    October 5, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

We had a very brief stop at the last station in Iowa. I could see a little bit of the original fort but it wasn't a great view. So I went back on the train because we were going to pass right by the fort as we pulled out of the station and I got a great seat in the observation car on the correct side. Just as we were leaving the station, a freight train pulled alongside and paced us as we left Iowa and crossed the Mississippi. So I didn't see the fort up close after all.Read more

  • Weds Oct 5, 3:30 pm: Repacking

    October 5, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

We are out half an hour out of Chicago so I took the opportunity to repack my two suitcases so that one has the stuff I will need for the next two days getting to Toronto, and the other has everything else and can be stored at the train station overnight instead of taking to the hotel.

Of course it was only after I completely finished the repacking that I realized that I had put all the stuff I needed to take to the hotel in the suitcase without wheels, which is not optimal! Okay, I guess I have a little more repacking to do.

  • Thu Oct 6, 12:00 pm: Did NOT feed birds

    October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

After a pretty good night's sleep and a very nice shower, I headed off for a bout of site seeing. I stopped for a bagel and coffee, but it took me a while to find a bench to sit at. I ended up at another Chicago Temple. This one a temple to water engineering.

There was a very stern sign: Do NOT Feed the Birds, so I felt a little bit guilty when some capers fell off my bagel onto the ground. BeforeI knew it, there was a bird coming by picking at everything in front of me. However, I guess that capers do not count as bird food. This bird tried to eat that caper about five times. He would peck at it and then throw it away. Then he'd see it sitting on the ground and try the whole thing all over again. Eventually, he finally gave up.

By the end, I felt even more guilty for pranking the damn bird

  • Thu Oct 6, 1:00 pm: John Hancock Tower

    October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Next stop was the John Hancock Tower. The entire 94th floor is an observation platform that is over a thousand feet above street level. You get an amazing view of the entire city from an angle you don't normally see. The Willis Tower( (formally Sears Tower) is taller, but you evidently don't get a full 360° view.

They had the special area that you paid extra to go to where you stand facing the window and then the entire ledge of the building tilts out and now you're facing down at the street. It doesn't tilt that far, but it feels far when you're the one looking down.

Since that's the sort of thing that Russell would pay very good money to NOT do. It was the perfect time for me to experience it when he wasn't there.

  • Thu Oct 6, 5:00 pm: Family Zoom

    October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

On my way to Union Station, I picked up a salad for dinner. Food on the train has been really tasty, but not a whole lot of fresh vegetables.

For the past 2 years , every week my family has gotten together for a several hour zoom session where we also play dominoes online against each other. I don't think any of us have missed more than one week in these years so I wasn't going to mess up my streak. Union Station has a really nice lounge for sleeper car passengers, so I was able to set up a good spot. And not that I'm keeping track, but I won the game this week.Read more

    Leg 4: Chicago-> Buffalo

This is a 12 hour night train. It's the first time I've been on this type of sleeper car, but I will put all the nitty gritty details about Amtrak cars in a separate post so those of you who couldn't care less can skip it.

I will say that this train goes both Boston and New York so it splits into two at some point. Which means some of the sleeper cars are at the very end of the train, and some are at the very beginning. My sleeper car was the last passenger car on the train but that means I was only two cars away from the dining car.

  • Thu Oct 6: Amtrak trivia

    October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Amtrak has two kinds of trains: Superliner and Viewliner. The Superliner cars are double-decker and run mostly, but not exclusively, on Western routes. The Viewliner are single story cars. Evidently the New York station tunnel is too short to accommodate double decker cars. So any route that goes to New York must use the Viewliner cars

This is my first time on a Viewliner car and I got one of the newly remodeled ones instead of the older cars. Since the Viewliiner car is a single story, the rooms are taller than the Superliner rooms. Which means there's more room, and even a window, for the person in the upper bunk. Also, the upper bunk itself doesn't tilt out of the wall. It raises and lowers in a level fashion, kind of like an elevator.

The older Viewliner roommates had the toilet and a sink in them. But the new ones just have a sink and the toilet has been replaced with a hard shelf that you can use as a step when you're climbing up to the upper bunk. There is also an area to store luggage on a shelf above the door, over the hallway. But it's really hard to maneuver a suitcase into that space, so it's easier just to lower the upper bunk all the way and put your extra luggage on that, if you're traveling alone.

The sink is kind of cool in that there's no drain in the bottom So when you tilt it back up into the vertical position, all the water drains out the back.

One really weird thing about this room, was that even though it was all fully remodeled, including modern climate controls, and it looks like it could even be completely new construction, the soap dish at the back of the sink was extremely rusted. I really don't know if they installed a new sink unit and then put a rusty soap dish back in or what.

  • Thu Oct 6, 11:00 pm: Free nightcap

    October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Shortly after we left Chicago we entered Indiana and transitioned to Eastern Time so we gained another hour.

Along with the free meals, Amtrak includes one alcoholic beverage with dinner for each sleeper car passenger. Since this train left too late to serve any meals, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that we could go down to the dining car and get a free drink before bed.

The dining car on this train only has one level, so instead of the kitchen being below and the dining tables above, the dining tables and the kitchen are all in the same area. This means the kitchen can't quite accommodate the variety that we got on previous trains. I'm only on board for breakfast, so it won't affect me that much.

  • Fri Oct 7, 7:30 am: Erie, PA

    October 7, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

As I slept, we passed through Indiana and Ohio and I awoke to the announcement that we were in Erie, PA. This is the one and only stop in Pennsylvania. Next stop is Buffalo New York where I'm getting off. So I need to go get breakfast and get myself all packed up and ready to go.

Breakfast was OK, but it seemed more similar to airline food, while the previous trains felt more like a real restaurant that was moving.

They were doing some work on the tracks, so they couldn't pull the train up to the platform. We had to stop on a different track, and then walk across the tracks to get to the platform. Which means they offloaded the baggage for us., so that we could use both hands for stability.

My red bag was the same color, and a very similar shape, to the laundry bags they use for the bedding on the train, so it almost got left behind because they thought it wasn't a passenger's bag.

But it all worked out in the end. I have a 7 hour layover, so I'm going to spend the first couple of those hours getting all caught up on this blog.

  • Fri Oct 7, 1:00 pm: Buffalo Scenes

    October 7, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

After I got all caught up on the travel blog. I decided to take a cab to downtown Buffalo. It's about a 15 minute drive away and there is next nothing by this train station that I arrived at. Ironically, Buffalo has two train stations. This one is the one out in the suburbs. The train from Chicago doesn't go to the other station. Which is too bad because that would have been a much better station to hang out at for hours.

Buffalo was kind of an interesting place. It didn't feel like a city but rather a very large town. A lot of statues and monuments that feel like the sort of thing you find in a small town square.

For future reference, I probably should have just taken my luggage with me when I went downtown and stored it at a hotel near the other train station. Then I could have just boarded the train there and not had to pay me $50 to cab back.

You can go up to the observation deck at the top of the City Hall. It's 28 stories high, which is enough to give you a bird's-eye view of Buffalo.

The City Hall interior is also very impressive. But I was desperately searching for a bathroom so I only took a cup of shots.Read more

    Leg 5: Buffalo -> Niagara

There was only one other passenger getting on in Buffalo for this train, but about 50 people getting off. It took quite a while to offload all those people and their luggage and help them clamber across the tracks. Then the other woman boarding and I had to walk through the train about four cars to get to the business class section. When we got there, this other passenger took one look at us and said, "Are we in the station already? I'm supposed to get off!" I'm thinking, "Lady, we've been here about 15 minutes. I know they have calling and announcing the station. What planet are you on?"Read more

  • Fri Oct 7, 5:00 pm: Niagara Falls

    October 7, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

So here is the process for crossing the border at Niagara Falls on Amtrak.

First the train stops at the American side. And we wait for a while.

Then we cross the river into Canada.

The border agents and Via Rail agents come on the train. Via Rail is the Canadian analog of Amtrak.

Then we all get off the train, with our luggage, and go into the customs shed to declare our stuff and get our passports examined.

Then we go into a waiting room until everyone is processed.

Then we get back on the EXACT SAME TRAIN. Except now all the conductors are Via Rail personnel and the signs in the cafe are all Via Rail and so is the stuff for sale.

Oh, and the wifi no longer works, but I do have working cell data.
