    Farewell to the Mayenne River

    May 7, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Arrived at the boat in Chateau Gontier a week ago. All was well and clean thanks to our local help man, Alain. Biked to supie, hardware, dealt with jet lag, and walked each am. Cruised down river to Angers, where we await our crane lift out on Weds. Very pleasant Marina location opposite large Chateau, with nice restaurants and easy cycle rides from the boat. Weather very spring like, nice days with a few showers, but cold nights. Landscapes very verdant and lush. Did a 40 k ride along La Loire a Velo, which turned in to 50 km as we got lost. Very happy with knee, hip and butt ! And another ride today to a small village on island in Loire River . Enjoyed 3 markets already from where we love buying ready to eat dinners - had delicious Moroccan lamb shanks last night. Marina restaurant tonight. All tres contentes ici .. G enjoying being under the floor boards quite a lot ! Au voir. R xRead more

Uplift and Under Way. Week 2

    May 14, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Capella craned out successfully after a pleasant 5 days there. We had a good private taxi drive 130 km to Arzal, a huge marina by the Atlantic and awaited the transporter from which we got lifted back in to the water. Stunned at the thousands and thousands of yachts at Arzal and even inland up the Vilaine River. No doubt great cruising in the Bay of Biscay and Morbihan areas. They need to fit about 20 yachts at a time in the lock leading out to the river mouth. Chandlery visit then afternoon 8 km up to La Roche Bernard, a lovely old village, but weather cloudy cold and showery. Cruising north towards Rennes - hardly any locks so far. Weather improving as we go inland Sunny today - yay. Sounds like NZ ! . XRead more

    Up stream in Brittany

    May 27, 2023, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Had lotsa trouble accessing Penguins site but may be lucky today - in indifferent weather wandered north from Arzal ( stunned at 1000s and 1000s of yachts near Atlantic and upstream ) on Vilaine to Rennes. A few nice spots but river north a bit underwhelming. Rented car for 3 day visit to St Malo, St Helier on Jersey, ( zoo with gorilla's 🦍)Cancale. Mt St Michel - all impressive. Huge 15 m tides. Back south to Redon in now constant lovely weather and enjoying the Nantes Brest Canal.Read more

    Fracture en France

    June 2, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

While on a hire bike in St Helier 2 weeks ago my tyre clipped a low unseen kerb and sent me flying to land hard on my right shoulder . Long story short I have had plate and screw surgery to repaire complex fracture in my upper humerus . In Redon Hospital for 3 nights - back to bateau tomorrow. Have a nice young roommate who also fell off her bike and fractured arm . She speaks English .All good to continue as planned hopefully, with Susie and Scott arriving on Monday . Will wear an arm brace for 6 weeks so no dishes for me, and will try to eat out amap .. am quite comfortable. Redon is good place to be as hôpital 15 min walk from boat , have Boulanger and restaurant at harbour side , mini market close , and hardware a 10 minute bike ride for G. Weather continues to be dry and hot . A couple of bad photos today ! Probably time to stay home and be still, n'est-ce pas ?

Had a lovely few days on Nantes Brest Canal - chatted to families picnicking by the pontoon while we waited for lock . Man complimented me on my beginner French so I explained I was learning with Alliance Française in NZ - Ah ! He said -I am an AF tutor all over the world; from Jordan to China to South America... he knew of their branches in Akl andChch. A nice time with them . He is to the right of photo on grass. Lots of pleasant interactions on the locks, docks etc .

Surgeon very happy so stitches out but have to wear arm brace for another 4 weeks til I start physio in N Z early July. With Ross and Tricia unable to join us today due illness , we have decided to go to the Belle Ile en Mer in Bay of Biscay Sunday thru Thursday , so looking forward to some ocean and island time -and walking and maybe some swimming !Read more

    Belle Ile en Mer

    June 24, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Left Capella to drive via Vannes and Auray down the sandy strip of the Quiberon Peninsula to Car Ferry for 1 hour crossing to Le Palais Harbour on Belle Ile. Cloudy weather but Belle Ile is a gem. Drove around the southern coast before checking in at Le Cardinal Hotel by Sauzon Harbour in the north. Think Port Fitzroy in 27 degrees, blue sky, many yachts, and gentle sophistication harbourside ! Hotel was great with pool and spa, harbour view, and our own little beach 2 minutes down the cliff. Walked coastal areas, and swam in the Atlantic Ocean each day - all very natural and beautiful. Great harbourside bar by the lighthouse with Moscow Mules and Chardonnay each evening before a lovely meal. Hotel had a vegetarian buffet which we loved also for 2 dinners. Great to give G a break from cooking, laundry, and doing dishes …. Back to boat now in Redon, preparing to head down the Villaine River tomorrow to Arzal, prior to lift out there, then train to CDG to head home. Will miss the warmth, the peace , the ever friendly Bretons and the patisserie ! But always good to be home n’est-ce pas ? Au revoir for now xRead more
