  • Rottnest Island IV

    21 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Somehow I missed the road towards Salmon Bay.

I figured that out around 20-25 minutes later. So I had to turn around a drive back all the way. I was already pretty tired then and was actually walking and pushing the bike up some bigger hills 😅😬

The only positive thing was, that I saw a lot of Quokkas under some trees!
The small once were very interested in us and came really close, two of them was even smelling on my hands and arms 😍🤗

At 2.30 pm I finally arrived at Salmon Bay.
Kara was feeling much better after a nap and some rest, so we had our lunch together and I showed her the pictures from the west end and the Quokkas I have met.

After that, we went for a snorkel round.
The water was colder than expected. 🙈😬
It’s so hot outside but the water is still fresh, it was nice though when you finally get into the water.

We saw a few different fishes but I went out quite soon again, as I started to feel cold and I don't want to risk anything. I have just been sick.
Kara has a wetsuit so she took over my underwater camera and kept on snorkeling for a while, pictures will follow later.

Around 3.50 am we left Salmon Bay to drive back to the settlement without stress and enough time for many Quokka Stops on the way.

And we saw a few. The first two were very shy so we didn’t push it and left them to their own.
The next one we saw was super interested in us and especially in our water bottles so we gave him some water to drink!

That was also our last stop before we reached the village. We saw a few more Quokkas but didn’t stop anymore.
Back in the village we returned the bikes and went to the bakery, unfortunately, it was already closed.
I bought some ice cream, I think we deserve it today.
We watched the Quokkas that were around in the village during our break. They are not super active but more active than the once we saw around the island. It’s actually not so normal that you can see them during the day, they are normally nocturnal animals but have changed that here on the island.
The Quokkas we saw were mostly sleepy or even asleep. We didn’t motivate them to move around for a better picture or so as other people do.
We took the pictures we could get while interfering with them as little as possible.

Around 5 pm we went to the harbor and waited for our boat to arrive. We are super tired and especially I am having really much pain in my ass 🙈😂

5.45 pm we left the island and at 6.20 we arrived in Fremantle.

We walked to the Fremantle Markets, only a 10 min walk away and took a look around all the stuff you can buy there. We bought some vegetables and I got some fudges as well.
We went to the next bus station and back to the campground.
Today we made “Bratkartoffeln” for dinner 🤗
Around 9.30 we went to bed totally exhausted from the day, but more than satisfied with it as well! 😊

  • Yanchep National Park

    22 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Calm morning for us, we were up around 8 am.
It was raining a little bit during the night and still this morning, but really just a little bit. You can not call it rain to be honest.

We had our breakfast and got the tip to visit the Yanchep National Park as you can see Koalas here.
Koalas are not living on the west coast of Australia so this National Park has some of them in an extra area for them. As Kara is not going to travel the east coast and it will probably be her only chance to see them, we went there after breakfast, with a short stop in town.
We arrived there after 11 am and first we fixed our 14 days pass for the National Parks here. You need to pay entry to the Parks, it’s only 15$ per car but a 14 days pass costs only 40$ and we can go to as many National Parks as we want during these 14 days.

After that, we walked to the Koalas and saw a few of them relaxing in the trees 🥰
Not so much going on here as they are nocturnal animals and mostly sleeping during the day.
We then went for a walk around the park, we saw a lot of cockatoos and parrots but all pretty far away and hard to catch on a picture.
And we saw a few kangaroos right beside us!
We probably have missed them if two of them weren’t standing up while we were passing them! So it was a really nice wk for us here!
Still super cloudy but at least not raining anymore.

  • Lancelin Beach and Sand dunes

    22 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Next, we went to Lancelin Beach for a small stop and then even passed the Sand dunes. We didn’t go for a ride down the dunes as the board hire here is very expensive and we just didn’t feel for spending a lot of money to get sand everywhere 😉

So we went back into town to find a nice spot at a beach for our lunch break instead.

  • Pinnacles Desert and Nambung Station

    22 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

On our way, we passed the Pinnacles Dessert and of course, we had to stop here. It’s only a short drive away from the main road and a short walk from the carpark to the pinnacles.
It’s super many flies here and I really mean super many 😱😱
Super annoying as they love to fly into your face all the time. So we had to keep on moving to get at least a little bit away from them.

But otherwise, it’s such a beautiful place here! So cool to see all these pinnacles in the middle of a National Park!

After that, it was time to drive to our campground for tonight.
It’s really in the middle of nowhere. We drove over a long gravel road without seeing a single car!

But we saw kangaroos, lizards, and Carnabys cockatoos, a really endangered species and here are so many of them, everywhere! So amazing!

Our campground is on a farm and super quiet and lovely. Just a handful more people here and we had a really nice evening except for the horrible flies...

  • Jurien Bay

    23 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We woke up around 7 am and saw a couple of Emus on a field beside the campground.
Nice to wake up and see some wildlife! 😊

We had breakfast and left the campground around 9 am. We didn't see any kangaroos on the way back to civilization but some lizards and cockatoo.

Our first stop for today was a Jurien Bay.
The beautiful little town with a beautiful beach and also a snorkeling trail, but this one should not be so good jet as they just installed it a few years ago and it's not so much to see jet.

So we decided against a snorkling trip here and stopped at a food stall on the way out of town instead.
Here we got 4 small Avocados, 3 sweetcorn, 4 pears and 4 nectarines for only 5,50$!

We couldn't really believe that we had to pay so less for all the vegetables and fruits! Pretty cool.

  • Dynamite Bay, Natures Window, LeemanLake

    23 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Our next stop was at Dynamite Bay, a nice little bay but we only stopped for a few minutes here and kept on driving to another beach where we found a natural window.

Also here we only stopped for a few minutes and then we went to Leeman where we stopped at Leeman Lake.
This lake is dried out very much and it has a little bit of pink color. Cool to see, but hopefully, we gonna see some more pink lakes during our trip to Exmouth.

  • Port Denison, Leaning Tree and Horrocks

    23 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

For lunch, we stopped in Port Denison. We found a nice beach again and had a nice lunch break here.

After around 1 hour we left Port Denison to drive towards Horrocks where we will stay overnight.
On the way, we found some fascinating trees, the so-called “Leaning Trees”.
You can see a lot of them in this area, most of them are smaller but this one in the picture is a really big one!
Amazing to see, that the trees are still alive and growing!

Shortly before 6 pm, we arrived in Horrocks. Small little town beside the ocean.

We prepared lunch straight away after building up our tents as we were pretty hungry. Today we eat pasta with eggs and cheese 😋😊

  • Pink Lake in Gregory

    24 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we took it easy in the morning. So we were leaving the campground shortly before 10 am.
Our first stop for today was at the Pink Lake, the Hutt Lagoon.

This one is really pink. You can’t see it so well in the pictures, but this lake is pink!

It’s an Alge that causes the color of the lake and it’s used for food coloring and makeups!

  • Grandstand and Island Rock

    24 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After passing the pink lake we went to the coast and followed the coastline.

At first, we stopped and Grandstand and didn't know what to expect but not this!
It's such an amazing coastline here with all the cliffs in different rent colors.
    Just wow! 🤩😍

After a short drive, we came to Island Rock, another scenic point on the coastline. The name comes from the Island Rock offshore.

    Pretty cool!
Here it's still 30 degrees but with a nice sea breeze, it's not feeling so hot!

We kept on stopping at all possible places!
The first two pictures are from Castle Cove, a view from the other side on Island Rock.

The third picture is from the Natural Bridge.
And the last pictures from Eagle Gorge.

This landscape here is so cool and so different from the beautiful beaches we have seen so far on the coastline!

  • Pot Alley and Red Bluff

    24 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Our last two sightseeing stops for today we're at Pot Alley ( first four pictures) and Red Bluff Lookout (last two pictures).

At Pot Alley, we could finally take a walk along the cliffs and take a closer look at all the layers in the cliffs. That was really cool to see it! Some layers are really hard, some are sandy.

The walk to Red Bluff was the longest walk for us today and still a short one.
Nice view over to the town Kalbarri and the Indian Ocean.

  • Blue Pools and Kalbarri

    24 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Around 2 pm we arrived at the Blue Pools so we had our lunch break here on a table in the shade.

After that, we got some good tips from a local where it's best to snorkel in the blue pools.
So we picked up our stuff, got changed and walked down the beach for like 200m to come to the „good“ blue pools.

The tip was well worth it!
We saw so many fishes, all different colors and sizes! So cool!
The water was also surprisingly warm so even I could stay in for quite some time! Pictures come in an extra footprint!

After our snorkeling trip, we were laying down for a short time at the beach to dry up a little bit.
After that, we went into Kalbarri to look for a cap for Kara what took us some time and them we checked in to the campground.

Well, what shall I say, we again found a really nice spot with a lot of pink cockatoo's and kangaroos around us all evening. And we found out that we go quite a bit sunburned today 😬 Not from laying on the beach, must be from our sightseeing tour as we have some clear marks from our t-shirts. 🙈😅
After building up our tents and a nice shower we walked into town because we really want to get some fish and chips but unfortunately the fish and chips shop in town was closed today. 😕
So we walked back and cooked instead, download a lot of pictures from our cameras and shared them with each other.
All in all took some time so we went to bed pretty late today, around 10.20 pm.

  • Feeding Pelicans

    25 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we got up early because we have much on our to-do list and a hot day ahead of us.
But nothing gonna stop us from having a good breakfast! 😉
After breakfast, we packed all together and we're leaving the campground at 8 am. First, we went shopping and after that, we went to the pelican feeding area.
Locals feed some pelicans here every day. Before it was the local fishermen that were giving the leftovers to the pelicans, now some locals keep on doing it to give other people the change to see them up close and learn something about them.
The whole thing takes only around 20-30 minutes and both Kara and I got the chance to feed them as well.
Nice experience and it's really not much fish they get so they still need to go out to the ocean every day to catch their own fish!

  • Kalbarri National Park Natural Window

    25 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Before we left Kalbarri we fueled up, just do be sure we have enough fuel as we gonna pass for some kilometers through nothing now!
The next town is almost 400 km away!
So we are carrying plenty of food and water as well!

Our first stop within the Kalbarri National Park was at a lookout where you have a nice view over to the ocean!
We only stopped for a picture here and then went to the famous Natural Window!
This is a really beautiful place!
If you forget about the flies... Good that I have a flynet now for the head! Otherwise, I would get crazy here!
They are flying into your nose, ears, eyes, and mouth if possible... Horrible!!!

This part of the National Park is a Gorge, the river here don’t have so much water left in it.
But I just love this area!
Well, I miss the trees.. there are mostly bushes here, just a few smaller trees here and there. So the is no shade anyway and the sun is burning down hot like hell! It's not even 10.30 am and already 30 degrees here! 🥵

  • Z Bend

The next stop on our list was the Z Bend.
Another part of the gorge and the river.
Just a short walk away from the carpark to the lookout area but in this heat, it's not as easy as you would think. And the flies ... 😬
I live my flynet! Don't care how stupid it looks, 70-80% of the people have them and the rest is using other stuff to protect themselves from the flies. So it's not, that I am super sensitive or so! They are horrible!

We arrived here around 11.30 pm and it's just getting hotter and hotter, 32 degrees now!
Luckily it's only a short walk to each lookout point!
Here the river has more water in it!
Otherwise, it's a really remote area but so beautiful!

  • Road to Hamelin

    25 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

After our last stop, we started to drive all the way through the Kalbarri National Park to get to Freeway 1.

It's getting even hotter, the longer we drove the hotter it got. When we stopped for lunch in Billabong in the middle of nowhere just a roadhouse, gas station and campground, it was 38 degrees! 🥵
Luckily we found a place in the shadow because we can't sit outside in the sun!
After lunch we kept on driving on this horrible straight road, it's really just going straight for like 150km or so?! Crazy!

Around 4 o'clock we reached Hamelin Bay Caravan Park where we will stay for one night.
Kara was, unfortunately, feeling pretty bad when we arrived so she was laying down in the shade straight away.
I gave her some company for a while and then started to build up our tents, took a shower and started to cook. It took her a long time to feel better but around 8 pm she was standing up again and joined me a little while for dinner though she didn't want to eat anything.
So we went to bed early today, just hard when some people can't keep it to a normal noise level... 😕

  • Stromatolites and Shell Beach

    26 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Around 3 o’clock at night I woke up from the rain.
And it was raining for a while. Or not all the time but quite many showers, even a thunderstorm in between. But my tent was holding!! I am impressed I must say, well worth the 12 $ I was paying for it! 👍🏼😉

But anyway I couldn't fall asleep anymore so I was a bit tired in the morning. After breakfast I was feeling better and fresher again so we left the campground shortly past 9 am ready for new adventures.
The first stop ist just about 1km away, a short walk to the Stromatolites.
These are growing bacteria colony’s in the ocean that form kind of rocks together. It’s hard to explain. You may wanna google it!

After that, we drove to Shell Beach. The whole beach is full of shells, or the shells are the beach! Here is no sand anywhere!

The water of the ocean here is double as salty as the normal ocean due to high evaporation.

  • Road to Monkey Mia

    26 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

For lunch we stopped at the Little Lagoon, a beautiful lake closed to the ocean. We found a shelters picknick area here and had our 1 hour lunchbreak.

After lunch we drove to Monkey Mia where we planned to stay over night. But when we found out, that you have to pay 15$ per person plus campground fees for staying here, we were deciding against it! The campground is already pretty expensive and then 30$ extra on top?! No way!
Might be nice here but we have seen already so many beautiful beaches around, for free, that we don’t need to stay here!

So we went to Denham, the next town to fuel up and we saw a lot of emus walking around on the roads, also in the middle of the town!! 😳
And they don’t move away for cars, they absolutely don’t care if there is a car coming or not.
So I had to break hard a few times to not drive over them! 😬😅

On the way back to Hamelin Pool, where we gonna stay one more night now, we stopped at a bay where you with a little bit luck can see sharks up close. We had no luck but the bay and beach was anyway nice for a small stop.

Back at the campground we fixed our laundry and had nice swim in the pool, or not just a swim 🙈😂
We were alone and had a lot of fun I can say 😉😂

During the day we had up to 34 degrees but on the way to Hamelin Pool it got hotter and hotter, up to 40 degrees 😳🥵

After a nice shower we cooked dinner and went to bed early, tired from the heat.

  • Eagle Bluff

    26 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Our next stop was at Eagle Bluff. Here you have an awesome view over Sharks Bay and yes, we saw some sharks! And they were pretty big! Hard to take a picture from them when they are so far away. It’s a nice walk here you can do and it takes just a few minutes. And we saw a snake, a dangerous snake!! 😱😱
The locals who showed us the snake said it is very poisoned and very aggressive, so we stayed far away from it! And the snake was not even big, pretty small to be honest.

So we waited until the snake decided to move on!

Unfortunately, we were never catching the name of the snake so we are not really sure, what for a snake we saw!

After breakfast, we left the campground around 9 am. It was already 30 degrees then 😳🥵

We drove to Gladstone Bay and stopped on a lookout point shortly before at first.
From the lookout, we had a nice view of nothing. It’s really nothing out here, not even many plants anymore!
It’s crazy how much the landscape has been changing in the last couple of days! 😳
The higher we get the less vegetation we see.

In Gladstone Bay, we tried to see some Dugongs that are supposed to be here but we had no luck. We will try again somewhere else but we know it’s hard to find them.

  • Blowholes and Quobba Station

    27 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After our stop in Gladstone Bay, we went to Carnarvon for stocking up. We found a place to fill up our water bottles and bought some food as well. Then we went for a lunch break to a nice picnic area closed to the ocean.
After lunch, we left Carnarvon and went to Point Quobba and the blowholes there.
This time we were lucky and the blowholes we're blowing. Not very often, but we got to see some nice blows. It's a super rough coastline here and you can see the power of the ocean clearly.
Pretty cool place to stop and just watch for a while. Everywhere around us are small salt pits on the rocks!
Small holes that were once filled with seawater and now it's only salt left! Pretty cool to see, they look like ice, but with still over 30 degrees it's to warm for ice here 😉😂

After that we took the bumpy drive to Quobba Station where we will stay for tonight. It's really in the middle of nowhere but a really nice place with super friendly owners and their dog!

It was hard to find a place to put up our tents that was sheltered from the wind. It's blowing like hell now and it was not easy to build up our tents and get them stable enough to hopefully survive the night.

After that, we started to cook and eat. After a hot shower, we went to bed early as we were very tired after a long day.

  • Coral Bay

    28 februari 2020, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we went to Coral Bay.
We left Quobba Station around 9.15 am by around 28 degrees. So it's almost cold today 😉😂
It's still pretty windy but around 4-5 am it got at least better. So it's not so bad anymore.

We only stopped to fuel up on the way. Nothing more to do or see on the way to Coral Bay as here is simply nothing!
The vegetation is changing a little bit, but not too much. Just sometimes a bit more bushes and ”grass” and sometimes less.
We saw some wild goats beside the road but otherwise no other wildlife.
Around 12.30 pm we arrived in Coral Bay and went straight to the beach for our lunch break!
It's really beautiful here, but in the town is not so much more than a huge caravan park 🙈😂

After lunch, we went to get sine ice cream and with it some wifi to check out snorkel tours here in Coral Bay and Exmouth.
We decided for a nice full-day tour in Exmouth and was thinking to do a have day tour here tomorrow morning.

First, we booked the tour in Exmouth and then we walked around from office to office to find a half-day tour for tomorrow what was impossible. It's still off-season and they don't operate so many tours jet. So we are not going to do a tour here.
After that we meat with a couple from Canada whom I am going to pick up on my way back to Perth here. Kara is flying already on 06.03. we decided together that it's better, she is flying from Exmouth to Perth on the 05.03. so we can travel up calm and easy and I gonna drive back down then within 2-3 days.
And with Facebook's help, I found this couple to talk with down and can share the fuel costs with them.
And I must say, we were coming along really good. We were sitting for around one hour talking about life, traveling and all. So I have a really good feeling about them and Kara as well!

After that, it was time for us to go and snorkel.
And we saw sooooo many different fishes!! 😍
We must have been out for like an hour or even longer. It was really cool! Pictures come in an extra footprint.

Afterward, we went to the campground. First, we showered, then we were building up our tents and a last it was time to cook dinner.

After that, we watched a movie together in my tent before we got too tired again.
