    April 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Phew! Have finally booked all accommodation but one for our Camino Portuguese. It's not really in the spirit of the camino to prebook your evening stay but there are four of us and we don't want to take any chances with our accommodation. It also means we can bimble and take our time to reach our accommodation, spend time taping OurJan's feet up 🙄🤣, enjoy a leisurely lunch and maybe even have a paddle in the sea.🤞

Sadly we are incomplete 😒. There are only 4 of us instead of our usual 5 (or more). It won't be the same by any stretch of the imagination but hopefully these posts will cheer our missing peregrino up and we'll be our usual band of pilgrims next year 🙏😘.

  • Thank goodness for Steve and OurJan!

    April 19, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Enjoyed a great long weekend home to celebrate my great niece Amy's 3rd birthday and chat all things camino (now called our Glamino because we've managed to book all but one night's accommodation!) with OurJan and Steve. Thank goodness for them, they checked through all of our accommodation and the route we've planned because I'd managed to book a (lovely!) casa in La Portela instead of in A Portela 🙄🤣. It was only another 100km away 🙄. Thankfully we were able to unbook one and book the other. Now the countdown's begun - just wondering how many more pairs of walking shoes OurJan will try on/buy before the big day 🤪.Read more

  • What's next?

    May 2, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Once again, thank goodness for Steve and OurJan. Yet another accommodation disaster avoided! After plotting our route on maps for each of our stages I noticed we'd be walking backwards at one point. Cue panic 🙄🤣. Thing is, I always do this bit with Julie, who isn't able to join us this year, so a few messages to OurJan and a telephone conversation later... we're sorted 🤞🤞🤞🤣. Well, I think so. We'll soon find out because this time next week we'll be very excited making our ways to Porto and the 🌞 👏👏👏Read more

    Porto bound!

    May 8, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Day 1 of mine and Sid's Pamino, starting in London to make it easier to get to Stansted tomorrow. I'm staying in one of my favourite hotels (Ibis Styles Southwark) which is movie based.
I've enjoyed a lovely wander around somewhere (London, I know, but I'm not sure of the districts🙄) and found some new friends and Pamino inspiration🤗. I've even found the route to Liverpool Street Station for the morning! And I've enjoyed a delicious Vietnamese meal for supper and am now tucked up in bed watching telly - my idea of holiday heaven 🙄🤣.Read more

    Next stop Porto!

    May 9, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After a lovely afternoon and evening in London it was time to get to the station. No problem there, and the train to Stansted (although delayed) was fine. But what to do when I got there? Where was Julie? That was her territory (I'd done my bit planning the accommodation!) and at the airport just followed her around like a lost lamb🙄🤣. It took me quite a while to work out where to go and what to do but I eventually managed to drop my bag and check in somehow! Best bit was spilling my coke in my (home made, rip stop) backpack and killing my Kindle 😲. A blooming expensive coke zero 🙄.
The flight was great - I lucked out by having to swap seats with a child, so I ended up with extra leg room. Then to be greeted at arrivals by OurJan, Steve and Anne and a beer - the first of many, I'm sure!
We found our evening's accommodation and set out for an evening meal. We ate 'overalls' (beef stew according to Google translate) followed by fruit, oh and it came with a bottle of 🍷. All for €8 each 👏👏👏.
A good night's sleep, no snoring (unless it was me!) with lights out by 2200!

    Don't worry, it's only 22.5km!

    May 10, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

    It's funny how 22.5km can turn into 32km!!! 😲🙄🤣
We began by losing our way back to the airport... kilometres later we arrived there ready for coke, coffee and a second breakfast of pastel de nata.
A metro journey into Porto plus a walk to the cathedral meant we didn't start walking until 1030. The day was spent making sure the ocean was to our left (great advice from our absent guide Julie🤗) although it was quite some time before we left the Douro and joined the north Atlantic.
Lunch was spent just short of Matosinhos - I ordered a beef sandwich that came out as beef, egg and chips! Somehow. I managed to eat it 😋 🤣.
22.5km turned into just a few more and then even more... and we finally found our fab accommodation in Angeiras. We had a very nice Pilgrim's menu for €10 and now we're ready for bed and just 22.5km tomorrow. Honest!!!🤣

  • Day 4

And this one really was (22.5km)🤣

    May 11, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

It really was what should have been yesterday! 22.5km (ish)...
We left Angeiras at about 0800 after a pretty good night's sleep. It was nice to have a chalet to ourselves so we could spread out without upsetting anyone else or invading their space. We very quickly found the seaside, turned right, kept the Atlantic on our left, and headed off. It was quite chilly and there was a gentle breeze (more of that later🙄😅) but it was very pleasant walking along the boardwalk towards today's stop, Aguçadoura.
Before too long, though, the wind started to pick up and was slowing us down. After a stop for breakfast at Vila Chi (where Sid and Marcel made an appearance) we headed off again. The wind was dreadful and we were heading straight into it! According to the BBC weather app we were enjoying a 'moderate breeze' of 18 knots (about 33km/hr) but a check on the Portuguese weather app put that into touch - we were fighting winds of 50km/hr, hardly a 'moderate breeze'🤪.
We ventured on though (no choice, we've booked all but one of our accommodation) and stopped for a small beer at Vila do Conde, which is, funnily enough, where Julie, Anne and I got lost last time we were here 🙄🤭. Onwards and upwards (well, flatwards) for lunch at Povoa de Varzim (a long wait for a large wrap) then on again to our accommodation at Aguçadoura. This is a 'guest house' - it's an albergue with towels - and as we're pretty tired we decided to eat in. A good decision😋 Funny how you can walk and talk and eat and talk and still find lots to talk about 🥰🥰🥰. Looking forward to a good night's sleep and a gentle walk of just 22.2kms tomorrow in winds of only 40km/hr - sheer luxury 😆😅🤣

  • Day 5

This wind has been far out at sea...

    May 12, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    'scuse me, Ted Hughes!
I slept like a log last night 😴😴😴. It was great to just stay in and chill and climb into bed (quite literally, I was on the top bunk😅) at about 9.00pm! With no kindle (coke incident🙄) it meant I could just close my eyes and relax, and I did!
We left the 'guest house' at 7.30am after a small first breakfast of left over bread, cheese and watermelon; to walk so early was fabulous. We walked along the coast for a few kms before turning inland, which was brilliant as the wind miraculously disappeared 😆. Walking on the coastal boardwalks has been lovely if windy, but inland it's all cobbles that aren't so comfy or easy on your feet. After 7km we reached Apuila to find our second breakfast but we were on the wrong side of town (all the cafés were at the coast, we weren't), so another 3.5km to Fao it was! A gorgeous gluten and lactose free quiche set us up and OurJan definitely had a spring in her step after that🤭.
Another stop at Marinhas called for a very welcome beer and some salty crisps and then it was just a few kms to Antas, where we're staying.
Somewhere along the way (in Esposende, actually) I realised I'd developed a small blister on a little toe so stopped to dress it. No worries!
It was good to see, along the way, that the Portuguese have questionable garden furniture taste as well 😜.
When we reached Antas OurJan asked me to look at her blisters 😨. One of her little toes is very poorly 😕 so perhaps the new walking shoes aren't so perfect 😉. Next pair, OurJan!
This 'guest house' is fantastic. It has all mod cons, a fridge full of beer and a pizza delivery driver who speaks English - result!
It's bed again at 9.00pm, hurrah, and a 25km walk to Carreço tomorrow (although OurJan might well be taking a taxi!)

Red vs Blue - what to do?

    May 13, 2023 in Portugal

Not Liverpool versus Everton, although I have to say if it was red vs blue, Everton would win every time! 😉 If only...
Just 3 of us walking today. Very sensibly, OurJan decided to have a rest day for her toes, so she stayed in Antas for the morning and took a taxi to our accommodation in Carreço at lunchtime.
We decided to walk the 25km to Carreço and set off at 0730 with a bit of oomph (only a bit...)😆. It was a fab walk through old small towns and villages following the blue route until we came to a decision point. Red (which would take us closer to the coast, which we were missing) or continue inland on blue? A joint decision to follow the red route meant it wasn't my fault 🤭😜😅. The red line on Google maps led us along some wonderful, ancient tracks and into small villages with no shops or cafés, so when we fell across a small café we fell into it for our first breakfast! Just one croissant and one 'thing' was left for us to eat, so we cut each into 3 and shared them. It was pretty much pure sugar, but we needed it! I have a brilliant 'builder's bum' photo if you'd like to see it! We continued, meeting an Irish couple walking the other way and stopping for a chat, and thank goodness I checked our route because we were well off track 🙄😅. Where's Julie when you (desperately) need her? So backtrack number 1 of the day...
We finally reached the beaches and stopped for a very early lunch (or second breakfast) of cheese and ham omelettes (ordered), which arrived as cheese and ham toasties 🤭. But they were delicious and much appreciated!
We walked on and actually found a boardwalk 👏👏👏 so we could walk next to the ocean. Fabulous! But said boardwalk ended abruptly and the route (had we followed it) went for kilometres over the dunes!!! No way!!! So, backtrack number 2... Unfortunately, this meant we had to walk the rest of the way to Viana do Castela on the road, which was very tiring and sometimes quite hairy! But we arrived in Viana after about 22kms and sat down for a much needed beer.
It didn't take us long to agree to a taxi which took us to OurJan in Carreço. We're staying at a lovely casa, although the rules are a little strange 🤪. We had to be out of the kitchen by 7.00pm (no problem) but at 6.58pm the lady of the house yelled "no more cooking!" 😆. This suited us as we'd eaten and I'd just burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave 🤣🤣🤣. We retreated to our rooms, house stinking of burned popcorn, and are now preparing ourselves for Eurovision (popcorn-less, despite having 2 more bags in my backpack, but I'm not risking the wrath of her ladyship 😲🤭🤣).
Moral of today's story? Everton. Every time! 🤣

  • Day 7

    A beautiful day!

    May 14, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Wow! We've had a wonderful day's walk, a real 'camino' day. It began with a Prince chocolate biscuit for breakfast and ended with a delicious bottle of red!
Our accommodation last night was very nice although we were all cold during the night, and not one of us got up to put the extra blanket on the bed 🙄. Our host was very helpful, giving us directions to rejoin the camino path which gradually led us uphill and through eucalyptus forests - cue more bird song and babbling brooks 💗.
The paths we took were inclined but gentle and we were able to take it easy for the whole day, knowing we'd already booked our night's sleep at an apartment in Caminha.
Our second breakfast (if you could count one biscuit as your first🙄) was a tuna roll for elevenses - I was hungry!!!
It was onwards (and probably downwards by now) towards Caminha with another stop for dessert, which was supposed to be ice cream but ended up as a Pastel de Nata - very nice 😋.
We walked for a few kilometres on the coast, which was fabulous. There was a good breeze that cooled us down and we even found a small herd of goats (a couple of them fighting over a female!), a flock of sheep and a few horsey things on the beach path!
Caminha was on the horizon although, as usual, the last few kilometres were the longest 😩😅. A beer spurred us on, though, and we soon found our accommodation which is pretty fab! Beefburgers and chips for our evening meal rounded the day off perfectly. Well, perhaps not quite... Our host left us the most delicious bottle of red wine- I can honestly say I've never tasted anything like it! 🤗🤗🤗
