Mal Artha Gading, Jakarta

Today's adventure was somewhat unusual for us. No museums, gardens, historical district for us today. Instead, went to a Jakarta Mall. It was a great choice of activities, if for no other reason that there was working wifi at the mall, and I was able to catch up on downloading the travel blog for the last few ports. The ship's wifi is still ridiculously bad.
This Mall is an impressive six stories of everything from fashion to groceries. It was interesting to see what most of the clothing, especially for women, was like in a predominantly Muslim city. There was a huge selection of woven, long sleeve dresses, tunics and blouses. Most colors were pastel or muted. Anything knit was scarce. I did find a few things in a Bali batik store that were my style; knit, short sleeve, comfortable and bright. We also picked out a batik table runner that features the Indonesian shadow puppet, and a bag to carry our purchases in. We didn't spend more that $12 on all of it.
There were dozens of coffee shops selling pastry, which was just what we needed after such a late night last night. We both had a delicious pastry along with extremely good Java coffee for around $10 total. We could get used to these prices!
The best was left for last, the grocery store! I have to say, it was the strangest grocery store that we have ever been in. There was aisle after aisle of snacks, even more aisles of cookies and sweets, a huge bulk spice department, a small dry food section with mostly rice, small produce section and small butcher section. It fits with what our guide was telling us last night about the normal diet of Indonesia. Most families will cook rice every morning and eat it throughout the day with small amounts of fruit, vegetables and sometimes meat. She didn't tell us that snacks were the major food group!
We were pleased to find a small package of black glutinous rice, which we had cooked with coconut milk and served with jack fruit ice cream here on the ship. It was a delicious dessert! We also bought a bag of mangosteen and a few bags of "baked, coated peanuts" to try.
Our ship sails in a few hours. I am going to try to download this before we set sail.
