      Auf den Weg nach Siem Reap

      Heute sind wir sehr früh losgefahren, denn es geht nach Siem Reap und wir haben einige Zwischenstops auf dem Weg!
      Der erste Stop war der Skun Insektenmarkt, wo wenige Mutige eine fritierte Tarantel oder Heuschrecke probiert haben. 🤢 Ich habe tsächlich ein Spinnenbeinchen und eine Made probiert. 🙈
      Als nächstes waren wir auf einer Seidenfarm, wo uns die Besitzerin gezeigt hat, wie durch die Seidenraupen die Seide zum Weben gewonnen wird und wir konnten den Weberinnen beim Arbeiten zuschauen.
      Als letzten Zwischenstop ging es dann zu den Sambor Prei Kuk Tempeln, eine uralte Tempelanlage, älter als Angkor Wat.
      Jetzt sind wir in Siem Reap und lassen den Abend gemütlich ausklingen, da es morgen schon um 4:30 Uhr los geht. 😱      もっと詳しく

      Homestay

      Today we left our lovely hotel and Siem Reap, which was a sad depart having loved the city so much. Our next stop was our homestay which would be a true local experience of a Cambodian.

      On the way we stopped at the floating villages. These buildings and the way of life around the river was incredible. Some people living on floating houses year in and year out. Located here are some of the poorest people and it's so eye opening having an insight to their personal lives. I feel almost silly about the worries I have in life. Here, putting 3 meals on the table and feeding your children is a big worry for these families as where this is a given for me, my biggest worries ranging from whether the spot on my forehead is gone or if I moisturised my face that morning.

      I can't quite put into words how much I admire these people and they deserve so much more credit than they get. If I think about how they live in comparison to me, although it amazes me it saddens me at the same time. Having said this, all I do is see these people smile, making me question what's necessary to make someone happy and it's not always the latest iPhone or newest shoes that do this.

      Before our homestay we visited another set of temples with a lovely tour guide who did a super job. On to our homestay, which was with a delightful family who had spent the majority of the day cleaning their house and preparing our dinner in order to welcome us. They cooked up a masterpiece and I've never had a meal so tasty. Breakfast was the same, indulging in typical local treats.

      One thing I have to say about this place is I adore the kindness in people's hearts and willingness to please. Everything is always presented with a smile on their faces no matter how much they have to offer. I feel as though I'm the luckiest person being able to experience the generosity of these people, yet they act as though they are lucky to have us, which I guess makes the whole experience all the more touching.      もっと詳しく

      Treak School Week 2 (Part 1)

      Week two has been equally as jam packed as the first week; and the action-packed living has been equally exhausting and profound (keeping me from posting more regularly). Monday morning began with plastic brick making at Treak Community School. This is yet another initiative that Salin has created. Plastic is collected from the community, reducing the significant plastic pollution in the area that accumulates because no waste collection services exist. It is then heated and shrunk, chopped into small pieces, and used as aggregate for bricks. In our three hours, we made 155 bricks. It was hard, dirty, hot work! Then it was into the classrooms for the remainder of the day. Our dinner that evening was hosted at the home of Michael and Salin, which is always a wonderful privilege. Their garden is something to behold! Tuesday afternoon, after teaching for the morning, we visited Safe Haven, an NGO that works with children with a disability and their families to make a significant difference in their lives. Wednesday was then a full day in the school. By this time of the week, everyone's energy was flagging, but big days were ahead, so an early night Wednesday was vastly appreciated!もっと詳しく

      Tag 16.2. Tempelanlage Prasat Sambo

      ….Prei Kuk. Einfach nur toll 👍❤️

      Isanavarman I. machte 616 Isanapura zur Hauptstadt seines Königreiches Chenla, das hier im siebenten und achten nachchristlichen Jahrhundert blühte. Isanapura gab es aber vermutlich schon vor dem sechsten Jahrhundert. Die Ruinen bestehen aus über 150 Tempeln und Türmen und bedecken ein Gebiet von über 400 Hektar. Es gibt drei Hauptkomplexe, die von Mauern umgeben waren. Die Tempelbauten sind reich mit Reliefs dekoriert.

      Sambor Prei Kuk wurde am 8. Juli 2017 auf der 41. Sitzung des Welterbekomitees in die Liste des UNESCO Welterbes aufgenommen. Als Kriterien für die Aufnahme nennt die UNESCO dabei
      1) die einzigartige Architektur, Stadtplanung und Landschaftsplanung, welche eine Adaption aus Indien sei und einen eigenen Stil hervorgebracht habe
      2) das Zeugnis des einstmals größten religiösen Pilgerzentrums, welches eine toleranten Mischung aus hinduistischen und buddhistischen Religionen symbolisiere, und
      3) die erstmalige Verwendung oder Nennung des Harihara- und Sakabrahma-Kultes, der ersten Erwähnung der universellen Lehre des Buddhismus in Südostasien, die erste belegte Verwendung der Khmer-Schrift, und die frühesten Darstellungen traditioneller Orchester.      もっと詳しく

      Von Kampot nach Siem Reap

      Da es keine direkte Verbindung von Kampot nach Siem Reap gibt und der Highway nur an Phnom Phen vorbei führt, ging es gestern mit dem Bus um 8 Uhr erstmal wieder zurück Richtung Phnom Phen. Gegen Mittag kamen wir an, warteten eineinhalb Stunden auf den nächsten Bus und fuhren weitere 6 Stunden nach Siem Reap.       Angkor

      SiemReap ist der Ausgangspunkt für jeden, der die Tempel von Angkor besichtigen will. Die Stadt wurde im Grunde nur für den Tourismus errichtet und so gibt es hier jede Menge Möglichkeiten sein Geld loszuwerden. Ich habe die Annehmlichkeiten auch in Form von Shopping und gutem Essen genossen.

      Für den Zutritt zu den Tempeln muss man den für Kambodscha verhältnismäßig hohen Eintrittspreis von 40$ für zahlen. Mit dem Ticket haben wir danach die einzelnen Tempel mit dem TukTuk erkundet.
      Für mich waren die kleineren und wenig restaurierten Tempel definitiv das Highlight von Angkor. In einigen von diesen hat der Dschungel die Tempel bereits zurück erobert, so dass man sich bei der Erkundung ein bischen wie Indiana Jones oder Lara Craft vorkommt. Einer der Tempel ist hier auch nur als der "Tomb Raider Tempel" bekannt und jeder spricht darüber, in meinen Augen etwas übertrieben.

      Ein weiteres polarisierendes Highlight ist der Sonnenaufgang über dem AngkorWat Tempel. Mehrere Hundert Menschen, davon 80% Asiaten aus großen Tourbusen, kommen jeden Tag früh morgens um zu sehen wie die Sonne über dem Tempel aufgeht und sich im davor liegenden Teich spiegelt, auch ich wollte mir das anschauen. Es gab jedoch sehr unterschiedliche Angaben, wann die Sonne aufgeht. 5:30? 6:20?
      Ich war um 5:30 da und es tummelten sich bereits hunderte Leute um die besten Plätze, hier und da gab es Streit und Auseinandersetzungen, jeder will den besten Blick und das perfekte Foto haben. Alle warten ungeduldig und es wird langsam heller. Es ist mittlerweile 6:25 und schon sehr hell, da sagen einige Leute: " Schande, es ist zu wolkig heute, man kann die Sonne nicht sehen ". Die Reihen lichten sich und rund 50% der Leute fahren wieder nach Hause. Die besten Plätze sind nun wieder frei und ich habe ohne Drängeln oder Pöbeln einen der besten Plätze.       Updating retrospectively as there was a power cut at the hotel in Kampot last night so no Wi-Fi. Fascinating day starting with a trip to a salt farm where we saw how the (predominantly female) workers slog away in the boiling heat lugging salt around in two baskets over their shoulders! The farmer told us that last year's salt production was terribly low due to unprecedented rainfall. Although the family own the land they're not allowed by the government to use it for anything else and receive no subsidies. Must be a really terrifying existence for them. Next we travelled through ridiculously muddy roads to see rice farming. Something like 80% of Cambodia's people are rural. Their houses are basic, no real running water and although technically they have access to electricity it's so expensive they don't really use it. A lot of the farms are still ploughed with cows and planted by hand. Next we visited a cave which had a temple within it. Then, Kep, which was an old French colonial resort. Eerie and sad to see rotting shells of once beautiful villas abadoned, but at least there's a thriving market full of fish and tons of restaurants with tasty food (Kep specialises in crab and also has a giant crab statue saying 'welcome to Kep ' submerged in the sea which is exactly as tasteful as it sounds). Finally we saw a pepper plantation which was gorgeous. It grows on vines which I hadn't realiser. You could tell these farmers were a lot better paid than those we had seen the rest of the day.the region is known for producing a great crop. Interestingly the Khmer Rouge destroyed all the pepper plants during the revolution but luckily for all of us the trade is back up and running again. Back at the hotel in Kampot we went for a delicious meal to celebrate being so bloody lucky our livelihood doesn't rely on salt.もっと詳しく

      Koh Kong

      Mostly travelling today but with a few stops. First, a fishing village. The boats look pretty but I was quite shocked by the poverty people live in here. The journey then took us through more rural areas and eventually into the rainforest area which was absolutely amazing! Dense layers of trees and thick bamboo. Elephants migrate through this area but none around today :( The final stop before our hotel was to go and see Ta tai waterfall which we had to travel by small boat to see. No pics because there was torrential rain as we set off so was focusing on keeping my already delicate phone from drowning. Luckily the weather held off for a beautiful ride through the rainforest and the steam coming off the trees in the mountains made it even better. We're staying at a hotel in a mangrove sanctuary tonight so we're in a room on stilts! Arrived when it was dark so can't wait to see the trees in the light (way too terrifying to go out there in the dark 🤤)もっと詳しく

      Koh Kong

      Woke up this morning to the creepy mangrove trees outside. The hotel is a bit odd. Think tropical honeymoon meets Fawlty Towers. First trip of the day was to a local stupa. It has a legend attached to it and the locals visit it to leave offerings. It's not attributed to any particular spirit according to our guide but I read in our Lonely Planet there is still a lot of Animism locally so perhaps it could be something to do with the water, as it's in the sea and accessible via a platform. Who knows - I'm probably totally wrong. On a similar note our guide also mentioned that the shrines we see outside all houses and shops are actually to do with local gods (nothing at all to do with Buddhism. Which is not a big surprise but interesting). Next, a Buddhist temple including a garden of concrete statues depicting humans being tortured in 'hell'. I felt a little confused by the guide's explanation but I think that it's meant to remind us that we create hell in our own minds by torturing ourselves with the past/future rather than focusing on what is actually happening in the present moment. So it's not hell in the Christian sense of it as there is no such thing in the Buddhist religion. I guess in conclusion humans just like looking at gory shit no matter what they believe in. After hell we got to forget about that for a bit and enjoyed some beach time and a sea swim. Back at the hotel, we went for a walk into the mangroves but all the locals were there as it's bank holiday and it was a bit stressful on tiny wooden platforms battling human traffic in both directions so we didn't last long. Dinner was in the local town,a lot of which has been totally taken over and shut down by the Chinese. We've heard from a few locals now that this is what they're doing in several beach resorts with a mind to turn them into Chinese holiday destinations.       Siam reap

      He hoi, hier een update van je favoriete Cambodiaanse backpackers. We zijn nu in Siam Reap, de culturele hoofdstad van het Cambodja na de Khmer Rouge. Siam Reap is namelijk vooral bekent als de stad van de Angkor Wat, het grootste religieuze complex van de wereld. De tempels werden gebouwd in de 12e eeuw door Hindoeïstische gelovigen, maar zijn later een Boeddhistisch complex geworden. Morgen gaan we Angkor Wat op de scooter en te voet verkennen.
      We gingen gister met de bus naar Siam Reap. We namen afscheid van onze Amerikaanse vrienden en namen hun tips aan, aangezien zij eerder al in Siam Reap waren. Morgen komen ze weer langs om een of andere reden, dus dan zullen ze ons wel wat van de omgeving laten zien, en wij hun. We hebben vandaag namelijk een leuk burgertentje ontdekt, naast nog wat Khmer Cuisine eetplekken.
      Op de foto's staat trouwens een korte doorsnede van het land/de stad. Kort samengevat: het land is plat, stoffig, droog en arm. Zodra je de hoofdstraten uit bent, zijn de huizen gebouwd van golfplaten en pallets. Vriendelijk is iedereen wel, en het land is ook zeker niet lelijk. Tot snel      もっと詳しく
