Skiing in Poiana Braşov was scheduled. I wanted to be there quite early. Took the bus to Poiana, which is half an hour away from Braşov. Went to a shop to rent the skis, Rossignol, and got to the station to buy the ticket for four hours. I put the ski against the wall, as you do it in Switzerland, too and got in line. When I came back my skis were gone. Super. Really gone. Someone had taken my skis. Bad. That’s not exactly how I imagined starting my day. Well, there are worse things that can happen. I waited another five minutes, looked for my skis at different locations, had to realize that they were gone. Next to where they were supposed to be was another pair from the same renting company but a Blizzard and way smaller. I thought that maybe I didn’t remember the name of the brand and went back to the store to ask which number my ski had and if it was indeed a Rossignol (I was sure about that, but how stupid if I were wrong). In the store I explained my problem in Romanian. They said that, indeed, I was right about the color and the brand of my skis, but it was my problem that i couldn’t find tehm anymore and wished me luck. So I returned again to the place already with the idea that someone might have taken my ski instead of the Blizzard. So my ski had number 219, the Blizzard 319. Then i thought that maybe, coincidence, they fit for my shoes and the one taken mine wouldn’t notice since it would fit his/hers, too. Indeed! So I was quite convinced that this is what happened, someone switched them. Now explaining that to the guys at the store. In Romanian. Well, somehow they understood what I tried to tell me and found my explanation logic, too. Finally I could get on the slope and enjoy a wonderful day in the mountains. It was very crowded, luckily not on the red and black slopes so skiing was very good. I returned the skis, number 219 still on the slopes somewhere (I kept looking while being in the line for the cablecar but didn’t see it) and luckily that took a good end. How funny! I got back to Braşov and met Gabi for dinner, one of the woman responsible for the organization I was with in 2006. I spent a wonderful evening with her over soup and cake and enjoyed it so much. Also a lovely, strong woman with a troubled life and still being so cheerful and nice. I know why I really like that country.Leggi altro

Of course I wanted to know if that School of Carpentry and Organs was still existing and running well. I contacted the Stiftung back in Switzerland and got in touch with Barbar Dutli, an organ biulder from Switzerland and head of the school. Only for this year because the firm is running on its own with Romanian taken over and the school will be run by them next year. What a successful story! I went by bus to Harman, it’s always a bit out of my comfort zone taking buses here, but it’s acutally very fine. Barbara awaited me and showed me around, explaining the concept, how organs are built and the story of that project. What an adventure. Organ biulder hasn’t been a profession in Romania since 1945. So they opened up a school for a non existing profession! That was of course a big problem. They actually had the idea when they were asked 1996 by an association of a German church in Targu mures to renovate the organ. Then they had another job for renovation, a small organ in the black church in Braşov. Then the people there asked them to clean the big one (4000! pipes). That was made within 4 years and that’s how the idea came up to teach young Romanian how to build and renovate organs. As explained, it wasn’t a profession anymore so there was almost no way to be accepted as school. Luckily with entering the EU Romania was forced to teach more people handwerkliche Professions. And they were working with the University of Braşov before and they were able to get a license to teach adults only. Then they were trying to get support from money coming from the EU to get machines. That needed so much time and effort - and tons of paper work. It took years, every detail had to be correct. It is ridiculous, for example, it takes so many years that the machine they wanted initially doesn’t exist anymore when the money would be there. Then you have to fill out new papers and explaining why you have to get another machine. In the end, they didn’t get the money (150’000€) at all because they pretended that the machine was not standing at the right place! First of all this is a incredibly ridiculous reason and second, the machine is exactly standing where she was planned for from the very beginning! Random. Unfortunately it is highly aleatory who gets the money and where it goes to. Many people in Romania were starting projects, invested money to be supported by the EU, and got nothing in the end because of this randomness. Very sad. Corruption is still a big issue here. People are very disappointed. Paying taxes and knowing that this money disappears somewhere in Bucharest is very frustrating. Luckily the society had money from Switzerland and could survive. Nowadays run by Romanian it is very successful and Organ builder have a good reputation in this country. And since only 60 out of 1500 organs are renovated, there is still a lot of work for a couple of generations to come. The organ in the black church is the best kept in Europe. Being also the biggest, it was built in 1836-1839 in Berlin, shipped to Brasov and rebuilt there, the longest pipe being 11m long. Incredible achievement if you imagine how they traveled back then.
With lot’s of information I got back to Braşov and went swimming in the Olympic pool. That was renovated, too, it looks pretty now and rain isn’t dripping in anymore. I didn’t take my cap with me, a mistake, it is just allowed to swim with cap. Learnt something again, they still let me swim. In the evening I was again invited for diner at Gica’s. I had Mamalita (a sortmof Polenta) Palinka, Visinate (a liquor) and red wine, everything saute di saute naturale, 100% homemade. Yummie!

    3 gennaio 2018, Romania ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

The next day Theo brought me to Curtea where I got a ticket for Braşov. It would be a 4.5h drive through winding roads and mountains. I guess I was the only foreign there, the bus quite old, but we arrived safely in Braşov. I had decided to take a hotel there and not staying at my hostparents since I didn’t know when they were returning from Belgium, where Ana lives now with baby Luiz and husband Mike. So I walked up Strada lunga, long street as I did everyday in 2006. The only things that changed were that the cara are more modern and there are way more of them - and many of the houses has been renovatd. My hotel was at the very end - or beginning of the strada lunga. And it’s really long. I checked in - amd checked with Gica who was at home. I didn’t loose time and walked the street again to my foster home, Strada Lucernei. How good it was to see her again. Amd of course she asked me: Chantal, you hangri? I remembered immediately why I felt so at home then. Wonderful people. As we talked some of my Romanian came back and we were able to have a good conversation, updating eachother about our respective lifes. Vasile was already working and since it was his name’s day they were celebrating at his working place. After an absolutely delicious dinner we went there by cab. Vasile, too, so joyful and nice, I was in a bliss. We stayed for a while and then we called it a day. How good to be back!Leggi altro

    2 gennaio 2018, Romania ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

We had quickly breakfast and soon we were heading to Nucsoara. It was just Theo, Mattei, her older son, and me. Adrian, the husband, was again working on the third and stayed with Nikita in Bucuresti. They both work 100% at the National Radio station as well as Ghoerges.
So we were on the road, the weather being too warm, rainy for that season. We stopped in Curtea, visited the tomb of King Mihai, who just had died recently. We also visited the monastry then headed to Nucsoara. I realized quickly why 4WD were needed since it was a non-asphalt, steep, curvy road up to that small village. Arrived we put our luggage in the tiny but comfy house and went visiting the neighbors which are living there. Again I was touched and impressed how friendly and openminded they all are and in which modest - poor conditions they live. Some don’t have running water. Their home is a room with bed and a room where the kitchen, very small. Sometimes 4 people. Heating is with fire. I felt again ashamed for my luxury life I have back home like I remember feeling when I was working at the children’s home back in 2006. They have so little and manage life. Many of them work abroad, in the forest of France for example and come back for the holidays. When you grow up in a place like Nucsoara, you don’t have many possibilities and choices. Which made me realize again how blessed I am. Just because I coincidentally was born somewhere else.
We were spoiled with lot’s of homemade cookies and cakes. I tried to follow the conversations but my Romanian is very rosty. It was still a wonderful afternoon being able to catch a glimpse of lifes that are so different of mine. We had some soup, giorba, for dinner and then went to bed quickly. In the house of Theodora there is no running water and the toilet is in a little hut outside. They bought the house when Mattei was little and some more terrain for Nikita. They spend their summers up there, Theodora stayed three month nonstop when Nikita was born. By the way, Maternity leave in Romania is two years.

    1 gennaio 2018, Romania ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Since I had two weeks off over Christmas and New Year I decided to fly back to Romania where i stayed for four months in 2006. I’ve been very lucky having the best of the best host family you can imagine. Ana, then 14 and her parents Gica and Vasile made me feel at home right away. And the food. Gica is the best cook ever. I haven’t been back but for a short visit in 2007 so I figured it was time to visit those wonderful people again. I had the plane on the frist day of 2018 to Bucuresti where I would meet Theodora and her family. How I met them back in 2006 came from a coincidence: Every week in Braşov I visited a classical concert. One evening, as I was buying tickets I heard two older men getting tickets in a heavy swiss accented English. As I am I started to speak with them. They actually had or created a Organ and Caprenter school in Harman, not far away from Braşov since there are about 1500 organs in former German churches that need renovation. They invited me to visit the school and there I was introduced to two students, Andreea and Gheorges. We became friends and we spent several sunday afternoons in Harman playing cards and drinking red wine mixed with coke. We visited Bucuresti with them and that’s how I met Theodora, which is Gheorges sister. Since she speaks French we got along very well and stayed in touch until now. So I got picked up by her, her husband and the younger son, Nikita. It makes such a difference when someone is wating for you at the airport! We went to Theo’s apartment, which is in a big, old communist block. She asked me if I wanted to go to their little house in the country the other day. Then I could take a bus from Curtea de Argeş to Braşov where I would meet my host parents. Of course I wanted! So they changed cars since it needed 4WD to get there.
For dinner we went one floor up to Theo’s parents, where her sister lives, too, with her boyfriend. Gheorges and his wife Claudia came aswell, so good to see them all again and seeing that they are doing well. Andreea, btw, is now in Austria. We had dinner and then soon I was so tired from the short night that i slept deeply next the the christmas tree.

Wow, what a wonderful way to come home. My dad and my younger brother waited for at the airport. We went to the other arrival hall and looked for Melinda and Mark coming from Dubai. We didn't really said a time or a place bit suddenly Mark was in front of me and it was so cool meeting them in Switzerland! I was a bit overwhelmed by all the things happening and seeing them was just adding up. They headed into town and and we to Murten. We were home quickly and also waiting for me was Joya, our very old dog. She didn't hear me coming since deaf, probably a bit senile, too, but I think she recognized me anyway. It was a bit curious that my mum didn't come to the airport. It was even more odd when there were big tables and benches in the yard. I knew that my other brother would come as well but with the time it was clear that some more people would come to have a welcome back party and surprising me. And they came and I was in a bliss the whole evening. Having almost all my favorite people around me was perfect. Going away is a really cool thing but coming home like this is the best.Leggi altro

    10 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

My last day in New York was like this whole trip: wonderful 😊. I had a nice chat with a salesman, he was born in Peru and lived for 20 years in Japan and now is here in New York. I walked down 5th Avenue, had breakfast at the Butcher's Daughter, where Sophie and I were in California, too. Then I headed to the Moma Design Store and came out with a little less money. I decided to walk the Highline and head back to the hotel early enough. Yesterday we arrived at 6:30pm, four hours later by the way.
I had been on the Highline im winter with snow, also very pretty but today, it was beautiful! They did a great thing up there, some people really have good ideas. It wasn't my last time in New York.
Now I am sitting at the airport and waiting for my flight. What more to say, I am going home.

    9 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

I am sitting somewhere on a recreational area looking at the cars on the highway who haven't been moving for an hour now. There is a fatal accident approximately 2km ahead of us and the whole highway is closed. No idea how long, the bus driver said something between 3-4hours. Luckily we are not involved in it and that I have the flight back home from New York tomorrow. I have a very interesting neighbor, Philippe, from Paris, working for a company that produces skin for medical and cosmetical use. We have been talking the whole trip now so the time passes quickly.
Otherwise I let my thoughts go out and wander around. What an adventure my trip was so far. I can't believe it comes to an end soon. It as a gift and a privilege to have the freedom (by my fancy red passport, by money, by culture, my job, my family, the century I live in (many of those things came to me just by luck)) to travel around the world. It is by far not a banality or granted to be as free as I am. So I am grateful for that.
And now I hope that this accident hasn't been as bad as it sounds and that we will make it to New York safely. New York, so cool!

  • Washington, a big pleasant surprise

    8 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

I landed after a very short night in the plane at the airport of the capital. After dropping off my luggage and a second coffee I decided to visit the Newseum which is a very interesting, well made and interacting museum. It is one of the rare ones you have to pay entry fee but it's valid the other day, too. It is totally worth it.
Since I was so tired I called it an early night and went again today. I also visited the Hirshhorn, which has an exhibition on Ai Weiwei. He built with Lego more then 170 portraits of people being held or were in prison because of political reasons. It made quite an impact on me.
All in all Washington is very neat place, you can walk or bike everything easily even more on such a nice day as we have today.
Funny thing: Not many people pay cash here - I do and as you get back the change I either give it as a tip or put it right back into my purse. I never check it, so now I have a coin from Fidji, one from Canada and one from Mexico in addition 😊

We decided to head to the beach again yesterday so we went again to Venice. The journey down there took forever since we got out of the bus a stop too earlier and then missed the following bus. Not that we would have been there that much faster but it felt like that. We went first shopping and then I read Rich's book for kids on the beach. It's called EB: Back on the Beat, a really well written and funny book about an undercover lizard agent.
We had a delicious diner at the cheesecake factory with dessert of course. Today we decided to have breakfast in Venice again and having our nails done. Ahh, that was nice, massage included. I had then to say tschüss to Sophie, that was not that fun at all but since I see her again next week it wasn't that bad. Even more that I had rendezvous with Linda and Louis, a couple I met on Aranui and lives in the area of L.A. We were so happy to see eachother! I love reunions like that. They showed me the Getty, a beautiful art mueseum on a hill. I got spoiled all the way, the two of them being wonderful. Thank you so much, what a great way to spend the last evening in the West coast before heading to Washington DC!

  • July 4th / Wiedersehen Nr. 13

    4 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

"You came by public transport? Seriously?" Yes we did and it was an experience. We left our place at around 10:30. The plan was to take the bus to downtown, have a cozy breakfast, then head to Rich's home. First step in the plan was easy. Then we wanted to buy the ticket for the 12.30 train to Fullerton. There was a nice young man at the ticket machine, he got us a ticket in no time - but for the wrong train, leaving only at 2pm. He works not for Antrak but Metrolink. Hmmm. Doof. So we thought of buying the ticket from Antrak. This was not possible because you need either a passport or a driving license for identification. We had none of those items on us. I am mean for going on a 30 minutes train ride you meed ID?! So we had to wait for two hours at Union Station. There is nothing to do there and eating was out since we just had breakfast. So we tried to go shopping taking the Metro. But as mentioned, everything takes a looooot of time so we had approximately 10min of shopping before going back. We finally were in the train to Fullerton, it was almost 15min late. We had to rush to catch the other bus. It was very hot but we did it. And we arrived at Rich's. Yeah!! Finally. At 4pm. "Why didn't you just take an Uber?!" Well. No idea.
Anyway, it was so nice to meet Rich again, we shared a lot of memories of our time in Brasov. We had a wonderful afternoon at his place, meeting lot's of people and then heading to the park for the very big and very beautiful firework. To get back we took an Uber. It took 50minutes 😊

  • Hollywood. Where is the glamour?

    3 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We got up at 6:30 to take the bus and the metro to the Hollywood Studio like probably half the US. It was packed, we had still much fun, though expecting something different, what exactly we don't know. Waiting for the attraction was long so we debated if the jurassic park thing was worth it. We ask a friendly staff member and he offered us a priority pass! How cool was that. After ten minutes we were sitting in the boat for a funny ride with a free shower in the end.
Before dinner we went to the walk of fame. Again. Just stars on the floor. We are not so into this Hollywood thing, I guess. For diner we had a goddess salad in a very healthy vegan diner with a therapy room, too. We didn't know that. It was very green, bizar at the point where they would offer i.v. therapy against all sorts of things upon 155$. We really needed a Brownie after that. With lot's of ice cream. On the way home there were some road closed because of the 4th so the bus was taking another route. We weren't the only ones not knowing that. One guy said not nice words about the public transport in L.A. We think it's quite good so far, it just takes ages. So yesterday we had to take again the metro to another station and wait another hour to get home. But we did and going to bed was even nicer like that. And tomorrow we are invited at a 4th of July BBQ at Rich's, an American I've met in Romania 11years ago. So exciting!

Ir was said to be the worst traffic from the West Coast, they are probably right. It was very busy being a Saturday starting the long weekend since July 4th is soon coming. Sophie, who drove all the way down, did a wonderful job so we dropped our luggage in Alhambra, where we stay and gave back the rental car. Before entering the renting car area were a bump with some spikes. We were afraid to pass and destroying our wheels so we waited for another car to come. We let him pass and of course nothing happened. The driver stared at us a bit confused. But at least we knew nothing would happen, right? After that we strolled around downtown, were wondering why all the stores were already closed at 6pm and had a delicious mexican diner (on a bizzli hard cushion, gäu Sophie) 😊Leggi altro

    29 giugno 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We had breakfast at the Happy Girl Kitchen Company, the name very adequate to our mood. We were excited to start our drive to Big Sur with the 17miles around Monterey peninsula, strolling at the pebble beach on the pebbles under the californian sun. Which was hidden behind the clouds almost until Big Sur. But then the sky got endless and the views were stunning. We had a wonderful drive until we had to turn around since mudslides damaged the road further south. We had the idea of spending the rest of the day on the pebbles at Pebble beach. Good plan. Eigetlech. It is a fancy golf resort and there are no pebbles at the beach. At all! Why call it pebble beach? It's just sand told as the posh lady from the golf shop. Juhuuu, another renting car, another roadtrip! We were a bit disappointed that it wasn't pink so we changed the planned name of Rosetta to Silvetta and off we were! It is such a difference to sing along to silly songs when you are two. It's so so nice that Sophie is with me. We stopped at places we liked, had lunch in a very English pub, visited a bunker, a lighthouse and went to the mistery spot. It is somewhere in the woods where the compass needle does funny things (that's what they say.) So everything is very steep and queer. You are in a cabin, all is tilted at a 17° angle. Your brain does not get it so you are a bit dizzy, you walk like a drunk and are surprised when the water is running upwards. With the very bad jokes of our guide (it reminded me of the tunnel tour back in Perth) this was a very funny thing to do. We arrived in Santa Cruz, our first stop and ended the day with some delicious fish on the beach - what more to ask for!Leggi altro

  • Misti II

    21 giugno 2017, Perù ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Wow, that was one long, exciting day! After a short breakfast we left the camp without the camping gear at 2:20am with our head torches and a lot of motivation. We had 1300m to climb up and had a good pace, everyone in a good shape. We made breaks every hour, sunrise was soon and the shadow of Misti looked like a pyramid over Arequipa, beautiful! At around 5500m we had to put on our crampons and take our ice picks since we had some ice/snow fields ahead. After a very steep crossing we arrived at the border of the crater and had still about 150m to go up. That's when I started to feel a bit nauseous and very tired. Lack of oxygen and a bit of altitude sickness, I thought. It went through my head of stopping here and not going to the top but hey, as Marcos said, once in a lifetime, right? And there is my head, whenI want something, well, I thought, das geit de scho. So we continued the last, again very steep bit to the top. Oh dear, that cross didn't and didn't get closer. I don't really know how I did the last steps in the sand but the I was there. What a view at more then 5800m!
Because I felt worse (what a suprise...) I just sat down and concentrated on breathing. I took only a couple of pictures and was happy to get down quite soon. I got a bit worried, we had in total 2400m to go down, first crossing again this very steep ice field. Well, it wasn't fun, defenitely not the best moment of my trip but we made it safely to a place where we would take an alternative route down, or a short cut, as our guide said. And I think that saved my whole day. We could slide down the sand, making lot's of meters in a short time. We arrived at base camp at around noon, the others had diner, I took a nap, still feeling so weak, tired and nauseous. You are of no use in this state, couldn't help the others taking the tent down. My companions were great, all not affected by the altitude, helped me with water, carrying things and gave me big big moral support. Chantal offered me a peach juice which I could drink and keep because, yes vomiting was also involved in the whole thing just to loose all dignity up there. So that was the first sugar in 10hours, gave me the kick and zagg, I was almost back to normal. The way down was again sand sliding, very funny. We arrived at the parking lot around 3:30pm, put all the luggage on the roof, sat in the car and it broke down. So we had to wait for another one to pick us up. That made me arrive at the hotel way later then expected. I had diner at Marcos, said ciao to him and his family and went to bed early without packing anything for tomorrow. What a day! I am so greatful everything went well and I am so looking forward to see Sophie again for our road trip in California!

    20 giugno 2017, Perù ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

I had a full day in Arequipa arriving by nightbus on monday. Yamina, Bran, Belgian cousins, I met in the bus and me and breakfast together, then I rented some walking sticks for trek number three. I met Marcos again for lunch, had guinea pig (it tastes a bit like very good chicken) and got more and more excited for the big hime up to 5800m above sea level.
I got picked up at 8o'clock, joining me were Severin and Olivier from Thun, Chantal from Grund bei Gstaad, Eva, a German and Ophir, an Israeli. Very cool group. We picked up some more gear like grampons, ice axe, tents, I took some warm pants and gloves, it was supposed to be very cold up there. We started at 3400m with about 15kg on our back. The hike to our base camp at 4500m was very scenic with a great view over Arequipa and Chachani, the other volcano slightly above 6000m. Arriving there, we put up our tents and had soon diner, a soup and spaghetti, exactly what you need. We went to bed early since the alarm clock would go off at 1am the other day...

  • Three entrances

    18 giugno 2017, Perù ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

I am very sorry for the ones doing my laundry today because the socks, oh dear. I had breakfast in company of a canadien couple and walked up to some ruins where I had rendez-vous with Nina and Earl. Well, if you do not know that there are three entrances it is quite a challenge to find eachother. We did and spent a good time together, enjoying the sun and the warm weather. Then again, time to say goodbye. I am pretty positive to see them again, I'll just have to plan another trip to visit all the wonderful people I met on this one 😊Leggi altro

  • Casanova!

    17 giugno 2017, Perù ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Alarmclock at 3:30am to be the first ones catching the bus up to Machu Picchu. We all met at 4am at the bus station, organized some coffee, chatted and so the 90min were over fast and we were on the first bus. There was still some mist and clouds up there, the landscape changed every minute, it was just beautiful. Coco expected the sun at 7.15am, the sun came out at 7:17am, almost shining directly through the window of the temple of the sun since it's soon the shortest day. Coco was in topform. He was a guide at this mystical place for years and has been there more then a thousand times. We had a very good tour around the cite and then it was time to say goodbye to Coco. We went back to the entrance and saw again Casanova! We spotted them at day one and again on the track. He and Mister Green (we have no idea who they really are) were always wearing spotless white shirts and were very classy. It was so funny that we saw them again on the last day. Later on I went up to the Portas del Soles where the view was again breathtaking, then I walked down to Agua Calientes. Nina, Earl and me had a drink at their hotel lobby and played Spanish Monopoly, it was very funny. We took the train to Ollantaytambo and the bus to Cuzco. We said goodbye to the girls and I am looking forward seeing Nina and Earl again tomorrow!Leggi altro

  • Day four: Only 30min to go

    16 giugno 2017, Perù ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

We would skip doing a 6 hours walk and do zip lining instead. Our cooks had a rough party night and an even rougher morning so our breakfast was not what we had the days before. Well, not tragic, we felt more sorry for them.
I had never done the zip lining before and me and heights are having a twisted relationship since the Kettenkarussell in Vienna. It was better then expected, it was actually much fun. The scariest thing was the hanging bridge in the end. Sofía, afraid of heights did very well and Mariana was the superwoman, being attached in the back at the zip and flying down the line on her tummy. We had again an adventurous bus ride to Hydroelectrica where we had lunch. We had a 'short' walk from there to Agua Calientes. It was along the traintracks and longer then we all thought, Coco giving us more random time frames which we were already used to. I enjoyed this walk in particular because we could walk next to each other and get to know each other better. We had all booked different hotel so we met again for a beer before diner and had again a good time together. We got a bright green T-Shirt where it was written on that we successfully walked the trail. My reaction being a bit tipsy after a beer on empty stomach was that I would never wear that. Coco asked us to take it with us to Machu Picchu the next day for a picture so of course I will do that.
