      La Charité sur Loire

      Today was a travel day to our next stop, La Charité sur Loire, which is on the Loire River in the centre of France, in the lower west-end of Burgundy. Our morning was very crazy and quite challenging. Everything seemed to go wrong…wet laundry to pack at the laundromat because we had no time to finish it, a taxi that misunderstood and almost caused us to miss our train, suitcases that seemed to grow and not close, dragging luggage up and down train steps, my purchased wine left on train…totally exhausting and overwhelming.

      But it was all worth it when we reached La Charité sur Loire . Our host, Barbara Jo, met us and the station, and we walked to her house, stopping on the way to see the most incredible view of the small town. She runs a chambre d’hôte (Bed and Breakfast) called La Maison des Mots which means The House of Words. We signed up for the excursion stay which is 5 days. Each day will be different. Barbara Jo is from Vancouver where she owned a culinary bookstore for 20 years. Thus, the name of her house. Actually, the city is called City of Words and you see words, phrases and sentences all over the buildings in town. Well, she bought this house 150 year old house and has completely renovated it. This is the most incredible home that I’ve ever been in, and I hope my photos show this. I love everything about it. Her decor and detail to the history of the house and French design is fantastic. Today, Barbara Jo took us on a tour of the house and then Elizabeth and I had an hour to take a short walk in the town before returning for what they call apéro dînatoire which is like an appetizer dinner with wine. Big meals are usually at lunch. I can’t believe it, but I loved it all and you all know how picky I am. We had radishes that we buttered and dipped them in salt…the good kind of salt and butter! There was duck sausage sliced paper thin. She made a beautiful zucchini flan, and also a tart with sliced potatoes and onions. Oh, I also had a French blue cheese spread on bread with honeycomb honey spread on top of it and then topped with walnuts. I really truly loved it all! Shocking, huh! Oh, the watercress salad and dressing were also fantastic…red wine vinegar, Dijon, and olive oil! I can do it!

      The excursion stay includes all meals and excursion/activities everyday. We can help cook, watch her cook, or just enjoy the food. Her friend, Paula, is here from Vancouver, and it will be the 4 of us. We had a wonderful “apéro dînatoire with great conversation. Oh, there’s also Minette, the cat, who lives here!

      Oh, by the way…this is now my favorite place!

      A Test of Strength in Sancerre

      After our late start yesterday, we were all keen to get rolling on our bikes as early as possible. I had previously instructed the team to be down for breakfast by 7.30 am, so that we could get started on our ride at 9 am. Since a peloton rides on its stomach, it is always important to begin each day with a hearty repast of cereal, juices, baguettes, yoghurt, cheeses, fruit and of course coffee.

      Buoyed by the lovely meal we had been supplied with the previous evening, we all entered the breakfast room of the hotel with eager anticipation of what glorious delights would be waiting for us. Our spirits soon took a dive when we saw the meager assortment that was waiting for us.

      Not only was there barely enough food for 6, let alone 16 hungry people, but there was almost no cutlery or crockery either. The cereals ran out in the first couple of minutes. This was perhaps just as well as there were no bowls left to put the cereal into. The six slices of ham did not go far either. Although there was still some orange juice, the glasses were smaller than an egg cup, meaning that it was all gone in a single swallow. The owner simply did not seem to appreciate that anything was wrong, even when people had to resort to eating from dirty crockery.

      We looked at each other, wondering whether we were about to witness some sort of miracle of the loaves and fishes. Unfortunately miracles were in short supply and so most of the group went hungry. The owner even struggled to supply us with hot coffee - our staple heart starter for the morning. If it had been an episode of Masterchef, I would have scored the breakfast a 2/10. The only pleasing thing was the lovely crunchy baguettes.

      Although the breakfast was a letdown, our group was in high spirits at the prospect of a lovely ride along the Loire. The early morning weather was cool and fresh, a far cry from the scorching days we had so recently spent in Caumont.

      On the way out of Charite, we stopped at the local Boulangerie to buy some sandwiches and cakes for a picnic lunch by the river. At least we then knew that we would not go hungry during the day.

      The first part of the ride took us out of the town and back across the Loire. The most obvious feature of this part of the city was how neglected the ancient buildings were. Most of the houses looked like they had been deserted, giving the place the feeling of a ghost town.

      We were soon comfortably cruising along an elevated levee bank. We had no real need to hurry as the day's ride was relatively short. It was wonderful to be able to just savour the moment, stopping for pictures along the way. We knew that there would be very few opportunities to purchase food or drinks along the way, however the guide book promised that there would be a cafe at the little town of Pouilly.

      Although we initially rode a short distance past the turnoff, we did eventually make our way across the long bridge and found the promised coffee shop. It gave us a wonderful chance to chat with a group of fellow travellers and laugh with the owner. He asked where we were riding to. When we told him we were going to Sancerre, he rolled his eyes and pointed upwards with his hands. It turned out to be a very accurate prediction of what lay ahead for us.

      After our morning tea stop we continued for another few km, looking for a suitable place for our picnic lunch. We were very happy to discover a lovely spot, right on the river bank. It was the perfect place to eat our baguettes and enjoy the rising temperature.

      When we caught our first glimpses of Sancerre we could see that the final few km were never going to be easy. The city was prominently situated, right on the crest of a distinctive hill. A very steep hill. The ebike riders were not daunted, the rest of us shook our heads in fear and dismay.

      Although the early climb was modest, the road took an abrupt left hand turn, sending us directly up the side of the mountain. The gradient would have been at least 16% or more. I could have risked a heart attack by trying to ride up it, but I could think of no good reason to do so. I stopped and started to walk. When I looked back I found that almost everyone else had done the same thing. As it turned out only two of the ebike riders (Maggie and Sue) had managed to complete the first part of the climb without dismounting, the rest of us decided to ride "Shank's pony" instead.

      As we walked our way slowly up the climb, the views opened up behind us. Although it was really hard work, the location was breathtaking (yes, literally breathtaking). A short time later we reached our hotel - the Clos St Martin, and were able to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring this beautiful hilltop city. Once our heart rates had settled a little, we all agreed that the effort was really worth it. How priveleged we were to be able to experience such a glorious part of the world.

      13. Etappe Saint Satur

      Wieder ein Tag und wieder neu und anders und wieder schön ☺️. Heute morgen mit einer Runde Freibad angefangen, dann ein paar km bis nach La Charité der Loire, wieder ein kleines Städtchen mit romanischer Kirche, einem malerischen Stadtkern und heute war ich dann mal auf dem Markt. Käse und Gemüse sind eindeutig besser als im Supermarkt. Als ich beim Cappuccino saß, kam Irene dahergelaufenen und wir haben das neueste ausgetauscht. Dann noch ein paar km und jetzt bin ich hier. Das nächste Dorf heißt 'Sancerre' wie der Wein und da will ich dann morgen Vormittag mal hin... Die machen aber auch gutes Bier 🍺 dort. Das ist schon erkundet.Baca lagi

      La Charité sur Loire

      Barbara Jo prepared a beautiful French petit déjeuner which included plum compote, yogurt, apricot juice, croissants & pain au chocolat. Her table presentation was so elegant. We left for the marché (market) where she bought a selection of foods to prepare for lunch. We all relaxed at Couleur Café, a charming, cozy place where we had chai tea and chocolate madeleines (small sponge type cake). Elizabeth and I did a little shopping. Oh, dear! I’ve been looking for the perfect French map to hang, and I found it. It’s in a hard tube which is great, but it will be a challenge as it doesn’t fit in the suitcase!

      We discussed meal selections for today, and I have decided to embrace French cuisine. She is aware of my somewhat limited food selection, but I told her that I really wanted to go outside my comfort zone and try some new food dishes. This is really not a cooking school as I mentioned earlier as we are not actively cooking. Rather, we are being introduced to French cuisine. It’s more like an eating school of French cuisine. She’s great with explaining how she prepares the different dishes. Our lunch had many courses. We started at 1:00 and finished at 4:45! The French take their time eating and enjoying conversation. Nothing is hurried. Glasses of wine are sipped throughout the meal. Our first course was a mushroom pasta prepared with fresh mushrooms slowly cooked in butter with crème fraîche added. This was served over a local nest of pasta. The next course was purée cauliflower which was cooked in water and milk, then drained, and mixed with crème fraîche, salt and pepper and served under a piece of fried cod. The third course was duck confit (we had the leg) served with a cherry sauce and accompanied with yellow and green beans with a little walnut oil, salt and pepper drizzled before serving. For dessert we helped make a fresh pear tart. The entire meal with excellent, and I ate it all! I was quite surprised as to how much I enjoyed the cauliflower purée with fried cod. I’ve had duck a few times in my travels but the cherry sauce made this the best that I’ve had.

      Everyone retired to rest or read. Everyone, but me! After all that food, I took off for a long walk through the town and stopped at Couleur for a chocolat chaud à l’ancienne, a very velvety, creamy hot chocolate. Francis, the owner, remembered me from this morning. He was so kind, and we spoke in French for a while. He even came out to see if I was enjoying the hot chocolate.
      It’s been a good day…

      Vierson

      Den restlichen Tag verbrachten wir mit Strecke machen. Unser Weg führte uns über Aachen, durch Belgien, an Reims vorbei bis nach Vierzon. Übrigens ist es kein Geschenk in Frankreich im Dunkeln durch den Wald zu fahren. Wir hatten 2x ein Reh auf der Straße und eine Wildschweinrotte 🐗 hat direkt vor uns die Fahrbahn überquert. In Vierzon nahmen wir daher gegen 23 Uhr ein B&B Hotel und legten uns schnell schlafen.
      Den nächsten Morgen begannen wir mit einem Frühstück beim Bäcker.

      La Charité sur Loire

      I’ll keep this short. I have tested positive for Covid…no surprise, I guess. I’m pretty sure that I contracted it before coming to France, as I have had a sore throat the entire time, and now it’s progressed. Elizabeth has tested negative. Barbara Jo has no problem with me staying here.

      Before testing, Elizabeth and I spent 3 hours trying to recreate our trip because of the gas situation. In the end we decided to keep our original schedule. We have a full travel day tomorrow to pick up a car back in Bourges, and drive to Brantôme.

      I did mask up and take a short walk through the medieval church …no one was there and it was only a block away. My greatest disappointment today is missing out on cooking a complete French rustic meal at Christian’s house. It is a 3 hour preparation. He was the French teacher who took us to Apremont on Sunday. So, I’m here in my room, packing and then crawling under the covers, hoping to feel better tomorrow.

      Ruhetag in La-Charité-sur-Loire

      Das ist Patrick, dem ich vermutlich nicht mehr begegnen werde und auch den anderen nicht, die immer mal wieder meinen Weg gekreuzt haben, da wir in derselben Richtung unterwegs sind. Die meisten haben einen Schnitt von 80 - 100 km am Tag und auch nur begrenzt Zeit. Ich habe aber Rudi getroffen, den ich vor zwei Tagen auf dem Campingplatz kennengelernt habe. Er stellt seine Reise auch bei Find Penguins rein.
      Ich hatte heute meinen Ruhetag, habe Wäsche gewaschen und das Städtchen erkundet. Es hat eine alte Geschichte mit der schönen romanischen Kirche Notre Dame und liegt an einem der vier historischen Wege der Jakobspilger in Frankreich.

      Allouis

      The day we left Paris we woke up early and went to drive to Allouis, but on our way we decided to drive to Monet’s garden. It was good because I had seen some of his pictures in the Musee D’Orsay which he painted in this garden. It was one of the biggest gardens I have ever seen(apart from the city ones) but I reckon it was better than the Melbourne botanical gardens. We also got a tour of his house which was very colourful. My advice is that if you want to go to his garden you should go early in the morning,because there are less people there and less tour groups. Our next stop was a big town on an island called Mont Saint-Michel and it was the busiest tourist destination I had ever seen! There were people everywhere. You had to do a pretty big walk to get there and once we did all the shops looked all medieval and old. We didn’t get to see much of it due to all the people but later we looked up how many people were there per day, and it said 15,000 people. Once we had done that we drove into the country of France and finally got to Allouis where we were staying in a three story tower.

      On our 2nd day at the tower we had quite the down day which we wanted to do for the rest of our 3 days here. We hung around the pool(which had a few floating donuts which was fun for me) and just sat and read on the deck chairs outside our tower.And on the 4th we repeated everything we just did on the 3rd and 2nd. Jemilla and I learnt how to play 500 so I think we might be playing a bit of that on the rest of our trip. Now off to our castle.

      Nevers - Sancerre

      Das Tandem, das am Vortag mit viel Kraft und Geschick in die Wohnung geschleppt wurde, muss am frühen Morgen auch wieder 2 Stockwerke hinuntergetragen werden! Das nennt man Morgentraining🏋‍♂️🏋‍♀️. Belohnt werden wir mit einem guten Frühstück mit pain au chocolat, Müesli und frischer Melone. Die ersten Eindrücke vom Loiretal sind toll, wie z.B. das Dorf am ander Ufer der Loire, la Charité sur Loire, das über eine Viaduktbrücke erreichbar ist. Highlight ist die Tagesetappe: Sancerre. Das Schloss sieht man schon von Weitem, trohnt es doch oben am Berg und gewährt einen wunderbaren Blick auf die Rebberge der Gegend und die Loire. Diesen Ausblick müssen wir uns mit einem Anstieg ertrampen. Gelohnt hat es sich alleweil. Ausruhen am Pool, erkunden des Dorfes entlang des "fil rouge", der durch die engen Gässchen und zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten führt und zum Ausklang natürlich Weindehustation mit Käseplättli🍷Baca lagi

      Bourges Day 1

      15 April, Perancis ⋅ 🌬 61 °F

      Just arrived via train to Bourges. Pretty sleepy after being awake and /or traveling for 24+ hours. Had difficulties figuring out the bus system, which we might not have taken if it weren't so chilly. The temperature in the sun is okay, but when the wind blows, it's a bit much. Anyway, four separate bus stops on each corner of a roundabout wasn't helpful, especially when the route signs weren't posted outside. They required you going in each seating area. A very helpful woman pointed us in the right direction. Too tired to easily comprehend and speak French now, so we're being overly helpless touristy. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
      We didn't have good data signals, so Cindy didn't get the message that the keys for our Airbnb would be presented differently. We went to an American style diner and got milkshakes to enjoy and start to decompress. So, the keys actually were available, so we went just a couple blocks and got ourselves settled. Nice place, REALLY old, but modern on the inside. It's a little cool because some of the windows were open, and the heat isn't on.
