      The Way Up

      June 25, 2021 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

It took 2 days of driving from Calgary to get to Watson Lake. Watson Lake has the signpost forest with something like 150 000 signs from all over the world. We tried to find the sign Anna's Grandparents left 20 years before but to no avail. We camped for a night and continued on to Whitehorse.Read more

Sign Post Forest, Watson Lake, YT

      August 16, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Curiosity in Watson Lake, its Sign Post Forest. Lots of signs (probably mostly stolen) and license plates from everywhere in the world. For Europe, most of them are from Germany (I’d say about 90%), rest is mainly Swiss and Netherlands. Only a couple of french.

This place started with an homesick GI adding a sign to his hometown in 1942. Now there is more than 88.000 signs !

      Our Sign, Watson Lake, YT

      August 17, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      ————

After sleeping here, we started building our sign post. The Visitor Center provides the paint, we just had to buy a sign and some varnish (that we ended giving to the visitor center). Now there is a proof that we were here !

      Yukon Ho!

      June 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

It rained all last night so in the continued rain, we had to pack up “No Set Path” soaking wet. We headed out (while the rain continued to pour) and on the advice of the girl from the Visitor’s Centre at Fort Nelson, we made our way to Tetsa River Services for a cinnamon bun, said to be “the best”. There are only three tables in the small cafe so patrons are encouraged to share tables. We had a wonderful time chatting with our table mates and then another couple at another table ending with an impromptu sing along (the couple at the other table being singers and all). The rain continued as we made our way north, at times the clouds were so low and we were climbing in altitude, we couldn’t see more that about 100 feet ahead of ourselves in the fog. Anyway, we got through but unfortunately for us we missed some spectacular scenery through the Northern Rockies due to the weather. Deciding to continue for as long as possible today (because we just didn’t want to have to set up camp in the rain) we stopped for supper at the Coal River Lodge. We were the only patrons there at the time and so had the opportunity to chat with Donna Rogers the owner. She explained to us how self sufficient you need to be to live/work up here. Her establishment is completely off-grid because the quite frankly the ‘grid” doesn’t reach as far as her establishment. Electrical power is via generators and phone and internet is a microwave system (cell phone reception is spotty to non-existent along the highway). We were fortunate in our roadside viewing today, sometimes we saw scenery but we also saw, bears, moose, wood bison and stone sheep. We completed today’s journey in Watson Lake, Yukon.Read more

      August 11, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Watson Lake YT Sign Post Forest
The tradition began in 1942 when a US soldier working on Alaska Highway added his hometown sign to an army mileage post. Since then, the Sign Post Forest has become a place for "leaving your mark". As of September 2022, there have been more than 100,000 signs posted in this forest.

      August 12, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We started our day by heading to the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, YK to put up our sign: a mailbox that our daughter Amy made more than ten years ago when she was in elementary school. A perfect destination for the mailbox. Yeah!
      今天2023年8月12日我们一早就来到这里,把女儿十几年前在小学作业做的一个邮箱钉在这里留念。

      August 24, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Back in Watson Lake
We met this couple with a hardcore off-road RV. Hailing from Esslingen, Germany, they shipped their vehicle to Halifax, embarking on a thirteen-month journey across North America, including stops in NYC, Florida, Mexico, Alaska, and Tuktoyaktuk!

      August 24, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Although not much chance to see northern lights tonight, it's a good idea to visit Northern Lights Centre 🙂 to watch a 180° movie.
