      Otra tanda en Brujas

      August 6, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

      Castles, chocolate and ‘fairytale stuff’

      August 26, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I arrive in Bruges late evening after a long day of travelling. I venture out for dinner and end up combining two of Belgium’s most known delicacies, waffles and chocolate… healthy eating can wait.

The town itself is beautiful. It’s old and quaint and has a medieval feel, with its cobblestone streets and colourful buildings, although in reality most of the buildings only date back to the 16th/17th century but were built in a Neogothic style which has managed to preserve Bruges’ medieval feel. It’s led to a pretty, little city which could easily be the setting for a Disney movie. The city alone has 50 castles within its borders. It’s a beautiful little place to get lost in outside of the main tourist drag.

The touristy bit centred around two main squares, the Markt (or Market in English) and ‘De Burg’ which houses an old court house and the Basilica of the Holy Blood which holds a relic of (surprise, surprise) the holy blood, allegedly collected by Joseph of Arimathea.
The tourist centre of Bruges is busy, with more English accents than anything else. It’s an assault on the senses as the smell of chocolate wafts from shops left and right, luring you in, until a horse drawn carriage passes by and the smell of dung hits wakes you rudely from the chocolate based fantasy. Horsey smells aside, Bruges quickly charms me and I spend much of the time just walking around, taking it all in and practising my Dutch.

Belgium has 3 official languages, Dutch (technically Flemish), French and German in that order. Apparently my Dutch passes for Belgian as people respond to me in fluent Flemish to which I’m at a total loss with. In the Netherlands everyone just responds in English 🤷🏻‍♀️

From Bruges it’s on to Ghent which seems to be a more functional city despite its medieval flourishes. I take in castles and more of Belgium’s quaint antiquated buildings before realising that I need to do some admin. The woman at my hostel reception informs me that there’s a laundrette with an inbuilt bar just round the corner called ‘Wasbar’ and I’m instantly sold. Clothes in the machine and drink in hand I relax for a little while before commandeering a dryer. Two hours later and my clothes still aren’t dry. I throw them in again and take a wander round to my hostel where one of the girls in my dorm warns me not to expect much from the Wasbar dryer.

I catch up with editing and planning and a few hours later I settle into my bunk, close my eyes and try to ignore the forest of wet clothes hanging on the slats of the bed above me…. Wasbar strikes again!

      Bruges/Brugge

      September 28, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Will probably post more of Bruges tomorrow, but here's a few from my wanderings after I arrived. The one overlooking the market square is from my room 😍, and my hotel is in the middle of the row of green awnings. (The little food stall in front of the tower is where I had my extremely healthy dinner of fries slathered in sauce.) And yes...I found another door.Read more

      Windmühlen am Stadtwall

      July 5, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      July 7, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

In diesem Sinne: „Het was Leuk“…….

      And the Journey Has Begun

      September 2, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We are now in Bruges, Belgium. It was a long journey yesterday. The trip started at 2 pm, picking up Laura from work and then driving to Victory to pickup Emma and drive to the airport. 22 hours later, after one long and two short flights, two short bus rides, two train trips and a whole bunch of walking we arrived at our hotel at 9 pm local time. It all went very smoothly with only minor delays in the flight to Vancouver and train to Bruges.
After I had a nice hot shower and Laura relaxed, we then went downstairs where I had a big Belgium beer and Laura had a special fruit juice blend in the hotel bar. We finished the day with a walk to a small snack bar not far from the hotel for some fries and a frikandel.

      Sweet Sweet Bruges

      September 3, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today started with an all you can eat breakfast I thought was included in the price of our room. While just starting to feast on the huge selection of food and drink offerings I was asked my room number. After looking it up, I told was that we hadn’t paid for the optional breakfast. No way was I going to back out now. Too hungry! I didn’t even ask the price. When Laura came down soon after I told her what had happened. She also saw what was being offered and decided to go for it anyways as well. We indulged as much as we could in the litany of choices. The pleasure didn’t come cheap. But, sometimes in life that just doesn’t matter.

We spent the rest of the morning touring the town on foot using a free app that has a variety of walking routes featuring the city’s highlights. We chose one that is about 5 km long and guides you to the city’s most impressive historical buildings and features, many dating back as much as eight centuries! The stops of interest all included a short written description to give you insightful information.

Around noon we headed back to our hotel, grabbing some food at a grocery enroute to make ourselves a lunch. Laura searched out a bike rental place nearby and, after our lunch break, we walked there to see if they had a bike for each of us to use. They did, and it only cost us about $30 for both bikes. And we could keep them until closing at 7 pm.

With the bikes we headed to Damme, about 6 km away. We followed along a beautiful, flat, paved and shaded path to get there. Once there we parked the bikes and walked around to see this historic little town. Before heading back on our bikes we found a table for two at an outdoor cafe and relaxed and had a cold beverage while watching the world go by.

Near our hotel is a Chinese restaurant with a menu posted outside. Already yesterday I had noticed that they serve my favourite Indonesian bami and nasi dishes. Laura was interested so we went there for dinner. We both ordered Nasi Goreng with Chicken. The food was good but very pricey, and we didn’t like that we had to pay for water. Not sure if that is typical for all Belgium restaurants.

Brugge is a beautiful place to be. Unless you’re diabetic! The number of shops selling delectable sweets is incredible! Waffles, macaroons, nougat … chocolate, ice cream. I resisted all the temptations except for the beautiful macaroons being sold in a stand at a market. My mom use to bake them and they were always one my favourites! So, I had to buy a couple. I did well though because I would have got a much better deal by buying five!

      Abendspaziergang durch Brügge

      October 31, 2019 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Sehr lecker!

      Stadterkundung Brügge

      May 30, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      June 5, 2022 in Belgium ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

      Dag Brugge! :)

Not as mysterious as in the movie with all the tourists, but it seems real that it gets misty sometimes. In the afternoon the top of the buildings were covered in fog.

Besides, around the countryside where we stayed at a cute B&B, we met very friendly people which helped us out with some Flamish words :)Read more
