Skye to Ullapool
Yesterday in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
Another perfect, warm spring day. We travelled from Skye to Ullapool and took the scenic coastal route. Saw a couple of ruined castles and a waterfall, but the main attraction was once again driving through the craggy mountains and around numerous lochs. Going to dinner tonight in a local pub - I have my eye on the Cullen Skink Pie!Read more

Day 7–9
More spectacular Skye

A combination of walking and driving today but wherever we went surrounded by amazing scenery. Started after breakfast by hiking up to The Storr which is a mountain which has lost its peak due to erosion. More interesting to look at than it sounds! Gave a wonderful view over surrounding hills and the loch.
Lunch at the Flodigarry Hotel - a smoked haddock and Isle of Mull toastie for Sue and a Scottish fish broth for Tim.
We then did a loop around the Northwest of Skye to see The Kilt, Quraing and The Fairy Glen which are all very unique and different land and rock formations. The roads to the Quiraing were some of the most spectacular we have ever seen - very narrow, steep and bendy with many stretches single lane only.Read more

Day 6
Skye is simply stunning!

Quite a bit of driving today through some spectacular scenery. After breakfast we drove to Glenfinnan and hiked up a rough track to the best view point of the viaduct made famous in the Harry Potter movies. Didn't wait for the train as they were using a diesel engine today because of the fire risk with a steam engine.... just not the same! Then drove to the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle via the Commando Memorial. The scenery was breathtaking with craggy peaks on each side of the road. Crossing the Skye Bridge the water was some of the bluest we have seen - think WA blue! We visited the Armadale castle, museum and gardens this afternoon and then made our way to our very cute two storey apartment - our home for the next two nights.

Day 5
Castles, Lochs and Locks.

Spectacular scenery on our drive today to Fort William. We are now officially in the Highlands. First stop was McCraig tower in Oban which was built seemingly as a bit of whimsy by a philosopher - looks like a smaller scale Colloseum on top of a hill!
Castles today were Dunstaffnage, Stalker and Inverlochy. All impressive in their own right!
As we drove further into the highlands we came to Buachaile Etive Mor where some of the filming for the movie 'Skyfall' was done. The road between the craggy mountains was where the Aston Martin car chase from the movie was filmed. Truly awe inspiring scenery!We ended this afternnon with a visit to Neptune's Steps near Fort William where there are a series of 7 locks. We were lucky enough to see a big boat slowly make its way through all the gates. Amazing engineering. Temp got to 24c again this afternoon.Read more

Oban Surrounds

Another beautiful day today. Got up to 24C this afternoon - so much for the suitcase of warm clothes and coats.
This morning drove to St Conans Kirk which stands on the edge of Loch Awe. Well preserved church from the 18th century in a spectacular setting. We then visited Kilchurn Castle which was built in the mid 1400s. Not safe to go inside, but again in a beautiful location surrounded by open grazing lands and another pretty loch. On to Inverary Castle, which is still home to the Campbell family. Beautifully preserved and filled with priceless antiques. We had a cream tea in the sunshine in the courtyard after our tour and then wandered around Inverary town where we had a pub lunch.
This afternoon came back to Oban, driving alongside many more lochs and saw our first lock in one of the canals! Am now in Oban Distillery trying to convince myself that I like whisky!Read more

Edinburgh to Oban

Great day today after a not so great start when my phone fell out of my pocket in an Uber. Trying to track it down when my phone was the one with the Uber app on it was not easy. Success in the end and ultimately happy driver when rewarded with a very big tip.
Drove to Stirling Castle and was able to join our booked tour, only a couple of minutes late. Guide was fantastic and was able to bring the history of the castle to life. After a light lunch at the castle we headed towards Oban. The scenery was beautiful as the road took us past many lochs and through wee villages.
Arrived in Oban late afternoon to a wonderful room with dual aspect windows, one with a huge window seat, overlooking the Sound of Mull. Sunny with blue skies today reaching 22c this afternoon.Read more

Beautiful Edinburgh

We arrived at our accommodation in Edinburgh about 10pm last night after a very long but smooth flight. Apartment is good but no lift, so had to carry our bags up 4 flights of stairs!
This morning we did a very interesting tour of Edinburgh Castle then were lucky enough to secure a table at Makars Mash for lunch after a fortuitous cancellation. This afternoon we walked to the very beautiful St Giles Cathedral and the Writer's museum. Then took a tour of Edinburgh Old Town and the underground streets and houses - very dark and dank. Finished up with a walk to St Andrew's Square to get a photo with Paddington Bear for our grandchildren.
Close to 20000 steps -bit exhausted now! 😄Read more
