      Die Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião, oft nur „Catedral Nova“ genannt, ist eine katholische Kirche. Die von Edgar Fonseca im Stile des Modernismus entworfene und von 1964 bis 1979 errichtete Kathedrale ist Sitz des Erzbistums São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.
      Das Kirchengebäude ist 75 Meter hoch und hat eine kreisförmige Grundfläche mit einem Durchmesser von 106 Metern. Das Gebäude ähnelt von außen einer spitzenlosen Pyramide, sodass Fonseca oft Inspirationen durch Maya-Pyramiden nachgesagt werden. Das gesamte Gebäude besteht aus Stahlbeton, die Fassade ist unverputzt.
      Der kreisförmige Innenraum hat eine Grundfläche von 8200 Quadratmetern, ist 64 Meter hoch, hat einen Durchmesser von 96 Metern und wird vom zentral angelegten Altar dominiert. Der Innenraum soll Platz für bis zu 20.000 Gläubige (stehend) oder 5000 Gläubige (sitzend) haben. Die Gebetsbänke reihen sich in konzentrischen Kreisen um den Altar, über dem von der Decke herab ein großes Holzkreuz hängt. Der Innenraum wird von vier Seiten durch große, bis zur Decke laufende, farbige Fenster beleuchtet, die für die vier Wesensmerkmale der universalen Kirche (Einheit, Heiligkeit, Katholizität und Apostolizität) stehen sollen. Die Decke lässt ebenso Licht in Form eines griechischen Kreuzes in den Innenraum fallen.

      The Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião, often just called "Catedral Nova", is a Catholic church. The cathedral, designed by Edgar Fonseca in the modernist style and built between 1964 and 1979, is the seat of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.
      The church building is 75 meters high and has a circular base with a diameter of 106 meters. The building resembles a topless pyramid from the outside, so Fonseca is often said to be inspired by Mayan pyramids. The entire building is made of reinforced concrete, the facade is unplastered.

      Last city walk in Rio

      After the tram we continued to do a walk a bit more for a few extra sights to see.

      The old aquaduct that looked straight out of Rome, formally water and now for a tram.

      Metropolitan Cathedral which is a cone shape. From the outside I personally think it looks terrible, but it is much better looking in the inside. It was designed and finished in 1979 to replace the original church which was not big enough for the growing population at the time.

      Ladeira da Misericórdia, also known as Mercy Slope, is a historic street. Named after the Misericórdia Church, a prominent religious institution founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese crown to provide assistance to the poor and sick. The church was part of the Misericórdia Brotherhood, an organization dedicated to charitable work.

      We even happened to walk into a central market area where people were hustling and selling literally everything you could imagine. Mainly cheap imports though.      Read more

      Nach dem Frühstück verbrachten wir aufgrund der Hitze den Großteil des Tages auf dem Pooldeck. Danach machten wir eine Siesta im kühlen Hotelzimmer und als die Sonne am untergehen war setzten wir uns an den Strand. In Ipanema aßen wir eine Pizza und tranken eine Flasche Wein. Mit dem Uber ging es anschließend in das Party Viertel LAPA. Bei Livemusik genossen wir kaltes Bier und eine ausgelassene Stimmung. Der Tanzclub in dem wir danach waren schockierte uns positiv mit Tänzern auf Proviniveau.Read more

      Nous sommes montés à pied sur la colline de Santa Teresa. On aurait pu prendre un "bombe"(prononcer bommbé). Le bombe est une sorte de tramway très célèbre à Rio, il passe sur des arches blanches qui sont un symbole de la ville. Mais malheureusement c'était fermé le dimanche. En haut de la colline nous avons vu un très beau point de vue sur Rio. C'était magnifique. En redescendant, nous sommes passés par un escalier. Sur toutes les marches de cet escalier, il y avait de la mosaïque. Le monsieur qui a mis ces mosaïques( M. Selaron) y a passé 20 ans. Les gens lui rapportaient des carreaux de faïence de 60 pays différents. On a vu 2 fois celle de Paris.

      Escadaria Selarón ist eine Reihe Treppen in Rio, die vom Künstler Jorge Selarón mit vielen verschiedenen Fliesen bunt dekoriert sind. Zuerst ist sie vor lauter Menschen kaum zu erkennen! Die Kathedrale von Rio ist von Außen ziemlich hässlich, hat aber im Inneren schöne Buntglasfenster. Wir spazieren an einigen prachtvollen Gebäuden vorbei bis zum Fähranleger Praca XV. Da heute Sonntag ist, sind leider alle Geschäfte geschlossen und es ist gespenstisch leer. Die neu gebaute Fussgängerpromenade von hier Richtung Nordwesten führt vorbei am Zukunftsmuseum, dem AquaRio bis zum Riesenrad (eine Fahrt kostet 16 €). Gerne würden wir auch mit der Straßenbahn fahren, aber alle vier von uns getesteten Automaten geben uns leider keine Tickets raus. Einfacher ist die Fährfahrt rüber nach Arariboia für etwa 2 € pro Person. Von der Fähre aus haben wir einen schönen Blick auf Rio und die Umgebung und auf der anderen Seite schmeckt das Eis natürlich viel besser!

      Escadaria Selarón is a series of stairs in Rio that were colorfully decorated with many different tiles by the artist Jorge Selarón. At first it is difficult to recognize it because of all the people! The Cathedral of Rio is quite ugly from the outside, but has beautiful stained glass windows inside. We walk past some magnificent buildings to the Praca XV ferry dock. Since today is Sunday, unfortunately all the shops are closed and it is eerily empty. The newly built pedestrian promenade from here towards the northwest leads past the Museum of the Future, the AquaRio to the Ferris wheel (a ride costs €16). We would also like to take the tram, but unfortunately none of the four machines we tested give us tickets. The easier option is to take the ferry over to Arariboia for around €2 per person. From the ferry we have a beautiful view of Rio and the surrounding area and of course the ice cream tastes much better on the other side!      Read more

      Exploring Enchanting Rio

      Today, the four of us embarked on an enchanting walking tour through the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro. Our exploration led us to some remarkable destinations that left me in awe of this captivating city's history and charm.

      The day began with a visit to Confeitaria Colombo, a legendary café that has been a cornerstone of Rio's culinary scene since 1894. Stepping inside, we were transported back to the Belle Époque era with its grand architecture and opulent interior. Savoring the delectable pastries and traditional Brazilian cuisine, we couldn't help but imagine the conversations and gatherings that had taken place within these walls, where intellectuals, artists, and politicians would come together to share ideas and indulge in the cafe's delights.

      Continuing our journey, we found ourselves standing before the magnificent Imperial Palace, also known as Paço Imperial. This historical gem served as the residence for the Portuguese royal family during their time in Brazil.

      As we ventured into Rio's bustling Centro area, the heartbeat of the city pulsed all around me. The eclectic mix of architectural styles showcased the rich tapestry of Rio's history, from colonial buildings to towering modern skyscrapers. Immersed in the vibrant street life, we were captivated by the energy and liveliness of the markets and shops that lined the bustling streets.

      Next, we arrived at the majestic Tiradentes Palace, named in honor of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, a key figure in Brazil's struggle for independence. The palace's neoclassical design exuded an air of power and prestige, befitting its role as the seat of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It was humbling to stand in a place that held such historical significance and to contemplate the immense changes that have occurred within these walls over the years.

      One of the highlights of our tour was the awe-inspiring Municipal Theatre of Rio, also known as Theatro Municipal. Its architectural resemblance to the Paris Opera House transported us into a world of grandeur and artistic excellence. As we marveled at the intricacy of the marble work, the golden accents, and the mesmerizing stained glass ceiling, one couldn't help but imagine the captivating performances that have graced its stage.

      The grand finale of our walking tour brought us to the iconic Escadaria Selarón, also known as the Selarón Steps. Climbing these vividly colored steps adorned with a mesmerizing mosaic of tiles from around the world was a truly magical experience. As we absorbed the vibrant atmosphere and snapped photographs, we felt a profound appreciation for the artist, Jorge Selarón, whose passion and creativity brought this staircase to life.       La samba est la danse traditionnelle du Brésil. Elle se danse surtout avec les pieds et les hanches. On la danse beaucoup à Rio mais surtout pendant le carnaval. Le carnaval dure 5 jours et se finit le Mardi Gras. C'est un concours qui réunit la plupart des écoles de samba du Brésil. Chaque école​ a le droit à une heure et demi de show pour montrer ce qu'elle sait faire. Les 20 meilleures équipes refont un passage le dernier jour. Il n'y a qu'une équipe qui gagne.

      Avec Paulo qui nous a servi de guide, nous sommes allés écouter de la samba. Il nous a appris les premiers pas et nous a raconté qu'il avait fait partie du grand défilé. Il nous a raconté, que comme il fait partie de 3 écoles de samba, il a fait 3 passages au carnaval de 2017, avec bien sûr à chaque fois un déguisement différent. Il nous a montré des photos. Le déguisement qui nous a fait le plus rire était un déguisement moitié homme, moitié femme. C'est à dire que la moitié du déguisement était une robe et l'autre moitié était un costume. La moitié de son visage était maquillée mais pas l'autre.

      Samba-Fieber in Rio

      Einfach in den Bus nach Rio de Janeiro ohne Plan was mich dort erwartet...
      Nur eines ist sicher: meine Freundin Camila ist in Rio und arbeitet in einem Hostel, wo gerade absolutes Chaos herrscht. Genau dort bin ich nach etlichen gescheiterten Couchsurfing-Versuchen im Endeffekt gelandet - im Mitarbeiter-Schlafsaal (weil aufgrund unbezahlter Internet-Rechnung niemand einen Überblick über Reservierungen hat). 😂🙈

      Auch kann ich nicht wirklich behaupten in Rio gewesen zu sein... 😏 Genau genommen habe ich ein Wochenende in Lapa, dem Party-Viertel Rios, verbracht und genau eine Sehenswürdigkeit gesehen: Die Stufen. Die Tage waren sehr international und geprägt von Camilas Leidenschaft für Samba sowie täglich gemeinsamem Abendessen aller Hostelgäste mit anschließenden Bar Happy Hours und Club Crawling. 😉

      So habe ich den nationalen Tag des Sambia ganz exklusiv unter Einheimischen mit Büffet und generationsübergreifender Samba-Party mitten am Tag erlebt. Die Diversität an diesem Ort war faszinierend, mit einer 2m-großen DragQueen, einem Pharell Williams Double, einer Hüfte-schwingenden Oma sowie früh übenden Kids als meine persönlichen Highlights. 💖

      Den Tag drauf hatte ich das Glück eine professionelle Karnevalstänzerin zur Probe von Mangueira (einer der berühmten Samba-Clubs Rios) zu begleiten. Das ist eine komplett andere Welt, voll schriller Farben, Glitzer und Makeup - für meinen Geschmack einen Tick zu oberflächlich, künstlich und Fake... und Musik und Tanz schienen mir sehr repetitiv. Interessante Erfahrung, nach einigen Stunden war dann aber auch gut. 😅      Read more

      Arrivé a Rio, mais...

      En arrivant a Rio je devais attendre deux heures que le vol de valentina arrive dans le même aéroport. Il y était bien indiqué qu’on arrivé dans le même aéroport. En cherchant les tableaux avec les horaires d’arrivées des vol internationaux je ne trouvé pas. Du coup direction au guichet touristes... Et oui la compagnie aérienne c’est trompé sur mon billet. Du coup valentina arrive dans l’autre aéroport de l’autre coté de la ville. On devra ce faire rdv directement a l’hôtel ou moi je fait comme d’habitude, boire une bonne bière bien fraiche en regardant passer les gens déguisé 😝. Ps: le vol de valentina a aussi du retard. Et moi a 30 secondes près j’allais rater ma correspondance a Sao-Paulo... Ben oui c’est trop simple sinon 😊Read more

      Après avoir galéré dans un Uber pendant une demi heure car il fallait traverser les rues pleines des gens en train de fêter le Carnaval, on est arrivé au Stade Maracanã, le temple du foot brasilien. Lieu du "maracanaço" ou c’est joué la finale de la Coupe du Monde 1950 où le Brésil a perdu face à l'Uruguay et lieu où des fans Brésiliens se sont ensuite suicidés en se jetant des gradins.
