      Karnak Temple

      It’s 5 p.m. and the giant red sun has just set on the Nile. We are having a mint tea in our rooftop restaurant and recalling all the wonderful moments we had today. At this moment, the Call to Prayer is being sung all over the city and it is loud and haunting. I cannot do the sensual overload I am experiencing right now, justice.

      Twelve hours ago, we set off on our hot air balloon ride on the West Bank of the Nile and we have just returned from visiting the Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor. It is the second largest temple complex in the world after Angkor Wat in Cambodia and we were wowed.

      I must backtrack a bit. Yesterday, we were hounded somewhat by a 45 year old super friendly caleche driver, Abdullah, who befriended Chris. His English was fairly good and he talked to us about his hard life in Egypt under their president who is also a military leader. Not the greatest combination…

      Abdullah offered to drive us today to and from Karnak in his caleche for a reasonable price. He met us promptly at 2 pm. with his horse Rambo and his 15 year old son, Ahmed. Karnak is 3 km away and as it was hot today, this was a good option for us.

      To tell you the truth, I don’t know where to start in describing Karnak. Hopefully the photos paint a good picture of what it is like. Luxor used to be called Thebes and it was an important religious centre during the Middle Kingdom period ( 2055-2004 B.C.) it was also became the capital city when Upper and Lower Egypt joined. It was home to the cult god Amun, but I am not going into any more Egyptian history as its history is huge and complicated.

      So, if we had to pick one of the most impressive areas of the Karnak Complex, it would be the Great Hypostyle Hall (5500 square meters) in the Temple to Amun-Ra. It has 134 towering sandstone columns in the form of towering papyrus stalks. In the summer when the Nile used to flood, the columns would be flooded and it looked like a swamp of papyrus.

      All the way from Karnak to where we are staying near the Luxor Temple, there is a Avenue of Sphinxes. This road was used once a year during a big festival when the Egyptians paraded down it carrying the statues of Amun and Mut in a symbolic re-enactment of their marriage. About 15 years ago, houses covered this avenue. When the 1050 sphinxes and statues of rams were discovered, the houses on top of the avenue were torn down and the area was cleared exposing this impressive 3 km avenue. A lot of the sphinxes though have been relocated to the Egyptian Museum to Cairo.

      We spent about 2 hours at Karnak before meeting up with Abdullah again. He took us home and gave us a little tour through some of the Egyptian areas away from ‘tourist’ Luxor.

      We had a grilled shrimp dinner on our roof and talked about all the wonderful things we have done in Egypt during the past week.

      Tomorrow, we will go to Dendara, a place that many travellers have told us is a great place to visit and off the gringo track.      Baca lagi

      Luxor - First Impressions

      We got off the sleeper train at about 6 this morning and walked along a deserted and very dirty, garbage strewn road to the Nefertiti hotel. I think we took a back route through a poor area. Even though it was pretty early, there were some taxi drivers trying to vigorously offer us rides. We knew the walk to the hotel wasn’t very far and we really needed to stretch our legs, so we walked.

      The first thing we did after getting to the hotel was go to the rooftop restaurant, that had a great view of the Nile, and have a coffee while watching the boats, the horse-drawn caleches, the dogs and the hot air balloons parade by in the early morning fog. There is definitely less traffic and horn blowing here compared to Cairo, but a lot more horses and caleches.

      Once our room was ready, we tried unsuccessfully to have a little nap (too much coffee) and then went out for walk to the Luxor Temple along the Nile Corniche, or the promenade, on the East Bank of the Nile. This is the great temple built by Amunhotep and Ramses II. From the Luxor temple, we could see a very long line of small sphinxes, that lead to the Karnak temple which we will visit tomorrow.       Hurghada, the Cancun of Egypt?

      We have met several European travellers who have raved about Hurghada. It is located on the coast of the Red Sea and is one of Egypt's most popular and affordable tourist destinations. We have been told that it has beautiful beaches and perfect crystal-clear waters for diving and snorkelling. It used to be a tiny fishing village before Egypt's 1980s tourism boom. Now the city stretches 20km along the Red Sea. It is very different from the Egypt that we have been visiting on the Nile.

      We have met several good drivers who said that they’d drive us for a fair price. We figured that it did cost more than the bus ($100) but it would be a much shorter and better drive, and door to door. So, we hired Abdo, one of Mohammed’s cousins.

      The 3 1/2 hour drive took us north beside the Nile, then east through a big desert, then through the dry mountains close to Red Sea and then to the populated area near Hurghada.

      With Chris’ help, the driver found our home for 5 days - the Redcon Suites - just in time for New Years Eve celebrations.      Baca lagi

      Asuan, philae tempel

      1 Januari, Mesir ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

      Aus Angst vor Langeweile (weil ich schon sehr viele in Luxor gesehen habe) und weil ich Angst habe, es zu bereuen, Abu Simpel nicht gesehen zu haben, habe ich mich heute morgen auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof gemacht. Ich habe ein Ticket erster Klasse erworben und den richtigen Zug genommen. 3 1/4 Stunden später hatte ich ein Hotel gebucht, eine Tour für Abu Simpel klar gemacht und bin in Asuan angekommen. Hier erstmal in das Hotel, zwei Sterne ist schon speziell, aber ich will nicht meckern, für den Preis ok. Die Kommunikation ist schwierig, aber jetzt habe ich eine app, wo ich nicht mit dem Taxifahrer feilschen muss, ähnlich wie Huber, lieber zahle ich ein sattes Trinkgeld. Ich bin zum unteren Staudamm gefahren und von dort aus mit dem Boot zur Insel mit dem Philae Tempel. Eine Stunde dort, das Boot wartet bis man wieder zurückfährt. Danach mit dem Ruftaxi zum unvollendeten Obelisken, (den kann man auf den Säurelinienaufnahmen sehen) ich war leider zu spät dran, die schließen hier um 16.00 die Sehenswürdigkeiten, wieder mit dem Taxi zum Hotel. Asuan ist so hässlich und dreckig, dass ich da nicht weit laufen möchte. Im Hotel habe ich nach einem Restaurant gefragt, er konnte kaum Englisch, mit Übersetzer schicke er mich in den Souk. Aber das war mir dann doch zu speziell. Bin heute sehr froh, dass ich Kekse mitgenommen habe. Ich wollte Abenteuer und bin mitten drin.Baca lagi

      Luxor-Tempel

      Nach dem Karnak-Tempel hatten wir uns den Tempel in Luxor angeschaut; beide Tempel sind untrennbar.
      Errichtet wurde er zur Zeit des Neuen Reichs (1550 bis 1070 v. Chr.) und südlicher Harem des Amun von Karnak genannt. Er war dem Gott Amun, seiner Gemahlin Mut und ihrem gemeinsamen Sohn, dem Mondgott Chons, geweiht.

      Einmal im Jahr – zum ägyptischen Neujahrstag – wurde das Opet-Fest begangen. Die Statuen der Götter Amun, Mut und Chons wurden in tragbaren Barken vom 2,5 Kilometer entfernten Karnak-Tempel hierher gebracht. Das Ziel der Barke der Mut und des Chons waren die Kapellen direkt hinter der Säulenhalle. Nur die Amunbarke wurde ins Sanktuar gebracht.

      Viele Pharaonen hatten sich diesem Bau gewidmet, u.a. Ramses II, Tut-Ankh-Amun und Alexander der Große.

      Dieser gewaltige Tempel steht mitten in der Stadt; der Verkehr braust daran vorbei als sei es das Normalste der Welt... Die Allee mit hunderten von Sphinx' ist unglaublich toll. Auch gibt es auf der Anlage eine Moschee, die eine Tür mehere Meter über dem Weg hat, da früher der Tempel so tief unter dem Sand begraben war. (Sie wird auch heute noch benutzt - hat allerdings einen neuen Eingang!)      Baca lagi

      Tag 9

      7 April 2023, Mesir ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

      Am eigentlich letzten Tag unserer Reise hatten wir noch einmal ein sehr volles Programm mit dem Beginn in Theben West. Dort konnten wir das Tal der Pharaonen besuchen, bei dem wir insgesamt drei Gräber von Innen besichtigt haben. Anschließend ging es über den Terassentempel von Hatschepsut weiter zu den Memnon Kolossen.
      Gekrönt wurde die gesamte Reise mit einem Besuch des Luxor Tempels, der mitten in der hundertausend Einwohnerstadt steht und die Sphinx Straße beinhaltet.      Baca lagi

      Karnak-Tempel

      Der Karnak Tempel ist mit seiner "Wuchtigkeit" kaum zu übertreffen. Das die Gräber der alten Ägypter mit Protz bis unter die Decke vollgestopft sind ist ja noch nachvollziehbar. Aber wie um alles in der Welt hat Ramses II es geschaft 134 Säulen aus purem Granit mit einer Höhe von über 10 m aufstellen können❓️❗️

      Auf alle Fälle sind wir uns darüber klar, dass die Ägypter einen Größenwahn gehabt haben mussten 😄

      Der Karnak Tempel ist eine Tempelanlage welche von vielen vielen alten Pharaonen Stück für Stück aufgebaut wurde. War ein neuer Pharao am Thron hat er seinen eigenen "Abteil" dazu gebaut. In diesem Tempel merkt man erst richtig, dass der Kindskönig Tutankhamun wohl völlig unverdient zu solcher Bekanntheit gelangt ist. Lediglich eine mickrige Sphinx hat er dort im Tempel erbauen lassen.
      Die Säulen und das Entré sind auf Ramses II zurückzuführen. Der Pharao der knapp 66 Jahre regierte und scheibar nur 1 cm kleiner war als Paul 😅😌      Baca lagi

      Luxor- und Karnaktempel

      Aufgewacht in Luxor geht es nach dem Frühstück zu den Karnak Tempeln, hier sind eine Vielzahl von Tempeln erbaut worden, durch alle Dynastien. Die Anlage ist teilweise unvollendeter, bzw. beschädigter als die Tempel davor, erschlägt einen aber praktisch mit der unglaublichen Größe. Highlight: die Säulenhalle. Anschließend geht es weiter zum Luxor Tempel 🛕. Dieser wurde zur Zeit des neuen Reichs errichtet. Die Anlage ist besser erhalten, jedoch kleiner als die Karnak Tempel. Am Nachmittag gehe ich noch in das Luxor Museum, klein aber fein. Es sind tatsächlich wenige Stücke ausgestellt, diese sind aber in einem tollen Zustand. Anschließend habe ich eine Kutschfahrt durch die Stadt gemacht. Insgesamt gefällt mir Assuan besser, aber die Souk hier ist auch ganz hübsch und so bleibe ich hier, bis am späten Abend die Lichtshow in den Karnak Tempeln beginnt. Hier wird die komplette Tempelanlage in immer wieder wechselnden tollen Lichtern dargestellt, wobei diese durch Lautsprecher mit der Geschichte Ägyptens untermalt werden. Ein interessantes Spektakel! Danach geht es ab zum Schiff und ich falle in die Federn mit dem Ausblick auf den nächtlichen Nil.Baca lagi

      What you see of the Temples of Karnak has been built over a millennium with the latest addition occurring around 350 bc. It encompasses an awe inspiring view of history that you can’t say enough about, so I will not even try. Hatshepsut’s obelisk is here. It weighs over 290 tons and is 27.5 meters tall.Baca lagi
