      OTR: Day 2 … Armidale

      March 15 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Armidale is not only a university town, it is also the de facto capital of the region.

We had chosen it because its size pretty much guaranteed that we would find overnight accommodations. And we did. At one of the motels. A clean, spacious room with a kitchenette … and breakfast delivered to the room on request. That it was convenient to the CBD and walking distance to eateries was a bonus.

We arrived in Armidale to a drizzle that let up long enough for us to walk to the pub at St Kilda’s Hotel … recommended by the manager at the motel for good pub grub at reasonable prices. They did not steer us wrong, though the portions were huge!

After dinner, we walked across the street for some gelato. A mistake. Not so much because the sweet treat wasn’t good … it was fine … we’ve had better. No, the problem was that it started to rain on the way back to the motel. Where were our rain jackets? In the car! Oh well, a warm room awaited us, so we hurried back for a relaxing evening of watching TV.

OTR: Day 3 … NERAM in Armidale

      March 16 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

When we checked into the Armidale Pines yesterday, we placed our breakfast order as well. This turned out to be a smart move. Not only was the food tasty and plentiful — and delivered to our room — but we avoided having to go out in the rain to find a bakery or café.

We had two places we wanted to visit in Armidale before getting on the road.

One was the Saumarez Homestead, which was built between 1888-1906 on one of the first sheep stations in the area. As luck would have it, the place is closed temporarily … no explanation.

That left us with NERAM — the New England Regional Art Museum.

The museum is home to the Howard Hinton Collection … Australian artwork from the period between 1880 and 1940. Hinton, a British-born shipping merchant, had a great appreciation for art and artists … an appreciation that he generously shared with others rather than amass a treasure trove of art for himself.

The free exhibit at NERAM rotates art from the 1,000+ pieces that Hinton donated to the Armidale Teachers’ College.

After wandering through the current rotation from the Hinton Collection, we paid the admission to enter the exhibit in the adjacent room … works by the finalists of the 2023 Wynne Prize … the oldest prize given out since 1897 by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The goal of the prize is to raise “… questions about how human intervention is changing the natural world. …”

      Going inland

      November 6, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Leaving behind the coast line for a few days, we’ve travelled inland towards areas that have had a lot of rain recently. One place we had planned to visit - Forbes - has sadly been flooded for days. When we set off we weren’t 100% sure our route would be clear, but we were ok in the end.

As we filled up with ever more expensive diesel, the garage guy asked where we were off to. We said Armidale and in his direct Aussie way he said ‘why?’! We had no good reason other than it was a stop off on a longer journey - but his honest comment gave us a good giggle.

The road to Armidale is called the waterfall way. We stopped off at a couple of waterfall viewpoints, a forest walkway, and for a cuppa (where we overheard an excellent conversation between two older ladies about fences, committees and neighbours!)

We eventually arrived at Armidale, where we’d booked a cabin for the night. The cabin was small, woody and sauna like inside, but it was cosy and had all we needed for one night.

      Armidale

      January 17, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      November 9, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Kommt man dort vorbei sollte man unbedingt dorthin gehen!

      Armidale

      November 10, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      Letzter Tag in Armidale

      November 12, 2018 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Costumes, Cleaning and heaps of fun

      April 7, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Who would've thought cleaning and tidying up could be so much fun?
The drama department finally found a key for one of their store rooms and of course that one looked like an absolute mess.
One day before we left for the holidays we started cleaning and throwing things out because most of the things in there were ready for the bin (we even found mummified lemons).
Some of the costumes were still wearable though and we had heaps of fun dressing up in all the crazy ways
possible. And of course we took pictures of our favourite creations. 💕

Back home to Armidale for the last time

      June 12, 2017 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

After four amazing days in Sydney it was time to say goodbye. Goodbye to this extraordinary city which we visited so many times in the last year and if it was only as a stopover at the airport.
We left heavy hearted because it will probably be quite some time (I do plan on coming back one day💕) before we will see Sydney again.
Next week we will fly to Sydney but only to change planes and fly to Melbourne so that wasn't much of a help.
Those last four days showed me a new side of Sydney (not quite as crowded as on New Years Eve and somehow more relaxed than usual) which I've come to love and I think I can say that Brisbane and Sydney are now equal at first place in my top Australian cities ranking. 💕
It was not only our last time exploring Sydney, it was also our last time flying home to Armidale. The place we got to call home for the last year.
I still can't believe how fast time has flown by and that we only have 8 days left (it is the 15th as I'm writing this) until we have to leave this place and all our friends here behind.
Two days ago on Tuesday we had our farewell at the school assembly (one week early because the last week tends to get quite hectic).
We were praised by the girls and got a goodbye card from the people we worked with and a NEGS sports bag with our names embroided on them as a gift (quite handy because I needed a second piece of luggage anyway and they really are beautiful). 💕
Heather also said a few words about us and we gave a short thank you speech to the school and everyone we worked with. 💕
It was one of the hardest things we had to do simply because it meant recalling all the wonderful friendships that have formed and all the amazing experiences we got to make with the knowledge that it will soon be over and we will have to leave.
Anyway I'm immensely grateful for everything and everyone that has happened to me during this year and I'm so lucky to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. 💕

      ESC Sleepover

      May 13, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

What do you do when you really want to watch the Eurovision Song Contest but you are in Australia and it starts at 5am and your TV doesn't really work?
You have a sleepover in Dickens House (empty boarding house) and just put three mattresses right in front of the TV so you only have to open your eyes and turn the TV on at 4:59am the next day.
We also ordered pizza that day and made an extraordinary desert consisting of chocolate, peanut butter, marshmallows, caramel, peanuts, cookie dough and pretzels. 💕
We ate and watched some DVDs before we set our alarms and went to sleep.
The next morning we had lots of fun watching the ESC even though it was yet again a huge fail for Germany.
