Shakespear Regional Park

Last night was a bit short. There was a wedding on the other side of the road and they had a great party, at least it was sounding like it!

So I woke up late and after a good breakfast, I decided that I want to do something today.
So I went to Silverdale first, as I was running out of bread and then I went to the Shakespear Regional Park.
What a beautiful place this is!
I first went to Army Bay and had a short walk around the beach and then I drove to Te Haruhi Bay for another short walk and a nice lunch break on the beach!

On the way back I wanted to wash my car and vacuum clean it, but I could find a place where I could do it on my own, so I will do that on Tuesday instead on the way to Ramarama.

The rest of the day was calm and relaxed with some talks with my fellow campers.
I am actually cooking outside my car here every day. The first reason, it’s so nice to side outside during cooking and eating dinner. And the second reason is that the cooking plates in the kitchen are really bad and super slow. 😉😅Read more

Karepiro Bay

Relaxed and calm day today again. I really have a hard time leaving this fantastic country, again.
Right now, I don’t want to leave. 😕

I try to motivate myself for Australia with planning the first days in Perth, but it’s not working so well. Of course, I am looking forward to Australia but still, I don’t want to leave New Zealand.

In the afternoon I went for a nice walk from the campground to Karepiro Bay.

Almost last day in NZ

It feels a little bit like my last day today.
Tomorrow I have to sell my car and will stay at a B&B for the last night closed to the airport as my flight is leaving at 7.15 am very early in the morning 😴

After breakfast, I went to wash my car and then to Ramarama. Here I started to first empty my car and then look through all my stuff to see what I have and what I need to take with, what to throw away and what to give away to other people.
Then I was washing my stuff and hang it up for drying.
After that, I had a lunch break. And I got the best company I could imagine! My friend from the beginning of the trip past by, crying out for attention and then jumped up on the table to lay next to me and get some belly rubs as well.
As I was done with my lunch and moved back to my car, I had a cat in the car as well and there he or she ( I don't know 🙈) was staying there for 4 hours. I think the cat knew how much I miss Snoopy and just wanted to give me company for some time to make me feel better again and it was definitely working! I still miss Snoopy, but I am feeling better now!
With a cat in the car, packing wasn't so easy as this little cat was not moving at all 🙈😅
But I managed pretty good anyway and was done early and spend the rest of the afternoon reading.Read more

Last day in New Zealand

I slept bad this night, because many people were leaving very early in the morning, the first one at 4 am 😳😴
So I didn't sleep so well after that, as they were not so quiet as you would expect then to be.

So I got up at 7.30 am as it was no sense to try to sleep a bit more.
I had my breakfast and started to talk to a guy from Germany how gave me a lot of tips about the west coast of Australia. He was like, best decision ever to travel there! Best place in Australia.
That sounds good!

And it looks like I gonna need to do some camping down there as well, as they don't have so many hostels along the west coast as I was expecting. Good, I met him to tell me this! Well, it feels like I gonna keep the camping lifestyle up for a few more weeks! I can say I like the sound of it! 🤗 😎

He also encouraged me, to focus on travel north an don't spend much time south of Perth. So now I am feeling much more comfortable about the next part of my travel!

We talked so much, that we got a bit late. I had to finish my packing and get ready to go.
Fixed a few sandwiches from the bread I had left for the day and then I went to Charles Beach where I will spend some time until it's time to meet Steve in Auckland at 2 pm and leave my car to him.

I met a guy there, he started to talk to me. I found out, that his brother in law is owning a big racing stable and a lot of horses as well. And he promised me to fix work for me if I ever decide to move to New Zealand. 😉

Then I went to Auckland to sign the papers with Steve, talked about how we will keep on going, as he is going to sell the car for me now and I will get the money as soon as it's sold, what can be next week or in 6 months.
But like this, I get the most money out of it in the end, half of what I paid for it in the first place.

Steve then drove me to my Airbnb in Mangere where I found a room for the night.
He dropped me off there around 2.40 pm.
So I had a quiet afternoon.
In the evening I got invited for dinner from a german couple that is also staying here overnight. They bought Chinese food and got so much that the said immediately that I can eat with them! That was nice!

So we were sitting outside together the whole evening and were talking about our trips.
Around 9 pm I took a shower and then went to bed to try to sleep.
Unfortunately, the bed is really hard, it’s like sleeping on the floor. 😳😅
So it was really hard to find a position that was at least a little bit comfortable and it took me longer to fall asleep.Read more

Stoppover in Sydney

After a horrible night, I don’t know as much I was awake and asleep but it’s not feeling like I have been sleeping much, and a lot of pain on my back I got up at 4.20 am.
Super tired, super unmotivated.
I had a quick breakfast as I had my sandwiches left from yesterday and a cup of tea before it was time to leave the house and get out to the road to meet my Uber.
The driver arrived on time, 5 am and it was just 12 minutes to the airport from here. So I checked in, went through the security check and was done with all at 5.35 am already.
That’s the only thing that is nice with an early morning flight.
Tired as I was I searched for a calm place to sit and rest a bit.
Boarding started at 6.50 and at 7.15 we were leaving the gate, ready for take-off.
It’s about 3 1/2 hours to Sydney from Auckland. The flight was quite bumpy.
But I was surprised that we all got a nice breakfast, as it’s just such a short flight, I was not expecting to get more than a cup of tea, to be honest. So that was really nice! I like Virgin Australia! 😊
The weather in Sydney is not so good. Super cloudy and raining here and there. But I know, they are very happy here about the rain and I can understand it!
One hour after landing I had cleared customs and biosecurity. Answering a lot of questions but they didn’t want to check my bag.
After that, I had to walk to the Virgin Australia Transit Area. On the way I picked up a new Simcard already and fixed the phone, so now I am ready for Australia.

Then I went to drop off my bag, got my boarding pass and had to wait around 10-15 min for the coach to arrive and then drive from the international airport to the domestic airport.
Here I could go straight to the security check. I noticed that I am always choosing the line that takes the longest time today... Funny, at least I have more than enough time.
Clearing the security check I went to find something to eat. It’s 3 hours left until the departure to Perth.
I got a nice baguette and tried to find a place where I could lay down for a while, not so easy, unfortunately...
What I also noticed, a lot of people here are wearing face masks. In New Zealand it was not like this, you always see some Chinese people with them on, but that’s nothing special, but here around 30% of all people, passengers, and staff are wearing them.

The rest of the time I tried to stay awake.
We were running 30 min late and left Sydney at 2.25 instead of 1.55 pm.Read more

Perth

The flight to Perth was quite calm and took 5 hours. I was surprised by how low we were flying. I had a good view down over Australia all the time, except for the place that was cloudy. 😉

I was sitting beside an older couple from the UK and we had some nice talks.
We got a nice lunch as well, so that was really good.
I even managed to sleep a little bit, around 1 hour I think. So that was good but I am still super tired and exhausted.
The heat in Perth was like a shock, 32 degrees, but it feels warmer.
There were no customers waiting for us. I could go straight to pick up my bag and then I had a hard time to find my rental car. But with a little bit of help, I managed to find their office and I got a really nice car for the next weeks!

After that, I went straight to my hostel.
It was so hard to find a free carpark so in the end, I was calling them and was asking, where I can park the car for free.
With that information it was easy to find a place, it's around 5 minutes to walk to the hostel from here. So that's fine.
I took out some stuff from my bag, that I won't need now and then went to check-in.
My plan was to go and get something to eat from McDonald's then but surprise, when I checked in the owner told me, that they have a free BBQ tonight for everyone!!
So now I didn't need to go and buy food anymore.
He showed me my bed. I am in a room with 5 other girls. One from Germany, one from Poland, two from France and the last one I don't know, she is just talking to her phone all the time.
The girls from France are really strange... But the other two girls are really nice and they helped with finding filtered water to drink, the shower and everything.
Around 8 pm it was time for the BBQ and it seems like everyone is here today! I got shocked by how many people it is. As tired as I was it was a bit too much for me. 😬🙈
After that I was sitting with the German girl on a small outside space in front of the house, talking a little bit until I got too tired and just wanted to go to bed. That took me another hour as I started to talk to the girl from Poland as well.
So I laid down at 10 pm, what is like 2 am I New Zealand 🙈😴Read more

Hyde Park and Lake Monger

I woke up around 7 am. I slept pretty well. Heard later from the other girls, that some people have been quite noisy until 2 o'clock at night and they could not fall asleep because of them. I missed that totally, probably because I used ear probs straight away because of the air conditioning.

At 7 am it was totally quiet in the hostel. Most people seem to sleep longer in the morning. I tried to sleep a little bit more but it was not working so well. So, in the end, I got up around 8.30 to go to the bathroom and check out the breakfast.
There are tea and coffee and a lot of different toast for free, including jams, peanut butter, and Nutella.
I met a girl from France that just arrived this morning and we talked a little during breakfast.
Around 9.30 am I saw that the girls from my room were also awake now and having breakfast. But for me, it was then time to pack up my stuff, take off the sheets for my bed and check out around 10 am.
Miri the girl from Germany decided to spend the day with me. So we walked to my car, I dropped my bag and then went to Hyde Park to sit down in the shadow and check out what we could do or where we could go.
It's super hot today, already 35 degrees now and it should get up to 40 degrees today 😳🥵

As it was so hot we decided to drive to Lake Monger instead of walking.
Nice lake with a lot of birds, many shags, ducks and to our big surprise a lot of pelicans as well!
We found a place in the shadow under a tree and just sat there watching the birds, talking a bit and sweat like hell. It's just getting hotter and hotter with every hour.

As we got hungry around lunchtime we went to a supermarket nearby to by something to eat and then drove to Kings Park to eat there, of course, in the shadow!
We were pretty exhausted from the heat so we went back to Hyde Park to watch the cockatoos a little bit. But even they had a quiet time then so we decided it would be nice to get inside an air-conditioned room. I dropped her off at the Shiralee Hostel and went then to my hostel where I will stay one night.
I checked in and got a 4 bedroom on my own. That was nice! The guy said, he doesn't think someone more will be coming today. So that's nice.

I laid down for a while and had a little nap. I got quite a headache during the evening and took it super calm. This hostel is much quieter than the last one I had.
At 9 pm two girls from Japan checked in to my room, super friendly!
I must have been falling asleep around 10 o'clock or so.
Didn't hear them go to bed at all.
At midnight one more girl was coming and sleeping in the last empty bed. I just woke up when she arrived but was falling asleep pretty fast again.
I really needed the sleep I can say. Good that the mattress here is better than the last one I had.Read more

East Perth

I woke up at around 7 o'clock. The woman that checked in at midnight was already leaving at 7 again 😳

I took it easy until 8 am when the other two girls woke up I was standing up and had breakfast.
After breakfast, I looked up, what I could do today.
It's very cloudy today but still around 29 degrees and really humid.
I left the hostel around 10 am and dropped my bag off in the car and then walked from the car to an old church at the end of the road.

From there I went to the Swan River and found a lot of cockatoos in the parks around the river.
They are everywhere here, it's so amazing!

I walked from the park to the park and had a rest here and there.
Around 12.30 pm it started to rain a little bit, not much but it also got a bit colder and I started to walk back to my car. As I feel a little bit sick, I have a headache and pain in the throat I didn't want to start to feel cold.
I then went to a big shopping center, where I waited for the message from Kara that she has been arrived in Perth and cleaned customers to pick her up from the airport.
I got in contact with her on Facebook and we will travel together around the west coast and share the cost for fuel and food.
We went shopping together to get our Camping stuff and then we went to the hostel where we will stay for one night.
Kara had already booked this hostel weeks ago and I was luckily also getting a bed there. And we were even ending up in the same room!! Amazing!
We first were sitting us together and talking over our plans and ideas and we have pretty much the same plans, lifestyle, food taste, and everything. Plus that we really goad come along with each other. This was so much luck, that we found us!

Then we had a quiet early dinner and went to bed around 9 pm.Read more

Penguin Island

We both woke up around 7 o'clock this morning, so we decided to ear breakfast early and get going.
After breakfast, we went to Rockingham to the Information Center there and ask if it's possible to hire a Kayak and driver to Penguin Island with it. First, we walked over the little market that was beside the carpark and bought so vegetables and fruits for a really nice price! Then we ask the lad in the information center and it was possible to just hire a kayak! We got a number and called the guy and he had a double kayak for us!
We just went fast to buy bread rolls with cheese for a picnic lunch and we drove to the penguin island harbor!
He was already waiting for us there and we got the kayak and life jackets and some good tips from him where to go first and what to think about!
So we got ready and off we were!
It was quite challenging to paddle to Seal Island as the wind and current were pushing us around.
But we managed and got better and better to handle it the longer we were out!

Then we were paddling towards Penguin Island, passing some other small and rocky islands on the way with a lot of shags and seagulls on!
The closer we came the better we could see the big pelican colony on the island! There are so many pelicans!!
We then paddled to the beach and went onshore and had our lunch break. After an hour relaxing we went for a walk over Penguin Island and saw a lot of birds and pelicans.
No penguins unfortunately but it’s too early to see them come onshore. And they close the island at 4 pm for the public to give the penguins the privacy they need, which is really good!!

After the walk, we decided to stay here a while longer before we return back to the mainland.

We left around 3.40 pm and had some problems to navigate as the wind was pretty fresh now and the current was pushing us in the wrong direction all the time. But we managed, a bit tired but still more than satisfied with the day. After returning the kayak we went to Herron where we found a beautiful little campground right beside a lake.
So we had our dinner at the beach, watching the sunset and the pelicans on the lake! It couldn’t be better.

Wildlife around us

On the way to our campground in Herron, we saw our first kangaroos 😍
It was a big group of them! And a lot of cockatoos as well! And this once grey and pink!
They were inside a paddock or so and obviously just got their food shortly before we arrived because they were all eating. So it’s not really wild kangaroos but our first ones. As there was no place to park the car, Kara jumped out to take some pictures while I was stopping the car on the road hoping that no one is coming right now!

Seal Island

On Seal Island, we saw a lot of Sea Lions!
They are sooo huge! 😳
Most of them were sleeping on the beach, but some of them were actually in the water, playing around with each other and having a good time.

Some sea lions came pretty close to our kayak to check us out!
It was so amazing!
You are not allowed to paddle close to the beach, so Kara looked that we were in a good position moving us around towards the sea lions in the water and I was taking pictures with my underwater camera.

When we decided to leave and paddle towards Penguin Island one sea lion started to play with a guy that was snorkeling here. So we stayed a while longer and watched their game. The sea lion was really long playing with the guy and seems to have fun with him.
It was at least fun to watch from the side!
After a while, we left them behind and went to Penguin Island.Read more

Tuart Forest National Park and Dunn Bay

I had a horrible night. I must have caught the flu and I was lying awake most of the night shaking like hell, though I was not freezing 😬
I felt pretty bad when I woke up at 6.30 am.
Kara woke up shortly after me and after if been to the toilet I told her that I am feeling really bad and want to lay down again for a while, what was absolutely no problem for her.
We took her stuff out from the tent and said, she moves to the hanging bed she has.
I tried to sleep a little bit but it was hard...
I felt a little bit better at 8.30 but still pretty bad.

Kara was sending me back to bed and fixed some breakfast for me. I took some painkillers against my horrible headache and neck pain.
And after one more hour of laying down and some breakfast, a felt good enough to drive to the next big town to go to a pharmacy and get some medications. We said, that we will stay here overnight if I am not starting to feel better during the drive to Bunbury.
It took us around one hour to come to Bunbury and I stopped at the first pharmacy I saw and got some medication which I took immediately.
We then went to the information center as we needed to fill up our water bottles and could find a tap with thinking waster. And we did a big mistake... We missed that he need a parking ticket in the car park. Though we were only gone for like 10 minutes we got a ticket 😳😬
And it's expensive here, 70$! 😱😱
Bad luck I would call this... At least we knew now where to get some water. Expensive water... 😕

As I felt a bit fresher with the medication we kept on driving south. We wanted to go to Peppermint Grove Beach for our lunch break but somehow missed one road and was only driving through the Tuart Forest National Park instead. Beautiful drive through giant trees! Just amazing to see this!

We then had our lunch break in Dunn Bay instead, another beautiful beach here!

It's just so amazing how many of these extremely beautiful beaches are here on the West coast!

Meelup Bay, Eagle Bay, Cape Naturaliste

Our next stop was just a short drive away, Meelup Bay! (1. Picture)
Just another paradise beach!
Here we stopped only for a short look around and went then to Eagle Bay, also only a short drive away! (2.+3. picture)
Here Kara went for a swim. I stayed out of the water of course!
After Kata had here swim and a short break at the beach we went up to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.
We stooped at a lookout for a nice view one a bay. (4. picture)
Here in Australia you obviously always need to pay an entry fee to see a lighthouse up close. We didn't want to pay for it and just took a short walk around the area and got anyway a nice view of the lighthouse!
After that, we were back on the road to the last point on our to-do list, Canal Rock!Read more

Canal Rock

We honestly didn't really know what to expect here.
Well, we were blown away when we saw this!

This is such a powerful place! The ocean is so powerful here and all the rocks around us made us feel pretty small.
We climbed around some big rocks to get some views.
I think we spend around 30-40 min here exploring the area and just enjoying it.

After that it was time to drive to Margret River were I have booked myself into a hotel for tonight so I can hopefully sleep good and gonna feel better tomorrow again. With the medication, it's working but I am still not feeling good. Kara decided to stay on a campground tonight.
We had some problems to find a campground for her, as one were closed, one full and the other one had only powered sites left... In the end, she took a powered site though it was pretty expensive but better than not finding anyplace at all. Of course, I offered her to stay with me in my room, but she wanted me to get a good rest and sleep to get better again.
After I had dropped her off I went to my hotel, the Surfpoint Resort a little bit outside of Margaret River closed to the ocean! A nice place with a big kitchen with everything in you could possibly be needed.
I just had a quick shower and was cooking and eating some pasta, but I felt so bad that I could not eat so much, it's so hard to eat when you have so much pain in the throat.

During the night I had obviously some fever as I was feeling hot and then cold all the time.

Hamelin Bay and Cape Leeuwin

I was waking up around 6.30 this morning and was feeling much better!
Fresher and more energetic again! Still super much pain in the throat and headache but at least I don't feel sick anymore.
It was definitely the right decision to stay in a hotel for this night as it got super windy later in the evening and during the whole night!

At first, I went for another shower as I have been sweating so much during the night.
After that, I went to the kitchen to fix my breakfast. Eating is still super painful and takes a lot of time.
After breakfast, I went back to my room to pack my stuff and I left around 9.30 am to pick up Kara from the campground!
She was already waiting for me outside the campground, so we were loading in her stuff again and then had a little brainstorming about today.

And then we were going again.

First Stop, Hamelin Bay!
You may think just another beautiful beach but Hamelin Bay is the only place here in the south where you can say some rays!

And we where lucky there were quite a few rays around close to the beach, most of the smaller but we also saw one really big one!
I know you can't see the manta ray so good on the picture but I had to really fight for this picture as there were so many people around. But you can see that it was a really big one! Pretty cool anyway!

After the meeting with the Manta Ray, we walked back to my car and went to Cape Leeuwin.
Also here you need to pay to get closer to the lighthouse, what we didn't.
We took a walk around the area and found the rocky area that looks so different from everything else we have seen so far today!Read more

Road through many National Parks

After we left Cape Leeuwin we started to drive towards Pemberton.
We past through many National Parks, such as Blackwood River National Park, Milyeannup National Park, Hilliger National Park, and Greater Beedelup National Park.

It's hard to describe the feeling of driving through this park! They are all so beautiful and full of giant trees! Kara is always trying to take some pictures while I am driving but you can not really capture it well on a picture, even though the pictures are really good!
We didn't see so much wildlife here, no kangaroos around.

We stopped for lunch in the Gloucester National Park.
We had a quick lunch as there are some nasty big, bloodsucking, flying creatures who were terrorists us...
While I went for a short walk around in the forest Kara wanted to climb up the Gloucester Tree.
I don't think I am having enough energy for this again and was deciding against it, also I would love to do it!
Kara said it was really nice but you could not see much more than the forest everywhere!
So we more or less were running back to the car to get away from these horrible creatures. Unfortunately, there were quite a few in the car as well, so it took us some time to get them out again.

After that, we drove to the Mount Frankland National Park, where we found a super small camping spot in the middle of nowhere.
Here is even a small hut and as the ground is too rocky we decided to sleep in the hut tonight.
First, we took a short walk around the area to the small river and Kara was even meeting a kangaroo when she was out searching for the toilet.
After that, we fixed our ”beds” and the played a little bit scrabble before we started to cook and had dinner.
We saw some black cockatoos flying around but it was hard to get a good picture from them as they stayed too far away from us! But still really cool to see them! They are mostly black but have some orange feathers in their tail!
After dinner, we were putting all the stuff back into the car and went to bed quite early. We heard some animals moving around the hut, we think it was some kangaroos. We always went out together in the dark to go to the toilet and also decided to weak each other up if someone needs to go to the toilet during the night!

We are definitely a good team!

Valley of the Giants

We woke up at 7 am, which is later for us and took it easy for a few more minutes.
First, we prepared breakfast.
I am feeling a little bit better again, which is really good!
So we had a nice and calm breakfast, then we packed together all our things and left the campground around 9 am.

Our first stop for today is The Valley of the Giants.
Whence were almost there we actually saw a Quokka beside the road! But we saw it too later to stop. I didn’t know that you can find them here, I thought they only live on Rottnest Island.
We decided against the treetop walk as it was super full and crowded and only did the walk around impressive old giant Tingle trees.
We felt really small beside them.
These trees are used to bushfire and survive them pretty well! Many of them have a tunnel through them, caused by fungus and fires but they are still alive and growing!

Conspicuous Beach

For our next stop, we went to Conspicuous Beach. It’s only a short walk from the carpark to the beach and this one is really breathtaking! 😳😍
So far my favorite beach here!
We took a walk around the beach and the walked up the small hill to the lookout point and a small break up there! Beautiful place! I just love it!Read more

Shelley Beach Lookout and Blowholes

Our next planned stop was at William Bay for the Elephant Rocks and Green Pools, but unfortunately, the William Bay National Park is closed at the moment and there is no other way to get to the Elephant Rocks and Green Pools otherwise.
So we kept on driving and stop at the Shelley Beach lookout for lunch instead.
Good be worst I would say 😉
Just another beautiful spot!
After a nice lunch break, we had new energy again to drive to some blowholes closed to Albany.
This was a 15 min downhill from the carpark to the blowholes.
Unfortunately, they were not blowing today. The ocean seems to be to calm, though it’s pretty rough here.
But that can happen, nothing to do about it. To here the water rumbling into the caves under our feeds was a little bit scary I can say. 🙈😅

So we walked back to my car and went to Albany for a quick shopping trip. We needed some vegetables and I need my own tent as it gets too tied for Kara in her tent if I use an air bed, which I need to use for my bed. So I decided to get myself an own, cheap tent and I found one for 12$!

Stirling Range National Park

The last part of our trip today was to and through the Stirling Range National Park.
We were shocked when I saw, that this park was burning probably not so long time ago!
It’s the first time we saw a burned area here. So far we just saw trees, that were burning at some point in their life as the bark stays black after that, sometimes for many years, some trees loos the burned bark when they are growing.

Almost the whole National Park had been burnt down, but you could see, that some trees had already green leaves again!

We arrived at our campground for tonight, just outside of the north end of Stirling Range National Park, it was not burning here, we ask when the bushfire was and it’s not even two months ago!
It burnt from boxing day (26.12.) until New Year. And already now the plants start to grow and recover again! That is amazing!

We had self-made mashed potatoes and fish fingers for dinner and went to bed around 9 pm again as we were tired!
Unfortunately, it got from one second to another really windy and we didn’t sleep so well overnight, because the wind never stopped... 😕Read more

Road to Fremantle

When I woke up this morning I was feeling much better! Just a little bit of pain in the throat and a little bit of headache left! Finally!
I was up around 7, Kara was already awake earlier but was ready until I woke up. After breakfast, today we had eggs 😋 we first went to fuel up and the drive towards Cranbrook driving beside the north end of the Stirling Range National Park.
So on the left side, we had burnt Forrest and on the right side farmland.
And quite soon we saw a kangaroo really closed to the road. We had to stop and turn around so we could take a picture! 😉
After around 15 min saw some Emus!
And then even more! Most of them were far away but some pretty closed to the road! So cool! 🤗

I Cranbrook we decided robust keep on going and we passed through all the time changing landscape. It gets tried and not so many national parks anymore.

We stopped in William for our lunch break and went straight to Fremantle after that. We needed to buy some food and then went to the campground. Wasn’t that easy to find on as many campgrounds we called had no places for a tent...
But now we are pretty close to the harbor what is good because tomorrow we will go to Rottnest Island! 🤗🤩

It’s pretty hot here, 37 degrees and it was not cooling down during the evening! It was still 30 degrees around 10 pm 😳Read more

Rottnest Island I

We got up around 7 am this morning. At first, we had breakfast and then we were preparing our sandwiches for today's trip to Rottnest Island.
After that, we got dressed and packed our stuff and at 8.50 am we left the campground and walked 15 minutes to the Blue Cat bus stop.
The Blue Cat is one of two free busses here in Fremantle. Pretty cool, that they have free busses here.

After a short ride with the bus, we jumped off close to the harbor and from here it took us only 3-4 minutes to walk to the ferry that will take us over to Rottnest Island. The Ferry just arrived when we walked to the landing place. So our timing was perfect. We had to wait only a few minutes before they started the boarding.
The ferry was far away from full, which is nice!
We were expecting worst as we heard that there is a big swimming event on Rottnest Island and it should be super full already today.

The ride over to Rottnest Island took only 35 min. Kara was feeling a little bit seasick but luckily not to bad.
When we arrived we tried to find the place where we are supposed to pick up our bikes for today. We hired bicycles to explore the island with.
After 15 min of searching, we already saw our first Quokkas 😍, we gave up and asked at the information center for help.
After that, it was easy to find the shop where we picked up our bicycles and helmets of coarse as well!
And then we went out of the village onto the island. We had decided to do a loop around the island, starting on the north side of the island so we will have enough time to snorkel in Salmon Bay without stressing out because we need to be back in the village around 5 pm.
We stopped at a lot of beautiful bay with either the same beaches!
The island have a lot of little hills so we had to drive up and down all the time, what was not so easy as the bike are not so good once 🙈😅Read more

Rottnest Island II

After a while, the weather started to get better and it was less cloudy and even hotter than before.
It was around 32 degrees without the sun already 😅
Quite warm for a tour on a bike around the island. We took it easy and stopped quite often to enjoy the view and rest a little bit.

Unfortunately, Kara was still not feeling good and after a while even feeling worst.
She didn’t want to stop on the way, she decided that she want to go as straight as possible to Salmon Bay. But she really wanted me to keep on exploring and stop as often and where I want. I tried to convince her that it’s no problem for me to go with her to Salmon Bay, but she really doesn’t want it and told me to keep ongoing. I had a bad feeling about it but in the end, I did it.Read more

Rottnest Island III

So I went all the way to the west end of Rottnest Island, Cape Vlamingh.
This part was definitely more challenging for the first part of our tour. At the cape, I took a break to eat a little bit and fill up my energy for the way back. I got a little lizard visiting me!
After around 20 min I went back to my bike and continued to drive.
I must say, my ass was already hurting quite much by now 😬
And my legs got much faster tired.
On the way to Salmon Bay, I took the short detour to the lighthouse and here I saw a few Quokkas, the first once since the once we saw in the village.
I took some pictures and went to the lighthouse for a shortstop and then kept on driving towards Salmon Bay.Read more
