    Over Oamaru to Moeraki

    It was raining overnight and the morning, but at least it was not getting so cold again as last night!
    It also stopped raining around 8 o'clock, so that was nice.

    I anyway took it easy in the morning and I don't have to much planned for today, as I can't really say, what the weather is going to be today.
    The first stop was in Oamaru at the Farmers Market.
    I got some lovely berries 😋
    I also stopped at the lookout but decided against the penguin colony as it is the wrong time of the day to see them. And I don’t want to spend money on a tour.
    Next time!
    I did not really stop somewhere on the way to the Moeraki Boulders, the big black cloud over me was stopping me from doing something.    Baca lagi

    Moeraki Boulders

    The last stop for today was at the famous Moeraki Boulders!

    What a beautiful place this is!
    I stopped here fast around lunchtime but as it was high tide then you couldn’t see them so good so I went then to the campground instead.

    Now it was low tide. And also not so many people around anymore as around lunchtime! I like that!

    I took a nice walk around and looked at all the boulders.
    I was surprised to find out that the boulders are full of small crystals on the inside. As some of them have collapsed already you could see that the inside is full of small crystals, wow 🤩

    I was wondering a little bit in the beginning if they can really be a natural event.
    But they really are! They are inside the cliffs and as the ocean and wind are eroding the cliff more and more boulders are showing up!

    Katiki Reserve

    As it was too early to go and look for some penguins and if coarse it was also high tide so the Moeraki Boulders are also not so good to see, I decided to check in early at the campground and take it easy until the later afternoon/ evening.

    The owner of the campground was really helpful and gave me a lot of information about the best time to visit the penguins and the Moeraki Boulders.
    As he looked up the high and low tide times for me, I said that I was thinking to go to the Moeraki Boulders at sunset, and he only said, no not at sunset! You need to go there for the sunrise, that's the best light you can get.
    Ok, I don't like to get up so early, but we will see what I am going to do.
    I was also surprised to hear that you can see the penguins already around 4 pm! I thought they are always going onshore in the late evening closed to sunset.

    After a while thinking backward and forward my plan was, to visit Katiki and the penguins in the afternoon and on the way back pass by the Moeraki Boulders. At least it will be low tide then.

    The first animal I saw when I came to the Katiki Reserve was actually a Yellow-eyed Penguin 😍
    How lucky I am! He was standing down close to the beach on the grass and was enjoying the sun 😊
    After a while watching this little fella I took a walk around the area. I saw a lot of fur seals everywhere, some were really close!
    It's a lot of birds around here as well, so there is much to see and the weather was so beautiful now, just a bit too windy, again 🙈
    When I came back to the first beach, the penguin was gone. But therefor there was another one up on the cliff and much closer to the track 🥰 Posing around like a rockstar and absolutely didn't care about all the people taking pictures.
    So amazing and so nice, that I got to see two penguins in such a short time!
    The yellow-eyed penguins are really rare and endangered.
    On the way back I met a woman how told me, that she was here already once, 10 years ago and there all the hill was covered with trees and bushes, what is now fields for cows, and there are used to be so many penguins all the way up the hill. So that was actually a little but sad to here, because that what we humans did to the penguins.. Destroy their habitat and now they are endangered, because of us 😕    Baca lagi

    Road to Dunedin

    After my early morning photo session, I went back to the campground at 6.30 and tried to sleep a little bit more.
    Around 8.30 I got up and had a nice breakfast. Then it was time to hit the road again. The weather forecast for today is bad. Much wind and rain around everywhere in the south...
    But the wind has a big plus, it usually never rains for a long time when it is blowing so much. And that’s what I got. A lot of wind, horrible wind and a few showers here and there. I tried to anyway stop on the way to Dunedin and see some stuff.

    The first stop was at a seal colony at Shag point. I saw a lot of seals laying around and doing notice. With the wind you don’t smell them, that’s really nice!

    The next stop was at Matanaka to see some old farmhouses.
    I was surprised, that I could actually walk into them as well. It was nice to see.
    Then I drove to the Evansdale Cheese Factory to buy some cheese.

    I can say the wind was getting worse now. 😬
    I anyway stopped at the Puketeraki lookout.
    The view was amazing and luckily I didn’t need to walk anywhere from there. All walking tracks I just passed as it’s too dangerous to go on a walk through a forest or up a hill today.

    After that the weather was so bad, that I decided to go directly to the campground and skip the rest of the Sightseeing-Tour for today!
    Good decision!
    It was horrible throughout the whole afternoon and evening. And it got really cold as well 😬
    Not nice!
    But it was nice to have a lazy afternoon today!
    I just hope the weather is better tomorrow, but it’s not looking like it. 🙈    Baca lagi

    Dunedin I

    This morning was full of rain. It was mostly short showers but quite heavy once. As I anyway gonna stay one more night here on the campground I was not in a hurry to leave and took it extremely clam the whole morning. Around 12 o'clock the weather seems to be quite ok and stabile so I left the campground for some exploring around the area and the city.

    The first stop was just a few kilometers away from the campground. A short but steep walk was leading to a nice small waterfall. Was good to stretch the legs again!

    After that I went to the Signal Hill Lookout.
    That was a really nice place with a beautiful view over Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula!
    The weather was really nice by now, still blowing a bit, but that's ok!

    The next stop on my lost was the botanic garden in Dunedin. It's a really big place with a lot to see and discover. Don't know how long I was walking around here 😉
    I was so impressed that I forget to have more pictures 🙈😬

    I think you can spend a whole day here without any problem!    Baca lagi

    Dunedin II

    As a tourist, I can't miss the famous Baldwin Street.
    It was for a long time the steepest street in the world, now it's ”only” the steepest street in the southern hemisphere, as the steepest street in the world is now in Wales!
    Of course, I walked all the way up to the top! 💪🏼
    It's a good walk up I can say 😂

    After that, I went to the city center. I found a really cheap parking place and went off to explore the city center. I must say, I like Dunedin! It's a really nice town with a lot of old buildings that give the whole town a lot of charm!

    In the later afternoon, I returned to the campground. Satisfied with the weather today and hungry like hell!
    It's time to taste the cheese I bought yesterday so today's dinner was cracker and cheese! I can say, the is a really, really good cheese! 🤗    Baca lagi

    Otago Penisula

    I woke up to a beautiful blue sky and I wind at all! Awesome! That’s really perfect as my plane for today is to discover the Otago Peninsula.

    I left the campground around 10 am and it’s was just a 25 minutes drive to my first Stopp, a lookout point.
    I of coarse was also climbing up the hill to get the best view over the peninsula and Dunedin!

    Next Stopp on the way was an old castle or so.
    I couldn’t really find the way down there so I only looked at it from the road.

    Then I went to the Sandymount Track. I walked the loop track here. First I passed through an old forest, next was a field with a lot of sheep to a nice viewing platform, then I had to continue over the field. I found a new friend in a sheep, that was starting to talk to me and answered me also all the time 😂
    That was funny.
    The track was going up a hill, a sandy hill. That was the hardest part, walking uphill on loose sand.
    The last part of the track was through bushes so it was a really nice and interesting track with a lot of different features and awesome views!    Baca lagi

    Monarch Cruises

    For the afternoon I booked a combo package.
    First I will cruise around the Otago Peninsula with Monarch Cruises and then I will visit the Penguin Place to hopefully see some Yellow-eyed Penguins and learn more about the wildlife here.

    I had to check-in 15 min before departure time.
    As I was done with my walks around 1 pm I went to the campground first and had some crackers with the lovely cheese for lunch!

    Then shortly before 2.30 pm I left the campground and was very good at time at the check-in for my cruise, it’s only a 10 min drive.

    The boat was just coming back from the previous tour so we had to wait until everything was ready dir our tour. Then it was time to board the ship. We were waiting a couple of minutes for another two people that were late but had to leave before they were showing up.
    We first went to some Shags colonies. There were two different Shags to see, on the first picture you can see the Otago Shags, that are only found around this area in New Zealand.
    In the second picture, it’s the Spotted Shags.
    They prefer totally different Typ of terrain as you can see!
    Our skipper gave us a lot of information about the area and the animals around us.
    Next up where the fur seals. One was trying to get up the cliffs but didn’t make it. We also saw a few puppies laying around in the middle of the fourth picture.
    Then we turned around the corner to see the nesting place for the Royal Albatrosses. It’s the only breeding colony on land!!

    Unfortunately, the weather conditions were not good to see them flying around. The weather is to good today 🙈😂
    No wind at all. Albatross needs wind to glide around. Their long but narrow wings are not made for flying long distances.
    You maybe can see some white spots on the last pictures, these are the nesting albatross.
    But it’s hard to see them.
    We then went out to the open ocean and tried to find some albatross testing on the ocean. We were actually lucky to spot one, but that one was flying away from us when we came closer.
    They breed only every second year. It’s a 12-month cycle to get and raise a chick, so after that the parents separated and leave for one year, just traveling around on the ocean and never touching land until it’s time to come back and breed again.
    The juveniles travel around for 4-8 years after leaving their nest without touching any land until they come back to breed for the first time!!
    They drink salt water and don’t like to be on the land at all. They rest on the ocean.
    Really interesting.

    On the way back we even saw two Little Blue Penguins, but they were to fast to be caught on a picture.
    Our skipper really tried to find some albatross, crossing around the area but we were not lucky. That’s how it is, I was at first lucky about the good weather conditions but in the end not anymore 🙈😂

    Anyway, it was a nice tour with a lot of information.
    Now I am looking forward to see some Yellow-eyed Penguins 🤗

    Penguin Place I

    After the cruise, I had plenty of time to take me to the penguin place. It’s only a 3 minutes drive and I was booked on the tour at 4.45 pm.

    So I hade to wait a little bit there until the tour was starting.
    We first got into the information center and our guide Adrian told us a lot about the Yellow-eyed Penguins.
    There are only around 700 of them left so they are really, really rare and close to extinction. He also said, if you see one of them in nature you are lucky if you see two you are very, very lucky and if you see three of them on the same day you might go and play the lotto the same day, as you are extremely lucky!

    Their biggest problem is that we humans have destroyed their territory so much, that they don’t find nesting places anymore. They need shelter from the sun under some bushes and trees as the young once can not control their body temperature and overheat really fast. They also don’t like to live to closed to each other as they are the most unsocial penguins in the world so they need extremely much space as well.

    So the family that owns this farm since 1966 has started to rebuild their natural habitat for the penguins in 1980 and they do all they can to help them to increase their numbers again.
    Unfortunately, it is not so easy.

    They also have a kind of daycare for penguins, they get them from animal hospitals and feed them up until they can get released again into the wild. Their success rate is actually 95%!!
    They get the penguins from all over New Zealand, or better said from the south part of the South Island.
    Right now they have 4 chicks, which are here because their parents struggled to raise them.
    Then they have a juvenile yellow-eyed that had problems with his feathers and that one needs to stay here until the mold is over.
    They also have an adult Yellow-eyed Penguin, that was found underweight and need to get more weight before that one can get released into the wild again and then there is one Fjordland penguin as well!

    After all the information we went to see the patients. We had to be totally quiet and got a little bit of time to see them all and take pictures. That closed I probably never come to see them again.

    Penguin Place II

    Then we jumped on a bus for a short ride to the reserve. It is all on private land and the owners are operating the tours and it’s the only way to get to the beach. Adrien also said that they are using all the money from the tours to plant more trees, protect the penguins more, take care of penguins that need to be looked after for a while. So it’s nice to know, that the money I spend to see some rare penguins is actually used to help them!

    After the short ride, we started a short bushwalk.
    The tracks are really good and we got strict orders to stay together and be really quiet, as they have been spotting a juvenile near a pond and that where we are going first now.

    A part of the track is through some tunnels, it all is build to keep the impact on the penguins as small as possible. The viewing shelters are like small huts with viewing places.
    Luckily the juvenile was still there, enjoy the sun 🤗
    Adrian told us, that there are only 25 yellow-eyed penguins living on this beach, that’s not much! It’s a really big beach!!
    So they really don’t like to be too close to each other.
    After watching the juveniles sunbath we went to see a 9 1/2 week old chick with his mom. But they have been unfortunately disappearing. Adrian went off to try to find them, but he had no luck, though he said he could hear the little one screaming for his parents.
    So we went down to the stone cliffs and watched some lazy fur seals laying around in the sun. We got to know, that this area is between two big breeding areas and all the fur seals here are young males, chased away from the old males from the breeding colony’s around.

    We then went back to the nesting area, hoping that for someone of the breeding family had already returned. We found a little blue penguin in a nesting box on the way. As they are more social their boxes are very closed to each other all around the area.

    On the way to the viewing shelter Adrian suddenly stopped and said, I see the chick, let’s go another way. And then we all saw him, climbing up the hill, going back home I guess!
    So lovely fluffy he is! 🥰
    That was also the end of our tour, so we walked back to the bus and drove back to the center.

    It was really nice to get so much information about the yellow-eyed penguin and I know now even more how lucky I was to see two of them the other day in the Katiki Reserve and I also now know, that the first one was an adult yellow-eyed and the second one a juvenile 😊    Baca lagi

    Tunnel Beach

    Also today the weather is quite nice. Still not really warm, but that's ok!
    It's sunny and a little bit windy.
    I went off after breakfast, first stop the famous Tunnel Beach. Jap it's really famous, a lot of cars around and hard to find a parking place 🙈 but I was lucky and got one after a short while.
    The walk to Tunnel Beach was down a hill, a real hill... Looking forward to the walk back already now😬😳

    But when I came around the first corner and saw where I was going I knew straight away it's gonna be so worth it!

    Already the area around is breathtaking with the coves and caves all around the coastline! The ocean is really rough today, also it's not blowing so much jet.

    To come to the beach you need to pass through a narrow tunnel with quite a few steps down the hill. The beach is only accessible around low tide!
    There was a seal or I actually think it was a female sea lion laying right under the tunnel on the beach, sleeping. Totally relaxed and absolutely not disturbed by all the people around. Some stupid people from China had to sit half a meter beside the seal/ sea lion for a selfie 🤬
    I had it that they can't respect the animals and keep a distance. 🤬
    I also said that out loud so they could hear it. It's also dangerous as they were standing between the animal and the ocean. So if the seal gets scared it will try to run to the ocean or in this case probably attack the stupid people in the way.

    I then took a walk around the small beach and then back up through the tunnel.
    The walk back to my car was better than expected! It was tough, but I stopped only 2 times to catch my breath and that was surprisingly less! 🤗    Baca lagi

    Road to Nugget Point

    After a short break at the carpark from Tunnel Beach, I went towards Nugget Point. It got more and more cloudy on the way, but the sun was coming through here and there. I now I am driving towards the bad weather, but that rain will hit the whole south of New Zealand so it doesn't really matter where I go now. My plan is to use the fair weather to travel as far as possible until the rain hit me at some point this weekend.

    I stopped a few times during the way at some lookouts or beaches. It's really flat here compare to all the hills in and around Dunedin! Much nicer to drive for me. I also stopped in Balclutha for a fast shopping at the New World supermarket and I decided to fuel up here to be sure I will make it to Invercargill as I will not pass so many bigger towns the next 2-3 days anymore 😊 until I arrive in Invercargill.     Nugget Point

    In the early afternoon, I arrived at Nugget Point.
    I walked up and down the little hill to the lighthouse. It's a really nice place also with clouds now!

    Unfortunately, I couldn't go all the way to the lighthouse because former visitors have obviously been chasing around a poor shag so it is totally exhausted now and stressed out, so the lighthouse keeper had to close the last part of the track to protect the shag. He also had called for help from a wildlife unit to take a look at the shag and decided if they need to take it with and take care of it for some days or if they just help the shag to set off again.
    Humans can be horrible 🤬
    I don’t understand why someone can do something like this to an animal...

    As the weather wasn’t so good and the wind freshening up I decided to go to the campground, with a fast Stopp at Roaring Bay to see, if there are some penguins around. It’s too early for them, I know that, but always better to take a look! 😉

    My plan is, to get up early tomorrow and catch the sunrise again!

    Nugget Point sunset

    In the evening the clouds and the wind disappeared and I decided to give the sunset a try and went pack to Nugget point around 9.15 pm.

    You never know, how the weather will be tomorrow and I just for the feeling, I am not going now I will regret it tomorrow!Baca lagi

    Purakaunui, Matai and Horseshoe Falls

    I woke up at 5 o'clock this morning, a perfect time to go for the sunset at Nugget Point but unfortunately the weather is not with me today, it's super cloudy and not worth it to even drive and give it a try.
    Good, I was going there yesterday evening.
    I tried to sleep a little bit more, but a Bellbird was singing so loud somewhere closed to my car, that it was impossible to fall asleep again 🙈😂

    So I got up and had breakfast and then was leaving he campground early. I anyway needed to leave early today to catch the low tide later.

    The first stop was at the Purakaunui Falls. Really nice and especially wide waterfall! ( First two pictures)
    I am now exploring the Catlins!
    So beautiful area, lush green hills. It looks more like the north island here!
    It's pretty cloudy but dry and the wind is not to bad, yet!

    The next quick stop was at the Matai ( 4. picture) and the Horseshoe Falls ( last two pictures).

    A nice short walk here and two nice waterfalls as well!
    I had to hurry a little bit to still be in time for my next stop.    Baca lagi

    Cathedral Caves

    10 Januari 2020, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

    Shortly before 10 am I arrived at the Cathedral Caves carpark. I thought the low tide was at 10 am, but the nice lady there told me it was at 9 am and I would need to hurry to make it at least to some of the caves.

    Ok, I thought no problem. After around 15 minutes walk down the hill and alongside the beach I reached the first one, but my plan was to go first to the once that are further way before the water level gets too high. I met a family, they were on their way back, and they told me, that I should be fine to go a little further, there is only one tricky spot around a corner but if you time it well with the waves it's no problem.

    I took off my shoes and was trying my luck.

    It went really good so I could see quite a few caves. They are really big and you can't see how long they are. I didn't explore them more, don't need to risk it with the water pushing an and the weather is not so nice, pretty windy here now and that makes some big waves. On the way back I got pretty lucky as well until I reached the tricky corner. My luck was over. Big wave, much water and I got wet halfway over my knees 😳😬
    It's cold I can say 😬🙈
    The only positive thing in this moment: my shoes are at least still dry 🥳

    As wet as I was I went into the last two big caves and found out that they are actually connected in the end!

    Then I started to get too cold so I washed my feeds in a little pool, put my shoes back on and walked back to the carpark.

    Here I got changed in dry trousers and then I was ready for the next adventure 💪🏼    Baca lagi

    Mc Lean Falls and Florence Hill Lookout

    I also stopped at the Florence Hill Lookout!

    The next walk was at the Mc Lean Falls.

    This was a really nice short walk to a really nice waterfall.
    The waterfall is split into different parts. The upper part is the biggest waterfall.
    Then it goes down over some sort of stairs to one more drop-down, the last part is called The Chute.    Baca lagi

    Koropuku Falls and Curio Bay

    This might be one of the nicest walks I did. Really short though but so beautiful!
    The walk to Koropuku Falls was through a beautiful forest over a very small path, steps over a river, climbing over rocks.
    I just loved it!
    The waterfall itself is also really nice, not so big but it fits the place.

    After that, I went to Curios Bay and took a walk around there as well. You can see some fossil trees at one part of the beach! That’s pretty cool, I have never seen anything like this before!
    There is also a nice bushwalk and you can go up I the cliffs.
    The ocean is pretty rough today with all the wind.
    I didn't stay here long as I had two more stops on my way to Invercargill and the weather is not getting better at all, it's getting worse.    Baca lagi

    Slope Point and Waipapa Point

    Slope Point is the most southern point of the South Island! Now I have been visiting the most Southern Point of the South and North Island as well as the two points most north of both islands 💪🏼

    The wind was really strong now, it is like a storm now. It was really hard to walk against the wind. 💨
    I was really looking forward to the end of this day soon. I started to get tired as well, but I had only one stop left on my to-do list until I could drive to Invercargill where I will stay for 3 nights.

    The last stop was at the Waipapa Point and Lighthouse and it was a good one!

    With the bad weather, my plan was to just take a fast look around and then hit the road to Invercargill.
    Well, it came different. I met two women closed to a beach that told me, that there is a big sea lion swimming up and down the coast. So I was spending around 15 minutes watching him and hoping he would decide to get out of the water.
    He did not and I got tired of the weather and walk back to the carpark. I stopped at the lookout to the beach at the carpark as well, just to be sure to not miss a sea lion there and what was I seeing further down the beach, where I stood 15 minutes waiting for the sea lion to get out of the water?!
    Mister sea lion was on his way out!!!

    Well what shall I do, it's gonna be my first sea lion I guess, so of course, I walked back as fast as possible and I got there just in time, 2-3 minutes before he went back into the water! Lucky me! 😊
    It was a huge fella I can say, so much bigger than the fur seals! Wow! Now I am happy and more than ready to drive to the campground and end this day.
    I arrived at the campground and at 5.30 and at 6 pm it started to rain. Good timing!

    I just took a quick shower and a fast dinner and went to bed early, is was so tired!    Baca lagi

    Day off

    Today I have a calm day. I really need it!
    I used the day to get my car to the service and the oil changed. Nice system here. You go there, leave your car and they tell you when you can come back. In my case they said, it takes 30 min.
    No need to make an appointment, don’t even think they do it at all.
    And the whole thing is costing 84$ if they use up to 4 liters of oil. If your car needs more, you pay the rest extra. I had to pay 92$ and my car is in good condition!

    The waiting time I used to try to find a hot water bottle. I am tired of freezing overnight and sleeping badly because of it.
    It wasn’t so easy to find one, but the 5. store finally had one! And I really mean, one!!

    Lucky me!
    The rest of the day I was spending in the campground, washing my clothes, planning the next days and booking some exciting trips as well 🤩
    Of course, I found some good prices 😉🤗

    The weather is bad. Blowing like hell and in the afternoon the rain came as well, but it got much warmer during the day!! Sooo nice!! Must be around 20 degrees or maybe even more!    Baca lagi

    Bluff

    The weather today is strange. Changing between sunshine, rain, storm and something in between.
    Good that I have not planned in so much for today.

    I went to Bluff to take a look around this small town, the gateway to Steward Island. I decided against visiting Steward Island mostly because of the weather and also because I found out, that the ferry to Steward Island ist quite expensive.
    And I have enough wind and rain here at the moment and don’t need to pay much money for it to have the same shit weather there.

    I went to the lookout point what was quite a steep drive up the hill but the view was nice.
    I also went to Sterling Point for a small walk around there.
    Not too much, what was good! As I left Bluff it started to rain like hell! Good timing.
    I went back to the campground to recharge my batteries even more.
    The next days will be full of adventures and activities so I will need it! 🤗    Baca lagi

    Riverton Lookout and Cosy Nook

    After a good breakfast, I left the campground around 10 am. Driving on a small road can lead to some unexpected problems. 🙈😂
    I got stuck behind some sheep’s, well not some, it was a lot of sheep’s 😂
    I was stuck there for like 20 minutes or so? During that time another car showed up and was driving next to the Quad for quite some time, I guess a neighbor.
    After a while, they gave me a sign to follow the car and we were passing through all the sheep. Took at least 5 minutes but I think it was longer.
    Nice from them to help me pass. I had to be extremely careful as some sheep’s tried to pass between the cars.

    As the weather was not so good in the morning, it was actually raining a little bit as well, I did only a short walk to a lookout in Riverton instead of the loop track as I originally had planned.

    For the next stop, the weather was already much better, still pretty wind but at least the sun was shining now.
    Cosy Nock is a rough coastline with some nice rocks around and the pretty rough ocean.    Baca lagi

    Gemstone Beach and McCrackens Lookout

    Gemstone Beach was my next stop. You can actually find gemstones here if you are lucky!
    It’s a lot of stones on the beach in all different kinds of colors. As I don’t want to carry around more stuff in my backpack, later on, I didn’t look around for some nice stones. 🙈
    But a lot of people were there and doing it.

    McCracken's Lookout was just a short drive away and a nice stop as well! Still pretty windy but otherwise it’s getting warmer and warmer!

    Clifton Limestone Caves

    Now I am leaving the coast to drive up into the land to the Fiordland.
    I am really looking forward to it as I have heard so much about the Fiordlandnationalpark and all the sounds, waterfalls, rivers and of course mountains.

    I stopped the Clifton Limestone Caves to take a look around the caves. You can actually go into them and follow them for a few hundred meters. I was only going a short part of it, as I was alone and I don’t like the idea to get into a long cave on my one and at the part, I turned around I would need to go down on my knees to pass under a hanging rock and I was just not feeling for that at all 😉😂

    It’s a really nice area around as well with all the green hills and the limestones here and there.    Baca lagi
