    Keppel Sands

    June 16, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Benita is flying up to Rockhampton tomorrow, so we’ll stay at Keppel Sands for a couple of nights. Small park, not crowded, camped overlooking the bay. Caught a few mud crabs, they were males but unfortunately about 1-2 cm too small. Angela got nipped when picking one up- drew blood. When tipping them back one lost a claw, so we cooked it up - tiny portion but delicious. Might try again sometime. Staying at Burnett Heads caravan park & going on a Lady Musgrave island and snorkelling tour. Too cold for me, just the wind is giving me an ear ache , Angela & Benita have braved it though. They saw some nice coral and colourful fish. Our next stop was Burrum Point in a national park for a couple of days. The road in was bumpy and deep sand. We later discovered that it was better to drive along the beach. Had another go at crabbing and this time caught a legal sized male, so we are now camping at Inskip Point dining on mud crab, prawns and oysters. Dropped Benita off at Maroochydore airport and stayed the night at Angela’s sisters place at Burleigh Heads.Read more

  • Eungella

    June 9, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Staying a couple of days at Neem Hall. Angela has a zoom lecture and there seems to be enough wifi here. Nice spot by a river and grassy field. We are 50 metres from the next camper. Not many campers, not sure why, there are other places that are packed. Maybe because this place has no shower or toilet, only river water (clean and tastes good)The owner has chooks, goats, turkeys running around & a couple of border collies that love chasing balls. One is even into soccer and dribbles and flicks the ball with his nose. Decided to stay a few more nights, walked Finch Hatton gorge and had a look around Eungella Nat park. Didn’t see any platypus. Had a look around Cape Hillsborough. Very scenic around Mackay area, cane fields and green pasture with a background of mountains. Went to the local show, horse events, wood chopping, motorcycle daredevil riding fireworks etc. bit of fun. Time to move on. Been here for 7days, probably the most time we’ve spent in one spot.Read more

  • Leaving Kakadu

    June 4, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

A quick restock in Katherine, it’s the third time we’ve been through Katherine these holidays. Probably will never feature on the cover of “10 top camping spots but a quick overnight at a Telstra tower has some positives. They are usually a bit off the road, with a nice flat area and the grass is cleared around them and not many people use them, at least we’ve never had to share a spot. The next couple of days will be driving to get to Sarina to catch up with my cousin Mark. The night sky is pretty amazing at the moment & the morning sky rivalled it. First time in a while we’ve had to put a jumper on at night. Arrived in Sarina, cane fields and coal. Someone is still buying our coal judging by the number of ships waiting to load. Had a nice time with Mark & Maxine , stayed 3 days.Read more

  • Kakadu

    June 3, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Stayed by a lagoon overnight and got attacked by hoards of mozzies, worst we’ve ever experienced. Had a look at some of the sites in the park. The Warradjan cultural centre was interesting , a walk around the rock art at Burrungkuy and a swim in the rock pool at Maguk was refreshing. Many of the popular places are closed at the moment due to the death of an elder and some sort of disagreement between the owners and national parks. Walked out to the boat ramp at Yellow Waters and as we were about to leave, saw a small croc poke his head up, -ah, it’s the 1st June!Read more

  • Overnight at Jabiru

    May 31, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Made it back out , no problems and staying in the Jabiru caravan pk overnight. Went on a boat tour on East Alligator river- saw no crocs- told they will be in their hundreds in June& July. It’s the 31st May today. Indigenous guide was informative. The boat went up to Cahills crossing from the upstream side when the tide was coming in and it’s easy to see how people could get caught out trying to cross at the wrong time. Had dinner in the park- nice setting around the pool- feeling of being on an island resort.Read more

  • Maningrida

    May 25, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I spent a lazy day looking out over the water mostly while Angela spent looking at the laptops -mostly. A few more questions to answer by Thursday. Greg & Rachel live 100 metres from the waters edge in the uniting church manse, unfortunately swimming is not advised, still it is very scenic & the waves lapping on the shore is nice to go to sleep to. It’s a nice view from our camper and some evenings the sunsets are amazing. Went looking for some automotive wire at the shop but none suitable. The dump came to the rescue. Had a bbq at Rocky point this evening. There’s a sort of large rockpool where water flows over a rocky wall at high tide. Apparently it’s ok to swim there, I guess you can see any crocs climbing over the rocks and have time to make a dash for the shore. We just enjoyed sitting on the beach eating our dinner. A team of MMM are coming here in Aug to fill in a space under the house into a bedroom and small living area. The uniting church bush paster had lined up someone to work out a we found out that materials list for the job but he was too busy so I spent some hours drawing up a plan and trying to estimate quantities of materials required. Hope it works out. It’s a long way to go for more nails. Had a great time with Greg and Rachel and the kids. Meike can talk under water. Low tige at Cahills Crossing was 8:30am so we packed up early to make it. Later we found out that we had til 3, so plenty of time. The river crossings had dropped a lot from the time we drove in. Vets visited during the week and desexed more than 200 cats and dogs just on the back of their Ute tray- no charge. Lots of wobbly animals walking around for a couple of hours. A barge brings everything to town, the road is is not suitable for trucks.Read more

  • On the way to Maningrida

    May 24, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

The road from Jabiru to Maningrida has only been open recently due to the river crossings being too high. Cahills crossing is famous for croc spotting, fatalities & cars being wash over the causeway. A couple of hrs either side of low tide is the time to cross. The scenery is pretty fantastic, wetlands, birds, rock escarpments. Didn’t have time to take photos as we wanted to get to Greg & Rachel’s before dark, we’ll get them on the way back. Managed to get through all the river crossings, about4 major ones & many smaller, without any trouble…maybe some faster heat rates at times. Didn’t see much wildlife, a couple of buffalo, horses & kangaroos but no crocs😓. I suppose that’s a good thing though. The road was ok, took about 4 hrs, the usual corrugations & plenty of washaways.Read more

  • Darwin

    May 23, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Back in the big smoke, literally, they are doing hazard reduction everywhere up here. Staying at the Hidden Valley caravan park for a few days, pleasant enough place although near the airport and Hidden Valley race circuit. The had a Burnout & Mullet event on Sat & Sun night- enough said! Rhianna , Angela’s niece took us to Litchfield NP for the day and Florence falls & the Cascades were the standouts- plenty of water still flowing & swimming allowed. Finished the day off with a meal at a pub. I had a steak schnitzel- like a chicken one only steak- never seen it on a menu before- was ok. Darwin wasn’t too crowded but the week end before it hosted Bassinthegrass music festival and apparently the city almost ran out of beer. The only photo we took in Darwin was of a python at least 3 metres long in a tree in the botanic gardens(bit hard to see). There was a wedding ceremony happening below, guests oblivious.Read more

  • On the road again

    May 18, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Said our goodbyes to Tim & Jane & the ladies & headed back up the Stuart Hw. It was a really good time there and hopefully they were encouraged as much as we were. Dropped in to the Centrelink/ council office to get some forms verified & caught up with a white lady who we met last time. She has just been hit by the Holy Spirit & is like a sponge sucking up everything she can find & asking so many questions. She thought it was Devine providence that we arrived when we did. She came down to the river with us all a couple of times. Keep praying that the seed has landed on the good soil. Found a pleasant spot to camp on a river at Edith. Not sure if there are crocs , apparently they have cleared them from the springs in Katherine 50 k further south. Checked out Pine Creek & the museum- talkative local attendant. 3000 Chinese were bought in to mine for gold & build the rail line in the late 1800s. Camping by a crystal clear stream, flowing over rocks, even I went for a dip. Grass under foot and no burrs or red dust. Angela is planning to spend the next couple of days on her assignment. Discovered that the electrical plug to our fridge had half melted, loose connection I guess. Fortunately I had packed a soldering iron, not usual, & was able to make a temporary fix. Cold beer is still on the menu. Walked along the stream up to the waterfall- very pleasant. Darwin will be our next stop for a couple of days. Will try to meet up with Angela’s niece Rhianna.Read more

  • Back in Epenarra

    May 4, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Time for a rest and domestics/minor repairs-washing, cleaning etc.
Been searching through the dump to find scrap metal to make a frame to hang the canvas story pictures that the ladies paint- a bit like a clothes rack. Went down to the river this afternoon and cooked a pork roast in the camp over-crackling even. Tim and the kids went for a kayak and Angela swam across to the other side.
A visiting band played some music the other night. Part of an attempt to get all the communities in the Barkley region talking together and mapping out a future. They also put on a free bbq for everyone. Seems like it’s a way to get people to come. Helped Tim hang a car bonnet sign in a tree to try to get people thinking about not getting on the grog. Men’s bible study down by the river with the obligatory kangaroo tail cooked over the coals

    May 1, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Arrived a Katherine Showground & found a shady tree to set up. There were 6 talks by Jono Wright via zoom. Unfortunately he felt unwell and as a precaution he wanted to get checked for COVID but there wasn’t any checking stations over the long week end, so he isolated in a Katherine hotel anyway. Looked at 3 kings, Saul, David & Jesus & what their heart condition was for God. There was also time for different communities to share or sing. Did the trip back in one stint- 12 hrs. It’s been a busy couple of days. Who said retirement was laying back. The photo of the man playing guitar is Harold & Kaye Dalywaters from Elliott , who visited at Winmalee church many yrs ago.Read more

  • Overnight at Daley Waters

    April 30, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Herding cows is probably easier than organising a mob of women from Community. Eventually got going and ended the day at Daly Waters caravan park and pub. There was a rodeo on as well and so many spectators and competitors that we were shown to the overflow camping area-there must have been 1000 people there.Turns out it was a blessing-away from the main crowded camping area and our group had it to ourselves. Music is still blaring, maybe it will stop at midnight. I think they only have one rodeo per year here and we picked that day to overnight. Some of our group went over to watch the bull riding etc but when we got the chance, things were winding down and we only got to see the people running and sliding in the mud in their undies- literally a letdown!Read more

  • Rest day in Epenara

    April 29, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Arrived at Tim & Jane’s yesterday and setup in their yard. It was good to catch up with them again.Town looks pretty much as we remember, maybe a few more dead cars laying around. Met up with some of the ladies at mid week church and this afternoon I went out with Tim and a couple of men to the river and had a bible study while the kangaroo tail was roasting in the coals. Tomorrow- Friday- we leave early for Mataranka for an overnight stop and then to Katherine for the convention.Read more

  • Errolola Waterhole

    April 27, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Big drive today, shopping in Alice and then planned to camp at Old police station waterhole via Murray Downs and the Binn track. Didn’t quite make it so stopped at Errolola waterhole. Got fuel at Barrow ck $1:94 cpl before turning off hwy. Pub at Barrow ck interesting, lots of quirky stuff all over the walls. Binn’s track rough in parts, lots of wash aways. Apparently there has been a lot of rain this season. Baked lamb & roast veg for dinner tonight. It’s still about 26 deg now at 7:15pm- low 30s in the day but low humidity. Should get into Epenarra by lunch time tomorrow.Read more

  • Coober Pedy & desert oak roadside camp

    April 26, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Had a bit of a look around Coober Pedy and went into the old mine museum which was interesting- hard work in the old days. Landscape is a mass of dirt hills. We’re about 150k from Alice, overnighting at another roadside camp. The road runs between a couple of sand dunes and the camp is not far off the road. When you’re lying in bed you can hear the road trains coming from a distance and as they get closer they get noisier and noisier with the sound echoing off the dunes. It sounds like an aeroplane landing and you have your tent set up beside the runway.Read more

  • Warren gorge camping area

    April 25, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Stayed overnight at Warren gorge conservation park part of the Flinders, on the advice of a comment in WikiCamps that said she stayed over Easter and was the only one there. People, generators, kids, music- joy! People driving 50m to the toilet??The toilets and fire pits were nice. Soft close toilet seats even! Angela went for a 5 k walk at dawn while I waited for the sun to heat the camper before getting out of bed. Chuffs(birds, spelling?) are very friendly.Read more

  • Roadside camp

    April 25, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Checked out Woomera and looked at the bombs and rocket display in the park. The town looks drab but has lots of facilities, netball, tennis, pool etc. camped along the road tonight , not much traffic after dusk. Plenty of wood for a fire. Will check out Coober Pedy tomorrow- about an hour up the road. Have had phone reception in and out for a long way along the Stuart Hwy.Read more

    April 23, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Camping on the shore right on waters edge of lake Bonny near Barmera. Nice sunset. No set camp spots, can spread out along shore. Some soft sand. Passed through fruit fly quarantine. They confiscated our choko. They didn’t know what it was. Balmy night, no wind. Pelicans fishing in the lake.Read more
