• To Calvi

    10. juni 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We met up at the Marseille airport with Hilary Sharp (the leader of our group) and two other ladies (Barb from Toronto and Simone who is a neighbour of Hilary's in France). We flew to Calvi in Corsica and got taxis to our hotel. It was pretty early so we left the bags there and wandered around town for the morning. The city has a nice harbour and is surrounded by very high mountains of granite. We could see snow on one mountain. It was hot today, around 28 or so. We had lunch down by the water and then went back to our room and got our swimming stuff on. We walked down to this small beach with coarse sand and rocks just near our hotel and went in the ocean. It is quite warm on the surface. We sat by the pool after that and then wandered into town for a drink. We are meeting up with the group tonight over dinner. Charlie Shulz isn't able to be here as he has bad flu so Bob is the only guy on the trip.Læs mere

  • Flight to Marseille

    9. juni 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Nous arrivons en France. We hung out at Heathrow for a couple of hours and then caught our flight to Marseille. There was a heavy presence of police with automatic weapons at Heathrow due to the recent terrorist attacks in the UK. We had to go through security just to get into the building and there were six police there. The weather here in Marseille is much warmer - around 28. We are staying at the Best Western out at the airport. It's about a 20 minute taxi ride into town, so we decided to stay here. We had a nice dinner with wine and are now back in our room.Læs mere

  • Padstow to London

    8. juni 2017, England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We caught the bus from Padstow to Bodmin Parkway rail station. We left early as the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Show started today and it the largest annual event in the U.K. Over 125,000 people, 500 cattle, 180 pigs, 1400 horses and 1500 sheep are competing this year. The roads were pretty jammed up getting into the site. As well, the British general election is on today. So, we got to the train station early and waited for our train and then travelled to Paddington Station in London. We are at the Indigo Hotel, where we stayed when we arrived here May 27th. We changed and then took the tube to Liverpool Street and there we met up with Stanny and David who took the train in. Stanny was in Whitehorse with Michael visiting us last August and we haven't seen David for at least 10 years. We went for a nice dinner and drinks and caught up on news. After dinner, Stanny and David caught the train back home and we took the tube back to Paddington. We had one drink at the Sussex Arms and watched a rugby game on TV. We are now back in our room getting ready to fly to Marseille tomorrow.Læs mere

  • Port Isaac to Padstow

    7. juni 2017, England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Today we set out from Port Isaac with a really nice day. A little cool but sunny and not much wind. It was around 20 km total distance. The path had lots of ups and downs for the first two hours until we reached Port Quinn. After that it was less steep and mostly crossed rolling grassland above the cliffs and often beside rock walls made of slate. The wind started to come up later in the afternoon, but nothing as bad as yesterday. For the last few kilometres we crossed two beaches and the path crossed over sand dunes behind the beaches. With about a half hour to go before reaching the ferry at Rock, which connects to Padstow across the Camel estuary, the rain started to fall. When we finally arrived at the ferry we were pretty wet. It was £2 each to cross. When we got across the water to the Padstow ferry launch, we found a pub and went in to get drinks and dry a bit. After that we walked to the Tor View guest house, which is about a ten minute walk from downtown up a hill. It's not as well located as other places we've stayed, as the Royal Cornwall Show is on and everything was booked up months ago. It's a nice place though. We walked back into town and had dinner at the Lion pub. It's been lightly raining since we arrived. Tonight we are trying to dry things out with limited hanging space. We have to pack up to catch our bus and train back to London tomorrow. The bus goes at 8:30 am. The South West Coastal path walk is over - at least for now.Læs mere

  • Tintagel to Port Isaac

    6. juni 2017, England ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

We left Tintagel, after stopping to get Cornish pasties for lunch at the pasty shop, and hiked to Port Isaac today. The distance was around 16 km. We passed through Trebarwith Strand and then the trail got a little harder. There were several signs of slate mines, and the shoreline is lined with slabs of slate rock. There were fences and steps made of slate as well. There were a few big valley descents and then ascents, but what made it especially hard was the wind. The big low pressure system that crossed Britain is finally leaving. We didn't have any rain today but the wind was gale force on the cliff tops and hard to walk against where it funnelled up from below. Gusts would cause you to walk like a drunken sailor. Luckily it was mostly at our backs and away from the cliff edges, so we weren't worried about getting blown over a cliff. We are staying tonight at the Old Schoolhouse hotel in Port Isaac. There was filming going on for the Doc Martin show when we arrived. In the show this town is called Portwenn, so there were a few fake Portwenn signs for the sets. We saw two of the show actors and there were a lot of film and lighting trucks in town. We had a fish and chips dinner at the hotel and went for a short walk afterwards. It's cool and windy out tonight and there are people walking around in down jackets.Læs mere

  • Crackington Haven to Tintagel

    5. juni 2017, England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Well we made it to King Arthur's Castle. This was a 21 km distance. We started out this morning from Crackington Haven in a light rain with some wind. When we got up to the cliff tops though it was gale force and at in some places hard to walk against. And then as the day went on the rain got worse so that by the end of the day it was driving into you along with the wind. We didn't see many people on the Coastal Path other than a few local walkers. We did have a nice stop at Boscastle after 4 hours and had a Cornish cream tea at the Harbourlight cafe. We had to leave our packs and poles outside the cafe as it was crowded with people on vacation trying to get out of the rain. The Coastal path was running water by the end of the day and slippery, so we moved pretty slowly and carefully. We are staying in a nice guest house in Tintagel called the Pendryn, and thinking about going outside to find a place to eat.
Later: We just got back from dinner at the King Arthur Arms. It's only a five minute walk away. We had cottage pie and wines. We spotted a chance to go back to the when the rain stopped and so didn't get too wet. We have wet clothes hanging all over the room.

  • Bude to Crackington Haven

    4. juni 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We left Bude after a nice English breakfast. The proprietors of Surf Haven, Peter and Caroline, saw us off at the front door. It was raining and windy when we left so we had our waterproofs on, but we quickly shed them at the first hill as the sun came out. Apart from one short squall it was nice weather most of the day. We stopped at Widemouth Bay for an early lunch. We had scones with clotted cream and jam. A really healthy choice but we don't ever get that at home. The hike today was around 17 km. For the rest of the way after lunch it was quite up and down. Some if the ascents and descents were pretty steep, but it was dry. Along the way we saw a lot of dramatic geology, with folded-over sedimentary layers. We saw horses and Val took some pictures of them. We finally arrived at Crackington Haven, which is tucked in a narrow cove. We ordered drinks and then checked into the hotel. After dinner we walked on the beach. It is cool and windy. Today is our 29th anniversary.Læs mere

  • Hartland Quay to Bude

    3. juni 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Today was the longest day of our trip at around 24 km and lots of up and down. The day started out windy and with spitting rain but eventually the sun came out and it was a beautiful fresh ocean kind of weather. We saw a few people along the path but for a supposed crowded holiday Saturday it was really pretty deserted. People seem to join the path from various access points and then leave it further along. There were quite a few valleys to descend and then to ascend on the other side. The path stayed very close to the cliffs and you had to watch for erosion. There really wasn't anywhere to get a tea or anything along the whole path today. We had to do one detour into the Village of Morwenstow as a section of the path was closed due to cliff erosion. We met a nice fellow and his Beagle out for a walk from the Village who walked with us a bit. There was a pub there but we didn't stay as we wanted to get to Bude before dinner hour. The cliffs are not so high as we approached Bude and the trail traversed grasslands with sheep grazing. We finally arrived at Bude around 5:30 and are staying at the Surf Haven B&B. Peter is the proprietor and it's a very nice place. We're going to try to get into a pub for drinks and dinner. A very nice day with beautiful ocean and cliff views.Læs mere

  • Covelly to Hartland Quay

    2. juni 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We left Covelly after a nice breakfast. We climbed up the steep street and entered the forest. Much of the first four hours were along the edge of the forest or along cleared farmland with cliffs on the right side down to the ocean. It was wet and foggy. The fog would come and go but at least it was warm and not windy. It rained a bit as well but mostly a misty wet drizzle. Once we got to Hartland Point the trail turned south and the skies started to clear a bit. We stopped at a tea house and had a nice snack and tea. We were covered with grass seed from the wet trail. Past this point the cliffs got quite spectacular and the skies cleared. There was a lot of up and down hiking, but we got into the Hartland Quay hotel around 4 pm and headed straight to the pub for drinks. Our room here is nice and faces the setting sun. Dinner was good but pretty slow in coming. But we had lots of time. This hotel is over 200 years old and hallways are very narrow.Læs mere

  • Westward Ho! to Clovelly

    1. juni 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We hiked this stretch of 18 km at a petty slow pace. It was warm and the sun was out for much of the day. We had our lunches down by the ocean at Buck's mills near an old lime kiln. Much of the first half was up and down with the path grown in so that our legs got scratched by grass and brambles. There may have been some stinging nettles in there too. The second half was more level and followed a 19th century carriage-way called the Hobby Drive. Clovelly is basically a row of white buildings on either side of a narrow steep lane cobbled with little round stones standing on edge. The street is very steep. Supplies are sledded down the street on sledges by people. There are also donkeys here, but they seem to be just used for rides for tourists. There are no cars here in town. Our suitcases made it to the hotel by the sled method! We're now pitched in a nice room across from the New Inn and restaurant. We had drinks when we arrived because we were hot and tired. Just came back from dinner - food was good. Having coffee in our room - we're getting used to Nescafé instant decaf 😀Læs mere

  • Westward Ho!

    31. maj 2017, England ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

We took a couple of trains and a bus to get here today. It's a seaside town named after a 19h century novel by Kingsley. It's also the home of Tarka the Otter from a book by Williamson. It's also the only town with an exclamation mark in its name. We are in a nice old guest house called the Village Inn, but it may be a bit noisy as the pub is just below. There are beautiful rose bushes and other flowers around the property. The ocean is calm and the weather looks a bit better with some blue sky around. It's a fairly unattractive resort town just outside of Bideford with a mix of nice old and really unattractive new buildings. We had dinner at the Village Inn and then packed up for tomorrow.Læs mere

  • Day in Penryn and Falmouth

    30. maj 2017, England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today we had an easy start to the day - slept in, had breakfast and wandered down to Viv's place. Lesley came over from St. Agnes and we all had a nice visit, followed by a lovely lunch at The Shed in Falmouth. We did some more wandering around in Falmouth (Viv and Lesley went back to Viv's place). Our big purchase of the day was a new red collar for Sammy! After a rest back at our room, we met up with Viv and Lesley again and we all headed over to Mylor Bridge to the Lemon Hill pub where we had more great beer and cider and great pub dinners. After saying goodbye 🙁 to Viv and Lesley we returned to our room to pack up and get ready for the next stage of our journey, which starts tomorrow - on to Westward Ho! and the start of the hiking on the SW Coastal Path.Læs mere

  • Visit with Cousin Vivian

    29. maj 2017, England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We had a nice English breakfast at the Thirsty Scholar pub. We then walked down to visit cousin Vivian. She is now living in Penryn and has a nice place alongside a tidal estuary. There was a pair of swans with 8 goslings that we watched. After a visit we had lunch at the Muddy Beach cafe and then walked 30 minutes into Falmouth. There are Vote Labour posters all around as the general election is coming up soon. We shopped a bit in Falmouth ; some of the stores we have been to before and we very much like, including "Bow", "New Look" and "Trego". A cruise ship was in port and there were quite a few tourists walking Market Street. The sun came out for a bit and it was actually warm. We walked back to Penryn and met Vivian for dinner at the Thirsty Scholar. We had fish and chips which were great and Vivian had pizza. We are in our room now and getting organized for another Falmouth day tomorrow.Læs mere

  • Cancelled Trains and Penryn

    28. maj 2017, England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We had tickets for the 8:50 am train to Penzance from Paddington. They announced it was cancelled as the crew didn't show up. So we were told to take the 10:50 train. It was cancelled too for the same reason. So we waited for the 11:50 train. It did go on time but the carriages were crammed with bags and people. We got to Penryn around 5:20. Our guest house (Number 50 Town House) is really nice. We went down to the Thirsty Scholar pub for drinks and food. Patrons can bring dogs into the pub. There were some nice dogs hanging out there. We also met two older Canadian travellers who are staying in our guest house and are driving around. They were at Lands End to day and said it was wet and windy. After that we walked around town a bit for some exercise which was hard after a few drinks.Læs mere

  • Arrival in London

    27. maj 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We arrived in London around noon. We ran into Anne Labelle, previously with the Minto Mine, in the customs lineup. She's traveling to Portugal for a holiday and was wearing a straw hat. We took the Heathrow express to Paddington and bought our future rail tickets at the ticket centre there. Our hotel (Hotel Indigo) is a boutique hotel on London Street near the station. The room is nice. We went for drinks at the Sussex Arms and watched the Scottish Cup football final there. Then we went for dinner beside our hotel. Afterwards we walked through Hyde Park. We"re both pretty tired (didn't sleep much at all on the plane). The weather here is great - broken cloud, lots of sun and a cooling breeze. The hotel has air conditioning, so we'll sleep well tonight!Læs mere
