      Murray River Basin Free camping

      February 12, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

So many camping options around the mighty Murray and upstream tributaries.

Just outside the fruit town of Berri was a site amongst the gum trees. Berri nice I reckon.

We went in search of a site near Robinvale that was tagged in WikkiCamps but found NO CAMPING signs. A friendly local spotted our confusion and told us about a spot where she goes with her family every Easter. Super!
Such a magic camp deserves a special dinner. Mission completed. Crispy Turmeric Potato and Port Lincoln Prawn Omelet cooked Al fresco of course.

No issues finding another excellent free camp on the Murrumbidgee near Point Darlington. They are scattered over a couple of K’s along the river. We reckon this site is even better than last night.

Final stop for this leg of the trip. We are 1k from the centre of Wagga. It’s a busier camp than most but it’s almost in town and has a toilet and garbage collection. No complaints from us. Also the cycle path that tracks around the perimeter of the town and zig-zags beside the river, at 42k in length is probably the best we have seen in a regional centre.

The Murray, just like us after the omelette, is as full as a goog. The Murray system is at 92% capacity with 192,198 GL for the entire basin. All the upstream river systems also have plenty of water ranging up to 104% full. The irrigators of NSW, VIC and SA must be pretty happy. I hope the system gets a good flush.

I was racing to get the 30kms done in the morning so I could have lunch at the Post Office Hotel in Maude. I discovered that the Maude weir had to be portaged first, and this took 2.5 hours and a lot of grunting and cursing, lowering the long suffering kayak down a steep muddy bank with a rope. Made it to the pub for dinner, an iconic Outback pub, complete with some blue singleted workers, well used 4WD's out the front, and strangely, a young Estonian bartender!
Heading into a remote section of about 200kms before Balranald.

      Wentworth to Yanga Woolshed

      September 29, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We woke up on the river bed, still dry and not bogged, and after brekky we continued on through Wentworth towards Euston where we had morning tea on the Murry River. Next stop was Balranald and the Visitors Centre. Out the back they have a very interesting old school.
Built in 1886 by John Wington Murphy as the original Wington Homestead it later became the schoolhouse for the children living on Wington. The governess lived in one half and the kids were taught in the other half. A hessian curtain divided the two halves. The walls were lined with hessian and daubed with mud to make it waterproof and dustproof. It was moved to its present site in 1995. We then headed off to Yanga Woolshed.
Built on the Murrumbidgee River in the late 1800's it was once one of the biggest sheds in the district. It is over 100 mts long and could hold 3000 grown sheep and originally had 40 stands. The last shearing took place in 2005 before it was purchased by the NSW Government and gazetted as a National Park in 2007. After a good look around we were once again on the road heading to Hatfield where we planned to spend the night.

Windy last night with a strong southerly wind and this morning was the first time this trip I felt cold. I had my beanie on until lunchtime when the sun finally started to shine.
There seem to be more Stations and shacks in this area, dotted regularly along the riverbank, maybe because it is getting closer to bigger population centres like Mildura and Renmark.
Two obstacles to navigate today, an old weir and a very low bridge. With the weir, (the 10th so far this trip), I was able to float the kayak around the edge of the weir without having to unload it, and I was able to drag the kayak up the beach, over the road and down the other side. Have a look at the bridge in the photos. Still used regularly by the look of it!

Made it into Pooncarie after a long paddle with the current slowly dropping away to nothing due to the effect of the Pooncarie weir. In fact I went past Pooncarie by a kilometre or so as there was absolutely no visible sign of the town from the river!
I'm always nervous about pitching the tent in a town and leaving it unattended, but as usual there was no issue, with Pooncarie (population currently 40) being a very pleasant place.
Went to the pub for dinner and had a couple of beers and a pizza which went down a treat.

An easy paddle into Robinvale caravan park this morning. Rest day tomorrow.
Robinvale is a soldier settlement town and a sister city to Villers Bretonneux. Definitely not a tourist town! One IGA and 3 Asian Grocery stores in the main street. Had lunch at JoJo's fish'n'chips run by a Vietnamese family. Friendly, efficient service, good food and reasonable prices. An excellent example of how to run a takeaway business. Outof the 25 people there I was one of only 3 westerners.
Located the right gas cannister (phew!) and got my phone working again after I think the Sim card got wet. All good now.

A nice relaxed days paddling today. I did contemplate pushing on to Robinvale (10kms away) to check out the Saturday night action but thought the better of it.
No current in the river today as the Euston weir basically forms a lake behind it. This will be the situation the whole way through SA I think. Quite a lot of campers and fishers on the river today, to be expected I suppose being a Saturday.
No internet for the last couple of days. Missing the morning news and being able to download podcasts. How dependent we become on technology!
Robinvale Vale tomorrow and a search for camping gas. Fingers crossed, otherwise it's cold canned food until Mildura.
RIP Dad who died 2 years ago today.

      Balranald and Surrounds

      September 4, 2016 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

.....where the Wetlands meets the Outback.

Headed off to spend a few days at Tooleybuc today so Steve could have a rest. This (Tooleybuc) is something he needs to do and who am I to argue. Stopped and had lunch on the way be the roadside and arrived at Tooleybuc around 1.00. Whilst driving around checking out the place, Steve spotted a sign for Balranald. He didn't have much to say about Tooleybuc but we headed for Balranald as we hadn't been there before. As we drove over the Murrumbidgee River we spotted a lush green caravan park on the banks. We both said "that's the park we'll stay at". Spent 2 nights here for the bargain price of $28 and checked out the pub while we were here, as you do. We also came across a frog, which represents the Southern Bell Frog, which is endangered species, also known as the Growling frog and low and behold a Toad sat down along side him. "Mary you need to loose weight my dear", I said to myself as I saw the photo.Read more
