    Kepler Track

    After a relaxed morning with a good breakfast, I went to the Rainbow Reach to do a walk on the famous Kepler Track. As the Routeburn Track, it is one of the Great Walks in New Zealand. Unfortunately, also this one is so expensive as the other once so I was deciding against walking the whole track, 150$ per night is way too much.
    So I only walked from the Rainbow Reach to the Moturau Hut, which is 6 km one way.

    It is a really nice walk through a beautiful forest with a lot of birds. I saw a lot of Robins and Fantails on the track, some came really close to me!

    I could stay so long at Moturau Hut and the little beach there as the Sandflys got nasty again.

    I have quite much pain in my muscles from yesterday’s climb up to Lake Marian so this walk was really nice for my legs as it is mostly flat with just a few ups and downs. I took it really easy, walked some sidetracks as well so it took me 3 hours and 15 minutes in total. Definitely not in my best-walking shape today, but that’s all right.

    After that, I went to buy some food and to fuel up, so I hopefully don’t need to fuel up in Queenstown 🤞🏼 where fuel and everything else is super expensive.
    After that, I went to Athol, a small little town halfway to Queenstown where I found a lovely small campground for only 10$ per night. I like that! 🤗

    I hade a calm afternoon as I was really tired in my legs and it’s nice to not be up and going the whole day all the time.
    Tomorrow I will go to Glenorchy for 1-2 days, don’t know jet and after that, I will visit a family in Queenstown that I met last time I was here and they were inviting me to their place. 😊    Читать далее

    Lake Wakatipu

    After a sleepless night, I felt ill when I went to bed at got worse during the night. I didn’t fall asleep before 1 am, was awake again at 3 and then at 5 am again as the chickens on the campground were awake then and woke me up as well 🙄😅
    I pushed in some earplugs but didn’t really manage to sleep so much more. At least I was not feeling bad anymore.
    I hade breakfast in the sun as the weather is really good again and then I was heading towards Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu.

    It was only a short drive to the beginning of the lake. I stopped a few times to take some pictures as you can see 😉    Читать далее

    Lookout over Queenstown

    The Remarkables

    There are two walks in this area. A walk to Lake Alta and a walk to a lookout. The walk to the lookout looks quite steep so I was deciding to just do the walk to Lake Alta. Even this walk was quite tough in the beginning but got easier after 10-15 minutes.
    The lake is nice and the landscape around as well. I even found some snow.
    I overheard a couple talking about climbing up on a hill on the right side of the lake. On CamperMate it’s also standing, that you can climb up the hill and down on the other side to come to the lookout point. Obviously, a family did it with a 5-year-old and their comment was, that it was not to bad and the little one managed well.
    So I thought I could give it a go, as I am not alone doing it.
    This was not a good idea, really not. Don’t know what this family have for a 5-year-old, I think it must be a goat or so 🙈😬😅
    The climb up was a real challenge, loose stones and it was really steep. Well, we got up somehow and the view from up there was stunning. We had to rest for a few minutes. Then I tried to find the path down on the other side. I never found a path, and it was really not easy to get down that hill.
    I managed luckily and my legs were shaking.
    I followed the track to the lookout and it was so worth it to go all the way. But I would never recommend it to anyone to do it. Never!

    After that, I walked back to my car on the lookout track, didn’t feel for a return track over the hill 😅

    It took me in total more than 3 hours, so I decided it’s was time to drive to Glenorchy where I will stay for two nights.
    For that, I had to pass through Queenstown. I can say, Queenstown is totally crazy. So full and so busy 😳
    I am glad I don’t need to stay in Queenstown next week!

    The road to Glenorchy is so nice to drive. Awesome views along the road all the time. Glenorchy is also more like my style. Small little town, not so overrun and definitely nicer in many ways.
    But the campground is expensive here, not as bad as in Queenstown but still really expensive, everything is supposed to be more expensive in the area around Queenstown I heard.

    Routeburn Track I

    I took it easy in the morning and that was my luck. My neighbors on the campground are leaving New Zealand today and they gave me a lot of their leftovers. A 1/2 salad, an Avocado, onion, lemon, cucumber, pepper, tomatoes, halloumi, beans, milk, bread, butter, and a 1/4 bottle white wine. It’s like Christmas and Easter on the same day for me 😍
    So in the next days, I will enjoy all the food I got for free.

    After that, I went to explore the area.
    I want to walk a part of the Routeburn Track from this end as well.
    The road to the carpark was not the best but I made it there. Unfortunately one of my tires seems to lose some air, so I will need to check this out when I am back in Glenorchy.
    Anyway, I started my walk and I really enjoyed this one. It is, in fact, a really nice track. Not too steep but still challenging a little bit.
    Following a river with an amazing color that I just want to swim in it as it is such a warm day today again.
    But the river is pretty cold so I skipped the swimming part 😂😅    Читать далее

    Routeburn Track II

    I walked all the way to the Routeburn Flats Hut. It's 6,5 km one way and I got a really nice view of the mountains there. I spend around 15 minutes here and then decided to walk back instead of continuing to the Routeburn Falls Hut.

    It's so warm now and I also want to stop at some other places on the way back to Glenorchy as well.

    On the way back I saw a few Robins around. One was sitting down right beside me and watched me. Also, some Fantails have been around today again. I really love the birds here, especially the Robin and Fantail.    Читать далее

    Lookout Isengard

    On the way back I stopped at two points beside the road where they were filming some parts of Lord of the Rings. Isengard was filmed in this area, well I don't remind or recognize it but it’s so nice here anyway so already that was worth it the stop 😉

    After that, I went pack to Glenorchy, checked the air at my tires, actually 3 of them had to less air 😅
    I fixed that and will keep an eye on it and if it happen again I will let someone take a look at them if I need new ones. Only the one I had to change a few weeks again was fine.
    After that, I went for a walk through the town and checked out the small stores everywhere and then I went back to the campground.    Читать далее

    Bobs Cove

    This morning was a little bit tricky as the power went off in the whole town so we had to improve at the campground a little bit. So I left a little bit later as usual but not to bad.
    The weather is wonderful again and I enjoyed the view on the drive towards Queenstown. I stopped at Bob's Cove for a nice little walk around the area. The view from the hill was really nice but it gets quite warm now so I didn’t stay so long up there.Читать далее

    Moke Lake

    The next stop was at Moke Lake.
    I planned to do the walk around the Lake but was ending up sitting by the Lake, having a little bit of lunch and read a book. It's just so nice and peaceful here and I was not feeling for a walk anymore.
    Well I got a nice sunburn 🙈🙄

    Ithilien Camp and Creagh Cottage

    As I missed the sideroad on the way to Moke Lake I drove back a few kilometers on the Queenstown-Glenorchy Road to the Twelve Mile Delta, a Lord of the Ring film location.
    It's a little bit hard to see as the vegetation has bee growing a lot in the last couple of years, but it is where Frodo, Sam, and Gollum watch the battle between Faramir's Rangers of Gondor and the men (and Oliphaunts) of Harad. Sam and Gollum discuss coney cookery, after Gollum wants to eat the coney raw, Sam tells him: "There's only one way to cook coney".

    After that, I went to Arrow Junction, where I will stay for 3 nights. I had to pass through Queenstown and this city is totally crazy 😳
    I think it's overrun, but so far I was just passing through so it's hard to say. Will spend a day or more likely a half to explore the city on Wednesday.

    Leaving Queenstown felt good for now. It's only a 2 minutes drive from Queenstown to Arrow Junction.
    I was speechless when I arrived at ”my” little cottage for the next days.
    Last year I met a family and they were inviting me to stay at their place when I visit Queenstown. And as they own two cottages and one is empty for the next couple of days, they said I can stay here instead of sleeping in my car on their farm. 😍
    I can’t say how lucky I am! It is such a lovely place with an awesome view of the area around.
    And I was even more shocked when they refused to get paid for it! 😳
    I am allowed to stay here for free, I got even a bottle of their own vine, they have a vineyard as well, some treats and other stuff!

    They invited me for dinner on Wednesday as well!

    Arrow River and Arrowtown

    Relaxed morning for me. No stress to check out in time or anything booked or planned that I would need to leave early today.

    During breakfast, I decided that I drive to Arrowtown, to a parking place a little bit outside the town, and then walk alongside the Arrow River to the town center. It was a nice and easy walk. They were even filming a part of Lord of the Rings here by the river. It is supposed to be the place you see on the 3. and 4. picture.
    It is the scene where Awen with Frodo is haunted by the Nazgul and passing over the river.
    But not the part where the river washed the Nazgul, that was filmed in another place.

    From the river or was only a short walk to an old Chinese settlement. I took a look around here as well and then went to the town. Cute little town it is! Nice old buildings with a lot of nice shops, I really like the Remarkable Sweet Shop where you can buy the best fudge in the world. And you can even taste them all for free!!! They are all so good! It was really hard to choose which one to buy 🙈😂
    I was, in the end, ending up with the Sour Fudge and the White Chocolate Raspberry Ripple.
    I could buy then all, but they are not so cheap so I go with these two flavors I liked the most. 😊    Читать далее

    Kawarau River or the Argonath

    Next, I went to the Kawarau River where I was watching some crazy people doing their Bungy jump.

    It’s funny to watch them, but I think it’s way too expensive for a few seconds of adrenaline.
    Some of the jumpers even got a dip in the river. 😂
    I hope this was on purpose.

    After a while, I decided to walk to another LotR filming location that is on the other side of the highway.

    This one was a really nice spot, a nice canyon with a beautiful river. It is the Argonath that was placed here.
    A nice short walk up the hill on a gravel road, unfortunately, I didn’t find a way down to the river but I liked this place really much anyway.

    After that, I went back to my lovely cottage for the rest of the afternoon. I had a really nice dinner, with a nice salad with roasted halloumi and some rice as well with a glass of good wine and some fudge for dessert. 😊    Читать далее

    Gibbston Valley Canyoning

    The weather today doesn’t look so good. It’s really cloudy and at first, it was not looking like this will change at anytime soon.
    Shortly before 10 am I left the cottage to drive to Queenstown.
    I want to explore the city today.
    I was really lucky to actually find a free place to park my car that is also not costing anything and still quite close to the city center.
    So it was only a short walk beside the lake to the city center.
    And even the weather got nice now, not as warm as the last couple of days, but warm enough!
    Queenstown has a lot to offer. Many restaurants, pubs, shops and even more tour operators.
    It is a real challenge for me to stay strong here and don’t start to book tours like hell. There is so much you can do around Queenstown, some many things that I really like to do 🙈😬
    I went to buy some fudges for my friends as a little thank you for letting me stay at their cottage for free. Then I was really feeling for a pie, and I found a really good one that was actually not as expensive as expected. So I could really enjoy this one.
    Normally I wanted to eat one of the extremely famous Ferg Burgers, but I was just not hungry enough for one of their big burgers, but they looked really good and there are always a lot of people standing in a line, waiting to get their burger 😳

    For the afternoon I had booked a Canyoning trip, that I found for a really good price online.
    I was actually a little bit worried, that this one might be to easy because it sounded very easy on the website.
    We got picked up in the middle of Queenstown. I got teamed up with a family from Switzerland, that now lives in Nelson and a couple from India.
    After a short briefing, we left Queenstown to drive to the Gibbston Valley. It took around 35 minutes to drive here. We got our equipment from the guides and started to get changed, I was definitely ending up in the slow group as the other group was leaving at least 15 minutes before us.
    When everyone was ready we walked down to a little creek for some safety instructions and a little rope training. And then we started to walk to the canyon. We followed the creek for around 10 minutes and then had to climb down in the canyon.

    This canyon is totally different from the other canyons I have been into so far. It is partly very narrow, like 50cm I guess.
    It was a lot of climbing this time, sadly no jumps but some really good slides that made up for this.
    The water temperature is around 12 degrees we guessed, definitely not too cold so that is nice.

    We were moving quite slowly through the canyon as the couple from India were very insecure and also no swimmers, so they needed an extra hand a few times to get through everything, but they were really trying and doing all stuff.
    So we were a really good team! 💪🏼
    After a big slide the guide, Ross is his name, took the two children and told them to lay down on their back in the water. He then pushed them with the head first under the waterfall, or the former slide, so the water was pushing them down and they came up a few seconds later again. That looked really funny and in the end, everyone was doing it, even the couple from India was doing it as well! Really cool from them, as they can’t swim!

    At the end of the trip, we had to abseil down a waterfall. That was not so easy as the rocks were extremely slippy, but we all came down.
    Unfortunately, the trip came to an end here. We had around 15 minutes to walk back to the bus, where we got changed into our normal clothes and then drove back to Queenstown. We were supposed to be back in Queenstown at 6 pm but we were running late and were back in Queenstown around 6.45 or so.
    Together as a team, we convinced Ross to sell us the photos for a good price. Normally it’s 30$ pp but we got them all together for 30$ so we had to pay only 10$ each, the family and couple counts of coarse as one 😉
    Nice!

    After that, I rushed back to my car and left Queenstown as I was invited for dinner with Vicky and Jeremy.
    So I stopped only fast at the Cottage to hang up my wet stuff and get changed and then followed the road to their house.
    They have built themselves a really nice home and the food was sooo good and it was so nice to spend some hours with them.
    I gonna miss this place! It’s like a little paradise and their dog Lilly is so lovely and always happy, just like Snoopy! ❤️    Читать далее

    Kawarau River and Roaring Meg

    Today it is, unfortunately, time for me to leave my little lovely cottage behind and keep on traveling.
    I cleaned the whole cottage before I left as I don't want them to have any work with that! They got really happy about it 😉
    It was the least I could do!

    Today I will travel towards Wanaka along the Gibbston Valley and Kawarau River.
    I stopped at to nice place with a nice view of the river.

    Then I went to Cromwell, bought some fruits as this region is a real fruit region!
    A lot of small boxes and shops along the road with fresh fruits! Nice!
    I also took a walk around Cromwell, but it was getting really hot around lunchtime so I was not feeling for more.
    I then decided that I can already go to Wanaka and find a campground, hopefully, close to Lake Wanaka.
    I was lucky, the first one, right beside the lake had still spaces free, so I will stay here for three nights as well. 😊

    The heat was really exhausting, it's 31 degrees and I was not feeling for more moving around at all.
    I was thinking about going to swim, as my spot is right beside the lake, but the water is pretty cold. At least for me, everyone else seems to not care about it 🙈😬

    It was a calm and relaxed afternoon. I planned to go to bed early, as I want to get up in the middle of the night to hike up a hill for the sunrise 🙈😂

    Roy's Peak Track I

    Early morning for me today. My alarm was going at 2.45 am 😱😱
    I got dressed a d drove to the kitchen area as my camping spot is at the last end of the campground. I had a fast breakfast and fixed some sandwiches for the way as well and then I left the campground shortly past 3.30 to drive to Roy’s Peak carpark.
    It’s only a 5 km drive so I started to walk at 3.45 am.
    It was totally dark still and the stars were so good to see also the milky way. I even saw a shooting star 😊
    I had a flashlight with me, which was really good because the path is very uneven with a lot of rocks and holes around.
    The first part of the track was really steep, I was really struggling with that part.
    It is really different to walk in the middle of the night when you can't see a thing and have no clue about what you are actually up to 🙈
    For me it was good, don't know if I would have keep on going if I knew what I had in front of me 😬😂
    The only thing I knew is, that’s a 5-6 h return track.
    Well, I had to stop quite a few times as it was so steep and so though to get up. Luckily the track got a little bit better after around 30 minutes or so. There were some parts that were not so steep and even some flat parts as well, which was really nice to relax a little bit in between. 😅
    It was funny to watch all the small flashlight on the way up the hill. Most of them were in front of me, as I was obviously a bit late to start the track.
    Only three times I got passed by some guys and I passed once two other girls but otherwise, I saw no one, a few rabbits and a stoat was passing my way.
    Around 5 o’clock it slowly got a bit lighter and I started to realize what I had left. 😳😬
    I also started to realize that I would probably not make it all the way up to the top in time for the sunrise, but I actually didn’t care about it anymore, too exhausted.
    Shortly before 6 o’clock I reached the viewpoint and decided to stay here for the sunrise and continue up to the top after that.
    Best decision ever today!!

    As you can see from the pictures, the sunrise was stunning!!!! 😍🤩
    I couldn't believe it, how many different colors the sky can get! The view from here is also really good and the last part was, we were only three girls here, while we could see, that there were at least 50 people up on the top of Roy’s Peak.
    We helped each other to get pictures and moved around each other to not be in the way. We stayed there until 6.30 and then walked up together the last part. Only 1,5 km left, but probably the worst part of the track, as this one is a really steep and bad path as well.
    Good, I had company for this one, we were really motivating each other to get up to the top. The view from here is also really nice, but no one of us regrets it to spent the sunrise at the lower viewpoint. 😉
    It took us 35 min up and we then had a 45 minutes breakfast break up on the top, waiting for the sun to warm us up, as it got really cold during the sunrise. Luckily I was taking with my jacket! I really needed it, not for the walk, that was getting more than warm 😂

    At 7.50 we started to walk back down the hill.
    Really challenging for the leg muscles.
    Now we could see, how steep and long some parts of the track are 😳
    It was not just feeling bad, it is a really tough walk.
    We had to walk really carefully as the ground is really slippery in some parts and we saw some people falling down. Around halfway down one of the girls tripping over a rock and falling down. She twisted her ankle a bit and had to rest a few minutes to come down. Luckily it was not so bad and she could keep on walking down, we just were walking a little bit slower and more carefully from now.
    We reached the carpark at 10 am, so it took me in total 6 hours and 15 minutes, with two long breaks. Pretty good. 💪🏼

    I later found out the track starts at 280m above sea level and the peak is at 1580m above sea level. So I walked up 1300m 😱😱

    Swimming

    After finishing the Roys Peak I drove quickly into Wanaka to buy the stuff I forgot to buy yesterday and then went back to the campground for a calm rest of the day.
    I had a 2 hours nap, and around 2.30 pm I went for a swim in the lake, as it got so hot and I just wanted to cool down. It was really nice, a bit cold in the beginning but really nice when I was finally in the water.
    I thought it was time to use my underwater camera a little bit, so there is even a prove from me swimming in the lake 😉

    Day off

    This morning I woke up pretty late, nice to not need to stress to check out in time.
    The weather is not so good today, very cloudy and it even started to rain, when I was on my way to the kitchen to get breakfast. It was raining for a while but stopped before I went back to my car.

    There were coming a few more showers during the morning/ early lunchtime and it was really hard to say when it will rain and how much.
    I decided to wait and see how the weather will be in the afternoon.
    It actually got really nice in the early afternoon and as soon as the clouds were gone and the sun out it got really hot again.

    During lunchtime, I found out, that Rob Roy’s Glacier Track is unfortunately closed at the moment due to some problems at a part of the track.
    Because of that, I was deciding to take the day off and do nothing. There will be a lot on my list tomorrow so I could need the extra energy tomorrow!    Читать далее

    The Wanaka Tree at sunrise

    The alarm was waking me up at 5.15 am. I want to go for the sunrise to the Wanaka tree and see if I can get some nice pictures again!
    And at least this time it’s not so early and I have only a 10 minutes drive in front of me instead of 2-3 hours of walking. 😉

    The colors were this time not as good as two days ago, but I think I got anyway some nice pictures. 😊

    Around 6.40 am I drove back to the campground and was laying down for 30 minutes.
    But I had to get up at 7.30 to eat breakfast and get ready to leave in time for today's adventure, I am going to do a horse trek today 🤗
    After a fast breakfast, I packed all my stuff and left the campground at 8.50 am in good time!    Читать далее

    Backcountry Saddle Expeditions

    At 9.30 am I arrived at the Backcountry Saddle Experience in Cardrona.
    I found this tour on Bookme and my friends in Queenstown actually were also recommending this place.

    First I had to sign in and fill in a safety paper.
    While we were waiting for the last people to show up Pam, the owner, was deciding to get the first group already away.
    So she and Olivia started to give the first 7 of us, including me our horses.
    My horse I Cherona but everyone calls her Cheesy.
    As you maybe can see, they have Appaloosa horses here!
    Really cool colors and super chilled horses. They stand loose around the yard and no one is walking away! Really impressive.
    And what was very important for me, they all look really, really good! Big belly and a lot of muscles! 👍🏼😊

    When everyone in our group got their horse they started to but the bridles on, tide the belt and help the other people upon the horses. Looks like I was ending up in a beginner group 🙄😅
    3 total beginners, 2 with a little bit experience and on with good riding abilities.
    Well, I was not expecting too much, let’s see what will happen today.

    When everyone was ready and happy we got the order to stay behind each other and always in the same order as it is best like this for the horses.
    I was ending up as last behind two really slow horses with total beginners on them that had no idea what to do. 🙈😬
    Oh my god, I was thinking. But I decided that it doesn’t matter and I will enjoy the ride anyway.
    Pam told me, that Cheesy can be a little bitch and get grumpy when I use my legs too much, so I should pay a little bit attention to this and if she tries to bite me I should really tell her to stop it.
    Ok, at least my horse has an own mind, sounds interesting. Me and grumpy mares... 🙈😂

    Then it was time to leave the yard. We went with Olivia, while Pam was fixing the other group ready.
    We started to slowly walk up a hill. After the first gate, we were passing Olivia asked if everyone is feeling comfortable and as the answer was yes from everyone she said, perfect let’s trot a bit.
    That was a surprise for me! I was not expecting that we gonna trot as well so that was really nice!

    The horses are so calm and behaving so well, that it’s even for the total beginners absolutely no problem to handle them and trot around a little bit.
    I started to like the trip more and more as we were more and more often trotting some parts, where the track was really good.
    As we had to pass another gate, Olivia was going around and just checking everyone’s belt and tighten them up a little bit more, if needed. She asks the woman in front of me, the other good rider if she was feeling for a canter, but her answer was no.
    So I was like: I’d like to if it’s ok?
    The answer was: “of coarse!
    You are anyway the last one so that’s absolutely no problem, just wait by the gate while we trot over the field and I will wave at you when you can start to Galopp after us!”

    Oh yes, now I was really happy and super excited.
    Cheesy as well. She got also really excited when the other ones were trotting away from us, so she didn’t want to standstill.
    When Olivia waved at me, I just had to give Cheesy the head free and of we go!
    She is as happy as I am over this nice canter!
    She is not running like crazy after the other horses so we had a nice canter over the field until we were back with the group!

    And I even got the chance for one more 🤗😎
    The same system here, I was waiting until the other once for a bit away and then we took off again. 🤩🥰

    The next part was mostly up a hill on a small path so we had to walk for a while until we reached a small but steep hill, where everyone was allowed to take a short canter up the hill if they wanted to.
    We had to wait a while as a few people in front of us were walking up the hill anyway.
    Cheesy got too excited that she was turning a little bit too early around the corner so she had to jump over a little creek.
    Well, I got a jump as well 😉
    She also showed me her bitch faces a few times when she was thinking that I am telling her to often to keep up with the rest of the group, sometimes even before I was doing something, just like she was saying: “Don’t you dare to touch my belly with your heels!! “ 🤣🤣 Mares 🙈🤣
    Shortly after that, we reached the highest part of our track where Olivia was so nice to take some pictures from us. After that, we followed a path down the hill and got only to trot two more times for a short bit as this track is very uneven.
    We had to pass a few mud holes and even two creeks.
    On the first one, the horses got a chance to drink, what everyone also did!

    A little bit more than 2 hours after leaving the yard we were back.
    The horses got a food bag around their had and was all standing loose at the yard happy about some food 😊

    I was the last one to leave as I wanted to thank Olivia for the possibility to canter as well.
    She told me, that they always give the experienced riders the chance and that’s why I was riding at last so I could easily pull up and wait without disturbing the other horses.
    Very good system and so nice, that every rider gets a chance to really enjoy the trip in this kind of way!

    Lake Hawea

    After leaving Cardrona I went towards Lake Hawea the other big lake closed to Wanaka.

    I stopped at three different lookout places, first at the bottom of the lake, then half way and in the end at the top of the Lake Hawea as well.

    The weather is still really good and warm but there are coming more and more clouds over the mountains.
    I know I am driving towards bad weather, but if I am a little bit lucky, the worst part is not coming before Tuesday and there I will be at least at Hokitika and not around the part of Highway 6 that got washed away during the extreme rain at the beginning of December.

    I was watching the weather forecast already the last couple of days and was deciding to rush it over to the west coast and towards Hokitika to be able to do this part of the trip, because I think they will close the road on Tuesday or maybe Wednesday because it should rain like hell.
    At least I can do this part of the trip like this, otherwise, I would need to go another way.    Читать далее

    Blue Pools

    The next stop on my to-do list was at the Blue Pools.

    It’s a short walk from the carpark there. They are not as blue as they can be, but it was raining in this area in the morning and obviously also shortly before I came here as the road was still wet.
    The more it’s raining the less blue the pools are.
