    Near Devil's Tower... SD / WY.

    Camped in a forest of ponderosa, young and not too mature, but interesting enough. The gully right beneath the campsite has aspen and a number of them have died. Connie pointed out that an aspen is a very short-lived tree. It grows from the roots of others, the roots spread underground and shoot up and they don't live too long apparently.
    For better or for worse, it seems that scriptwise and movie making wise there's being a major decision made very shortly. I've turned it over to the Universe, we'll see what transpires. one door closes another door opens. I'm ready. We head for the Devil's Tower shortly. Apparently it is about 15 miles away.
    The smoke that is reportedly covering New York City is rather disturbing, yet again the consequences of our actions in climate crisis and and forestry. Ties in again with those flames I saw in my NDE.

    Devils Tower... WOW!

    While we had a late start out of the campground the 25 miled to Devil's Tower and walking around it was quite amazing. About to 50 to 60 million years of erosion and pressure points created the vertical strata believe it or not.
    Believe it or not I also found a patch to go with it to prove that I'd actually been to the Devil's Tower I never knew this but I'd seen it on paper money and I now realize it was the very first national monument that this country ever did designated. I can well believe the spiritual implications for indigenous people it, really is a rather moving Monument to Nature.    Lue lisää

    Deadwood shootout on Main Street? That crowd lining the street at noon, was quiet, tense. All queried why they were there replied in similar vein, "The shootout in Deadwood... at Noon."
    Soon there they were, six guns dangling, but wait, a horde of youngsters were sworn in as Deputies to help catch the crook. And so, the production ran... in the center of Main Street, Deadwood, South Dakota, as the crowd gasped in realization... a real 'live, shootout in Deadwood....
    WAIT! Let's re-read that! Shootout... but NO LIVE ammo? In Dead Wood. Hmmm...?
    All is well, Connie and Jack survived the shootout!

    South Dakota, post Deadwood Gulch...

    Yesterday at Deadwood (Deadwood Gulch?) was quite an education. Bit of a rip-off when it comes to the typical tourist, but hey.... come snow and Deadwood... dies.
    Black Hills National Forest, Roublaix Lake, campground. Started raining last night, Friday night, and basically just has not stopped. Typical Cape June - July drizzle, aka Border Collie is waiting with the leash in his mouth: "... this is take me for a nice long walk, weather...." Cool, damp, wet. Time to read up on the Parks recently visited, time to get frustrated at not being able to get updates on-line... why? That's what 'getting away from it all' is about. Or is it?
    Hardly moved out of Chariot. Been mulling and mulling over, for me, is a major decision - or at least, a step back to reconsider. Issue? The hypocrisy, deceit and backstabbing of what I perceive as movie-making. At least one data-point has been reached - Memories is published. Sooo? Now what? Relax, have 'fun'? Truly starting to realize how much 'struggle' has been part of my life. Am I addicted to it? Family warned that it would not be easy - this Freedom concept - better than the guilt of feeling privileged.
    When does a mountaineer reach the summit? How? By never giving up. "From where you are with what you have, do what you can". I thought that was Sir Winston's encouragement to the British during the Blitz, but no, Roosevelt, apparently.
    Just reviewed some of my 'Dailies' shot recently (Cave Creek, Devil's Tower etc al).
    Can I just give this all up? Then again, spending so much time - with so little certainty of any material reward.
    Give up to do what? Write? Certainly... then struggle for years to make a few sales? Then to have the script stolen? ... time to start laughing I suppose.    Lue lisää

    Custer State Park, SD.

    Long but wonderously beautiful day, traveling back and forth through Custer SP, never dreaming SD could be this lovely . All psyched up to see wildlife, esp buffalo, sorry, bison, and not one did we see. Yes, three antelope and a pride of prairie dogs... nothing else.
    All this only spoilt by the visit to Mt. Rushmore. Not to sound like Her Majesty Queen Victoria, but: "... we are not amused". nuff on that issue.
    Long day, but back in Lake Fraudaix campsite. Planning some sketching at the lake tomorrow, if the weather holds.

    06/12/23: Lake Foubaix, SD

    had a lovely, lovely walk through the woods on the other side of the lake this morning. a number of very interesting issues emerged in the woods. the South Dakota department of forestry really seems to have taken an in-depth look at the health of the forest. my natural traveling partner Connie showed me where trees had been filled and now the sunlight came pouring through to allow for grass and other species to have a chance at at growing. we also saw a spruce sapling with a ponderosa right next to it the aspen. All three and that according to Connie was a very, very good the sign of a recovering forest and a healthy one at that. all this was due to to the greed of clear cutting and cutting out the species of tree that didn't would not produce a dollar. I'm hoping that clear cutting is now a thing of the past.
    I interviewed on camera a woman Denise by name who I said on camera that her husband and herself have been coming here for the past 15 years. she said that when they had first started coming here the slope on the other side of the lake had been decimated by a pine beetle. she I said on camera that the state of South Dakota and their forestry department had certainly come to the help of the Pineville to eradicate the pine beetle. as the clip shows the forest now is truly very healthy looking toto my amateur eye.
    one of the joys of not being chained to a schedule and having to get somewhere with by a certain date is that we was supposed to go down to the Badlands park today then we decided to hang ten and create art so we'll go down to the Badlands tomorrow and possibly stay another day.
    and if I do not get on with editing the dailies I am going to be stuck with too many clips to identify and edit. I certainly haven't given up on the blue highways and the effect of the video of the climate crisis on nature and how to describe that in on the video. I really think I have something going here. the thing I'm almost convinced of unless I receive an option, a real live studio option, I have given up on movie making and all the rest of that crap.
    We should be off to the Badlands tomorrow, that is going to be a long day There might be an entry on Penguins tomorrow, then again there might be multiple if we find ourselves in contact with a Wi-Fi connection, if not stay tuned.

    Theodore Rooseveldt Park (South Unit)...

    From North of Bowman, ND, South to Lowman...
    Nice area we drove through from Black Hills (SD) into ND. Absolutely lovely "East WY.-like" rolling hills, and nothing but grasslands. Came through heavy rain in SD. All the way into just past Buffalo, ND. ( ROAD SIGN READS: " Buffalo [straight on] Bison [Turn right.] I can hear it now: "So, where do you live?"
    " Me? That all depends... scientifically, it's 'Bison'; colloquially, it's 'Buffalo'.
    Actually, two small towns, one scientifically correct ( bison bison), the other, home to them who pets 'furry cows'.
    Got one of the last sites in the South Unit of Roosevelt. I drove from Buffalo in ND to here.
    "And here..." Connie says "... is supper!"
    Supper has been appropriately supped, I crashed for an hours ' cat-nap', weariness snuck up from somewhere...
    Lovely park and area we drove through, just one thing sends chills down my spine - the mere thought of winter, blizzard conditions across these vast, unprotected plains, is enough to send me into spasms of Arizona joy, slobbering at the gills at the thought of balmy AZ winters: "Oh wind if winter comes... Connie and Jack will not be seen in this area."
    Aah yes, just as I was swallowing the last of the mug of tea (had to inaugurate teapot to the Chariot) came suddenly out of the 10:37 dusk, "Knock! Knock!"
    "Who's there?"
    "Buffalo in camp..., come see... " said the neighbour,
    "You mean bison... WAIT, I need my trousers...! Ooh, my camera, unzip camera bag... HURRY! - damn, who needs trousers? "
    Just saw the rump of a 'furry cow' disappearing between a 5th wheel and a truck....
    "Then..." , said neighbour, "...awhile ago (where?) a bear put his (her?) paw through the half opened driver side window, and nearly pulled the car-a-van over - while I was in bed".
    Hmmm...
    Till next time, all is well, "... where the bear, the buffalo and the bison roam..." WAIT... this means that in the very early hours, for me to shuffle off to the 'long-drop', might be ever so...? Ooh dear - now what? "

    Woke up LOW ENERGY and it has not improved much. Might be lack of sunshine.
    Anyway, explored a lot of this park's South Unit. Soon we head for North Unit about 100 miles away, then consult our maps. Eastern Montanta seems dull, sooo, we'll have to see.Lue lisää

    Saturday... whoops interupted by...

    We went off for a stroll around the Camp Loop started speaking to a couple with a funny little trailer they are from Texas. They accompanied us back to see pur Ram van and all hell broke loose with a grumpy old bison bull standing or landing up right next to our table in the campsite. The soup that Connie had made was super and word must have gotten round to the bison herd. Anyway there was only the one old bull. The problem was I left my microphone on the table and bra bison was smack bang next to the microphone. Anyway I managed to get into the van, lay down on the bed, took down the curtain in the rear window and got some rather decent images of brother bison chewing the cudd at our campsite table. I got stills and color and video. Bison has now, due to the encouragement of the ranger mosied on to pasture, probably a little bit greener. I kept my distance! As did Connie and half the rest of the camp too!
    See the camp table with water bottle in foreground and blue camp-stove at other end? See the small dark object near water jug?
    That's my $175 ZOOM microphone - and ONS sniff from brother bison and.... Anyway, the ranger was able to retrieve the mic as well as chase bison off.

    Monday, (North Unit)

    Did a very nice loop to the Oxbow Lookout and end of route.. First major herd of bison. The Oxbow Routefollows the Rim of this Unit, in that COMPLETELY divides Sereen and colourful rolling hills as placid as placid can be and, only a few yards away, the drama, erosion and isolation + pastel colours of the Little Mo (Missouri) River.
    Had very strange, low energy feelings today. Then, finally, identified this weird sensation from years and years ago. Humidity. Ooh, dry heat AZ - how we miss you - fry on !
    Tomorrow, we head West. To emerge somewhere in Northern Wyoming. Can not understand why, intuitively, I am apprehensive of heading for Yellowstone? Too many stupid people abusing Nature or. am I wrong?
    Anyway, till we make a cellular connection again, "alles van die beste" ( Everything of the best.)

    Tuesday, Montana.

    ND to MT. Impressed. Vast. Very nice people. Got in to Custer State Forest, MT. In camp. Cold. Back to long-drops and bring your own TP, but... sites are unmarked, no host, no "thou shalt pay" so... we presume the site is free.
    It got cold fast. We took to Interstates to make time. Yellowstone River is big and flowing fast. Started off the day with blue skies and myself in nightmare negative territory ( apartheid barrel of the gun enforcement issues). However, seemed as the day clouded over (quite heavily) my mood improved.
    I drove from just inside MT. into this camp.
    Near zero traffic. Yes, MT. is big. Yes. it is lovely. Yes, I could live here - for a short summer. Yes, winter in these Northern Plains must be horrendous! Long, windswept rolling grasslands. Zero shelter. Cattle are left to survive with minimum shelter - a few tin plates as wind- break. That is cruel. No - that is horrendous!
    Camp has lovely yellow sweet clover, with pines and watery western sun just breaking through.
    We met our target destination today, plus some more miles.
    Till next... " Breathes there a man with soul so dead, who never to himself has said, 'This be mine own, my adopted land?' "

    Long day through wide open prairie - as green as green can be.
    Spend hours in Buffalo, WY. searching for a place to have Amazon delivered two. There were two. Both stopped after Amazon demands of new technology costs.
    Nice sandwich at coffee shop. After SLAMMING into a huge pothole - and surviving - camped in forest half-way into Bighorns. Forests roads can be very rough. Lovely yellow flowers and blue lupine like flowers.
    Good bit of snow on peaks. Still heavily overcast.    Lue lisää

    Rain last night.
    Spoke to a ranger this a. m. "Yes... the abnormal amount of rain is more than likely attributable to the climate crisis".
    Much like AZ. in reverse. 10 minutes of sunshine, down come the clouds again. AZ. 10 minutes of rain - out comes the sun again.
    Lovely meadow, blue lupines, yellow flowers. This from the "Big Muddy" and dirt road diverging into the meadow.
    Seriously brainstorming how or what I can do with the writing and the clips from 2022 + this year. What? How?

    Negotiating the "Big Muddy"

    Today is Friday, June 23, 2023.
    Both of us picking up negative vibrations from the so-called campground 'host', we upped and we're ready to leave early.
    With soo much rain, with the soil, wherever, absolutely waterlogged, we left Park Circle Camp this morning early - or tried to.
    Enter THE BIG MUDDY ! While pulling into camp two days ago, while driving, I smacked into a massive pothole at about 25 mph, colloquially "The Big Muddy" (according to Forest Ranger),
    Then as we were trying to leave this a.m., the scene replayed itself BUT with a Mercedes camper from CA. STUCK. A Taiwanese couple and a five year-old. Nearby campers piled in and we carried rocks, to fill the hole. They got out with lots of help and covered in mud - or the female component was! Then it was our turn to negotiate The Big Muddy! We planned and steered and I guided, while Connie revved and put her foot down - and front-wheel drive and rugged tires on RAM VAN got us through with flying colours - rocks and mud went flying too! Well done Connie, WELL DONE CHARIOT MAJOR!
    Found another nearby campground. Very wet. Managed to find a dry site. Here for three nights - leave Monday.
    Well, our site was dry until just after noon when the thunderstorm struck. Now, the table, fire grate, the nice dry area for eating outside, etc. looks more like a swimming pool.
    Ooh, the campground host says we could have wifi, "...up and onto the road, turn right, and just before the '50 MPH' sign and sharp corner, there is a pull out. You could get wifi there."    Lue lisää

    Sunday, sunshine, sortof.

    Lovely scenes of snow on Big Horns, meadows, fences. Images in mono, colour and v/clips.
    Starting to cloud over.
    We both sketched at the side of the highway, working in the shadow of the Chariot.
    Met a woman from Pretoria. Typical Afrikaner. She has her photos on FineArtAmerica.com as well.
    Connie says the pastel I did this a.m. (LONG HORNS ALPINE MEADOW) is the best she's seen me do (!) [See attached] We'll see.
    I sprayed fixative and fixed it, now the colours seem darker. I can work over one or two places.
    When seeing image first time with limited non-verbal reactions... mouths tend to open - and stay open for awhile.
    Rather pleasing ego salve.

    We're extending our stay here till 11:59 (am) Thursday.

    Rained again last night. We planned on scaling a fence to get a different perspective of the alpine meadow, BUT, meadows have grass, in this case, longish grass - longish wet grass now. Campsite is still waterlogged.
    Our evenings are enlivened and are maturing... I started teaching Connie chess last year. She taught me Quidler (image scrabble played on cards) Connie is improving at chess. I am improving at Quidler. So... "Connie, that's check-mate!"

    Managed a second pastel in the alpine meadow ( different aspect) yesterday, feels a bit forced. Not as good as the first one.
    Rained heavily last night.ight go to lookout about 25 miles away to sketch. Then laundry in Buffalo. Still diligently searching for Amazon drop-off site, wi-fi and... showers ! The latter is now almost more important than Internet connections.
    Chore time in Buffalo, WY. THEN SHOWERS, hopefully...
    Drove through incredible lush, green rolling hills.
    "Well, it is lush to our Arizona eyes..." came a retort. Passing through a cutting we could see a lot of rock - very little top soil, but green it is.
    Till the chores are done, and we find another internet connection,

    Nice Lonnnng showers at YMCA (!)

    But, what endeared my heart to Buffalo, WY. is the attached images of a bronze sculpting of a Border Collie herding sheep. Apparently, the Basque people (from the country between France and Spain), farmed in this area. According to the plaque, many had Border Collies. Basques must be intelligent, loving people to deserve Border Collies as friends.
    Rain seems to have eased a bit, but even the woman at Chamber of Commerce ( Buffalo) says rainfall has been totally abnormal, country-side should be grey, beige, etc. NOT lush green.

    WoW! What a day! We can't stop congratulating ourselves on jobs well done.
    Didn't rain last night, so we were hopeful for a decent days sketching today... and that we got!
    From Loaf Mountain Lookout, where we parked we had a great view of snow capped peaks and a lovely alpine meadow. So we both set to with easels, pastes and cameras.
    It seemed that other people just wouldn't stop coming to look at our renderings - including the local sheriff's deputy !
    Connie created her first pastel - very nicely done - and I did two pastels.
    Sold one AZ. print, and I'll know tomorrow before we leave about my favourite I have done in a long time: BIG HORN - ALPINE MEADOW. That I have a reasonable hope for a sale ($175?) maybe... but it ain't in the bank, until... it's in the bank.
    We leave mid-morning for the West, over a mountain pass, towards, wait for it... Ten Sleep! A town? Stay tuned to learn more. Well, it does get cold up here, so ten sleep together (?) Maybe... then again....

    Thursday "TIE HACK" Camp Farewell.

    Finally, we got an answer! Where does the 'Tie Hack' come from?

    Peggy (Camp Host):
    "I thought it was Indian...."
    Connie: "Cowboy original. The way they tied cattle for branding..." Jack: 'Some hunting slang. It's a rack they hang dead animals on'.
    Peggy (Camp Host): "The lodge-pole pine forest was used for making ties, for the railroad tracks."
    Left Tie Hack Camp at 10:30 heading West - or so we thought. 2-3 miles outside camp, all hell broke loose with massive hail storm. Hardly made it up a steep hill. Parked at turnout ( yesterday's). Turning back to camp.
    Not too hazardous but steep grades - back at Tie Hack for another night. Boy, what a slchep.    Lue lisää

    Friday, Whoops! 7/4/ Weekend!

    Re-start for mountain pass and further west into WY. after being hit hard and forced back by hailstorm yesterday.
    We were hoping to get a start on campsite availability yesterday. Oh well, if we have boondok, we will.
    Found site at SITTING BULL. Near creek. 8,710 ft.ore than a little nippy.
    Walked into meadow. Connie spotted lovely purple larkspur flowers, also lupins and other small white flowers.
    Walked about a mile to the lake, where we met Annie and her male companion car camping. There YouTube channel if RoadTravel Generation (?) I have his sticker. He has MoE card and will contact - so he says. MoE isost appropriate as his 90+ y. o grandfather, that he road travelled with, died only a few months ago.
