvenir – which we’ll add to our wall when we get home. Eventually, we stopped at a charming little café on a corner for a cold drink and a bite to eat. We sat for a while, soaking in the atmosphere - the perfect pause from the bustle of the bazaar. Afterward, we headed back to the hotel for a quick rest and a much-needed shower before dinner. Taking the concierge’s recommendation, we walked to a rooftop bar and restaurant nearby called Mezze 360. We shared a delicious platter for 2 along with sizzling doner beef, tender lamb, and golden, grilled halloumi. Yummo!
Stuffed and happy, we strolled back to the hotel and capped off the night with a cheeky rooftop cocktail while checking out at the glowing city skyline. The highlight of the day? No contest - the Basilica Cistern. Completely mesmerizing.
Day 3 – The Turkish Bath Experience (Hammam)
Our last day on our own before boarding the ship, and I was determined to experience a traditional Turkish bath - something that had been highly recommended by several friends. While most were quite pricey, the hotel concierge found one that was both reputable and reasonably priced, complete with pick-up and drop-off service. Soon enough, a lovely young man arrived in a golf cart to collect me, and I was whisked away through the streets - feeling slightly like a VIP and slightly like luggage. And 5 minutes later, we arrived at another hotel where the hammam was located. I was handed a small cotton wrap (think tea towel, not beach towel), a pair of foam slippers, and a locker for my belongings. First up: a 15-minute dry sauna, followed by 15 minutes in the steam room - although I tapped out at 10; it was intense and I was on the verge of melting. Then the real experience began. I was led into a private room centred around a massive marble slab, with water basins dotted around the edges. My masseuse, who was lovely - asked me to remove the towel and lie face-up on the marble. Um, okay then. If I’ve ever felt like an offering to the Gods, this was it. What followed was pure bliss: warm water was poured over me using a silver bowl, the sensation instantly soothing. She then scrubbed me from head to toe with a loofah and salt scrub - both front and back - before rinsing me off again in great theatrical splashes. A cooling clay face mask came next, followed by a lavender-scented foam massage that filled the air (and my hair) with bubbles. Just when I thought it couldn’t get more luxurious, she washed and conditioned my hair - right there on the marble like I was a goddess of some ancient spa temple. The final rinse was like standing under a warm, gushing waterfall. I floated out of that room a new woman. It was hands down the best, most indulgent treatment I’ve ever had. 10/10, I would become a hammam regular if I lived here!

  • First day on the ship | Istanbul, Turkey

    7.–8. elok., Turkki ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

    Day 3 (part 2)
After my hammam experience, we made our way to the port to board the ship – so exciting! Once we figured out where the entrance was (a bit of a mission!), we were welcomed aboard with an induction and then shown to our room. It’s compact but lovely, with a little balcony where we can sit out and watch the world drift by as we sail. As Pete had advised them that it was our anniversary, we found a beautiful chocolate cake and a bottle of champagne in our room - yew! We then set off on a self-guided tour of the ship – and wow, it’s amazing. There are so many beautiful areas to relax in, the gym is impressive, and the bars and restaurants all look fantastic. We’re really looking forward to settling in and making the most of everything on board. We spent our first night on the ship while it was still docked, which gave us a chance to unwind and get our bearings. Now we’re all set and super keen for our first tour tomorrow! After a leisurely sleep-in and a delicious breakfast, we packed our backpacks and set off on our first tour of the trip. Everything was impressively organised—groups were pre-arranged, and each person received a headset to hear the guide clearly. They were surprisingly effective, even for those of us who might lag behind or get momentarily distracted! Our guide, Ishmail, was excellent—he spoke English well and, with a degree in History, was full of fascinating facts and stories and was quite funny. We drove around the city walls before our first stop: the Istanbul Spice Market. It’s a smaller, more manageable version of the Grand Bazaar, but still vibrant and full of character. We picked up some Turkish towels, a selection of teas, and a mix of Turkish delight (which we may or may not saving for later!). Next, we visited the Pasha Mosque—and it was absolutely stunning. The interior tiles were breathtaking. I had brought a long-sleeved shirt to cover my arms, but hadn’t realised I’d need to cover my hair as well—so I got creative and wrapped the shirt around my head. It wasn’t the most fashionable look, but it did the job!
After the mosque, we made our way back to the port. One excursion down… 24 to go! We ended the day sitting at the bar, watching the ship slowly leave Istanbul. It’s such a surreal feeling to be sailing away rather than flying—it somehow feels more adventurous. Next stop: Çanakkale!

  • Canakkale & Troy, Turkey

    9. elokuuta, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Day 3 on the cruise, and we woke up to find we had arrived in Çanakkale (completely forgot to take a photo—oops!). Our tour departed around 8:00 AM, and we set off by coach to explore the ancient city of Troy and learn about its rich history. The weather was warm but thankfully not too hot—perfect for exploring. We learned that Troy actually has nine layers of cities, dating all the way back to 2920 BC. It had been rebuilt time and time again, sometimes due to natural disasters and other times after being completely destroyed—most notably by the Greeks and Spartans. Standing among the ruins, it was hard to wrap our heads around just how ancient it all was. Such a fascinating visit! I looked for Brad Pitt but he was nowhere to be found ☹ We ended the tour with a walk through the town and harbour, stopping at various monuments and memorials dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the war—a humbling experience that brought a different depth to the day. Later, as we sailed past Anzac Cove, we listened to one of the ship’s historians speak about its significance. It was a powerful and emotional moment, quietly taking in the view while hearing the stories of those who served. To end the day, we indulged in a degustation dinner at the Chef’s Table—and it absolutely lived up to expectations. A perfect finish to a day full of history, reflection, and a little luxury.Lue lisää

  • Kuşadası & Ephesus, Turkey

    10. elokuuta, Turkki ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Woke up in Kuşadası this morning, and wow — what a view to wake up to! Sparkling sea, warm sunshine, and the kind of peaceful morning that makes you feel like you're really on holiday. Today we toured Ephesus — which, to be honest, we’d never heard of before this trip. But it turns out it's one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world and the largest archaeological site in the world, and it was absolutely incredible. Walking through ruins from thousands of years ago was surreal. Our guide was an ancient history teacher who does tours during school holidays. He was super knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. After asking where everyone was from, he cracked this one:
“What’s the difference between a canoe and Australians? - a canoe tips.”
LOL — no offence taken, it’s not far from the truth!
Ephesus was built in the 10th century BC and once had a population of 250,000 people — huge for that time. The ampitheatre was massive and held 24,000 people...Elton John (among others) have performed here. There's no proof but it is assumed that Mary, the mother of Jesus, died in Ephesus is based on Christian tradition as Jesus had entrusted St John to care for her, and John took this responsibility seriously and cared for Mary for the rest of her life. It was a scorcher today, and the walking route was quite steep. A few people really struggled with the heat — one poor lady nearly passed out from heatstroke. Thankfully she recovered okay. We picked up a small souvenir and headed back to the lovely cool air-conditioned coach. Just as we were leaving, a guy in a car reversed into the side of our bus without looking. Cue much shouting, flapping, and paperwork. Eventually, we were back on our way.
Once back at the port, we decided to skip the Turkish rug-making demo (zero pressure to buy anything... ha!) and explored the nearby shops. I was determined to find a gozleme before we left Turkey — but no luck. I asked around and was told they weren’t available in that area. Sad face.
Back on the ship, it was time for Pete’s haircut. His travel clippers short-circuited and he ended up with a military-style crew cut. Whoops! Luckily, it’s just hair — it’ll grow back. Only 8,500 steps today, but it felt like double that in the heat! The insulated water bottles we bought in Thailand have definitely come in handy!

  • Rhodes, Greece

    11. elokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Today we woke up in Greece—Rhodes, to be exact! This stunning island is the largest of the Dodecanese and home to the biggest inhabited medieval town in Europe. It’s like stepping straight into a storybook. The Old Town is incredibly well preserved, encircled by magnificent crescent-shaped fortifications that stretch for 5 kilometres. Some sections of the wall are 40 feet thick—built not just to withstand fully armed marauders, but also to impress travellers journeying along the ancient trade routes between East and West. There are still 11 original gates leading into the Old Town, each with its own unique history and character. Bring a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rhodes is a rich blend of Frankish and Ottoman architecture—with grand bastions, towering fortresses, and centuries-old churches scattered throughout the maze-like streets. And then there are the cats—everywhere - they rule the town!
One of the absolute highlights was visiting the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, originally built in the 14th century. It has around 200 rooms and the mosaic tilework is incredible. Knowing the stones were cut by hand adds a whole new level of appreciation for the craftsmanship. After soaking in all that history, we made our way across town to the beach... which was absolutely packed! Picture Bondi in peak summer—but replace the Aussie vibe with a full-on Euro takeover. We asked about renting sunbeds, but at €80 for a set, we decided to embrace our inner backpackers and just lie on the beach (smooth rocks) instead. Luckily we'd pre-empted this swim and packed our Turkish towels ;-) I made a beeline for the water, expecting it to be lukewarm—but it was cool and so refreshing. We hung out here for a couple of hours, people-watching and soaking up the sun, before heading to the square for lunch. A pork gyros, a fresh Greek salad, and a couple of icy beers later—we were in food heaven. Yummo! Eventually, we strolled back to the ship, ready for another epic dinner. Thankfully there’s a gym on board... otherwise, we’d probably have to roll ourselves home. The cruise director did joke at the beginning to ditch our skinny jeans—I don't think it was a joke!

  • Crete, Greece

    12. elokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Crete was once home to the Minoans, Europe’s earliest recorded civilisation, and later enjoyed a Renaissance building boom that helped make Heraklion one of the most strongly fortified cities in the region. The island may be small, but it’s blessed with mountains, gorges, rivers and some stunning beaches. Sadly, the beaches were too far for us to reach this time, so we had to give them a miss. Instead, we explored the city’s museum, which was absolutely packed with Minoan artefacts! After soaking up the exhibits, we wandered through the town, which was buzzing with souvenir shops and very touristy vibes. From there we strolled down to the foreshore for a few photos (including some windswept selfies!) but the strong breeze meant we didn’t stay long.
Back on the “Mothership,” it was time for poolside cocktails – the bar does a daily special slushy that you can spike with your choice of spirit. My current favourite is the vodka cranberry slushy, while Pete has been enjoying a tequila lemon one. Dinner was yet another delicious feast (I must remember to take more food pics!), and we finished off the evening with an entertaining ABBA show in the theatre – everyone was singing along. A fun day all up, with 8,500 steps to show for it!

  • Athens, Greece

    13. elokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today we arrived in Piraeus, Athens, and made our way straight to the legendary Acropolis. The climb up the steep steps (alongside what felt like half of Europe’s tourists!) was well worth it, although the crowds were suffocating—the view from the top was absolutely breathtaking. Standing by the massive ancient structures was amazing, especially the amphitheatre, which once held around 16,000 spectators. Afterwards, we wandered through the charming Plaka District—so colourful, lively, and full of character. We stumbled upon the city’s oldest bar, where they still distill their own Ouzo. Naturally, we couldn’t resist picking up a sample bottle (plus some Limoncello for good measure). A beer, an Ouzo, and a glass of wine later, I was happily fluffy and suggested it was time to return to the Mothership to get ready for dinner. Cue photos! Nearly 11,000 steps today—well earned.Lue lisää

  • Athens, Greece

    14. elokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Relax Day: Today was all about much-needed rest and recovery after so many busy days! No trekking on the itinerary—just pure relaxation. We spent time enjoying the thermal pool, steam room, sauna, and even braved the cold plunge pool (the snow room was sadly out of service 😢—maybe next time!). Cameras weren’t allowed in most areas, so we don’t have many photos, though we did sneak in a couple of cheeky shots of me with the cold-water bucket. Of course, we couldn’t leave Athens without the mandatory dinner photos before saying goodbye!Lue lisää

  • Ancient Olympia, Greece

    15. elokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Today we arrived at the port of Katakolon, Greece, and set off to explore the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Our drive through the valleys of the western Peloponnese was beautiful, with endless olive groves and vineyards lining the way. The first Olympic Park, built in 776 BC, was incredible to see in person. Athletes once trained and competed here in running, javelin, discus, the standing long jump (where the record stood close to 4 meters!), and even exciting chariot races. Among the ruins, the Temple of Zeus stood out—it was once home to a magnificent 14-metre-high gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Sadly, it was later taken by the Ottomans to Istanbul, where it was ultimately destroyed. The Temple of Hera was equally striking, and the huge stadium, which held around 45,000 spectators, was astonishing—such an impressive size for its time. I couldn’t resist running my own little race on the ancient track (and yes, I won!). My “personal photographer” didn’t quite manage to film the event, but at least captured one action photo. The warm day called for a refreshing beer before returning to the ship, where we enjoyed live music from the talented onboard musician, Daniel, followed by yet another delicious dinner.Lue lisää

  • Corfu, Greece

    16. elokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We awoke this morning in beautiful Corfu and set off on a tour of the Old Town. It’s such a charming and picturesque place, full of character and history. We learned a fun story about the British Governor who wanted to build a residence here. When the government refused to approve or fund it, he cleverly requested the construction of a council chambers instead—then went ahead and designed it as his dream home! After wandering the town (and picking up a few souvenirs), we found a lovely spot for yet another refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea—pure bliss. This evening we had our second booking at the Chef’s Table, featuring a Californian degustation menu (still not sure what makes it Californian!). The food itself was a bit average, but we were happy to score a window seat and enjoy the view.Lue lisää

  • Kotor, Montenegro

    17. elokuuta, Montenegro ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Well, what can I say! Our Cruise Director suggested we be up on deck around 6:00am to watch our arrival into Montenegro, promising breathtaking views. He wasn’t wrong. We didn’t quite manage 6:00 on the dot, but even a little later the sight was indescribable. Pete and I just stood there in silence, broken only by repeated "wows", as we cruised through the scenery for a good twenty minutes.

Kotor lies at the end of a 27 km inlet that connects the Adriatic Sea to the heart of the city. We sailed past towering cliffs that rise dramatically above what was once a river canyon—often called Europe’s southernmost fjord.

The Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval centers on the Adriatic, with endless terracotta rooftops, narrow cobbled streets, and magnificent Venetian walls first built in 1420. Our walking tour revealed how the Ottomans tried for 500 years to conquer Kotor, but the fortress and mountain wall were so ingeniously constructed that the city held strong throughout.

Afterwards, we climbed up the mountain path to the ruins of a castle perched high above. The views from the top were simply spectacular—well worth the effort, even though I nearly gave up halfway. The descent was easier, but my jelly legs told the story!

Kotor has definitely been a highlight so far—utterly unforgettable.

  • Dubrovnik, Croatia

    18. elokuuta, Kroatia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Another big walking day today! We arrived at Dubrovnik Port around 7am, had breakfast, and set off on our tour of the Old Town at 8:45. Beautiful 12th century medieval streets and incredibly preserved structures, narrow cobbled streets spilling out from the main square, full of charm and history. The city is famous for its many appearances in *Game of Thrones*, including the iconic “walk of shame” scene. It is spectacularly surrounded by a towering medieval wall (which we walked around). The main point of entry, the Pile Gate, once employed a drawbridge to keep invaders out. The peaceful 14th centry Fraciscan Monastery and Apothecary, house the world oldest working pharmacy and fine collection of Renaissance paintings.

After taking all of this in, we walked the entire length of the city walls, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. From there, we took the cable car up to the summit, where we were treated to spectacular panoramas—sparkling Adriatic Sea on one side, dramatic mountains on the other. Absolutelty magnificent.

Once back down, we made our way to a little bay we’d spotted earlier from the walls. We had our very first swim in the Adriatic Sea, and it was divine! The water was crystal-clear, filled with schools of fish, and perfect for floating. I only wished I’d brought a mask and snorkel. I even convinced Pete to join me for a dip—and I have photographic evidence of him enjoying it!

I could have stayed there all afternoon, but eventually the bar on the ship beckoned. We hopped on the shuttle bus back, straight to the pool deck for a slushy cocktail and a cold beer to round out the day. And yes, we enjoyed another amazing meal for dinner!
