Off to the Whitsundays

Taking advantage of the Easter long weekend we heading off to the Mackay and the Whitsundays. For this adventure we will be based at Airlie Beach.

1 hour fly from the Goldie to Mackay, picked up a rental car from the airport and then our first stop is at the big Banana, the one in Mackay. Then after some breakky we start the nice two hours drive to Airlie beach.

After several kilometres of sugar cane fields we passed by Proserpine and then the detour to Airlie Beach. Arriving at Airlie the views of the Pacific Ocean are just marvellous.

We are staying at the Airlie apartments, excellent view and quite comfortable, undercover car park for the car.

In the afternoon we went for lunch at the Esplanade and explore a bit of Airlie beach lagoon, then back to the hotel's swimming pool and amazing sunset views.Read more

Today we set sail for the islands. Starting at Abell Point Marina, we used Cruise Whitsunday which was actually the only option available (not a great service overall)

after 30 minutes the first stop was DayDream island. Smaller than Hamilton, it is more just a big hotel with really good facilities including an Aussie themed mini golf, swimming pools everywhere. we spent three hours here, used the swimming pool, got photos with the little mermaid and then again on the ferry to Hamilton island.

Another 30 minutes to Hamilton island. Hamilton is far bigger than Daydream, more like a little town. The Airport is also located here.

Long queues to get some lunch and get on the courtesy bus, we opted for a golf buggy to go around. Spent some time in the afternoon at Catseye beach.

When it was time to get back to Airlie we realised it was nearly impossible to get on board of the ferry as they were running over capacity, we had to stood up queuing under the intense sun for 45 minutes before we could get onto a ferry, terrible serviceRead more

Whitehaven beach

And we had to use the bloody ferry again. The usual stops at Daydream and Hamilton islands and then to Whitehaven.

The beach was worth the visit, white sand, blue waters....perfect for a photo. The crew of the ferry informed us the waters were plagued with marine stingers..... so they provide us with swimming suits for protection. The waters were so still, like a pool and crystal clear, so amazing.

We stayed here for 2 hours and then back. Most of the people left the ferry at Hamilton, not us after yesterday's disappointment. We went back to Airlie and spent the rest of the afternoon at the Esplanade.Read more

The big mango bowen

Last day in our quick trip. After checking out we drove one hour North of Airlie to the township of Bowern, just to see the big Mango. Unfortunately we couldn't try the famous mango sorbets as the placed was closed but got some good photos... Then the 3-hour drive back to Mackay.Read more
