    Santa Barbara

    Beautiful sunny day in Santa Barbara. We visited the mission with two towers (the only one with two) and the Court House. The Court House has a bell tower and working chimes. We were lucky enough to be climbing the bell tower stairs when the bells went off. Beautiful murals on all 4 walls of the court room. Nice leisurely stroll down State street with many places to shop, dine and drop in for a beer or coffee. Stopped a couple of local breweries to experience their beers and they were very tasty.
    We did not dock at Santa Barbara and used the tinder boat to shuttle to shore and back. One of the tinder boats had a seal try to jump onboard - Bet that was a surprise...!
    Back on board we checked out the ship layout, the gym, visited the Spa for a hot and cold experience and a relaxing time laying on the heated rock lounge chairs.
    Looking forward to all the at sea activities tomorrow after a good night's rest.    Leia mais

    Our first day at sea was just getting used to the ship layout and putting the finishing touches on where all the stuff we brought with in the room. And as usual, we have too much stuff....
    Dinner in the Restaurant was a nice change from the World Buffet. Today was a rough day at sea with high winds, so we got our 'sea legs' walking around the ship, in the gym on treadmills and in the Spa for some hot and cold treatments.Leia mais

    Sea Day Jan 12th

    Our second day at sea and starting to do more of the on-board activities.
    We had our first Cooking Class from 9:30 for just over 3 hours. We prepped the veggies, herbs and made friends doing it. Was a small group of 10 in the area outside of Manfredi's. The menu was Callolo Soup, Pork Medallions and Spices Pound Cake. We did prep for the pork marinade and herbs for the soup. Our chef / instructor did a lot of helping out and 'improving' our chopped ingredients. The induction heating and pans was wonderful and something to consider adding to the kitchen since there is no heated surface, just the pan.
    We then ate the food prepared for the meal with good wine and a lot of conversation. Penny and Roger were there from trivia the day before. We met David and Maggie who were from Cape May. We are meeting them for dinner tomorrow.
    Afternoon was another gym and spa time, then a shower
    We attended an interactive lecture on world travel and then a Magic show in the main theater. Who knows how the magic works, but was a mystery how his Instagram account could contain the answer to the trick...

    Sea Day Jan 13th

    Another day at sea. Was rough seas and high winds so the ship was rocking around. Testing our 'sea legs' again... Now we know why there are handrails all over the ship or something to hold on to.
    Played Bag-O / Cornhole in the morning. They have it every day and it gets competitive. The cruise director and crew also play. Our team did not win. Obviously someone cheated.
    Trivia again at noon and we won! Only because Penny knew all the food questions. Roger and Penny were our partners again today.
    Afternoon was the gym treadmill and the spa hot, cold, hot cold then jacuzzi. Seems like we do this every day. Trying to exercise to avoid exploding due to all the excellent food on the ship.
    Dinner with David and Maggie in the restaurant for a lot of conversation about all of use, then the nightly theater of duet songs by the ship's entertainment. The Viking band and entertainers.
    Off to bed for some rest and more rocking back and forth with the waves.    Leia mais

    More high winds and rough seas today, so we are weaving around all over the place down the hallways. Making good use of the handrails.
    Played Bag-O / Cornhole in the morning. This bunch gets pretty competitive. They change up the game to make things interesting like throwing the bags while up on the grand staircase or throwing across to the hole instead of straight on.
    Tried just the two of us at Trivia today and found that we could use all the help we can get on some of the questions. Out of 35 total points we scored 17.
    Normal lunch, then the gym again and the spa for some hot and cold rooms then the jacuzzi.
    Dinner with Roger and Penny was a lot of conversation and story telling.
    There was a LGBTQ gathering in the lounge and surprisingly there were about a dozen couples that showed up as well as a couple of the crew members. Was fun to meet and greet and get to know other onboard. Many of the couples haven been together 20+ years just like us.
    Port talk introduced us to our Hawaii excursions. First day for use is a Hawaiian Luau and the second day is a hike to the top of Diamond Head. We are both looking forward to some time on land.
    Evening entertainment was a former 8-year Jersey Boys headliner from Vegas. He was very entertaining and as usual, you have to get to the main theater 30 minutes early to get a good seat.

    Sea Day Jan 15th

    Much calmer seas today, so not nearly as much staggering around on the ship. We attended the morning coffee talk with the cruise director Avine and the singer from the Jersey Boys show. He talked very frankly about the industry and his path through entertainment.
    We had an hour with the gym personal trainer and he showed us exercises and the equipment and how to use them correctly for posture and the best results. We then did a set ourselves and probably over-did it. We'll find out tomorrow morning how sore we are since neither of us has done any weight training...
    Then trivia again at noon, and we came in second, but it was not a good score since the questions were all about Hawaii, the islands and their history. Guess we should have attended some of those history talks / lectures they had the day before.
    The winds started back up so our attempts at ping pong and putt-putt golf did not go well at all, so we just decided to walk 4 laps around the ship which is one mile.
    We had Afternoon Tea with Roger and Penny.
    Then a presentation on turtles and how they are in the wild and also a racy video of 2 turtles getting it on in the water.
    THEN the BEST part of the day was with Penny teaching us how to play cribbage. She is a very patient teacher and we made it through a 200 point game, which I (Rob) won.
    Dinner and going to stay in the room to watch the 2nd show from the magician on TV. Then early to bed to get ready for our first day on land in a week!

    O'ahu - Hawaii

    First day on land in a while, so that felt good. Arrived in Honolulu and then a trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial and viewed the sunken Arizona Memorial. Walked around the park and took in the history of all the devastation from the initial 2 waves on Pearl.
    We had a driving tour of the city and walked to the Honolulu Brewing Company where we had a couple of beers, lunch and Scott bought a tank top as a souvenir.
    In the evening we attended an authentic Hawaiian Luau with the roast pig, poi and dancers. They did traditional hula dancing and with fire sticks. We had special VIP access, so we had table service rather than having to go thru the buffet line. Our escort from Viking was really great, he was funny and played good music on the bus, which really helped to pass the time (since it was almost an hour drive there and back).    Leia mais

    O'ahu - Hawaii

    Got up early for a hike to the top of Diamond Head, The hike was not too long in length, only 1.6 miles however it had a change in elevation of over 600 feet. The terrain started easy with paved walk, but then became more rugged with lots of steps. At the top there were great views of the ocean as well as Honolulu. Also there are remnants of a military bunker. The way back down was thru the bunker and a tunnel. Back on the ship we hit the gym for some body work and the hot and cold sauna to make the muscles feel better.
    The afternoon movie was the original Around the World in 80 Days (3 hours long). It was in the main theatre.
    Dinner outside under the sunset and stars as we sail again for another 5 days to French Polynesia. The evening show was performed by the assistant cruise director Michael. After the show we went up to the sports deck to view the stars.    Leia mais

    Another day at sea and our usual routine. Breakfast, playing cornhole, trivia (and we did not win again, but it's fun), lunch, gym with treadmill and weights, spa with hot and cold then jacuzzi.
    Dinner and a show with the new entertainer, Lindsay Hamilton. She was really good. Veteran West End entertainer. And she was funny also.
    Late night star gazing with the resident astronomer that can see things with the naked eye that I would never see. My SkyView phone app helped out a lot with that.
    Then off to bed for some rocking around with the ship motion...    Leia mais

    Another sea day. Scott was up early and hit the gym at 6am. Taught Roger and Penny how to play Farkle. Dinner in the restaurant with Maggie, David and another couple. Then went to Torshaven to listen to some music and for a cocktail before bed.
    We took the Behind the Scenes Tour of the ship. We toured the lower decks, kitchen, storage lockers for all the tons of food and beverages, control room where there were screens everywhere to monitor the ship functions and engines. They said that there were over 400 cameras on board to monitor the ship. The kitchen was spotless and floor to ceiling stainless steel. The laundry had massive washing machines and a special $1M machine that dries, presses and folds the sheets in one step. There were offices for operations, IT, HR and what you would see in any office building, just smaller. They took us down the corridor that runs the entire ship, called I-95. It is amazing all that goes on below the floors that we see to run the ship. There are over 400 crew members that support the ship of 950 guests.    Leia mais

    Sea day. Morning breakfast outside then the Cornhole tournament again, We did ok at trivia and did not win since there are groups of about 12 people with about 1000 years of experience.     Another sea day. Breakfast, and my second attempt at art work. Scott was not interested in making his own art. I am going to make a 3D picture box which will be finished tomorrow. Lunch with Roger and Pennie again, then Pennie started teaching me to knit. I did not do well with my first lesson, but Pennie said to be patient and she's going to help me out more tomorrow. Crossed the equator today at little after 6pm.
    Another trip to the gym in the afternoon and soon we will be all buff from the weight training. Then the spa, a quick dinner and late night show with Lindsay Hamilton as the performer. She is a great singer and throws a lot of humor and crowd interaction into the show.    Leia mais

    Another day at sea. Early trip to the gym. Skipped breakfast, more Cornhole tournament and trivia.
    In the morning I met the sweetest lady in the Atrium. Her name is Barbara and is 88 years old. She has a very quiet southern voice and is always around the ship with her leggings, skirt and walking stick. We have seen her many times, so I just introduced myself. One day she was on the treadmill next to Scott. She wasn't setting any speed record, but was out there walking with the rest of us. And she attends the Line Dancing classes. I expect to see a lot more of her and get some great stories along the way... I included her picture.
    Lunch with Roger & Pennie again, and I finished my second work of art watercolor shadow box (photo attached) then some more knitting lessons. I am getting better and she showed me the pearl stitch. Scott signed up for an art class in a few days where you create underwater turtles.
    Back to the gym and spa, then a quick dinner. Prepared for our 2 Bora Bora excursions tomorrow. Backpacks, jackets, camera, etc.
    Then relaxed to the movie See How They Run. Was a really good movie.

    Bora Bora Jan 23rd

    Full day in Bora Bora with 2 excursions to keep us busy and see all the sights we can in one day.
    In the morning we had an open bus tour of the island which took us around the main island road and was 15 miles. Along the way we saw their way of life and how they value the simple things and nothing is really complex. The main challenge is that just about everything has to be brought in by ship, so it's a challenge to build new buildings, fix vehicles and introduce new things. Just about everything is re-used and re-purposed. Many of the resorts were destroyed by the 2010 monsoon and were never rebuilt. The few that were being rebuild were stopped and cancelled due to Covid. It's a shame since the island is such a beautiful resort place to visit.
    We had lunch at a cafe and experienced the cost of living in Bora Bora. Lunch was about $95 US. However, it was really good seafood and MaiTai's.
    In the afternoon we took a boat cruise around the island to see the bungalows that are built in the ocean. They are part of the remaining resorts and vary from $500 to $1500 a night. There are pics of these.
    We saw a plastic bottle floating in the water and went to pick up the trash and when we were near it, it moved away from the boat. we caught up to it and our boat captain lifted it out of the water and it was a fishing buoy with a line, hook and live fish caught on it. He is taking it home for dinner.
    We were the last tinder boat (small shuttle boat from the ship to the shore) back, so they could not leave until our group was back on board.

    Moorea, French Polynesia

    Scott's 50th birthday today! We arrived at the island of Moorea early morning. It was s short distance by sea from Bora Bora. It's Scott's birthday today, so we did well making it a great day and beating his 'fish' story from Bora Bora.
    We headed out for our long excursion to the island on a tinder boat again and met our local guides for almost a full day in the sun and ocean of Moorea. We just wore our water shoes, swimsuits since we would be in the sand and water most of the day.
    They took us around the beautiful blue water coastline while watching for dolphins, turtles and sharks. We did not see any and could not snorkel or get into the ocean due to winds and very strong currents.
    We then went to a beach for lunch and some time there in the ocean. We did not expect to see the birds diving for fish. Scott was in the water with a baby shark, turtle and some small fish. It was amazing how close you can get to them and see through the clear blue water.
    Then back to the ship to relax to get the sand and salt off of us and relax in the hot and cold spa.
    Birthday dinner at 7 in the Italian restaurant on the ship.    Leia mais

    Tahiti

    Visited Tahiti today.
    It is the largest of the French Polynesian islands and not as scenic where we were docked at the other smaller islands. We took a walking tour with our guide to see the gardens, town hall and public market. The market had the freshest fruit, fresh meat and fish and hand made items to buy. We got more apple banana's!! There was also a food court but skipped that just in case of any food 'issues' down the road. We also bought some fresh flowers from a lady with all kinds of flowers we do not have at home. We took those back to the ship and our cabin steward was so kind to find us a vase for them. She is the best!
    Just before returning to the ship we found another micro brewery just across from the ship. Of course, we had to stop in to make sure we sampled another French Polynesian beer for quality control. And they passed. Really good malty lager and a not no hoppy IPA.
    Then back onboard just as it started raining. Just like in the ocean islands, it rains for a short time each day. We just happened to dodge this one, luckily.
    Back on board, we ate and later on saw a show with a local Polynesian 'band' and dancers. It was really good and was a showing of their local instruments, music and formal dance routines.
    Then we left for 5 sea days to New Zealand - yeah....    Leia mais

    Our first sea day and back to our normal routine, just this time with some arts and crafts thrown in. Scott is participating in the water color creation of underwater sea turtles. The picture is the first class and we will finish them tomorrow in another watercolor class.
    Morning gym, cornhole, trivia (only 19 out of 34), art class, gym. I also had another knitting session with my teacher Pennie. She is so patient.
    And our first round of laundry. It only took 4 washers and dryers to get all our dirty clothes done. About 2.5 hours for the laundry, drying, folding and hanging backup. But now all our clothes are done. Our floor has only half the number of guest rooms as the others due to the ship's configuration, but the other full floors are apparently having laundry 'issues' where guests are getting into conflicts over washer and dryer usage. Nothing like and old-people fight breaking out.    Leia mais

    Another sea day with the usual list of daily activities. Scott went to the gym early in the morning, breakfast.
    In the morning they had a competition at the pool for the miniature ship building competition. The guests had to build a ship from things they found around the ship, repurposed or recycled. Each ship had to hold 6 cans of Coke and float in the pool for 30 seconds. It was fun to see all the things people scavenged from around the ship and how creative they were. We talked with the winners before the contest and they actually did a trial run in the big massage / bubble pool in the spa the day before to make sure it would win.
    Then trivia again and another afternoon trip to the gym. I also finished my turtle watercolor and scott finished his rainbow turtle but did not take a picture of it.
    After that we played games with Pennie and Roger, then dinner and a rum tasting before the nightly performance with an electric violin player.    Leia mais

    Today was a different day at sea. We got up and went to the gym, then a coffee talk with the head chef Willie. It was interesting how he has to plan so far in advance to source the huge amount of food to feed 1000 people on board.
    The the highlight of the day was our beginner Sushi class. It took about 3 hours. This class was run by a guest Chef, winner of several sushi competitions. We cut all the ingredients, fish, etc. They made the rice for us in a big rice cooker. It was very interesting how important the rice is and is mixed with vinegar and sugar. We learned how to roll the sushi and then made all the sushi in the pictures. It was a great class since we actually did all the work (except the rice cooking). Then we ate it all for our lunch...
    Afternoon was another round of playing games and more learning to knit.
    There won't be a posting for Jan 29th since we lose that day crossing the International Date Line tonight.    Leia mais

    Sea day with the usual. Morning trip to the gym, breakfast, and cornhole. This time they mixed it up by having us throw from the second level off stairs in the atrium.
    Lunch was a big Polynesian buffet celebrating us crossing the International Date Line. Also we lost Jan 29th when we crossed it..
    The afternoon was some more knitting and then we played a new game - Oh Hell. It is like bridge where you bid and Hearts where you have a trup suit. Was a lot of fun.
    Pre-Dinner drinks with our neighbors and some other LGBT couples, then dinner with Larry and Kurt and a single traveller named Jim.    Leia mais

    Bay of Islands, Waitangi NZ Feb 1st

    Our first day in New Zealand was a full day of experiencing the culture and island. In the morning we started out with the standard excursion taking us through parts of the northern island and some parks. The greenery is beautiful and the smell of fresh flowers and plants is just everywhere. We also visited a curated restroom from a Norwegian artist that retired to the town and built a restroom out of ceramics.
    After our morning excursion we had lunch at a local cafe / pub.
    The afternoon outing was a native Mayorka canoe or catamaran. We actually rowed the boat ourselves to the waterfall. The locals described the issues between the indigenous people and the government. The trip included a lot of local tales and history.
    We were very tired after and ended up in the spa for hot and cold rooms and then played some cards after dinner. Getting ready for another day in New Zealand, just that the ship is now relocating to Auckland.    Leia mais

    Auckland NZ Feb 2nd

    Docked in Auckland New Zealand this morning.
    Got up, breakfast, gym and then since we are docked in port we left the ship and walked down to a supermarket to pick up some sunscreen, local snacks that they told us to try (hokey pokey and pineapple lumps) and some Doritos. Potato chips of any kind are not on the ship. On the way back we found a pub which seemed authentic since none of the chairs matched and it looked like British Pubs we have seen.
    Our afternoon excursion was a guided drive through Auckland and it's shopping, financial, hotel and technology district. Auckland is NZ's largest city with about 1.5 million people. So it's not a huge city. Metropolitan Austin Texas is just over 2 million.
    We had a stop at a famous memorial and had time to enjoy the greenery, marigolds and all the flowers around.
    Then on the their large natural history museum. Scott did not really enjoy this part since he's not really into museums. I walked through the entire museum and took in their history.
    Back to the ship for some card playing and an excellent! dinner at the Chef's Table restaurant on board. Special Japanese menu created by our guest chef on the boat. Then more card playing and cocktails before bed.

    Auckland NZ Feb 3rd

    Our second day in Auckland and we have an afternoon excursion.
    The morning was free time so we did the breakfast, gym, spa, lunch before heading out in the afternoon. Scott has contacted a glass studio owner and we plan on meeting with him to see his local glass art and possibly buy something....
    Back from the excursion north of Auckland to Devonport Village. It is an old Victorian village full of turn of the century houses made of the local tree that is now protected. They are all beautiful Victorian style homes overlooking the bay and ocean. We took the bridge over and the ferry boat back to the ship. We stopped by an artist's glass shop - Peter Raos and purchased a vase (well it is more of a glass) and christmas ornament.
    We took a little walk back to an old Victorian cemetery from the early turn of the century. At the old military cannon facility at the top of the village Scott found a nest of baby birds waiting for their mother to come back and feed them.
    Then we had dinner and a beer at a local pub before taking the ferry back to the mainland and our ship
