    Beijing

    16 мая, Китай ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We arrived in Beijing Thursday evening, two days before our tour began. Friday morning we set out to explore on foot the surroundings near our hotel and experienced a wee bit of culture shock. There is no internet, no signs in English, the subway system is a massive spider web all depicted with Chinese characters only, no one at the hotel speaks any English, there is no concierge or street maps available, and there is little recognizable street food. We returned to our hotel at noon and booked a guided tour for the next day. As seasoned as we are, we will need help to navigate this city to make the most of our free time. We spent the remainder of the day reading, resting and catching up on laundry.Читать далее

    The Summer Palace

    17 мая, Китай ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We travelled in style today, exploring with a private guide. What a beautiful city; clean, layers of ring roads, beautiful flowers along the streets, flowing traffic, interesting architecture and colourful signs and lanterns. Our first stop was the magnificent Summer Palace, built by the Emperor in 1760 for his mother, the Dowager Queen. Summer Palace consists of the Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, and is a large landscape garden.Читать далее

    The Lama Temple, Beijing

    17 мая, Китай ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This afternoon we visited the Lama Temple, the largest and most renowned Tibetan Buddhist temple outside of Tibet. What a magnificent site, which highlights five main halls with their side halls, Buddhist sculptures, stone carvings, and tablets in different languages. The buildings are so colourful and ornate, The unique architectural style integrates the architectural art of the Han, Manchu and Mongolian nationalities. The Temple of Heaven Park

    18 мая, Китай ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Inside the park we visited the The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, The Red Throne Steps Bridge, aka the Danbi bridge, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest was stunning and features 28 pillars symbolizing the 28 constellations used in ancient Chinese agriculture. The 4 central pillars represent the four seasons, the 12 inner pillars symbolize the months of the year and the 12 outer pillars represent the traditional Chinese hours, collectively embodying the 24 solar terms. This hall was used for ceremonies praying for good harvests during the first lunar month. the Danbi Bridge is higher on the north side than the south,, symbolizing that the sky is higher than the earth. The Imperial Vault of Heaven is where signs of the Gods are placed on regular days . During ceremonies, these signs are moved to the Circular Mound Altar. The Circular Mound Altar consists of 3 levels, each with 9 steps. In the center of the top most level is the Heavenly Heart Stone, surrounded by fan-shaped stones representing the God of Heaven living in the line levels of heaven.Читать далее

    The Great Wall of China

    19 мая, Китай ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We set off at 6am to travel about 80 kms to get to Matianyu, one of the best preserved sections of the Great Wall. After two shuttle buses and a gondola, we reached the starting point. It certainly was a “pinch me”moment when we took our first steps along the iconic wall that winds along 5 kms of mountain ridges and through the 22 watchtowers on this section. The Great Wall, stretches 6000km west from the mountain ridges north of Beijing. It was originally constructed to protect Chinese empires from nomadic northern tribes.Читать далее

    A Royal Feast

    21 мая, Китай ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Our G for good moment happened today as we experienced a feast fit for royalty at a local restaurant near the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horse Mausoleum. The lazy susan on our table seemed magical as one dish after another appeared before us and was so quickly shared that I had no time for photographs. There were veggie dishes, breads, crepes, pork, fish, tofu, chicken, and to top it all off, a desert of sweet potato covered in sugar and a slice of watermelon. We were delighted to get a phot of our chef and hostess and to pick up a handmade souvenir to help support them. The food in China has been a constant highlight, So fresh and delicious with plentiful variety.Читать далее

    The Terracotta Army

    21 мая, Китай ⋅ ☁️ 35 °C

Today we learned about the history and significance of the Terracotta Army, aka Terracotta Warriors and Horses, a super large collection of life-size terra cotta sculptures in battle formations, reproducing the mega imperial guard troops of Emperor Qui Shi Huang (259-210BC), the first unified dynasty of Imperial China. It is the most significant archeological excavation of the 20th century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a site to behold! What remains of the terracotta army are three, trench-like pits of soldiers, horses, and chariots. (A fourth pit has been found empty, probably remaining unfinished when Qin Shihuangdi died unexpectedly at age 49 in 210 BCE.)

In these pits stand approximately 8,000 soldiers, positioned according to rank, aligned in battle formations facing east. Each one is life-sized and unique. Although the main structure of the body was created in an assembly-line fashion, added details in the faces and hairstyles, as well as clothing and arm positioning, make no two terracotta soldiers alike. When originally placed, each soldier carried a weapon. While many of the bronze weapons remain, many others appear to have been stolen in antiquity. Pictures often show the terracotta soldiers in an earthy color, but each soldier had once been intricately painted. A few remnant paint chips remain; however, much of colours faded when the soldiers are unearthed by archaeologists. In addition to the terracotta soldiers, there are full-sized, terracotta horses and several war chariots.

    Xi’an City Wall

    21 мая, Китай ⋅ ☁️ 37 °C

Xi’an City wall, also known as the Fortifications of X’an, is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, as well as being one of the largest military defensive systems in the world. The wall is 12 meters high and 14 kilometres long. As one of the city’s cultural and historic landmarks, many people walk or bike around the perimeter to enjoy the interesting and different views of the old and new parts of Xi’an. We were disappointed that the biking option was not available to anyone over 65. Boo! It was 40 degree out today so we waited until 6pm to take our stroll and walked for one hour before we left for yet another magnificent evening show. Gotta love the women who dress up in China, as they sure add colour to the landscape and love to be photographed.Читать далее

Wild Goose Pagoda, aka Dayan Pagoda

    22 мая, Китай ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is a well-preserved ancient building and a holy place for Buddhists. It was originally built to house Buddhist scriptures brought back from India and the pagoda played a significant role in the spread of Buddhism in China. The Da ci’en Temple which surrounds the pagoda is a beautiful complex of ancient halls and courtyards, large Statues of Buddha, and halls dedicated to Buddhist teachings. Best of all, it is peaceful and beautiful area to explore, offering insight into the spiritual side of Xi’an.Читать далее

Tina led us on a quick orientation walk past the Tianfu square in the center of the city, pointing out banks, pharmacies, shops where we could get rabbit head or pigs knuckles, the local delicacies, should we wish to try them, as well as souvenir shops. We all assembled for a special Hotpot supper, which is the Chinese version of fondue. One more sleep and we will see the pandas.Читать далее

Here a Panda, There a Panda!

    23 мая, Китай ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

The day we have all been waiting for has arrived! We have a date with the pandas at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, created to provide an ideal breeding environment for these adorable, endangered creatures. We learned about their life cycle and the habitat and enjoyed strolling through the grounds, around the lake and through the museum. As an added bonus, we also saw another rare species, the little-known red panda. We got there early and the crowds were light so we had a lot of chances to spot the pandas before it got too hot and they retreated deep into the bamboo forest. Lucky us, we also saw a mom with her young cub too.Читать далее

Living Like a Local in Chengdu

    23 мая, Китай ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We filled our afternoon exploring more of Chengdu and acting like the locals. We ate a delicious Chinese meal at a favourite restaurant of the locals and then visited the Narrow and Wide Alley’s District, where something exciting is always happening, before moving on to the People’s Park, a popular place for the locals to enjoy the outdoors. The park features an artificial lake, gardens, tea houses where you will find the locals playing mahjong, and a dating corner where their is a section for eligible girls and another for eligible boys. Our guide translated one of the dating profiles and we all giggled about how old fashioned the process seemed but it must work as there is reportedly a high turnover of contact sheets! Our group is separating tomorrow with 8 going on to Shanghai and 6 of us going on to Tibet and Nepal. We met our transfer guide Alex and our new travel buddies. We are sad to leave some of our new friends behind and excited to get to know our new travel mates and continue our adventures.Читать далее

    The People’s Park

    23 мая, Китай ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

There is a lot happening at the People’s Park in Chengdu on any given day. The park features an artificial lake, gardens, tea houses where you will find the locals playing mahjong, people dancing, and we got invited to join in, people gathering to socialize on a park bench, people picnicking and an old fashioned dating corner where there is a section for eligible girls and another for eligible boys. Our guide translated one of the dating profiles and we all giggled about how old fashioned the process seemed but it must work as there is reportedly a high turnover of contact sheets!Читать далее
