Füssen - a historic resort town

I had a great 2 nights here. It’s a great spot to base myself for a few days in this beautiful part of the world. The main attraction here are the castles and the lakes and I ticked off both of those - 5 star scenery. My hotel was so cute too. It was only 3 star but felt so much better than any 3 star hotel I’d stayed in before. The only downside of the area is the price tag! It’s expensive here! Food and drink are crazily priced. I paid $8 AUD for a small coke at lunch the other day.
While I spent most of my time out in the countryside I did explore the old town briefly for dinner and lunch on seperate days. It’s a cute town centre with the obvious old town characteristics. Clock tower ✅, church ✅ castle looking down from above ✅, narrow pedestrian streets filled with cafe umbrellas ✅ another church ✅.
I did manage to register my walking speed on a speed check on one of the smaller streets of town. 6km/h and a smiley face from the machine. Glad I wasn’t speeding while walking 😂
That said, after 4 nights of no air conditioning anywhere, I needed a good night sleep so this afternoon checked out early (that confused the hotel to no end) and headed up to Munich for the night. It’s not the first time I’ve left somewhere early to get some sleep. Thom and I left Vienna early to escape the heat on a previous trip. While it is an extra expense, I’ve learned that feeling good is more important. Having some flexibility and room for spontaneous plans is also a plus. Next stop - Munich.Читать далее

An oversharing gay night out 🏳️🌈🧖♂️

This was originally going to be a private post, but I decided to be more open and make it public. Only needs to be private if I feel shame about it, which I don’t think I want to feel that way anymore (thanks to the Catholic Church for that inbuilt shame and guilt!).
I went to the gay neighbourhood or the ‘gaybourhood’ as I like to call them
in Munich tonight to check out the local scene. Odd considering I don’t check out the Melbourne scene. Anyway I got on a tram just as a severe thunderstorm hit. It was pissing down with rain when I got to my stop so bolted across the road and stopped under the first umbrellaed restaurant to get my bearings.
While I’d planned to walk up and down the street to see what was about, given the rain I stoped here. Luckily for me it was a place I wanted to check out anyway. Hotel Deutsche Eiche is a gay hotel, restaurant and sauna. I’ve never seen a sauna and a restaurant together before but I decided to stop here for a drink and dinner, then check out the sauna later.
Feeling in the mood for a cold beverage after a long day of cycling and swimming I got a mojito and boy was it strong. Either that or just on an empty stomach it went to my head. Having eaten way too many big meals in German I ordered a turkey salad - which ended up being huge! So much for a light meal.
Despite being a gay hotel the restaurant was pretty mixed in its clientele. On the TV was playing the Olympic swimming and gymnastics. On point for the gays 😉. One table of American girls were complaining when it went off briefly (gurl - that tv was not on for you love).
Ok so if you don’t want to go inside a gay sauna, tap out here. I’d seen a review of this place online as a history part of Munich’s LGBTIQ+ culture and was keen to check it out. Inside the staff were a little rude, but anyway, once with my locker key I changed into the towel and wandered about. It was dead! Supposed to have capacity for 300, there were less than a dozen people here, including several who were asleep snoring away.
The complex spans across the basements of several buildings and is a bit of a labyrinth. Upstairs is the wet area and downstairs is a maze and lots of cabins. You can rent the cabins in 5hr blocks so if you need a place to have a nap when in Munich, it’s an affordable option. Given I had a lovely hotel room I don’t bother with this. There are also areas if you’re into some kinkier actions - like being tied to a cross (use your imagination there). I passed on that.
The wet area was as good as any other spa/sauna in terms of its facilities. A hot tub, massive steam room complete with dark room and maze as well as showers inside the steam room. So refreshing to have a cool shower while surrounded by steam. Also a massive dry sauna and a couple of smaller steam rooms. The shower area included hot and cold options, including one of those bucket water drops. All very nice to just chill and relax in. Sure having some eye candy to look at too helps (but that was lacking today).
Another section had heated relaxation chairs and up on the roof was a semi sundeck (but given it was night didn’t bother with that). There was also a bar and lounge area and weirdly you charge it all to your locker and then pay when you leave. Water was not free which is frustrating given all the hot environments mean you should really keep hydrated.
All the ‘action’ if you can call it that with really only 6 guys there (the other 6 were asleep in various parts of the maze 😂) was in the dark room of the steam room. Nothing there for me but I can imagine this place being active when busy. It’s an interesting quirk of gay culture that if you want, you can just go to a place, have sex with as few or many guys as you want and leave.
The stems from times where being gay was not acceptable in the community and the gay community needed safe places to meet like minded guys (safer than beats). While that need fortunately isn’t there as much (depending on where you are) the saunas remain a part of the community. Not for everyone, but that’s like anything really.
I only stayed about 1.5hrs before calling it a night having sweated out my Mojito and headed back to my air conditioned hotel. I got a compliment on my Aussiebum’s from a very stereotypical young German (blond, blue eyes) guy on the way out. I’ll take that as a win, although note to self - don’t eat a giant salad before a sauna session as I was so bloated I looked 9 months pregnant.
For obvious reasons there are no photos of here, but there is a pic of the pregnant belly including (but lovely) salad.Читать далее

Nymphenburg Palace is no Versailles

Last time I was in Munich (March 2015) it was the end of winter, cold and I spent most of my stay exploring the old town. On this short stay I decided to venture out to Nymphenburg Palace… cause well, nymphs right? Taking the tram out there after a little sleep in I bought the multiple palace ticket allowing me full access to the complex.
The main palace building was a little underwhelming to be honest. The main hall was nice and all, but with sparse decoration it was just a bit bland. Like once you’ve walked the mirrored hall in Versailles the bar is set pretty high on what your palace should look like. The palace was also very hot as the Germans think air conditioning destroys everything, so instead it’s full of humid air and sweaty bodies.
One interesting room was the Ludwing’s gallery of beauties. He commissioned the room to be full of paintings of beautiful women from all classes of life. It was open to the public back then - I guess a tinder of its time?
The gardens were more like fields which were relaxing and had nice little streams and big statement piece canals and lakes. Very relaxing to wander through and even spotted some small deer grazing in the fields.
I visited 3 other ‘castles’ on the grounds which were just small houses really. One had a bath the size of a swimming pool in its basement. Another was to take rest while walking the grounds. Such the life of a royal.
After a couple or hours wandering I was hungry (bordering on hangry) so left the grounds and make a bee line to the nearest cafe. Speaking of bees - I thought we humans were killing them all? They are however in abundance in Germany and have been attracted to my sunscreen, chasing me all over the place.
Now time for some cheesecake and a drink before heading back into the old town.Читать далее

Lufthansa to Romania & taxi to my hotel

“Is there a Starbucks here” asks a very stereotypical younger American guy, complete with baseball cap worn backwards to one of the Lufthansa lounge staff. The lounge guy, trying ever so hard not to laugh in his face points to the coffee machine and says “No”. The American asks “What about anywhere in the airport”. This time the lounge guy can’t hold it in and laughs “No”. Looking frustrated the young American, having displayed the clique American tourist behaviour walks away in a huff and asks his mate to leave the lounge to look for a Starbucks anyway.
As the lounge comment gave away, I’m flying Lufthansa for the first time today and am waiting in the small Business class lounge at Munich’s satellite concourse. Online they advertised it as having sweeping airplane views. The said view is of an aerobridge building. Despite the lounges small size it’s not bad. Got a few hot meal options, open self service bar and snacks including popcorn. I enjoyed a wine and some popcorn as well as a chicken curry as I waited for my first ever Lufthansa flight.
I had a quick shower to freshen up and wash the sweat and sunscreen from today off before heading to the gate. It’s so nice to have a pre flight shower - makes you feel so much nicer. I was the first to board and was greeted by 2 friendly cabin crew. We took off and flew the downwind circuit before heading off towards Austria, Hungry and Romania. The meal service commenced shortly after take off.
“Ja. As in summer the carts arrive and often are not cool. In my opinion the white wine was not of drinking temperature… the sparkling we had on ice from the previous flight so much better in my opinion. I glad you like.” He was right. The white wine from Italy was warm, but still drinkable just not ideal. While I can take wine not being chilled, smoked trout on the other hand, no thanks. Thus I ate around the trout meal and instead had a couple of bread rolls, the potato salad and the chocolate cake as my dinner. That was the meal service on this short flight. It all felt a little rushed and I found myself eating quicker than was really needed.
One glass of warm wine and two glasses of sparkling later and a chat with the crew in the galley, it was time to approach Timisoara. The crew came round with the bottle and topped up my glass again. “End of the day, don’t want to waste.” I’m glad I’m not picking up the rental car till the morning - 4 drinks in an hour (but small glasses). A few minutes later the crew return as the landing gear was down asking for my glass. “Now I have to take it”. I skull and she asks “you enjoy?”. 😂
We land at Timisoara and I wait at a comically slow baggage carousel for my bag. Last time I came to Romania it was outside the Schengen zone. Now inside (for air transit only) I arrived without the need for a stamp in the passport or customs clearance. I got some local cash out (the Romanian Lei) and hopped into a taxi for my hotel for the night.
“You want receipt?” the driver asks me. I say yes and he sighs and turns on the meter. I know I’m about to be ripped off but can’t be bothered arguing. We zoom along at speed like I remember from my last time in Romania. 130km/h on a 70km/h zone. No problems. Romania is exactly how I left it.
“You ok I take different route… roadworks make city slow”. “Sure” I reply, knowing he’s just running up the meter. At 1 Lei to 0.30AUD I just can’t be bothered arguing. His shortcut has us stuck behind a van, slowing us briefly to 100/hr. We swerve to overtake but a concrete barrier appears so we swerve even harder back into our lane.
A road worker is painting new lines on the road at 11:30 at night. “For 4, maybe 5 years they do nothing. Now elections they do everything for our vote. Whole city roadworks” mumbles my cab driver as we pass.
I make it to the hotel. Driving has not changed in Romania despite now being in the Schengen zone. Welcome to Romania 🇷🇴 where I’ll be driving on these roads for the next week. Wish me luck.Читать далее

First speedy drive in Romania 🚙💨💨

Picked up my rental car this morning. I used a local rental company and let’s say it’s just a bit different to your normal Hertz or Thrifty. I called them from the airport and they collected me in van and drove me to their office in a paddock nearby. His English wasn’t great, my Romanian non existent but I got a lot of “good… good” so I assumed it was all good.
After all the ID checks, “good, good” he says “you wait outside. I get car”. I go outside for him to follow me and say “I give you very good car… free upgrade”. I must be the only person who hates being upgraded to a bigger car. Oh well no little golf for me, big Nissan instead. He puts a cross border permit, at least that’s what I think he said it was in the glove box. “What do I need to do with that?” I ask. “Very important. Don’t loose”. I guess it will just stay there until I return it later in the week.
In a way leaving from a paddock in the countryside was less stressful than the airport where it is busy. In my mind as I turn onto the road I’m saying “keep right! Loose left, tight right”. Tight right it was. I notice the petrol tank is only 1/4 full, so the first stop is a petrol station where it’s 7.47/L - about $2.50AUD.
I couldn’t get Apple car play to connect but managed to at least have audio from my phone. I plug in my first stop into both the car and phone gps. They both find the same route. For the rest of the drive I have the two GPS systems battling it out in Romanian and English.
Once on the freeway the driving is easy and fast. The speed limit is 130km/h and soon I’m driving like a Romanian zooming past slow cars. Trucks are limited to 90km/h and stay in the right line. This means that unlike
Australia where you have trucks zooming up your arse, here I fly past them. Speaking of speed limits, I’m glad the car tells me what it is as it changes so often it’s crazy. Most people seem to only consider it a suggestion.
The freeway kinda just ends for about 15km and I detour via a crowded road through small villages. Between the towns every few hundred meters is a roadside stand selling fruit. If you were to stop, I don’t know how you’d renter the traffic.
Back on the freeway and 2.5 hours total drive time later I arrive at my first stop for the day and finish my first drive in Romania. 🥳Читать далее

Which GoT Family would live here?

Considered one of the seven wonders of Romania (who knew that was a thing), Corvin Castle is one of the largest castles in Europe. It was my first stop after a 2.5hr drive from Timisoara, now into Transylvania. I’ll take their word for it size status, but it was very knights and battle-esque complete with a wooden bridge over a big ditch (hard to get a moat to work on a hill I guess) and towers with slots for archers to shoot their arrows out. It even had a bear pit - cause how can you have a castle without that (note no bears anymore 🧸).
I followed the path around inside the castle, going up and down either winding stone or steep wood staircases. Safety isn’t a thing here it seems. It gave off a Stark’s from Game of Thrones vibe with all the stone and wood - so originally I got that vibe. But then the outside just looks too fancy for them.. Even though it was 30 degrees today it gave a cold and dark feeling, really adding to the medieval vibe. Like it’s prettier and than Winterfell, but just had that cold old castle vibe. Which Game of Thrones family would you put here?
Ok back to reality, it was built in the 15th century and then added to in the 17th and 18th centuries. Climbing up the towers gave a nice view over the town and scenery (although seems a lot of open cut coal mining happens around here). No fancy frills here - this place was built for battle!
The museum of torture looking over the castle sets the scene for life in that age, with a guillotine and stocks welcoming you to the castle ticket office. I decided not to go into that museum, given there was already a corpse (only then skeleton remained) inside the castle. Instead I grabbed a late lunch at a restaurant nearby called werk werk. Romania is very meat heavy in their dishes - chicken schnitzel and potatoes for me.
Even though I didn’t really learn much during my visit as I forgot to get the audio guide and the app was too slow, I enjoyed wandering around. Probably heard the most background English (American) that I’ve heard in the last couple of weeks which was not what I expected. If I was a day later (and staying overnight) I could have seen the ‘white night’ event they have tomorrow.Читать далее

Alba Carolina Citadel

Plugging my hotel into google maps for my drive from Corvin Castle to Sibiu I saw a citadel that looked pretty (also Apple CarPlay just started to work - win 🥇). While slightly off track it was about half way and I figured after an hours drive a break might be nice. Knowing nothing more than that I headed off from 14th century castle to an 18th century Citadel.
Once I arrived and figured out how to pay for parking I walked over the ramparts of the citadel (now much easier to pass given the elevated footbridge) in Alba Iulia. Called Alba Carolina Citadel, it was built by the Hasburgs. There we go, I’ve learnt something today - didn’t know much about who ruled Romania, but now I know the Hasburgs must have been here. Makes sense given Hungary is just next door.
Central to this end of the complex was the Roman Orthadox cathedral which dates to the early 20th century, so a fairly new addition. While dominant on the outside, it was quite small inside. Built for the coronation of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria it also represents the unification of Romania. More history learnt! Now I just need to learn about who was unified.
I really don’t know much about Romanian history other than Dracula (fake - not history) and the dictatorship era. Hopefully I’ll learn more this trip (and not just go “ooo” and “ahhh” over castles). Oh yeah and a bit on Vlad the Impaler - sounds like a real charmer.
I briefly explored the main square of the citadel (another church overlooking cafe umbrellas) and its surrounding buildings. This place has a lot of bronze sculptures of people in everyday positions. Like a lot!. From 2 guys talking, a soldier, a teacher and kids they had a lot. I think they are propping up the bronze statue industry in this town alone.
Getting a bit tired after a late night last night and a busy day today, I skipped the museums here and instead had a quick look at the main gate, complete with drawbridge ✅. I got a view over the city and surrounds which was …ok. Heading back to the car there was some sort of Motorsport festival down between the rampart making noise, but I gave it a miss.
Not a bad place to stretch the legs and look at some old stuff really. And it was free. It was only another hour of driving, mainly on the freeway and then some narrow streets before arriving at my hotel for the night. I’m exhausted today so crashing early ready to explore Sibiu tomorrow.Читать далее

Has Germany Invaded Sibiu?

Had a sleep in this morning and missed my walking tour. Oh well. Went for a walk into the old town centre and yet another festival was thrown in my honour. Although this time I had to check the map to make sure I was in Romania - as it seemed the Germans had invaded. Plenty of people walking around in what I assume is traditional dress, but speaking German. 🤔
Walking into the main square it was full of beer hall seating under marques in front of a huge stage. Lots of applauding at whatever they were saying and lots of beers in hand. Apparently it was the Democratic Forum of Germans in Transylvania (DFDS) which represents the interests of Romanian citizens of German ethnicity living in Transylvania. Who knew that was a thing.
Someone important must have been on the stage doing what I can only presume was a welcome or awards, as lots of secret service style goons in suits with ear pieces in were around the stage. Oh yeah and police with machine guns and dogs.
Come from Germany to Romania and you feel like you’re still in Germany 😂. Had a wander through the crowd and checked out the old town while listening to various German traditional bands (mainly older men who played between sips of their beers). A different architecture here, but a nice old town although it’s so crowded it’s hard to appreciate what’s going on.
It started to rain so I ducked into a less busy cafe (was serving salad so probably why not full of Germans who appear to prefer a beer this morning). I order and the cashier explains to an older man next to me how the pager works. “This go jigger jigger, you come here”. I have a lovely salad and super fresh lemonade. Ah something without meat!
The rain is on and off but nothing too bad. I decided to grab some water and road trip snacks from the supermarket as I continue my wander. Inside the door is one of those cash for recycling machines. An enterprising couple has collected several bags of bottles collected from the tables at the festival and has blocked the entry with piles of bags filled with the Germans drinking spree. The supermarket staff are not impressed and I’m confused how all those bottles will fit in this tiny machine.
It’s now sunny but still drizzling and I think I’ve seen enough of the old town. I walk back to my hotel through a lovely park area and then get ready to leave Sibiu for Brasov. It’s a cute little town and where I originally had planned to fly into, but I hesitated and the flights were sold out. Given the German festival it makes sense that flights from Munich to here were sold out this weekend.Читать далее

Google, where are you taking me?

Despite working yesterday, CarPlay isn’t playing today so I plug in my next hotel into my phone GPS (I can’t find it on the car one in Romanian). 144km, estimated 2hrs 14mins. Easy… or so I thought. My first clue should have been when it took me past the on-ramp to the freeway. Oh well - google knows best right?
What it had done was avoid an accident causing delays on the freeway. Makes sense, but it took me on a small country road over some hills. Amazing views of the mountains across the corn fields but the narrow windy roads were interesting… especially when it became a gravel road.
Passing through small villages there was really only room for 1 car between the walls of the houses/gardens on each side. Fortunately nothing came the other way in the villages as it would have been a struggle. I think it’s just because this car is bigger than I’m used to, but I have no idea of how close to the curb I am on the right side. A few minor wheel bumps of curbs may have occurred in these tight streets. Glad I took out the full instance cover 😂
Meanwhile while google may have diverted me around the accident, but making a left hand turn back into that now bumper to bumper traffic was a challenge. I managed to squeeze in beside a truck then someone let me in.
The rest of the drive was very congested with lots of traffic in both directions. If you’re driving black BMW’s in Romania it seems to be a rally race, darting in and out in front of oncoming traffic. I pass heaps of towns on the way. In many of these towns stalks (the bird) have made massive nests on top of the power poles! Such a sight but didn’t want to stop to take a picture as wouldn’t have got back in the traffic.
Getting closer to Brasov google instructed me to make a left hand turn into a street that I’d describe as someone’s driveway. Given the signs and all the traffic was going straight, I ignored it and went with the flow. After a whopping 4hours of driving I made it to Brasov! The driving time here was really underestimated! I’ve got an apartment here which is very new and modern. Time for some sleep and then tomorrow off to visit Dracula 🧛♂️.Читать далее

A lazy Brasov day

Time for a go slow day today. Had a lovely sleep in at my awesome swish apartment and got up in time for lunch. Decided that my parking spot just outside my apartment was too good to give up, and didn’t want to have to find parking in old town so took an Uber into the old town. Good choice as the old town was packed on this Sunday afternoon.
It was slightly cooler today so easy to walk around the old city without the heat. I started with the ‘Black church’. Not the most interesting inside but has pews that you can reverse the direction of like a Sydney train. The most interesting thing was watching a pair of goths posing in front of the tombs. When in Dracula land, why not hey.
Just wandered the old town and then to the cable car station to go up the hill 🚠. Decided against joining the huge line to take the cable car up, and given I was puffing after only just walking the stairs to the station decided to not hike the hill.
The old town was full of outdoor dining between the history buildings of the old town area. I had a chuckle at the coffee shop next to Starbucks with the tag like “more coffee, less bucks”. While I liked the visit I’m glad I had chosen to stay in the newer part of town in my 1 bedroom apartment. Such a nice place to relax and have a chill day. Time for a ‘reflection day’ for the rest of the day.Читать далее

Bran Castle without Dracula 🧛♂️

Well Dracula must be spoiled for choice as to who he wants to suck blood from. The queue for Bran’s Castle (also known as Dracula’s Castle) was intense. I arrived when the castle opened and the queue was already an hour long to get in. I bought the full pass including the torture museum and time travelling elevator. In for a penny in for a lei.
It was a case of just moving from room to room with the flow of people, with not much time to take anything in. I took photos of the stuff to read for later as it would cause a roadblock to read anything. Things I enjoyed - the secret staircase, balcony area and the view. Things I didn’t like - the people. Was way too busy.
The wood, stone, maze like layout and the interior courtyard balcony were all cool architectural features. Invaders obviously don’t have a tour group to follow so would find it hard to get around I reckon.
I did the extra add on of the torture museum (got some home decor inspiration there) and the time travelling elevator (a bit of fun). Neither are really essential, but the elevator is an express way out of the castle.
So Dracula. Well that’s all fake obviously and even Vlad the impaler barely spent a night here so all the horror that goes with it is all a fantasy. Other than the odd ghost projection and a dragon in the elevator it was pretty much just about the castles role as a toll collector in the gorge. Strategically well placed and the steep hill top castle would need a fit as f**k army to get up to the door.
I guess it’s one of those places you go to for the experience but wow did I mention it was busy!Читать далее

Taking the ‘eco-friendly’ route 🚙🪴

With Dracula not showing his face, even in the dark tunnels I got some lunch and then hit the road again. Google suggested I take a route that was 3mins longer but would save me 4% fuel and that this new route was ‘eco friendly’. Eh, why not. The route it took me was effectively the ‘back way’ and was quite scenic. Only one photo (because I was driving) but it started off surrounded by thick forest along windy roads through the hills. Very natural and beautiful woods. Then went across mainly farmland where the harvest was in full swing with lots of tractors bailing up the hay.
It was a slow drive for about 2.5hrs but much less stressful than the main road. I pulled over in one small town as there was a spot to take a photo of a stalk in its nest atop a power pole. There were heaps of these the other day and some today. I just don’t know how they don’t end up as fried chicken that close to the power line.
As I got closer to Sighisoara it was back on the main road. I’ve decided to just drive with the flow of traffic, as the speed limit changes so often but no one seems to follow it. Google alerted me to a speed camera, which looked like it was installed in the 90’s and firebombed many times since.
A few castles stood watching over on nearby hills. “Carl - you can’t stop at every castle, keep driving!” I told myself. I have arrived at my swish old hotel in central old town for the night. Looking forward to exploring this town that Conde Nest Traveller describe as one of “The most beautiful small towns in Europe”. Big call. Will find out soon.Читать далее

Most beautiful town in Europe? 🤔

That’s what Conde Nest Traveller called Sighișoara - well at least one of them. They said “If you like your Eastern European towns to come with a fear factor, then the Transylvanian city of Sighișoara is for you.” Although the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler I didn’t get impaled here, but do feel I got jibbed at dinner (ordered the Romanian goulash only to be told it was finished for the day.. 15mins later they accepted an order of it from the table next to me).
The old town of the city is very pretty with uneven stone (and slippery af) streets, colourful buildings and a good mix of old fortifications and church’s crammed into a small old town. The clock tower over an arch passageway was the highlight as was the mix of stone and wood. I climbed the stairs of the famous covered walkway expecting a great view from the top. Alas trees covered most of the old town. Seems the steps were just to get you to church without getting your hair and frock wet.
I’ve heard the most English (or to be more precise, American) here than anywhere else on the trip to date. Seems like they read the same article as me. While I liked the town, and think it was beautiful, I think the old town thing was just getting a little repetitive for this week. Never thought I’d hear myself say that.
I’m also starting to get a bit tired, just like my toothbrush which went 18 days without a charge before it started to beg to be recharged. So I decided against heading back into town in the morning and just moving on to my final stop in Romania. It would be easier to share the driving as that has really taken a lot of concentration and worn me down. Tonight will be very much a rest night. Note to past self - should have done this loop of Transylvania the other way around. This would have been first up and would have gotten a much better reception from me.Читать далее

Salt mine cum amusement park?

A salt mine was just outside Cluj-Napoca, my final destination in Romania. The pictures looked good so decided to make a small detour to check it out. Seems half of Romania also had the same idea - another popular spot. The mine started operations in the area in 1271, and the deepest part of this mine was mined between 1690 and 1890.
I’m not a huge fan of being underground, but knowing that this giant mine has been stable for the last few hundred years, I figured it give it a go. Once I walked down a long gentle staircase and along a tunnel I arrived at the ‘Rich’ stairs. Sounds like where I should aim to be. Going down these enters the biggest cavern. It’s 13 stories high open area with walkways around the damp rock walls.
I get the feeling of claustrophobia and fear of heights all at once. There is a lift that goes down but the queue is insane so I walk to the other end of the cavern and take the 13 flights down wooden stairs. Once I arrive at the bottom a theme park awaits. There is a Ferris wheel, mini golf, badminton, table tennis and more. Very little about the mine is here, it seems it’s just an all weather amusement park underground.
Looking down to the lower cavern (another 13 stories down) I can see the lake and some cool light installations. Another elevator has a huge queue so again I take the stairs. These narrower stairs are jam packed with very little movement. I eventually get to the source of the problem. A very fat man going up completely blocks the path to anyone going in any direction. I manage to squeeze against a corner to manoeuvre around him. Everyone else seems to just wait confused. Not to judge 👨⚖️ but I’m amazed he made it this far up the stairs given the amount of sweat flowing from him.
The lake looked better from above, and I didn’t feel like renting a row boat for a solo paddle. With the stairs still clogged I waited 40mins for an elevator back to the main cavern. Was worth the wait as a guy who started the stair climb at about the same time
I joined the queue came out as I got out of the lift.
I’d honestly had enough of it by this point. The hundreds of people, with each kid screaming to hear their echo was giving me the shits. I walked up the other 13 floors to make my way out and high tailed it to the car. I think this is probably good for kids wanting to play the attractions downstairs but I was more interested in the history, which was lacking. It was still an impressive sight to see - a candlelight musical performance would be amazing in here (with no kids).Читать далее

ПутешественникWow! I think that would freak me out. Don’t mind caves but the height would do me in. Agree about the kids. Don’t need that added into the mix of lots of adults.

Farewell Romania 👋 (and driving 🚙)

“What I like about Europe so far is that there is one button in the hotel room that turns off everything! How have we not thought of that?” Says an American at the table next to me for breakfast on my last morning in Romania. I’d put the people, old towns, castles, different cultures and beautiful scenery on my “what I like about Europe so far” list.
I’m in Cluj-Napoca after my week of driving around Romania and I’m exhausted! I bit off a bit more than this city slicker driver could handle in a week. Mainly because my planning had me only driving around 2hrs a day, but that quickly blew out due to Romanian roads & traffic. It’s intense. If I was able to share the driving it would have been ok, but for a solo trip it was too much.
I still enjoyed the journey but had a quiet morning and late check out today to recuperate a little. I must say I was very happy to return the rental car and be done with driving. I even got a €21 voucher for returning too much fuel. Doubt that will ever get used again 😂.
So now I wait at the airport for my flight to Hamburg (via Warsaw) very early but enjoying the downtime and not having to do anything or be anywhere for a few hours.Читать далее

Will I make my Warsaw connection 🛫😬

Arriving early for my flight I grabbed a late lunch at the only cafe before check in opened. It was a quick check in process even with only one staff member working the counter. Much less hectic than the Ryanair check in a few rows down. Once past security the downstairs area of the terminal was packed with Wizz Air having flights to Malaga, Madrid and Brussels and Ryanair to Milan.
Upstairs was the lounge where I tried my luck. Alas I was met with “No contract LOT, sorry no English”. That was fair as my flight was in economy but my connection is business so thought I’d try my luck. Also upstairs was my gate and immigration. No need for immigration as România is now in the Schengen zone (for air travel only).
An interesting airport layout with the area in front of the terminal filled with busses and all the planes being over there *points* 👉. I take up a seat by the window and wait for my Embraer 190 to arrive from Warsaw - which is delayed. The Ryanair flight begins to ‘board’ about 10mins before their plane lands 😂 in typical Ryanair fashion.
“Status unknown”. My plane has been changed a couple of times in Warsaw, and despite the boarding time passing my plane is yet to leave Warsaw. I did have 2hrs connection time but that is slowly being eaten away. Normally I wouldn’t care if it was late (aiming for that EU compensation cash), but I have a tour at Airbus in the morning that I don’t want to miss. None of my apps seem to have an estimate yet, but at least FlightRadar24 is showing me the tail number so I can see that something is happening.
At the time my flight was supposed to depart from here in Cluj-Napoca, it left the gate and was taxiing in Warsaw to get here. With all the current estimates, unless they hold my flight to Hamburg, I’ll arrive 20mins after my connection departs. Looks like I’ll be €250 richer, but one Airbus factory visit poorer.
We boarded 2hrs late via a bus gate (as above, everything seems to be bus gates here). Once those bus doors opened it was a mad scramble onboard and we were boarded super fast… until I realise that a second bus was yet to come and they were much slower to get onboard - and seemed to have all the large bags.
The Embraer 190 is 5 years old having first flown in 2019. In. 2-2 configuration I’m in 5A by the window. I’m seated next to an unaccompanied minor and was asked by the crew to assist him if the event of an emergency “if the oxygen mask drop etc”. Doors close at 8pm and at 8:13 I lift off to Warsaw. Assuming no taxi time, I’d have 7mins before my next flight leaves.
There is a cute German couple (assumption on nationality) who obviously don’t love each other enough to pay to sit together. One is seated a row ahead on the opposite aisle which is nice eye candy for the flight. The kid next to me gets a colouring book and we all get sanitising wipes.
“Would you like a bun? Blueberry or Tomato”. Tomato bun? How weird. It’s offered with tea, coffee or water. I opt for the blueberry cause I’m not weird and a water. The bun is nice, although I’m pretty sure I preordered a meat sandwich with my booking. Oh well - nice to see an airline in europe giving away snacks to passengers in economy. I’m guessing with the delay out of Warsaw and plane swaps my meal is on another flight.
By this stage in the flight we are detouring through Hungary and Slovakia to avoid the southwest corner of Ukraine (for obvious reasons). It’s a lovely view out the unaligned window (a quirk with Embraer’s) with the low sun reflecting off patching clouds below. I browse the inflight magazine as the only entertainment onboard and note the transfer guide for Warsaw. My next flight departs from gate 23, which I notice on the map is the bus gate. I find it more unlikely that my connection will be made today.
As we begin our decent the kid next to me is looking for something under the seat. I try and help him but as I don’t speak Polish and he doesn’t speak English, I don’t know what I’m looking for. With the help of the crew we establish it’s his phone case. We find it and with some gymnastics from me, we get it.
An announcement is made with several destinations being told to go to the service desk - also know as, you missed your connection. From my flight I’m told to go direct to gate 23. I run between gates and make my connecting flight! I wonder if my bag was as lucky?Читать далее

LOT Business Class 🛫💼🙅🏼♂️

I made it! After running from my connection through Warsaw airport I made the Hamburg flight. I’d made an $80 bid to upgrade to business for this leg, so didn’t have to do the walk of shame as everyone was waiting onboard for me to arrive. I slipped into seat 2D and was offered a water or juice. Still puffing from the run, water it was.
I’m on the Embraer 175 this time (a smaller version of the last plane). The euro business layout is 2-2, with the aisle seat blocked. Row 2 is also a front row and plenty of legroom for my short legs. I see a cart of bags loaded just after I board and hope mine is among them but don’t see it.
We push back only 10mins behind schedule so I wave goodbye to that compensation payment but will make it to the Airbus tour after all. The sun has set as I take off and track across Poland towards Germany.
What is it with European airlines and fish being served? It’s gross! I get served a plate of raw salmon. I don’t eat fish generally and although I decided to grow up and try it, once that fishy smell got near my face I quickly abort that mission. So instead my business class meal is a 50c piece sized square of some type of meatloaf and a couple of bread rolls with butter.
I get a white wine to go with the meal, a Chardonnay from Australia. It’s not bad but a little warm. Peacock’s heritage is the brand which I can’t say I’ve ever heard of. The bottle tells me it’s from South East Australia, so my first thought is that is a Woolies brand or something. Given the meal was a flop, I do wonder how many of these little bottles I need to drink to recoup my $80.
There were thunderstorms over Hamburg earlier this evening and we expect to encounter them on our approach. When the crew member comes back from serving economy I ask for another wine. The crew offer snacks (salty or sweet) and I opt for the salted cashews (which turn out to be lacking salty but still a good mix with the wine).
I’d put a bid in to upgrade this sector because a) it’s a slightly longer flight, 2) it was from LOT’s home port so probably better catered and III) because I wanted to try the lounge in Warsaw. Obviously only a) was worthwhile in the end given the fishy meal and the run between gates. Still I love being a business class snob (gotta own it) and enjoyed the space and wine (even if it was some generic brand).
This flight feels like it went faster than the last, even though it was longer. Soon I’m on decent into Hamburg, fortunately missing the earlier thunderstorm. Instead there are clouds about and a red sky in the distance. I do love how European airlines turn off all the lights for approach as you get such a better view. Unfortunately the guy behind me (now those curtains have been opened) has his overhead light on which makes the window reflective. Fortunately he turns it off before we land.
I land in Hamburg and must say the LOT Embraer pilots today have buttered the landings perfectly today. It’s raining lightly on arrival and a follow me car directs us to a remote stand. I almost slip on the wet steps down to the bus, but manage to recover without making a fool of myself. I watch them unload the bags but don’t see mine. They also don’t use a loading ramp and instead just unload from head height to the waiting baggage cart.
Onboard the bus the baggage from our flight zooms past us. Hopefully my bag is also there. I get to the baggage claim and the bags arrived immediately. Alas, mine does not 😔. I join the queue for baggage tracking to see where my bag has ended up. I wait half an hour to get to the front of the queue only to be told that LOT don’t have any staff or any handling agent here tonight, so I should email this random email address my details and wait to hear back.
I do as I’m told, and also google and find an online report form on LOT’s website. I do all this on the train to my hotel. I get a reference number and arrive at my hotel with the clothes on my back and my small bag of electronics, medications and my passport. The receptionist gives me a toothbrush kit and I call it a night googling what my travel insurance and the Montreal Convention cover. Thanks a lot LOT.Читать далее

The birth of Airbus A320s ✈️😍

In a bit of a daze this morning after a less than ideal sleep wondering if or when I’ll ever see my bag again I made my way to visit Airbus. About 15 years ago I did a factory tour at Boeing in Seattle and after my failed attempt in Toulouse in 2022 it was now time to visit an Airbus factory. It was about an hour on public transport there (mostly bus). I ate 2 croissants, a bottle of coke and a water on the journey there. Perhaps those wines last night gave me a hangover 🤕.
On arrival my passport is checked, headset provided and safety briefing given. We have 2 tour guides (one in English one in german) and 2 minders from Airbus. Photos are strictly prohibited and even getting your phone out will immediately be greeted by the wrath of the minders with a stern telling off (not me, I was well behaved 😇).
On the bus we are taken to the visitor room, which is above a life size cabin mockup of an A350, used for training on installing components and testing new ideas. After a brief video and discussion on the history of Airbus and the Hamburg site, we’re back on the bus and taken to the assembly line. Upstairs I noticed that Qantas (among many other airlines) has an office.
In this building the sections are joined to form the fuselage and the wings and landing gear attached. The guide called it a marriage of parts, after which the plane can move around the plant on its own wheels. A plane is born. From thousands of parts to flying out the door is about a 20 day process.
We keep driving around various parts of the factory for 2.5 hours seeing various stages of manufacture. With Airbus being a European conglomerate, Hamburg makes the middle and rear sections, UK makes the wings, France makes the front section and cockpit and Spain make the stabilisers. Hamburg puts them all together to make a finished A320 family of aircraft.
The final hangers we visited were the cabin finalisation and testing hangers. Originally built for the A380, each hanger now fits 3 A321s! In this I saw a Jetstar A321 tail getting its cabin fitted and some beautify freshly painted Indigo, Delta and Spirit aircraft.
A great little tour with an informative guide perked me up from my slump. Shame no photos but I get that. It’s about protecting the IP and also ensuring no phones or cameras drop onto the spotlessly clean work areas. I took the bus and train back into the city happy that I finally got to see where these amazing planes come from.Читать далее

When will I see you again 🧳

Today was a waiting game for my luggage to arrive. A 4am email from the airline said my bag had been found, was in Hamburg and was being delivered today. At 7pm it still hasn’t arrived. The airline communication is hopeless. They don’t answer their phone (well someone does but all they say is “that person is very busy and doesn’t take calls, email them.”). I wonder if they have sent my bag to Hamburg or Melbourne.
I’d had a little shopping spree yesterday for a few days of clean clothes and toiletries but ideally I’d want my stuff back (although Hamburg has a lot more colour choices than Melbourne). It’s not cold but not hot either. I bought a jumper but could use some jeans tonight. Maybe one last insurance inspired purchase after dinner?
I’d been for a few walks today, mainly for food as it was it was a little rainy in the morning and I have a very late night tonight, so took it easy and napped a bit. As I order dinner (pizza with a coke) the waiter suggests “Whisky cola.. whisky Cola”. I say no just the cola thanks… “no no no… whisssskey”. He still just leaves only a coke lol. Fortunately by this time the rain has stopped and it’s a lovely sunny evening.
Hopefully by the time I get back to my hotel around 1am (I said it would be a late night) my bag will have been delivered. I think I’ve spoken to even staff member of the hotel today asking if it’s been delivered yet 😂. Next stop is a cruise and every nerd kids wet dream - Miniature Wunderland!Читать далее

Cruising in Hamburg ⛴️

No not like that, get your mind out of the gutter, I’m on a boat. The only way to get skip the line tickets to the Miniature Wunderland was to buy a combo ticket with a pre entry cruise. My cruise was for 8:30pm with it advertised as “we have ordered lots of boats, just turn up and go at your time. No waiting.” Alas the tide was high and only a few boats fit under the smaller bridges to get to the dock.
The crowd now waiting was sorted (in German) between those who can walk 10mins to get to the bigger boat at a different dock and those that can’t. English speakers were classified as those who couldn’t walk. “It’s easier” they say.
We head onto the boat, similar to the canal boats in Amsterdam. I grab a seat inside by the window then immediately feel the rock and remember getting sea sick on one of these in Amsterdam so move to the small outside section. I grab a centre seat at the back, basically sitting on the engine which makes the seat nice and warm.
We head out along the old canal area and out into the harbour. I’m not much of a boat lover but with the sun already set the sky is a beautiful colour and the lights on the buildings along the shore is pretty. All the commentary is in German but I understand what to look at (or at least the direction) when the rest of the boat suddenly turn and look to each side. We pass one boat called ‘VB Perfect’ which makes me think of the beer which is anything but perfect.
Soon we’re in the port of Hamburg getting really close to some massive container ships. I know plane spotters and train spotters, but what’s a ship spotter called? Turns out there are a lot of them on this cruise as heaps of people were snapping photos like crazy of the big ship. Before I realised I was in with them taking heaps of pictures… why? I don’t really care for container ships.
We went through a lock (not sure of the purpose given the other side was connected to the same bit of water we were just in and then looped around through some dry docks to where we started. By this time it was dark and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg was the star of the show getting lots of pics from everyone.
Even though I generally don’t like a boat cruise, this was pretty alright. Bonus I didn’t throw up or get overly nauseous! Next stop, Wunderland!Читать далее

Miniature Wunderland - I’m in love 😍

You know I’m going to give you ten out of ten! Ok, if I’m ever missing… this is where to find me. Holy crap this place exceeded my expectations and hit all the right nerd buttons. Planes, trains, models, detail, - real life world in miniature. Honey, shrink me already - stuff the kids. They have day/night cycles, heaps of buttons to press to activate more actions, an airline flight schedule and even real water that has its own tide! Wow, I’m in love! When they said they are open till 1am, I thought who is going at 1am! After arriving at 10pm, I left at 12:30am.
I’m not going to write much about this place as the photos and videos say so much more (this post is less than 10% of the photos taken). There was a job add and I seriously considered moving to Hamburg and living out my days here driving planes and trains. Although Hamburg gave me a poor first impression (lost bag even though not Hamburg’s fault), I will definitely be returning here in the future to spend more time looking at all the detail and amazement of this great miniature Wunderland! 🤩😍🤩Читать далее

Have bag will travel (🧳🧺)

Morning train to catch complete with my luggage which arrived sometime between 8pm and 1am. Such a relief to have it back but I also remembered today is a laundry day. I took the ICE from Hamburg to Schwerin, my final stop on this trip before the long trip home begins.
A lady is in my reserved seat when I board the train and stubbornly does not want to move. I take the seats behind which offer a better window view anyway. I buy breakfast on the train, a cinnamon roll, coke and snickers bar - a healthy breakfast hey? It’s a quick ride of a little over an hour and my headphones mostly drown out the screaming baby.
I arrived in Schwerin and go straight to the laundromat that is near the station but far from my hotel. A 3 machine process here. One machine washes, one spins and a third dries (although the first dryer I used wasted 20mins as it never heated up). Arriving at my hotel with a clean suitcase of clothes, I take a short nap to be refreshed to explore my final German castle.Читать далее

Schwerin Castle - best for last? 🏰

Did I by chance save the best castle for last? Maybe.. just maybe. Sure it’s not perched atop a mountain inside a defensive fortress, but this lakeside castle, or palace if you will, has some style about it. It got added to UNESCO as a world heritage site this year and works are ongoing for renovating the palace.
The positioning and gardens around it has style to it similar to what I like in a royal residence. Gardens to wander, a lake to take tea by, and postcard views from your tower corner reception rooms. While only a small portion is open I liked what I saw. Sign me up!The building is also used by the local parliament which is kind of a cool mix of historic monarchy and democracy.
Perhaps I’m drawn to it as it has the nickname of Neuschwanstein of the North (the castle I visited earlier in the trip). It does have the tower thing going for it similar to Newschwanstein. Anyway, this one belongs to the House of Mecklenburg, whose first prince was recognised by the Holy Roman Empire back in say, 1170! So they’d been around a while. This castle is circa the 19th century, so pretty new and maybe that’s the appeal.
After a walk through the castle and gardens but the lake it was time for my last night in Germany before I make the trip back home. I’m starting to get tired of moving so looking forward to getting home to my boys in a few days. In the meantime, taking in the views of one more castle was a good way to end the trip.Читать далее

Homeward bound… sorta 🚊

Time to start the journey home, and just like the way here, it’s not direct. First step is a 3 hour train ride to Berlin’s “new” airport. I’d booked the direct train to avoid risks of missed connections and it was packed. I was one of the first to scramble on board and found a seat just after the bike storage area. With suitcase stored behind my seat I at least had some room.
As we depart I hear a conductor making a commotion behind me (in German). I look and he is pointing to my bag. I say “mine, ich nein sprechen die deutsch“. He continues a tirade in German that I have no idea what he is in about. I get up (presuming all this fuss means he wants my bag moved) and grab my bag while he still talks in German at me. I reiterate that I don’t speak German and he says “emergency procedures - must be clear”.
I lol on the inside as to get to said fire extinguisher you’d have to get past the bikes first. Yet as a law abiding person I move my bag and instead now occupy 2 seats. A younger lady manages to sit in where my bag now sits by having her legs in the aisle. As we depart there are now 3 people blocking access to that fire extinguisher. The train is now so full that the inspector can’t ever get back to this part of the train.
The DB app says my train will be late due to slow passengers disembarking the full train. Umm maybe chuck on another carriage love. I settle in with some musicals for the now 3.5hr ride to Berlin. I love seeing all the solar farms and wind towers as I travel along. Why we don’t have this at home when we have so much sun is beyond me (yep I’m a green energy fan).
Arriving at the airport it’s almost time to leave Europe. One more stop in Amsterdam before I arrive in London for the night. Hopefully my bag makes this connection, but I have an AirTag in it now to track its progress.Читать далее

Royal Dutch Airlines - Flying KLM ✈️

I’m off on KLM, Royal Dutch Airlines today flying from the new Brandenburg Berlin airport to Amsterdam then off to London. The new Brandenburg Airport was due to open, well, a bloody long time ago in October 2011. It finally opened on 31 October 2020 - in time for the pandemic I guess. Last time I came to Berlin I went to Tegel airport which was in dire need of replacement. The new airport is quite nice, spacious and easy to navigate.
Check in was self serviced and somehow my bag has put on weight. It’s gone from 19 to 22.5 kg. Hopefully I haven’t done the same. Anyway this means the machine wouldn’t accept my bag so I had to go to counter to get a heavy sticker. I got directions to the priority security and the lounge options which was handy. Despite being a ‘new’ airport, all the scanners are still old school having to take your laptops out. I guess in 2011 when they were supposed to be used the CT scanners weren’t a thing yet.
There were 2 lounges to choose from, either the Tempelhof or Tegal lounge in a nod to the history of Berlin’s old airports. I (by chance) choose Tempelhof and it’s a good pick as it’s just near my gate. The lounge is upstairs, quiet and has some nice hot and cold food options. I go for the pasta with vegetables and the potato as I missed lunch due to the train ride here. It was filling but I still go back for seconds with a small glass of sparkling. I see my plane land, a cute little baby 737-700, and make my way to the gate.
While waiting at the gate to board there were 2 clear lines. To the left, priority for groups 1&2 and to the right, everyone else. Both lines waiting in an orderly fashion. One lady, pushes past both lines flashing her Flying Blue gold card at everyone and pushing to the front. One man challenges her to which she just puts her card in his face and stays put at the front. I laugh a little as when boarding opens her boarding pass fails to scan and many people pass her. Once in the aerobridge she pushes to the front again. I take up my seat in 1A, and have the row to myself. The pushy lady is way down the back. 😂
We push back and I notice that the ramp area has 3 taxi lanes. This allows 3 aircraft to push back and startup without having a queue or hold up. Nice and efficient. The crew member nearest me does the safety demonstration with a little flair which is cool. A speedy taxi to the runway and in a few minutes I’m airborne heading west for Amsterdam.
After take off the crew serve meals in business class in cute little cardboard boxes. It’s not some cheap box, it’s a well designed Dutch themed box. It even has a menu card inside it. The meal today is a pesto salad (thank god no fish), some almonds and 2 macaroons. It’s all delicious which is the first time I’ve said that for a Euro business meal. I have a French white wine served with the meal. Even the salt and pepper is done in a detailed way in a cute little envelope which I take with me.
I enjoy the flight, the blue of the cabin and the view out the window. It’s cool to see planes zoom past you, above or below which is when you get a sense of how fast you’re going when flying. As we enter the Netherlands and begin the approach the scenery below is flat but symmetrically beautiful. Each field has a wind turbine at the end of it in a neat row. A large canal with a lock and waterway behind it. Ahh, we’re in the Netherlands for sure. Maybe it’s my Dutch heritage coming through but it all just looks right.
I land and arrive at the gate on time and begin the long walk through this massive airport to exit the European Union. Next stop the post Brexit UK.Читать далее

ПутешественникYou should join us next year in late June to meet up with the family and see where your mum was born in Lage Zwaluwe. You would love Paul. Ans and Ans and Reitje. Also good to see Wim and Kees. Kees just turned 87 and has been with his partner Wim for nearly 60 years. They would love to meet you as well. Paul and Ans have a holiday home in a small village in northern Italy which we are welcome to use.
ПутешественникSleep is so important. Love that you prioritised that!
