    The Eagle Has Landed!

    July 20 in Czech Republic

Well it took 29 hours but the tour party has finally arrived in Olomouc and checked into the Clarion Congress Hotel!

We have decided not to walk into town after all, as our18.30 arrival hasn't left us much turnaround time before dinner, so the important things took priority, you know things like getting luggage to rooms, freshening up and unpacking in the case of the staff...

...In the case of nearly EVERY student on the trip it was "let's immediately find the Wi-Fi code because OMG it's been over 10 hours since I had a signal and I can't cope LOL and what am I gonna do about my 'Snapchat Streak' with my BFF back in Northampton ROFL!!!!😆😆😆😆"

On the topic of rooms I have to admit to feeling a little bit guilty: all of the staff are actually in single rooms for this hotel which is lovely but whereas my colleagues opened their doors to their room and en-suite; on opening mine I stepped into the lobby, proceeded into the lounge and leisurely strolled back round to my bedroom and en-suite! In many ways it's more problematic as with SO much space and room it might be easier to lose things, so reluctantly I suppose I can take one for the team this time round!?!

Dinner is in 5 minutes in the hotel restaurant and then I imagine the exhaustion will kick in; first concert day tomorrow, Kromeriz here we come!!!

    Good Morning from Olomouc!

    July 21 in Czech Republic

Well we're all up, if not quite button bright and wide awake in every case!

Feedback on beds and pillows seems to be very positive (who would have thought that teenagers would be so particular with their sleeping requirements?!) and on the whole everyone seems to have had a good night's sleep, and certainly happy to have been able to sleep lying down!

We checked to make sure that we saw everyone at breakfast, so if you don't see your little cherub on the accompanying shots please rest assured that they made it down. Breakfast itself was fantastic. Loads of choice whether hot or cold: yoghurts, cereals, bread, pastries, bacon, eggs, sausages, sweetcorn & brussel sprouts (I kid you not!), cheese, cold meats...there really was something for everyone.

Rehearsals now until 11.00 (must post photos of the rehearsal space!) and we'll get going to Kromeriz hopefully around 11.45.

    On our way to Kromeriz

    July 21 in Czech Republic

Off to our first concert of the tour and the beautiful town of Kromeriz. Rehearsals all went well this morning; the rehearsal spaces were awesome, although some of the artwork in the conference centre has caused a bit of seems to be pictures of various people covered in mud?!

    Anyhow onwards and upwards...

    Archbishop's Palace Concert Clip

    July 21 in Czech Republic

Here's a clip from Laudate Dominum featuring Abi Taylor as soloist.

Find Penguins only allows clips up to 60 seconds if anyone is wondering why we are not posting full performances. I videoed all of Sleep (personal fave) and at the moment I haven't figured out how to save a 60-second portion of it from tonight into a file that the site recognises. If I figure it out I'll also post that too, sorry!Read more

    Easy Like Sunday Morning

    July 22 in Czech Republic

A leisurely morning after last night's distinctive and sterling first concert. Feedback from the first venue has been magnificent, with many meritorious reflections on the accomplished, estimable and distinguished performances from CYO and the exemplary, transcendent and choicest performances from CYCh. All in all a champion and striking evening of first-rate and priceless music making...

...I may have downloaded a thesaurus...?!

Arrival back at the hotel was quite late last night and so the decision was made to allow the group to choose whether to walk into Olomouc this morning or to stay in the hotel and chill out/catch up on sleep!

In the end 70 hardy souls joined Mrs M, Ms K, Miss A, Miss M, Mr D, Mr H, Mr B, Mr S and Mr k (sounds like characters in a Tarantino movie?!) and walked into town.

Olomouc really is lovely; there is a beautiful main square with some nice cafes, and some lovely buildings too. The supermarkets and shopping centre were open so we all stocked up on lunch things and spent a nice relaxing couple of hours before heading back to the hotel.

Perhaps the most striking feature in Olomouc is the astronomical clock in the main square, ranked alongside Strasbourg-type clocks and dating from 1420. It has a three-storey design and depicts the medieval vision of the world; the clock only chimes at 12.00 and plays regional Hana folk songs. And it looks lovely too!

We are now heading to Luhacovice for our second concert, at the KD Elektra Hall which will be our "tour polo shirt concert". The weather seems to have clouded over somewhat, although temperatures are still high.

Joking aside from paragraph 1, the feedback from yesterday has been brilliant; CYO & CYCh made a real impact with a fab concert and we're sure tonight will be every bit as memorable!

    Next stop Luhacovice!

    July 23 in Czech Republic

We've talked a little about the food on our tour, which has actually been very good. The meals in Kromeriz and Luhacovice were both lovely (and crucially not identical!) and the buffet from the Clarion Congress Hotel was also extremely nice.

The breakfast buffet is really good too so we have a task for you. You will need to download "Left Bank Two" by Wayne Hill and have that track playing as the accompaniment as you browse the attached photo gallery, you must get the music going BEFORE viewing the photos or else the whole effect and ambience will be lost!

We appear to have started something?!

    July 24 in Czech Republic

    Good morning class!
Now if you've organised your equipment like we asked then you should already have your copies of 'Left Bank Two' by Wayne Hill to play as accompaniment music, so you can turn to the beginning of your recording to view this morning's gallery! If you don't have your copy with you then you'll have to borrow from a friend, or quickly get a copy organised, and we will have written your name on the board...any further transgressions and we're afraid it will be a lunchtime detention!

As the title suggests, we seem to have started something off with our take on the BBC's Ten Pieces and our own little "Gallery of "Breakfasts" so we're coming up with ideas for additional galleries...enjoy!!!!

    Day 255: South to Czechia

October 27, 2017 in Czech Republic

Time to leave Poland! We've quite enjoyed our time here, everyone has been really friendly and it's been surprisingly easy to travel as most people can speak at least a little English. Just the road signs that pose problems! We didn't have to check out until 11am and we actually didn't have that much to do today, so we didn't hurry out or anything.

Our host met us at 11am and collected the keys, then we hit the road. By the time we'd exited the garage, shuffled through the city traffic and re-routed slightly away from a big freeway delay up ahead it was nearly midday. Stopped again to pick up a resupply of dog food, then stopped another time for petrol. Figured that we might as well have lunch too since McDonalds was right there, so we did! Managed to spend the last of our zloty which will be no use once we cross the border.

It was quite a long drive - about 2 hours on the freeway south-east back across Poland, then southwards on another freeway into Czechia heading towards Brno. You might notice I keep referring to it as Czechia - that's the correct name for the country, it was changed from Czech Republic in 2012. Somehow it's just completely failed to catch on.

Arrived in Olomouc around 3:30pm, still with a couple of hours before check-in time. So we did our obligatory UNESCO site, probably the smallest one we will ever visit. It's a column in a square. A monumental column, sure, about 35 metres high and covered in baroque sculpture, but a column nonetheless. Did our filming and had a look around the nice old town before heading to our apartment.

Quite small and compact but enough for what we need. Only drawback is that it's on the top floor, with no lift. 9 flights of stairs, 9 steps each. Quite a few! Headed out for dinner in the evening to a popular brewpub where we had great food - I had a cordon bleu type thing while Shandos had an enormous boar knuckle. Two good meals, a large beer, a wine and an entree set us back the equivalent of about 22 euros - food is definitely cheap here.

Hurried home as it had started raining and I don't have an umbrella. Shandos arrived nice and dry after our 10 minute walk; me, less so.
