      "Trekking" the Argentina-Chile border

      January 14, 2018 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today’s “adventure” was getting from Los Antiguos to Chile Chico. Distance by air: 6km, by road 14km. Very helpfully, transportation services have been suspended for over a year as the governments could not agree upon tariffs and duties for the respective national transportation companies.

So, we set out early at 07:30 and used a cab for the first part, 4km to the Argentinian border. 2 hours later we had “trekked” to Chile - no luck on the hitchhiking front and 8kms down. Still, we had to continue for 3 more kilometers. Finally, a nice Chilean gentleman took us for the final 1.5km. Overall a humbling experience...

After two nights on the party camping ⛺️ of Los Antiguos and the earlier night on the night bus 🚌 from El Chaltén, we decided to spent more money today and found a really nice hotel where we relaxed the afternoon and then roamed around the small town. The views from the somewhat futuristic viewing platform over the Lago Gral Carrera were great and we also visited the lake shore as well as the Central park - which had a bouldering wall ;-)

Evening was relaxed as well - homemade curry and a new haircut for Bert :-))))

      Chile Chico

      January 13, 2018 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ -12 °C

To get to the Chile Chico, we had to try hitchhiking for the very first time on our trip to South America. There is no regular or irregular connection between Los Antiguos and Chile Chico so it's driving, hiking or hitchhiking. We got a bag of cherries from the festival for the road and started walking. It didn't take that long to get to the Argentinian boarder. There we had to wait for an hour to be let through and start hiking again. Here we have decided to try as Chilean border was another 8 km and it was getting quite hot. A lovely Argentinian couple stopped us. They were traveling all the way to Puerto Montt and the Lake District. They dropped us of straight in the centre of Chile Chico.
We have decided to try the camp by the lake that was really close. It looked really nice and the lady who run it as well. It cost CLP 10 000 per night for both of us what was great option.
The only downside was the thousands of Isreali youth that have been visiting the camp every night. I must say that we haven't come across more rude and disrespectful nation on our travels.

      Leaving Chile Chico

      January 20, 2018 in Chile ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After couple of days on and off on Chile Chico and another sleepless night in the camp because of the Israeli group, we are ready to leave. This part of the route is very popular with hitchhikers but we didn't brave the hot weather and the wait. We have chosen more pleasant option with the Martin Pescador transport. The route should be really scenic and the weather is perfect.Read more

      Chile Chico

      January 22, 2018 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We picked up our bags from the common storage in the ferry and walked out. There was no bus terminal or any information signs. We looked up on Maps.me and found the main plaza of the village around 500 mts away. The bus terminal too was marked there. There were trees laden with peaches all around the square. We didn't waste too much time and were plucking away the ripe fruits from the trees. They were delicious. The bus terminal was right next to the center. We went in, only to find all the counters closed. It was lunch time and there was a board stating that they would open at 4 pm 🙄
We went around all the counters to see what all destinations they were serving. All of them had boards for only destinations within Chile except one. We decided to wait for that one to open to find put about the price and timing. In the meantime, a lady working at the bus terminal told us that, that company had stopped going to Argentina side for a few months now and that the only option we had was to take a taxi to the border, walk across and take a bus or lift once on the other side. She even offered to call a taxi for us. She told that the price would be about 5000 CLP. The taxi person she called wasn't there and would be available in an hour so we decided to wait an hour and check at the counter as well once it opened. We had our food at the restaurant in the bus terminal. After that we sat waiting for either the taxi to come or the counter to open. In the meantime, Hristo went around and found out from the shops around that taxi was the only way across and it would cost us about 5000 CLP. He also found a money exchange place, where we could exchange Chilen Pesos to Argentinan Pesos. We would need them very soon and we remembered from our earlier experience in Argentina that there was quite a steep charge to withdraw cash in the ATMs in Argentina, so we decided to change our money before we left.
The counters opened at 4 pm and we asked about the bus to Argentina. We were told that it had stopped a few months ago due to bureaucratic issues and that we would need to take a taxi to near the border, walk across and then take a lift on the other side. She too told us the price would be around 5000 CLP.
In the meantime, the lady who had called the taxi guy came over and talked with the lady at the counter and then told us that the taxi was available now and that as agreed, the price would be 5000 CLP per person
We were shocked at gow brazenly she was trying to fleece us. We walked away and went to the money exchange shop. Here, I changed some of my money to Argentinan Pesos. While Melinda was exchanging hers and Hristo was waiting for his turn, Maria was standing outside waiting and keeping an eye on our big bags we had places outside the small shop. Some local men started ganging around her. She didn't feel comfortable so she called Hristo. I too came out and stood nearby and Melinda too came and we made a circle around our bags. Hristo went in to change his currency. Seeing the 3 of us there, the mem dispersed a bit and then went inside the shop and started crowding behind Hristo. I went in to keep an eye on them while Hristo got his money and stored it in the day bag and pockets. Once outside, we saw a taxi parked a few meters away, on the opposite side of the road. We picked up our bags and walked straight to it. The taxi driver told us the peice would be 6000 CLP. We agreed and were happy to leave as soon as we could since now the men had started piling out of the shop and they had seen us all exchange quite some money.
The Chilean border post was 6 kms away, then a no man's land for 3 kms, then the Argentinan border would start and then another 3 kms would be the Argentinan border post. He could drop us till the Argentina border but we would have to walk after that till the post.

      The road to Chile Chico

      February 23, 2018 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

The whole road from Rio Tranquilo to Chile Chico is filled with «postcard views». The road follows the General Carrera lake, which is super beautiful! It is the second largest lake of South America. I wish I had a tent and could spend more time in this area. It is gorgeous with the lake and all the mountains surrounding it.

We stopped at one point to look at the view, and it was amazing! The journey took 4 hours.

      Chile Chico, Chile

      March 11, 2017 in Chile ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Motorbikes and beers in Chile Chico

      February 12, 2020 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

It’s time to do some Couchsurfing again. I am staying with Cristian who has got his own “Parcella” just 2km out of Chile Chico right at the beautiful lake “general carrera” which is the second biggest lake in South America and is divided into two. The other half is in Argentina and there they call the lake “Buenos Aires”.

Cristian is a really good company too and he has got a motorbike so when he comes back from work he takes me out to places with amazing views and beautiful beaches in the area. We had a super fun time together and also he has got a horse that I was allowed to ride 😋 and every night we were sharing beers. There is a really good one, a little bit sweeter called Maqui. That’s my new favourite one next to the Calafate beer. ✌🏼
