  • The Girls Have Arrived

    July 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today was an exploring San Francisco day. Kristen, Robert and I took the ferry into the city and walked the wharf area to pier 39 where we caught a bus tour around the city. We were lucky to get a really good tour guide. Meghan took the train from the airport and met us at the civic center and then joined us for the rest of the tour. We had a good time walking around Fisherman's wharf and the pier. The sea lions off from pier 39 were great entertainment. We had a nice dinner on the pier before catching the ferry back to the campground. Robert and I are so glad to have the girls with us. We feel so fortunate that they were able to coordinate their schedules to spend the week with us.Read more

  • Sonoma Square....Wine Country

    July 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Connecting with family and close friends has been very special to us on this trip. Today Patrick Paul, who lives in southern California, met us at the Marin campground and spent the day with us. He recommended a visit to Sonoma Square which was a great choice and not one we would have necessarily done on our own. Parking was easy, lunch was delicious and the wine tasting was lots of fun. Laughing, reminiscing, and enjoying the beautiful area with Patrick, Meghan and Kristen made this day especially memorable. Thank you so much Patrick.Read more

  • California Redwoods

    July 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Experiencing the massive size of California's Redwood trees was the focus of today. After leaving a small campground that was actually a part of a fairground, we traveled along the Avenue of the Giants. The trees were huge and all were along the roadside. We stopped at the typical tourist spots...Finding Bigfoot and the drive through tree in Muir's woods, but we also took a break at the Humbolt State Forest Park to take a walk through the Redwood Park. Standing next to the trees made us feel very small. Our next stop was northern California at Cresent Beach where we all put our feet in the Pacific Ocean to complete the trip across the country. For the record, the water of the Pacific was freezing!Read more

  • Crescent City

    July 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We spent last night at a campground in Cresent City which is a fishing town in northern California. The majority of the people were fisherman who stayed there because we were right on the harbor. We walked the beach in the early morning and found lots of sand dollars. Our travel today was to Diamond Lake in Oregon which is the closest RV park to Crater Lake. It's a beautiful area though much cooler than the southwest.Read more

  • Crater Lake National Park (Oregon)

    July 25, 2017, Annie Spring ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Crater Lake in Oregon has is the bluest lake we've ever seen. It also still has snow! We stopped at a pull off, that had a lot of people, to see what everyone was looking at. It was the first view of the lake and it took our breath away. As I understand it, the lake was formed by a volcano that basically erupted and sank creating the lake. We viewed the lake from several of the pull offs along Rim Drive, visited the gift shop and then planned to do a 2 mile hike down to the lake so we could take a boat tour. Unfortunately the boat was broken down and then it started to thunder and lightening. After several games of cribbage to try to wait out the storm, we decided to postpone our hike and headed back to the campground at Diamond Lake. The rain subsided and we were able to have a great cookout over the open fire complete with smores......just like old times.Read more

  • The Waterfalls (Oregon)

    July 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Despite waking up to rain, we decided to still hike down to Crater Lake. It turned out to be a good decision as it wasn't raining there, was cool and the hike was well worth it. On the way out, we walked with a man who was the captain of one of the tour boats and he had lots of history and stories about the lake. After our hike we explored route 138 which has 6 natural waterfalls. We hiked to and thoroughly enjoyed 3 of them...more of nature's beauty. Robert and Kristen went swimming in the pool formed at the Susan Falls. Our day came to an end at a campground outside of Eugene, Oregon so that we'd be close to the airport tomorrow when the girls fly back to their respective homes. Our time with them has gone by way too quickly.Read more

  • Good Bye Oregon....onto Idaho

    July 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We said good bye to Meghan and Kristen today at the Eugene, Oregon airport. We're so glad they were able to spend time traveling with us. Though we played games, had a campfire, and ate smores like we did on family camping trips when they were younger, we were traveling with young adults who had settled into productive lives of their own on this trip. We couldn't be prouder. The remainder of the day was a travel day. Our route is now east bound with our first destination being Sun Valley, Idaho to see our friends Jenn, Brian, Wyatt and Dakota Barth. This section of the country again provided a varied landscape. We went from the tall pines that formed a canopy across the road to a desert like fields through the Great Basin. We even came upon fields of onions in Vale, Oregon the onion capital of the country.Read more

  • The Barths (Hailey, Idaho)

    July 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Today we arrived in Hailey, Idaho to visit our friends The Barths. The drive here was another pretty one through a mountain dessert type terrain. We had a great tour of Sun Valley by Brian. What a beautiful resort he works at. Can't wait for tomorrow to see more of this beautiful area.Read more

  • Sun Valley with the Barths

    July 29, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Jenn and Brian showed us more of Sun Valley's resort today. We took the gondola and then the chair lift to the top of Bald Mt where the views were once again out of this world. Sun Valley has done a great job of preserving their history through photographs hanging throughout every building showing the resort has it has evolved over the years along with the well know people who have visited and continue to visit . We had a great lunch at the country club then that evening while Jenn and Brian worked the event, Wyatt joined us for a spectacular dinner buffet at the Village's main hotel followed by an Ice Show on their outdoor ice rink. The talent was overwhelming with the main performer being Nathan Chen who is our gold medal Olympian hopeful for this winter's 2018 Olympics. What a fun day!Read more

  • Crater Moon (Idaho)

    July 30, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 29 °C

Though we could have stayed longer with the Barths to continue to participate in all that it offers, we decided we needed to continue on our journey. Upon Jenn's recommendation we stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho. This was very different from anything we had experienced. It was the strangest landscape made up of black lava that erupted thousands of years ago. Lava tubes resulted and when they collapsed, tunnels were revealed. We did a guided tour of the Indian cave with a park ranger. Very cool. Next we traveled outside of Jackson, Wyoming where we'll spend the next few days.Read more

  • Jackson Hole, Wyoming

    July 31, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Though somewhat crowded with people, we enjoyed walking around and exploring Jackson, Wyoming which was a western version of Sonoma square that we visited in California. The well known Million Dollar Cowboy Bar had horse saddles at the bar, nice for a photo but not really the most comfortable seat. Their shops had neat photo opportunities all with a true western theme. Next we drove through the Grand Teton National Park with it's majestic peaks of the Rockies. We didn't see a lot of wildlife here, but Robert would love to be here in the fall to see the Elk migration which has elk coming down from the highlands by the hundreds. The road through the park led us straight to the south entrance of Yellowstone. Here we did begin to see wildlife...especially the deer that run in front of us while I was driving causing me to test the breaks in a big way. After that it was time to switch drivers. As we continued towards our campground reservation in West Yellowstone, we saw a buffalo meandering along the side of the road. Can't wait for tomorrow to begin our visit of this park to see what else we'll see for wildlife and to experience the geysers and hot springs.Read more

  • Yellowstone National Park

    August 1, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We spent today at Yellowstone National Park. We entered through the west entrance after spending the previous night at the KOA in West Yellowstone. First on the agenda was to find a campground which we did within the park at Indian Creek Campground. It's dry camping so no perks like electricity for the next couple of days. Next we visited the Mammoth Springs and did the hour walk to see them all up close. The land formations were very different from the forest and meadows in other parts of the park. Taking the recommendation of last night's camping neighbors, we ventured to Boiling River which is a place where the hot springs empty into a cold river. We were able to wade and sit in the stream once we found the spot that wasn't too hot or too cold. After our soak in the river, we traveled to a picnic area and had a picnic dinner which ended with a red fox coming to visit. All other picnicers gathered by our table to watch the fox which came very close...I retreated to the camper, Robert throw a rock and off it went. We almost got pinned into the area though, because as cars approached and saw a group of people looking in the same direction, everyone stopped to join. This was the case a few miles down the road where there were lots and lots of bison. Some were close to the road, some were peppering the meadows and one was walking down the road. Their massive size made them fun to watch. After this we called it a day and headed back to our campground but not before we saw more buffalo, prong-horns (antelope) and elk.Read more

  • Exploring Yellowstone

    August 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Another day at Yellowstone but we spent the majority of the day seeing the abundance of hot springs and geysers around the Old Faithful area. We enjoyed seeing the eruption of this famous geyser twice as well as the boardwalk that brought us around to other smaller geysers. After Old Faithful we continued along the bottom driving route of the park. We had a cookout in a picnic area and then as evening set in, we went on our drive to see more wildlife. Once again we saw elks and lots of bison, many of which were in the road causing quite the traffic jam. Robert also was able to see a wolf in the lens of a spotting scope belonging to the man standing next to us. Very impressive. We have now been to most of the areas in the park that are highlighted in the visitors guide and will be ready to head for Helena, Montana tomorrow to visit Ron and Karen Pare.Read more

  • West Yellowstone and on to Montana

    August 3, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After leaving Yellowstone National Park, we stopped outside the west entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. All of the animals had been rescued for various reasons. We especially enjoyed watching the grizzly's search for food that was hidden in their habitat. It was amazing how fast one could climb a tree to get a bird feeder. After our visit at the center, we had a another beautiful, scenic drive to Ron and Karen's in Helena, Montana.Read more

  • Lewis and Clark Taverns (Montana)

    August 4, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

While Karen and Ron were at work, we went to the Lewis and Clark Caverns in one of Montana's state parks near Willow Creek, Montana, about 1 1/2 hours from Helena. According to our tour guide we were officially "spelunking".....exploring a cave. This was a first for both of us and we thoroughly enjoyed the new experience. The cave is lined with many different stalactites, stalagmites, columns and helicites. The caverns were carved from the Madison Limestone Formation which was a rock layer that formed over 350 million years ago. It was very impressive and our pictures don't do it justice. Thank you Karen and Ron for recommending such a fun place to explore.Read more

  • Ron and Karen's (Helena, Montana)

    August 5, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

This morning Ron brought Robert to see his slider truck in action and then we went to say hi to Travis H. He and his finance have a beautiful setting just outside of Helena that they are working hard to make into their own. Then it was time to say good bye to Ron and Karen as we left to continue our journey. We had a great visit and it was so nice to see them. About an hour east of Helena, Robert had an enormous cinnamon roll from the Montana Wheat Bakery in Three Forks that Ronald told him he had to experience before leaving Montana.....it was truly an experience. The roll was huge. We continued eastward and did a brief exploration of Bozeman, Montana for Meghan and Randy. We really liked it and think they will as well. We decided that Billings, Montana would be our destination for tonight so that we can make it easily to Grand Rapids, South Dakota in the morning. We had a nice dinner at the Olive Garden (thank you to the Larsen Family for the gift certificate) and then decided Walmart was easier than finding a campground. Believe it or not, at 9:00 pm we are one of 20 RV/campers in the parking lot.Read more

  • Motorcycles and more motorcycles

    August 6, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We arrived in South Dakota today along with thousands of Harley Davidsons on their way to Sturgis. Since it was on our way, we stopped to see all the excitement. The amount of motorcycles was unbelievable! They were everywhere. We continued on to our campground and then decided to go to Mt. Rushmore at night to see the monument lit up. There was a ceremony and movie prior to the lighting that was very well done. At the end all military men/women, past and present were invited to the stage to be honored and to take down and fold the flag. You could hear a pin drop amongst the crowd of people. It was very moving and ranks up there with the ceremony at the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.Read more

  • South Dakota

    August 7, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

There are motorcycles literally everywhere you go here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Things take a little longer which we are use to with the visitation rates being high this time of year. We visited the Crazy Horse Monument that is still under construction. I'm not sure we'll live long enough to see it's completion but we got some nice pictures of their dream. Next we continued to Custer State Park which was like a miniature Yellowstone. Along with more buffalo we also saw cute burros that are descendants of those that were let loose many years ago when they stopped using them. Our campground here is huge with lots of activities for all ages. There is lots to see her in this area of our country.....we need to come back.Read more

  • Time to head home....

    August 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We have officially started home now with longer travel days and shorter stops along the way. Our first stop was to see the wood carvings done by a chainsaw carver in Keystone, SD. He was a very talented guy with beautiful carvings that we wished we could have afforded. Next stop was at Wall Drugstore in Wall, South Dakota. Though we were advised to keep driving, we had to see it at least once. The hundreds of billboards we similar to Pedro's South of the Border signs on the east coast. Interesting store but we can continue driving next time. The same was true with our next stop in Mitchell, South Dakota at the Corn Palace. We're seen it once and that's enough. It had many huge pictures all made out of corn cobs... over 275,000 to be exact. Not a stop we'll need to make again but interesting. We ended our day stopping for the night in Sioux Falls, SD. They have done a nice job with their Park along the falls. The falls were small in comparison to the beautiful ones we saw in Oregon but obviously a token of pride for the people of Sioux Falls.Read more

  • Continuing towards home....

    August 9, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today, for the first time all summer, we woke up to a heavy rain so I guess it was a good day to travel. Fortunately within 2 hours we drove out of it and though cloudy, the day was fine. We were a little amazed with the amount of road construction going on in Minnesota along I90. We had a surprise road sign pop up today as well. Of course I had to slow down for a picture. As we left Minnesota we also crossed the Mississippi and are officially in the east. It was kinda sad meaning vacation is almost over. We ended our day just west of Chicago. Still on track to arrive back in Vermont on Saturday.Read more

  • Back in New England

    August 11, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We continued to put in long travel days as we work to make Saturday our day of arrival back home to Newport. So far, so good.....right on schedule. On Thursday the 10th we were west of Chicago and we were able to make it to western New York that night. We stayed at a small campground, nothing more that a site really, but it was fine to cook our last dinner on this trip. We left early on Friday morning, stopping in Albany at the RV store and then we cut across to Agawam, Massachusetts to see our good friends Charlie and Joanna. We had such a nice visit and dinner with them...another example of how we used this trip to connect with family and good friends whenever possible. Final leg home tomorrow...mixed blessing as this trip has surpassed all our expectations leaving us with lots of pictures and memories that we will cherish forever.Read more

  • We're Home!

    August 12, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Our day began with a yummy breakfast with Charlie and Joanna at Memos in West Springfield as well as with a text message from our good friend Alan inviting us to their annual Labor Day lobster bake....a reminder that summer is coming to an end. I guess we really have been gone most of the summer. Hard to believe as it has gone by so quickly.
After 7 weeks exactly, we're back home. As we pulled into our driveway this afternoon, our trip officially ended with our good friends Randy and Margaret waiting to welcome us home. It was the perfect surprise and the perfect end to a wonderful trip.
