  • Exploring... Nambucca Heads.

    9 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Daryl took us for a day trip today.
    First stop Nambucca Heads.
    WOW!
We stopped at a high point so we could see the views.
    This is simply stunning.
You could see sandbars, the estuary, the different coloured water showing the different depth.
Surf was breaking but no surfers.
That’s because, said Daryl, it’s very ‘sharkie’.
    Oh.
    Lovely.
Apparently the very aggressive Bull Sharks ( think slightly smaller white pointers ) hang around the entrance to the estuary to catch fish going in and out.
That’s also where the surfers would be.
The Bull Sharks also swim up the estuary.
    Hmmmm.
Didn’t like that much but the views were amazing!!!!!

    Then down to the breakwater.
This is a long built up pedestrian walk along the water’s edge.
    Fascinating.
All the huge rocks that form part of this breakwater are allowed to be painted/ decorated by families.
And it looked so colourful and simply wonderful as you wandered along.

  • Bellingen

    9 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    Into Bellingen, an old town.
Wonderful Main Street with so many original buildings.
Daryl sent us to the oldest building...used to be Hardware, Groceries, Haberdashery ... you name it, they had it back then.
    Wonderful old shop, huge.
And magnificent old counters and old wooden staircase to the next floor up.
    Wonderful things sold here.
    Too many to contemplate.
Though Emily did buy a hat.
    A great hat... brown.
( I think she bought it because she left her black one in the car.)

On to the old cheese factory ....
    Wonderful wander around here.
Fantastic leather goods shop... wanted a pilots hat/cap/hoodie thing.
    ( Think Amelia Earhart )
Well no one else would have one on the beach!
    Thought better of it.

    Onto to Dorrigo.
    Windy road.
Going up and up through the trees.
And then it levelled out for the most beautiful, flat dairy country ... all onto of this high mountain. We drove through this for a while, to the lookout for a view of the Great Dividing Range.
    WOW!
    Just so majestic!

  • Rainforest and Crystal Falls.

    9 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Onto Dorrigo and into the rainforest.
We followed a trail down, down, down through the forest.
Marvelling at the huge trees, so many with buttress roots.
And so many with huge vines wrapping their way around and around the trunks of trees to reach the sunlight.
A very long walk amongst the ferns and trees and we come out at a wonderful suspension bridge over the gully.
With the Crystal Falls on our right.

  • Behind the Falls...

    9 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

    Loved this.
Emily followed the path down behind the falls.
    And we joined her.
Under this huge overhang of rock.
    You could live in there.
    Magnificent cave.
And the water pounding down in front of you.
    It was magic!

Back up the steep trail through the rainforest.
Back to Daryl’s in Sandy Beach to pick up Lacey.
    Back to camp.
    Pretty tired really.
Haven’t done anything much for weeks it seems.
    Great day.

    Emily had left over Indian.
I cooked toasted cheese and ham sandwiches on the George Foreman outside my van.
That was fun in the torchlight.

    In bed, blogging now.
    Lacey is asleep.
Worn out from playing with Scout all day.

    Planning a quiet day tomorrow.
( I am really into this!)
    Forecast, very windy on Tuesday.
Will be taking the awning down and hunkering inside with a good book.

  • Windy Monday.

    10 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

It didn’t start out that way.
But we had seen the forecast.
    60km winds in the afternoon.

So, this morning, with no wind and in brilliant sunshine, we walked along the beach into Whoopi ... to buy coffee.
Because, as it turns out, Emily was out of milk.
    For the second time.
And for the second time, as we are 3/4 along the beach into Woopi, as she explained her ‘no milk’ situation.....
    I said, “I’ve got milk.”

    Twice!
That’s twice she has done that.
    We have 2 fridges.
    I have milk.
    What?
Does she just expect me to eat my milo straight out of the tin with no milk?
( Hang on. I retract that. There is a possibility that she has seen me do that.)
    Anyway ....
    We found this hysterical.
I may not cook but I buy milk!

And twice we have walked along that wonderful beach to buy coffee because she is out of milk.
    Haha.
    I win.

    Did 2 loads of washing.

Emily went to the butchers on her Postie bike.
Asked where can she buy milk.
(Supermarket is a little out of town. Not far. Just not in the Main Street.)
Turns out the Drive In Bottle Shop on the Main Street sells milk.
    Clever man.

    Weather starting to turn.
We rolled up both awnings in preparation for the strong winds.
    Then it started to rain.
Went to get the clothes off the line, thinking where on earth am I going to dry this lot?
    Dryers.
    They have dryers.
    (Honestly, someone’s I worry myself.)
Why did I not know that?

A little worried about shrinking some tops so I handed Emily’s 2 to her to take care of.
And I set up a clothes line in my van.
( Love a project! Thought of you Katrina and your clothes line.)
    Rain coming down...
    Laying on the bed, reading...
And watching the raindrops run down the windows...
Lacey curled up on my feet...
    Heater on the clothes ....
    Perfection.

    Lovely, lovely day.

    Late afternoon.
    The rain had stopped.
We headed down the beach for some exercise.

Emily had a ball on her One Wheel.

  • Quiet Tuesday

    11 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    Up at 7.15am.
    Walked Lacey.
There was a huge high tide and all the sandbars in the lake had disappeared under the water.
We haven’t seen it like that since the creek exit into the sea was blocked 2 weeks ago.
    Looked wonderful.

Emily had a big sleep in and was in her bus most of the day.
    I went grocery shopping.
Walked out of the supermarket to find a Supagas Ute parked on the road verge near Tin Tin.
    It was Daryl.
Together we rang My Aged Care to get all types of services that will be available to Mum when she goes home.
She had previously been assessed and I had authority to speak so got all the information that we needed.

    Drove back into Woopi.
    Wandered a few shops.
Turns out I like buying things.
    Bought a jumper.
Then thought I had better stop.
    Back to camp.
Separated the groceries between our 2 fridges.
    ( Gave Emily her milk!)

Put the green sun shelter back up.
( I love that shelter with the table and chairs there. Use it a lot.)
And the forecast is now for very little wind the next few days.
And temps of 21, 25 and 25 ... changing to cooler on Friday.

    It was windy last night.
Felt very snug in my van. 😁

    Had lunch.
Walked Lacey around the creek and beach.
Pulled out my back deck and spent a good portion of the afternoon reading on that in the sun.
It’s very good for making friends.
People stop and ask me about the deck as they wander past.

Met new people to the park who have an inflatable paddle board.
They offered the use of their hand pump to Emily for hers.
The inflatable paddle board came with a large hand pump but due to storage restrictions in the bus, Emily has only bought her electric pump, thinking that would work well.
But it does not have the seal to stop all the air rushing out as she disconnects the valve.
The hand pump is a special design apparently.
So up till now she hasn’t been able to really use the paddle board.
Tried at the Hume Weir but it was not inflated enough.
    And she fell off!

So this man helped Emily blow up her paddle board and it is as hard as a rock now.
Tomorrow may be the “Paddle Board Day.”

    Cut my hair.
    That was a bit awkward.
Crouched in Tin Tin, on the floor, in front of a 3 inch by 4 inch mirror, by torchlight, trying not to get loose hair on the bed.
No idea what it will look like in the daylight.
Might be wearing a hat for a fortnight yet!

    That’s it.
    In bed, blogging.
    And ready to read.

    Oh.
    Oh.
Been searching for years for whale vomit ...
    ( Stay with me.)
    Ambergris.
    Used in perfumes.
    WORTH A FORTUNE.
Washes up on beaches very, very, very rarely.
After floating for years in the sea.
Read about it ages ago, so once I figured that all the pirates treasure chests had probably been found, I started looking for whale vomit as I wandered beaches.
    Can be a yellow colour.

    So ....
What is that yellow thing up on the high tide line?
A hard rock type thing, with smaller stones embedded in it?
That Lacey is going absolutely nuts over?
    ( Dogs love ambergris.)

    So I bought it home.
    Don’t think it is ...
But I like to think it might be.
( Bit like my 2 pound diamond ring from the antique shop in Stratford on Avon.
    Don’t think it is.
But I like to think it might be.)
    That’s the fun bit!

So just in case this weird yellow soft rock thing is ambergris, it’s not sitting on my outdoor table.
I have this treasure safely stored under the bed.

    Nigh nigh.

  • Morning walk.

    12 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Emily had an early morning meeting so we walked after that about 8am.
    Very high tide.
Not a ripple on the lake.
And not a sandbar in sight.
The creek was barely making it into the sea so, as it was so shallow ( 3 inches ) we turned left along the beach over the creek.

    Beautiful.
Hardly a person in sight unless they had a dog.
Overcast morning but a beautiful place to walk.

Headed to Sandy Beach to Daryl’s house to pick up 4 parcels that had arrived for Emily.
( I am still waiting for my Directors Chair to arrive!)

    1) A part for her One Wheel
    2) A case of wine
    3) I can’t remember .... still stuck on the 12 bottles of wine.
    4) A necklace.

The necklace has separate metal discs that are engraved with all the countries she has visited.
    Looks great!

Saw Daryl driving towards us as we headed there.
He did a u-turn and we stopped to chat.
    Was lovely.
I was thinking that this just doesn’t happen when I live in Berwick.
Making the most of it while I can.

  • Paddle Board Day!!!!

    12 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Once we got back to camp, I headed into Coffs.
I was chasing a $6 long lead for Lacey.
It is wire encased in plastic so she has a long lead to be tied up with at camp.
    K-Mart had them.
    So off I went.
My first time driving into Coffs.
Still get so stressed when I have to drive anywhere.
But, unless the Victorian border is closed for me going home, I really have to drive places.
So off to Coffs I went.
    It was simple.
Pulled into the big shopping centre.
    Walked in.
    No K-Mart at this one.
    Off to another one ....
    In the centre of Coffs.
    There you go.
    Wasn’t that hard, was it?
    Bought 2 leads.
    Home again.
    Lovely drive.

These leads are about 5 metres long, clips at each end.
Only used one at the moment.
I have pegged each end into the ground, one end at Bumper and one end at Tin Tin and attached Lacey’s lead to it so she can run between our sites now.
She is one happy little dog.

Emily wasn’t home when I got back so off I went in search of her.
There she was, standing up on the paddle board on the lake!
    Wonderful.
    She loved it!
The wind had sprung up so a great workout paddling against the wind and waves.

    Yippee for Paddle Board Day!!!

I’m off to explore Red Rock tomorrow.
    About 30 minutes north.
    Daryl says it is stunning.
Forecast .... 24 and sunny, wind easing in the afternoon.

  • Perfection.

    13 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Was going sight seeing today.
But why travel when you have perfection right at your doorstep?
    25 degrees.
Not a cloud in the sky.

Emily and I walked the beach in the morning after I had put a load of washing in.
    The beach was magnificent.
Met many of the same people and their dogs on our walk.
We are all really getting to know the familiar faces ( both human and dog.)

    Emily worked til noon.
( Because of Covid, not a lot of work for her.)

After a hasty ‘wrap’ lunch, it was into the wetsuits and off to the lake.
    Still no sandbars.
Water barely making it’s way to the sea.
That’s how I like it, as it turns out.
You are paddling in some areas in 6 inches of water.

Emily saw a stingray from her higher vantage point on her paddle board.
I had heard that sometimes they are able to make their way into the lake.
We decided they were probably OK.

    We went out twice today.
And jumped in the surf as well.
    Not really a swim yet.
More waist deep as I has to hold Lacey above the waves.
If we go tomorrow, we will leave her in the bus.

Being on the lake was sensational.
And so great that we can now go together.
Paddling for a while and then just letting the flow of the water take us.
It was flowing towards the sea.
    Just can’t quite get out..

Sat around camp in bathers and towels.
    This is camping!

Amazed at how different the evenings are.
I usually camp at Phillip Island during Daylight Savings.
    Light till 8.30 - 9 o’clock.
Here it is dark at 6pm.
We usually then just head to our separate vans.

But I am late blogging tonight.
    It’s 9.10pm.

Sensational, sunny, kayaking, paddle boarding, sitting round camp day.
    Perfection.

Only slipped (jumped) into the water once today.
I grab her as she floats past.
I have her on a lead attached to a belt around my waist.
Don’t want to lose her in the water.
She looks too good riding ‘point’.

    Very tired dog tonight.

  • Friday!

    13 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Emily had work till about 11.30am so Lacey and I headed for a long walk near the lake and along the beach.
I could hear this haunting music.
I checked my phone in the back pocket ...
    “Nope. Not me.”
It was a man playing a trumpet on the boat ramp into the lake.
It was so clear and echoed over the water and sounded just amazing.
In the still of the morning, what a treat!
So we wandered and soaked up the music!

    Magnificent morning and hot!
    Could not believe it.
Rain was forecast for about 4pm so were disappointed when clouds rolled in early to block the sun.
Emily came out of Bumper most disappointed.... and then they just went away.
    Wow.
Stunning blue skies again and hot.
    Into bathers and wetsuits ...
    And off onto the lake.
Still water covering all the sandbars ...
So much fun to kayak and paddle board.

The main expanse of the lake goes back to the left into the land, if that makes sense.
The smaller part of the lake to the right becomes the creek and flows into the sea.
We hadn’t been able to paddle to the right before as it was too shallow.
But that is where the water is that turquoise colour and there are several big rocks in the water.

So Emily turned right and we paddled towards this turquoise water and rocks .... and the sea.
We pulled our boat and board onto the far side of this creek and played on the rocks while wading (me) and swimming (Emily) in that beautiful crystal clear water.
    Lacey explored the bush land.

    It was wonderful.

Then turned our backs to the sea and set off to the great expanse of the lake.
    We paddled and drifted.
Paddled to the old wooden bridge way down the lake and then past the bridge to see the lake fork to our left and right.
    So, so peaceful.
You simply cannot hear another sound, just the water from the paddles and the birds.
I can see how people get hooked on this.
    It is just magic.

Paddled back towards the sea and more pulling into shore and swimming.
Then left our boats there and headed for the sea.
    So funny.
There I was kneeling in the waves, getting accustomed to the water and was knocked straight over and under.
    Those waves pack a punch!
This water is so crystal clear, you simply cannot believe it.
    No seaweed anywhere.
And mad kayakers rowing out past the breakers into the open sea to fish.
(Apparently the fishing is wonderful sound a rocky island about a kilometre off shore. Too far out for me. I like the lake!)
Lacey was loose on the sand.
    She did not go anywhere.
Eyes on us all the time.
Coming towards us as the water receded.
Bolting back to dry sand as another wave came in.

Emily decided to carry her board back to camp but, with Lace riding point again, I rowed back across the Lake.
    More fun.

    Lunch.
    More work (Emily)
    I gave Lacey a bath.

Then we all walked the beach to Woolgoolga and back in the late afternoon.
Rounded the headland past Woolgoolga just to see what was there.
    A very small rocky cove...

Dinner, pork chops and the best potato something ever!
Emily now tends to wash up as well now that she has hot water in the bus.
I have got off this cooking thing very easy!

    Bed.
    Blog.

    That’s it.
Not sure what is on for tomorrow.
    Still saying rain is coming.

Didn’t take the camera in the kayak today so few photos.

That’s the frame of my hammock in the Fig Tree photo.

  • Fun exploring day...

    15 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Walked the beach into Woolgoolga to have breakfast.
    Beautiful sunny day.
Were expecting more rain but it appears to have passed over us.
Lovely breakfast in our favourite cafe.
Sat in their outdoor section, on the “Stage” no less.
However, it may be that a large cooked breakfast is not for us anymore.
We usually have fruit and orange juice when we are at camp.
    Sometimes avocado on toast.
Walking back along the beach both felt slightly overdone.
    And lethargic.

    Hard to get moving again.
But I wanted to see a Red Rocks.
Fixed my phone holder to a part of the dash so I can see the phone again.
(Supaglued it next to the speedometer.... there was a blank spot there. Not the phone, the magnetic phone holder thing.)
    Worked well.
Packed things away in a Tin Tin and off we went.
    I drove.

Very small town Red Rocks, about 25 minutes away.
Magnificent park right next to the water.
It was another river meeting the sea.
    Sandbars, crystal clear water.
    People swimming, picnicking, boating....
    Just beautiful.
But I wanted to see the red rocks.
Asked a local... off we went again.
    “Straight ahead”, she said.
But straight ahead was a caravan park.
    It can’t be through there.
So we did a complete circle round the tiny town.... back to the caravan park.
Meanwhile the lady was waving us on..... that way, that way.
So we drove through the caravan park to get to the red rocks beach.

It’s not often you drive through a caravan park to get to the car park by the sea.

    Wandered the trail.
Came to a beautiful little cove with some red rocks.
It was stunning, but slightly underwhelming.
We walked, paddled... it was a beautiful tiny cove.

Feeling slightly hard done by, we were about to leave and that same lady was on the beach with her husband and little daughter.
Turns out she had grown up there and was back visiting.
She pointed us in the direction of a track up to a look out.
    “Why not?” we thought.

    WOW!
    WOW!
    WOW!

This is why Daryl said to go to Red Rocks.

    Amazing beaches in both directions.
Amazing, huge red rock cliffs and pounding waves.
You could see where the river met the sea.
You could see for miles and miles and miles.

And we saw a small shark .... heading for the river mouth.

  • Red Rocks

    15 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Daryl refers to some areas as “Sharkie”
Apparently river mouths are one of these places.
There are a lot of smaller fish coming in and out of the river as the tide changes, a good feeding ground.

As we watched these pounding waves on Red Rocks beach, we decided it was probably “Sharkie”.
There was not a surfer or swimmer in sight.
And those waves looked amazing to us.
I think local knowledge is a very important thing.

    These views were stunning!
We stayed on the beach for ages watching the waves pounding the rocks.
But once we headed up the trail to the top of the headland, we were mesmerised.
Walking very carefully, and not to close to that sheer drop, you could see forever to the north ....
And again, forever to the south.
It was on top of the cliff that we could see the small shark making it’s way through the water.

The lifebuoy was slightly worrying as well as slightly reassuring... I couldn’t work out which.

  • Home and dinner.

    15 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Back to the van and once again, drove through the caravan park into the town.
Icy pole each and wandered the park overlooking the river.
Wonderful shop for the caravan park ( and town, I think. )

    I loved this place.
The caravan park was stunning... a bit old fashioned and perhaps ‘beachy’ but perfect.
Beautiful big trees, lovely grass everywhere .... a real country, beachside caravan park.
    And so big....
And right next to that shop and park and river.

    I could live there.

Matt and Jess and Emily cooked fish for dinner in the BBQ dinner shed.
We sat round laughing and talking for hours.
They have a trial at a big club in Coffs on Tuesday.
Matt behind the bar in the ‘gambling’ section.
Jess in front of house doing bar work.
Hope it works out for them.
The blueberry work is dropping off as they are unable to transport them interstate.

    Great night.

If anyone is reading, I did write a blog today. It’s just not showing up.
Better be there when I wake up tomorrow!

Monday night update .... didn’t load, did it?
    Wonder what I did?

  • Car Wash Sunday.

    16 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    Magnificent day again.
    Walked Lacey on the beach.
Daryl came for a chat at the picnic table by the lake.
Because of Covid, no visitors are allowed in the Park.
Luckily, this picnic table is just across the road from our sites.
We went for a walk on the beach.
Daryl had been kayaking early this morning on Sandy Beach after watching the sun rise.
    Quite small waves today.

Emily went off to have the second part of her tattoo done.

So I then headed off to visit Daryl and Martine and Scout.
They were working in the garden, having a lovely time.
I washed Tin Tin at their house.
    He came up a treat!
Long time and a lot of miles since the last wash.
I also put that Rain-x water repellent that Martine had on the front windscreen, side windows and back window.
Love the way it makes the water bead and race off the window when it rains.

    Drove back to camp.
Passed the Tattooists on the way.
Emily told me later that she looked out the window and thought “That’s a nice van. Oh hang on, that’s Winnie.”
*Winnie, the Wannabe Winnebago .... when it was hers.
*Didn’t really want to change the name so.... Win Tin Tin .... when I took the van for mine.
( Had to explain about orphaned little boys, hero Alsatian dogs and Fort Apache .... she’s young.)
    *Tin Tin for short.
    Gets complicated.
Just as well we know what we are on about.

    Had some lunch.
Read for a while and promptly fell asleep on my bed for an hour.
    Very nice.

    Emily came back.
    Tattoo still not finished.
    Another appointment in a month.
    ( He’s very busy!)

    Left over noodles for dinner.

    That’s it.

Did not take a single photo today.
    Wow.

Will look up some old ones.

  • Sunday and Monday blog...

    17 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

As it turns out... the blog did load.
    I had the wrong date.
Fixed it now, at home, in the Folly. ...Monday 28th September.
    Been home a week.
    Not liking it much.....

    Anyway .....

    Short version of Sunday...
    Walked the beach.
    Daryl came to visit.
Walked with him on the beach.
    Emily went to the Tattooist.
    I drove to Daryl’s.
    Washed Tin Tin.
    It looks amazing.
    Long time between washes!

I drove past the Tattooist on the way home.
Emily happened to be looking out the window.
    “That’s a nice van ... Oh ... it’s ours!”
And it is a nice van.

Funnily enough, I did not take a single photo on Sunday.
Just a lovely, lovely sunny day ... again.

So that was Sunday in a nutshell.

    Monday....
    Wonderful relaxing day.
Very sunny ... 21 degrees ... no wind.
    Walked the beach with Emily.
Lacey is right into crossing the creek now.
Seems to be able to judge the depth now and leaps right in.

Met up with other dog walkers that we have got to know.
‘Cody’ especially, a black poodle cross.
Lacey and Cody have a wonderful time together.
Greet each other like long lost friends.

    Emily worked.
I drove to Woolworths for groceries.
I am getting a kick out of driving now.

    Lunch.
Long walk on the beach with a Emily.
Then set up the deck and read.
This involves setting up the ladder under the deck .... for support ... just in case.
    ( My fire escape.)
Emily was reading at her table in the sun.

Funny comments as people walked past...
Young man who is a painter working on one of the cabins ...
    “ Living the life!”
    Older man walking past ...
“ When I die, I want to be reincarnated as you.”

It is just so absolutely relaxing, and everyone talks to me ... and Lacey curls up on my lap.

    Dinner.
    Then this.

    Such a relaxing day.
    I am absolutely loving it.
Extended my booking to 19th September, 2 days after Emily’s 41st Birthday.

    Mum home from Rehab today.
    Seems very well.

    That’s it.

    Oh ...
There is a very strong possibility that I am not going to go to sleep easily tonight.
Had the most wonderful crumbed chops and roast veges for dinner.
While I have been laying here, I have eaten licorice, salted peanuts ( by the handful ) and those Darrell Lea big orange chocolate balls are looking me straight in the eye.

    Could be a long night.

  • Lovely Monday

    18 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    What is normal now.
    Up about 8.30am.
Off for a long walk along the beach.
Turned left so crossed the creek and onwards along the beach.
Met up with our doggy friends.
    Everyone had a play.
Also met a couple near the creek who had stopped to say hello to Lacey on the deck yesterday.
They were heading to Brisbane but Covid stopped them so they have had to stay in their family holiday house in Woolgoolga.
Their Grandfather bought the land in 1940 ... and paid £500 for it then.
    And built a house.
They have been coming for family holidays here forever.
They were looking to move to Brisbane from Melbourne.
Now ... they are thinking that country NSW is magnificent.
    Woolgoolga especially.

    It is just paradise.

Went to Mitre 10 and Emily bought a fan for Bumper.
It is getting a bit warm up here.
And because she has her cat Winston inside the bus, she can only open the windows with the security guard flywire on them.

So we sat and mulled this over.
I can just open the back door of Tin Tin and get a magnificent breeze through.
    So ....
“You could get a guy to come out and install more security fly screens on all the windows”
    Or...
“They must sell that somewhere. We could do it ourselves”
    Or ...
“What about inserts for the open windows to stop Winston getting out, but let the breeze through?”
    So...
    Off to Bunnings in Coffs.
( They are open up here, you know.)

    The photos show the results.
Every window now open, including those in the cabin, and cat proof!

The breeze through the bus was so good, Emily had to shut some of the windows!
    Absolutely brilliant result!!!!
    Safe cat.
    And cool bus.

And for no money at all.
    Do it yourself!
    We love it.
Did have to buy a pair of wire cutters though.
    That hurt.
    But so worth the result.

Matteo and Jessie called in after their trial for the jobs.
They were both offered positions so they are thrilled.
But they will be moving to a caravan park in Coffs to be close to work.
    We will miss them.
The place they are working, the company has 500 venues around Australia so fantastic for them.
They will be able to get jobs at any of these places now as they travel around.

    Lovely night.
Mum going well for her first full day at home.
Emily sorted out a few Netflix shows she should enjoy so she was excited about those.

My bamboo mattress topper has arrived at a Daryl’s.
Will go and pick that up tomorrow.
Just trying to upgrade my sleeping experience.
I am comfortable but Emily swears by hers so I thought it worth a try.
( My right shoulder may thank me.)

Have been waiting more than 2 weeks for the delivery of my Captain’s chair.
    Not happy Jan.

    Bought WD40.
    (That hurts as well)
    Oiled my sliding van door...
    Slides magnificently now.
Also put wedges under the deck...
It stops banging against the back door as I drive now.
Possibly could have thought of that before but good things come to those that wait.

    Bed.....

  • Lazy Wednesday

    19 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    Hate to say this ...
But I had to look at yesterday’s blog to figure out what day it was.
And as it turned out.... yesterday was actually Tuesday.
    Haha.

    Yep.
    Camping is hard.

    Up at 8am.
    Magnificent day.
    24 degrees.
Walked along the beach into Woopi.
Wanted to sign that petition to object to high rises here.
Did that and chatted to the couple we met yesterday ...
    Emily bought a smoothie.
And back along the beach to camp.

In the meantime, Daryl had delivered my bamboo topper for my bed.
So had fun making the bed up with that.

As I had so many pieces to my mattress ... foam mattress, egg carton type foam topper, sleeping bag to stop any chill from under the bed and then a sheet ... it was always hard to get everything in place.
This bamboo topper came with it own elastic edging so once the topper was in place, the elastic sides cover and tuck in under all my other stuff and just keep everything as one mattress.
    Brilliant.

    Seems very comfortable.
Am laying on the bed as I write.

Lacey was a bit upset to come in tonight.
Emily has joined a ‘friend’ group and has a girl, Crystal over for dinner.
Lacey thought she should stay and help entertain.

    Turned very windy this afternoon.
Took the sun shelter down just in case.

    People moved in behind me.
This man was determined to get back right to the edge of the site.
    Nearly ran over my kayak!
And that is on my site.
    Fun to watch though.
    After I moved the kayak...

    Daryl rang.
I am off to Grafton with him tomorrow.
    Really looking forward to that.

The ‘petition’ couple called in after dark to check out the bus and van.
    Had a great chat.

Talked to lots of people in the park and on the beach.
    Very friendly place.

Emily has decided to take over my site when I leave.
Much nicer than her site that is just a square piece of grass.
Fine as we have the 2 sites together at the moment.
But not much for when she is on her own.
This site has the magnificent fig tree that will give her shade... and a lovely outlook.
Lots of people also walk past this site and stop to chat.

    That’s it, I think.

    Update on the Director’s Chair.
    Still not here.
The complaints department of the courier company seem to be avoiding me.

  • Road Tripping ...

    20 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Looked up what day it is.
    It’s Thursday.

Daryl picked me up at the entrance to the Park at 8.20am.
Surprised me by saying he is taking me to Yamba, slight detour before to go to Grafton.

On the way, we passed a turn off to New Italy.
How did it get that name?
In 1880, three hundred and forty Italians set sail for New Ireland near Papua New Guinea.
They were misled by the captain of the ship and one hundred and twenty-three died on board before the remainder were rescued by Australian seamen.
After recovering, they surveyed and claimed a 3000 acre parcel of land and set up ‘New Italy’.
    Wow.

Yamba is about 109km from Woolgoolga up the Pacific Motorway.
Double lanes and an easy drive.
Daryl was explaining how they are building this motorway so occasionally we would be detoured back onto the single land highway.
But still, a beautiful day and great company.
Yamba is at the mouth of ‘The Big River’, the Clarence River.
Named after the Duke of Clarence as it turns out.
    (We looked it up)
    Discovered in 1831.
I can see why it is known as The Big River.
    It is enormous.
    It looks like the ocean.

They have constructed the road from island to island to island to cross the river and get you into Yamba.
Yamba is a small coastal town with a lovely beachy Main Street and 2 Lighthouses high on the headland.
There is a huge new bridge, really high in the air to allow for shipping.
Traffic on the old bridge would be stopped as the centre was raised for the ships.
The old bridge is still there to see.
Huge, huge old columns ... it looks stunning.
This was a very quick visit ... Emily and I have decided we are going back tomorrow.
Daryl just wanted to make sure I knew how lovely it was.
    He was technically working.

Checked out the mouth of the river.
They have built 2 breakwaters that extend into the ocean.
These stop the silt build up and ships can travel down this enormous river to Grafton.
    Beautiful.
Will let you know more tomorrow.

Onto Grafton, passing through a small town called Maclean.
This town has a proud Scottish heritage and every electricity pole has a clan tartan painted on the base of it.
    Over 200.
And you can get a map and locate ‘your’ tartan if so inclined.

Into Grafton over the new bridge.
Runs parallel to the old one that is still in use
    Looks amazing.

Grafton was the very busy port in the past as shipping was the most effective means of transport.
Times have changed and apparently, the population is declining.
Old building, great Main Street and, of course Jacarandas everywhere.
    Unfortunately not in bloom yet.
Grafton have a huge Jacaranda Festival every year.
It has been cancelled this year due to corona.

Daryl went to see a client and I wandered the Main Street and parks.
    Just an hour but lovely.
Then Daryl took me to see a huge old Hotel right on the edge of the Clarence River, at the end of the Main Street.
We went inside and he pointed out a photo showing the river level in the 2013 floods.
Have a look at the photo on the next blog.

Then a quick trip to Daryl’s favourite butcher and back to Woopi.
    At camp by 1.30.
Daryl had more appointments in town.

    Great road trip.
    Loved all the sights!

  • Some more photos....

    20 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Look for the the outdoor seating area hanging out from the hotel, overlooking the Clarence River in the main photo.
The flood waters were over the floor of that outdoor dining area in 2013.
How high did the river have to rise to reach that height!!!
Grafton Main Street was also flooded.

I bought new earrings in Grafton.

I rang the Courier company to check on the status of my Director’s Chair.
Had been delivered to Daryl’s 15 minutes ago.
    Yah!!!
Lacey and I sped off in Tin Tin to pick it up.

Much fanfare at camp as I cut the packaging...
    Bit exciting.
    Great chair.
    Wrong colour.
    I ordered green.
    Got blue.

    My sun shelter is green.
    My hammock is green.
I wanted the green Director’s Chair.

    Regrouped.
    Looks nice by the van.
Who cares what colour it is.
    It’s very comfortable!

So we ate outside in the twilight tonight.
    I sat in my chair!

    Lovely day.
Had fun with Lacey going crazy on the beach fetching a stick.
    She’s never done that before.
She’s been watching all the other dogs.

Oh ... and only 4 hours from Brisbane when we were in Yamba.
    That put things into perspective.

  • Road Tripping ... Again!

    21 agosto 2020, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    Left for Yamba at 10.30am.
    I drove.
Marvellous roads up to Yamba, the Old Princess Highway in parts, because the Princess Motorway is still being completed in parts.
Other than that, on the wonderful Motorway.

Hemmed in by trees for the first half of the trip and then the countryside opens up to wonderful sugarcane fields.
Really makes you think you are up north.
Huge raised sections of the Motorway over flood plains.
All just lush grass at the moment but must really flood when it does.
Will watch the news intently now that I have seen the area.

Travelled along the road connecting the 3 islands in the HUGE Clarence River into Yamba.
Amongst the cane fields, we drove past the old caravan on the side of the road that serves as the bus stop shelter for school children.
    It’s priceless.
    See the photo.

Directions on ‘maps’ working well on my phone, now able to sit next to the speedo in my van.
I can see it well and it syncs with the radio so I hear it well amongst the music.

Up the very steep hill to the park and lighthouse to look at the view of the river mouth with the 2 breakwaters.
    Magnificent.

Then down the hill to what turned out to be Yamba main beach, complete with a tidal filled swimming pool build amongst the incredible flat, black rocks.
    Lawn to the beach.
An old surf lifesaving building, complete with cafe.
And a toilet block built to look like bathing boxes.

The sun was shinning and we wandered.
    Loved the pool!
The whole beach is just stunning.

Sat on the lawn and had chips, coffee and a milkshake watched closely by 2 magpies...
We shared the chips with them.

Did a bit of touring by driving around.
    Beautiful beaches everywhere.
Not to mention some of the houses.

    Off to the Main Street.
Parked and walked the street to the end.
It ends at the river and a wonderful caravan park is right there.
We walked past that to the breakwater and along the edge of the sea, marvelling at the surfers and a man doing incredible surf rides on a stand up paddle board.
We sat on these enormous black, flat rocks and just watched.
Then, further along, we climbed up on the rocks and walked to the cliff edge to watch the waves breaking on the rocks.
    Wonderful.

Twice today, we were swooped by very determined birds.
    ( Not magpies.)
I think we were too close to nests.
At the pool and again as we passed the caravan park.
They weren’t concerned if it was just us but they were attacking Lacey.
    They actually connected with her.
(Glad their claws didn’t get tangled in those curls. Would have been very messy!)
She wasn’t worried but Emily was.
    She wouldn’t walk with us!

All that passed... (and Emily rejoined us!!!!)

Wandered back up the Main Street.
    And headed home.

    Emily drove back.
    Wonderful drive again.

Emily went ‘One Wheeling’ along the beach to Woolgoolga and back.
    So excited.
That was the first time she had ridden that far.

Talked to a couple in the Park and they loved the inside of Emily’s bus.
    Had a great chat.

Emily and I discussed how a lot more people talk to me as I am sitting on my deck than talk to her sitting at her table.
So we decided that she needs a deck.
    Got it all planned.
Off to Bunnings tomorrow for materials!

    Great day.
    Loved it all.
