    • Day 50

      Tasmania

      January 12, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

After breakfast in Windows, we headed to the shuttle to Burnie.

We signed up for a tour with 6 other folks. 4 from UK and the other 2 from Florida.

Stephen , the driver of the 2000 Haice van (just like Glenn’s in Guatemala) gave us a tour, overlooking the harbor, through poppie fields, cattle area, and the small tourist white beach town.

Weather was beautiful, warm and delightful.

      Great day.

      Rocky Cape National Park Teil1

      December 9, 2016 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Read more

      Arthur River - Corinna

      November 28, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Still based at Arthur River we drove to Corinna in the South Tarkine on the advice of multiple locals. They failed to mention the 90kms of gravel road, much of which has seen better days. Two and a half hours later we arrived at Corinna on the banks of the Pieman River. This was an early piners and mining explorers settlement with a notoriously treacherous bar to cross at the mouth of the river. Memorials to many people lost on the bar were peppered through the township. The only way south from here is across the "Fatman Barge" that runs on demand. The barge operator seemed to spend his time in the local tavern waiting for his next fare. We ventured out on the Whyte River walk which was a circuit from the town to the Whyte River/Pieman River junction. A lovely walk that turned out a bit harder than we originally thought. The 2½ hour drive back to Arthur River awaited us.Read more

      up the hill to waratah

      January 10, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

just a cool 500 m ride up tje 50km to Waratah with some grand sights and waterfalls . Interesting town in that it shows what depopulation to a town does and the adjacent town of Letita built in the 60,s as a new town for mining is now completely deserted with plants growing through the tarmac and the forest reclaiming the town.Lot of forestry with big sawdust mountains at the mill.
Staying at an old and only hotel in Waratah where en suites havent yet reached but have now got to communal bathrooms also a joint communal area for everybody to exchange their holiday travels.Nothing to report on custard slices sad lack pf them all day today

      Spot the platypus

      January 9, 2019 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Highlight of the day was platypus spotting. You don’t see much as mostly they are swimming and feeding under water an they do it at dusk. So hopefully you believe from the two poor photos attached. We are staying at a great Airbnb with Rick and Jen in Ridgley about 12 kms south of Burnie. They have a pond with 3 platypuses. So really exciting as I have never seen one in the wild. They also made us a BBQ and salad for a meal this evening.
Also need to give a mention to Nathan, Brianna and Ben at the chapel cafe in Burnie, great coffee and great breakfast that included for Simon custard on brioche. Tomorrow the climb begins.

      Penguin & Boat Harbour Beach

      February 24, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We continued on Tasmania's north coast to the East. On the way we passed one of these funny city names: Penguin🐧 We stopped to find some penguins and we did :) Further down the road we even found some dolphins and another beautiful beach. Amazing these beaches in Tassie! And yes we went for a swim!

    • Day 182

      The North Coast

      December 2, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Yesterday was great. I got to pet a wombat, spotted quoll, and Tasmanian devil! I bought some food for the birds, wallabies, and roos. The swans and ducks gathered right at my feet although not close enough to touch. There was an adorable little red-neck wallaby who ate right out of my hand. He grabbed my hand with his front paws and chowed down. I could even stroke his neck a little while he ate. But I think the best was a large male kangaroo (a buck). He was lounging in the shade of a tree/bush using a flat rock as a pillow. He was pretty intimidating with his giant hind feet and claws, but I had the bag of food that his nose seemed to recognize. I crept closer and closer, then slowly extended my hand with feed in it. His soft nose brushed against my fingers as he gently licked up the food from my palm. It was incredible.

After the Wildlife park, I went to Mole Creek Caves that contain, most notably, glow worms. They're really larvae of Fungus Gnats and they are very bright, especially once your eyes have adjusted to the dark. There's also a chamber with the "Palm Tree" because of its shape (it looks so much like one, I guessed its name) and the Cathedral, in which I belted out the first verse and chorus of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree. Had to be done. 😉

Another greatest moment of a very full day was in Devonport at 9 pm when I watched Little Penguins come in to feed their chicks. You must use red light so they don't get scared, so the few pictures I took didn't really come out, even after I converted them to black and white. The two attached are one coming out of the water (on the left, dark spot in the surf) and three preening on the beach. They're about a foot tall, the smallest of all penguins, and the only ones native to Australia. I was the only person (other then the three volunteers) who stayed long enough to see one nest where both parents had been out feeding, came back, and fed the two chicks. Magnificent.

Today has been mostly driving along the northern coast. I've made several stops, but just as I get started on walking around it starts to rain. Then the sun comes back out. Then it rains again. The wind is very high and gusty, and the temperature is about 17°C/62°F. When the sun is out, it's downright hot, but the stupid wind is frigid. Come on, Tazzy, it's summer!

Interesting fact about Tazzy: it's the world's leading producer of legal poppy (medicinal use). Some of the poppy fields are in bloom, and all of the fields have signs posted identical to the one in the picture. The growing conditions are great, but most of all, this is an island whose borders can be more easily guarded making smuggling on or off the island very difficult.

Now, I'm at Three Sisters Beach and about to head to the northwest coast where I plan to spend the night. Probably in the car again. Hotels are at least $100 Australian a night and can reach $250 near the tourist draws. Waaaaay too much.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

      Lake Mackintosh

      November 22, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Finally! A day warm enough and still enough to hazard a paddle in the kayaks. I was worried they had actually become permanently attached to the roof racks. We geared up and hit the water for a lovely morning's exploration of the lake. Had another try to catch some breakfast (or anything) but no luck.
The water is stained by the tannins from the vegetation but incredibly clear when you are up close. Just a lovely day.

    • Day 50

      Lake Mackintosh

      November 21, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Heading north we passed through the small town of Tullah and turned off to Lake Mackintosh, one of the hydro storage lakes along the west coast. We found a lovely camp spot overlooking the lake and not another camper in sight, although I had a nagging feeling we weren't actually in the designated camping area. Oh well. The weather was fine for a change and had warmed up a fraction. We cracked out the fishing gear and went in search of some brown trout. No luck though.
Had a visit from the local wildlife around sunset.

      Corinna

      January 22, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      It's Girl's Trip Time
