Our first caravan park for 3 weeks

      June 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

A bottle shop nearby. That is a really good thing. Let’s just dwell on that for a moment. It’s less than 5k away, it is open beyond a 2pm > 6pm window. Don’t get too giddy while we have a little reality check: I still have to provide my Drivers license to make a purchase (think about that for a moment). For now I don’t have to prove where I will stay tonight to consume my purchases, and happily there was no requirement for the states finest (Police Force) to administer my purchase here in WA. Can you believe the State Police spend part of their shifts overseeing the antics at bottle shops - every day.

Change of tack: We are in Tom Price. It is a really big caravan park. We have the dirtiest van. Is it a shaming thing - that we were were offered the $10 wash your caravan service? I think we will have the dirtiest caravan at our next port of call too, where they actually charge for drinking water. $10 for 20 litres. What do you reckon? Just wait until we post photos from Coral Bay - yes it is as beautiful as it sounds. It’s just dry.

There are a lot of Galas here.

While we are in the highest town in WA, Tom Price at 747m, let’s dash up Mount Nameless (1128m), for great views of the Mine and the town that was built in 1960.

      Tom Price

      June 28, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Brett loves looking out the window as we drive and pointing out the mountains he would love to climb. Today we stopped and climbed one.
Brett - No tracks, no maps, no guides!
So proud of the boys, it wasn’t easy, it was hot, the grass looks nice but is super spiky, and it was very steep at times. They did it! Bring on the next challenge :)Read more

      A Peek at The Pilbara!

      July 1, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Hi there from Tom Price, deep inside the Pilbara region of WA. We had the best time in the Kimmberleys, there is so much to see & do from the coast to the ranges. Such a huge area of natural beauty which you never tire of seeing.

On leaving Broome Thurs week ago we headed down the Great Northern Hwy staying @ Cape Keraudren on the southern end of 80 mile to watch the Stairway To The Moon event, quite spectacular then onto a cattle station, Pardoo Station which also fronts the beach. Lovely stop, quite relaxing. Tried my had at fishing but no luck.

From here we travelled onto Port Hedland just for a night. What an interesting place it is. An industrial Melba, full of red dirt, 4WD 's & yellow & orange work gear everywhere. I would describe it as Kooragang Is on steroids for those who know Newcastle.
Giant ships, railroads, conveyor belts, ore loaders, trucks & the lights at night were something else. Plenty of jobs on offer I am led to believe.
We headed on our way out to Tom Price but were held up by a terrible truck accident that closed the hwy for nearly 24 hours. The roadtrains are relentless, most 4 trailers long Then there is the 2,8 Klm trains all carrying iron ore to the Port. It is full on.

We are all well, travelling fine & keeping up to date on what is happening back east & over here.
Stay safe & well & we will give you an update after our visit to Karijini NP over the next few days, quite looking forward to it as everyone we have ran into rate it so highly.

      Tom Price

      September 4, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

As we drove towards Tom Price it was pretty clear we were entering mining country. There were numerous mountain ranges of red rocks. It was a 300km drive today with a short stop in Paraburdoo which is a town built by Rio Tinto to support one of their mines in the early seventies. It has a population of 2500 but has plenty of worker accomodation villages which indicates a large fifo workforce. Tom Price built in the 60’s was the same so the housing and infrastructure are exactly the same.

Tom Price is situated at 747 metres above sea level which is the highest town in WA and is consequently the same height as Arthur’s Pass township in NZ. The population is 6500 so quite a bit larger. Our camp ground is on the road to the Tom Price mine which is an enormous open cast iron ore mine. We hope to book a tour to look around one day.

We arrived at lunchtime and after we had sorted out our site we headed into town to get some groceries. Again we found a purpose built town centre with all the essential things and not much more. We drove around the town to check out the housing and community facilities. All of these mine/ infrastructure towns have great community facilities and the schools are very well supported.

Today was the second day in 2 months we were under 30 degrees and are expecting quite a cool night. Tomorrow we will drive out to Karijini National Park to explore. We are hoping for some nice walks after being on the road for the last 2 days.
