Passed the southern most point in Australia this morning! So glad to see land after rough sea days. A few other cruise ships in our lane. The Viking Sky is our sister ship on a World Cruise as well. Spent two days in Melbourne exploring gardens, the Zoo, markets and the very cool Laneways. They have some strange potato chips. A very hot 97 degrees down here in the summer! Last photo is the Viking Neptune leaving the port of Melbourne.Read more

Phillip’s Island Australia

Phillip’s Island did not disappoint. Storms knocked out the power to the island but didn’t deter the Gallaghers. Found a nice bike rental operation open for business and set a course for the nature parks. Finding the first one closed moved on to the second. The staff was very friendly and let us wonder through the Koala Preserve free of charge. Great place to see rescued Koalas up close. Even found some Wallaby’s in the distance. The evening was topped off with the Penguin Parade. Every night the Blue Penguins come out of the surf and march in groups to their burrows in the dunes. No photography is allowed but they gave us some shots to share. Back to the ship by midnight!Read more

Woke up in the small town of Eden, Australia. The area is the top whale watching destination in Australia. Rich whaling history with many fascinating stories of the time. The Killer Whales have pushed the whales up in the bay for centuries. Early whalers learned to reward the Killer Whales with choice cuts of the catch for this behavior. Made a very successful whaling community.Read more

Sydney is incredible. Toured gardens, beaches, harbors… The Sydney Opera house is everything we expected and more. Our ship parked right next to the Opera House and the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge. Has to be the best berth in the world. Certainly down under. The four of us attended an Opera in the Sydney Opera House, Saturday night.Read more

Walked the beautiful parks and gardens of Sydney Sunday morning. Finished the afternoon with a self guided pub crawl in The Rocks. Went to Fortune of War, Glenmore Hotel, Australia Pub and The Lord Nelson Hotel. Too tired and drunk to walk back, Uber to the rescue!Read more

Great Barrier Reef

Diving the Great Barrier Reef was amazing. Looking at our itinerary for this cruise, this was my number one item on the Bucket List. It did not disappoint.
We took a 90 minute boat ride to a huge platform on the reef. From the platform we took a smaller boat to the edge of the reef wall and snorkeled. Incredible coral and fish.Read more

Sailed to Thursday Island on this rainy Sunday. Very small town, mostly closed on Sunday. The native children from the 7-12 Boarding School performed some local dances. Very special to see the faces light up with this many visitors. The waters, mountains and beaches are beautiful. No beach days here, Salt Water Crocodiles…Read more

Cruised into Komodo National Park, Indonesia at sunrise. The park encompasses 29 islands. Truly looks like The Land That Time Forgot. The island we visited (Rinca) has 1400 Komodo Dragons roaming and feeding off Water Buffalo, Deer, Wild Pigs and an occasional Monkey for an appetizer.Read more

Day one in Bali was very interesting. The Balinese were celebrating Galungan. The celebration marks the perseverance of Good over Evil. Tens of thousands of people were at the temple we visited.

Traveler Yes, a very holy temple. Each spout brings a different type of spiritual cleansing. The spring itself looks like Juniper Springs (the sand boils) just black volcanic sand.

Toured Semarang today visiting the oldest church, the Rainbow Village and a large Chinese Temple complex. The Protestant Church was built in 1753, located in the middle of Old Town with several decaying buildings nearby. This part of town floods during some high tides. The Rainbow Village is housing for the homeless population. The government worked with a paint company to brighten up the neighborhood by painting everything a different color. By the time we got to the 500 year old Chinese Temple it was sweltering hot. Found some shade with a breeze!Read more

Three great days in Saigon. It had been 6 years since my last Vietnam trip, much has changed but the charm is still there. The city really comes alive after dark. Glad to be able to share this with family and friends. Even ran into a few furniture buddies, great to catch up. One of the best food scenes in the world with heavy French and Chinese influences. Six of us had lunch with drinks for $13. 🤑 Progress is everywhere, Subway, bridges, hotels…, wish I had purchased a pre-construction condo on the river when I had the chance. The economy is booming. Great place to visit, my brother Jim said he could live here.Read more

Sailed to the resort island of Koh Samui. The Island was a small safe harbor for fishermen for centuries. Inhabited as a coconut producing island and discovered by tourists during the Vietnam War era. Several of us spent a few hours at Chewang Beach, swimming in the beautiful clear, cool waters was a treat. The lady’s even shopped for clothes right on the beach. Check out the Burger King menu! The island requires us to use local tenders to go ashore. At first sight they are a little sketchy but ended up fast and smooth.Read more

Singapore is an incredibly beautiful and clean city! Chewing gum and not flushing toilets are illegal. Did not see a piece of trash. The gateway for world commerce, established by Sir Stamford Raffles of the East India Trading Company. Singapore Harbor is the parking lot of the world with ships as far as the eye can see. Visited many sites, The Historic District, China Town, India Town, Arab Town and the new Marina Bay Sands. The gardens are spectacular. We could have spent all day! If you like shopping every luxury brand has a flagship on Orchard Road and at Marina Bay Sands. Finished off our Saturday Night with a river cruise and Singapore Slings at the historic Raffles Hotel. Visited the island of Langkawi today. Took a Backwater Mangrove tour in the Kilim Geoforest Park. The natural wonders were incredible. Went to a Bat Cave, a floating Fish Farm and watched the Eagles feed near the mouth of the estuary. Got photos of the Langkawi Eagle and the White Breasted Sea Eagle! Close encounter with a Mangrove Shore Pit Viper hanging in the mangroves. Very fun day.Read more

Walked the old parts of town Fort Cornwallis, Town Hall, City Hall, Church of the Assumption, China Town and Little India! A special stop to tour the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. Called on Phuket, Thailand today. Toured Promthep Cape a towering lookout on the southern most point of the island. On top they have a very unique Elephant Shrine. Visited Wat Chalong Temple that reportedly has a sliver of Lord Buddha’s bone. They let off firecrackers as an offering to the gods. Beautiful place. Stopped by a Cashew Factory and then off to Patong Beach. Lunch with Joy and Peter for Thai food. Joy always orders enough for 10 people! I did sample most of hers. Lounging around on Patong Beach to sleep off the food. Our guide said Patong Beach is not for families. Drink, Drink, Drunk, Drunk!Read more

Called on Colombo for the last two days. Docked in the main container port that is very busy with the closure of the Suez Canal. Lots of trans loading with alternate routes. Went out on our own the first day in a Tuk-Tuk. Today went on the organized Viking tour with a knowledgeable guide. Columbo has charming older buildings built during the British rule and amazing temples.Read more
